Kenton Bowling Club November has traditionally been the month of the Sunshine Coast SPAR Kenton Ladies’ Classic Bowls Tournament and this year was no different. The inclement weather conditions forecast earlier in the week was no damper on the number of entries. Tuesday November 7 saw 18 teams from as far afield as East London, Hofmeyer and Jeffreys Bay arrive at the Kenton-on-Sea bowling club to start the two-day tournament. This year the “Prophets of Doom” (the weather forecasters) proved to be correct. The first morning’s play had to be cancelled due to regular squalls. Apart from a little scare of a few drops in the morning, the second day was played in perfect weather conditions. This is one of the two premier annual fundraising events of the club. In keeping with its importance, the club members all contribute their services to ensure that the guests are well catered for. A lot of hard work went into providing sufficient opportunities for players to enjoy themselves on and off the greens. Competition was fierce, and the winning team was only determined after the last game on Wednesday afternoon. In the last round, A Kritzinger’s team (L Hayward, W Gouws, S MacLauchlan) from Western Suburbs beat P Wallis’s team from Walmer 17-8 to be crowned the 2017 champions. M Buchanan’s “Smar tie” team (Marlene, Hilary and Desiré) edged out B Coetzee’s Jeffreys Bay team on shot profit to finish second. The traditional Spider raised almost R800 for Sunshine Coast Hospice. Through the generosity of local business, all participating teams qualified for a prize. The coveted Sibuya BIG TURNOUT: The Port Alfred Bowling Club hosted a Triangular Tournament last weekend between their club, Old Selbornians from East London and Western Suburbs from Port Elizabeth day-trip raffle was won by Anabie Marais from Bushman’s River Mouth. All-in-all it was a very successful event. Friday night’s attendance draw was forfeited by Wynn Daly. She had participated in the Ladies’ Classic earlier in the week and travelled home with her teammates, hence her absence at the Friday Draw. The draw now stands at R1200. This Friday is Personal Trust Trips and a steak braai. Be there just in case the drawn name is you! Kenton Garden Services sponsored last Saturday’s Social Saturday competition. The 3-2-1 scoring method was used, and Rob Coly’s trips team won with a score of 73-53 from Ruth Low’s team. The other three matches were close affairs and could not match Rob’s 20-point advantage. The Round Table uses Superbru, an online prediction game to raise funds. Round Table public relations officer Jacques van Wyk explained how it works. “Like with previous years we opted to use the SuperRugby competition. Every week a member will make his/her prediction of which team he or she believes would win and by how many points,” he said. “Points are given to those who choose the correct winning team. Bonus points are then awarded if your score is within five points of the actual difference. A match point is also given to the person who either guessed the correct score or was the closest to it. If there was a tie points would be split.” There was a R200 per person buy-in, with half the funds going towards assisting Klipfontein United’s travel costs and the other half goes to the cash prizes. The top three positions all received a cash prize. This year saw Ross Bedford take the honours as the man who was the best at the guessing game. CROQUETCORNER ... rolls that count LAST Wednesday, 16 of our members attended a coaching clinic given by Lionel Tibble, a visitor from England who is a prominent English player. ĞĐŝĂůŝŝŶŐŝŶůĂ It was extremely well received and, it is fair to say, was of immense help to all who attended. Fresh Stop Port Alfred Mixed November 11: Despite forecasts of a strong easterly wind, which materialised, 26 players pitched for the draw to be drawn in three and four-balls to contest the weekly Freshstop mixed Stableford alliance competition. An air of desperation was apparent with some players being denied their golfing fixes by rain earlier in the week. Winners on the day, handling conditions superbly, was the team of Heather van Harmelen, Glynnis Renecle, Nick Oosthuizen and Derek Sinclair with 89 points. The team, which consists of, back from left, Luke Lemmer and Saffron Tweedie, with front from left, Kate Tinley, Oliver Lange and Scarlett Tweedie, took part in a 400m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run.
