Stenden bids farewell to board president
MANAGEMENT and
staff together with
the board of
governors of Stenden
South Africa held a
farewell for Leendert
Klaassen, president of the
executive board of
Stenden University last
Fr i d ay.
Klaassen has been
serving as president of
the executive board of
Stenden University since
2011 and will retire at the
end of this year.
At the cocktail event
held at My Pond Hotel,
words of appreciation
were passed on to
Klaassen for the role and
impact his leadership has
had on the Stenden South
Africa campus.
Chairman of the board

Gardiner spoke about how
in the past seven years he
had worked with Klaassen
and personally learnt from
him. Gardiner thanked
Klaassen for the support
he had given the board of
governors during his
tenure at the helm of
Stenden University.
Executive dean for
Stenden South Africa Dr
Wouter Hensens wished
Klaassen well and
thanked him for his
tireless efforts of ensuring
that the campus in Port
Alfred strives to better the
lives of others, not only
through education, but
also for the amount of
community development
Stenden University has
done for the wider
Ndlambe community.

Mzameli Dikeni paid
tribute to Klaassen by
honouring him in isiXhosa
tradition for
distinguishing himself in
his deeds of valour, and
as such, Dikeni awarded a
feather of the blue crane,
as “I s i t h wa l a n d w e ”, to
Klaassen.

Johnson said that in the
journey with Klaassen, the
campus in Port Alfred had
been taken from strength
to strength not only in the
growth of student
numbers, but also in the
increased community
engagements.
Johnson said it was not
only time to look back
now, but also to look

Stenden wished
Klaassen and his wife,
Geerdie, all the best on
their new ventures.

Property barometer keeps
homeowners in the loop
FNB produces a monthly
“Property Barometer”.
It tells us what is
happening in the market from
one month to the next. This is
a national barometer so local
factors will undoubtedly have
an impact on one’s local
m a r ke t .
According to their research,
house prices, once they are
adjusted for inflation have not
increased since 2010. I imagine
this is as result of the slowdown in
the economy and the political
turmoil we are experiencing at the
moment. FNB does, however, give
homeowners some good news by
saying that in nominal terms
house prices have grown about
twice as fast as the cost of
consumer goods and services. It is
therefore good to own property!
So how is all of this affecting

our market, and what choices
should we be making when
deciding to buy or sell?
I think for those looking to buy
their perfect holiday or retirement
home this is a good time to look at
our market. Not only because of
the general market conditions but
also because house prices in the
Lower Albany area have not grown
as fast as some of the other
coastal towns in the Eastern and
Western Cape. Our area offers
va l u e .
We have noticed that some
astute investors have picked up on
this and are prepared to pay
up for the top end of the
market. There is also demand
for houses in the lower end of
the market, ie below
R1-million.
However, there are still a lot
of houses for sale in the
“middle market” (bet ween
R1.5-million and R3-million). So if
you are selling in this bracket I
recommend that you price your
property realistically to make sure
that you attract the few buyers
that are interested in this sector. If
you are considering selling I do
recommend that you ask the
advice of an expert to make sure
that you are not disappointed.
