Burnt to ashes
NOTHING LEFT: Bukelwa Khundulu, left, and her daughter and three grandchildren who live in the ‘cricket field’ informal settlement of Endlovini lost everything recently after her angry b oy f r i e n d
allegedly burnt her shack down. Khundulu says she and her boyfriend had had a dispute the previous week and he allegedly retaliated by setting fire to her house
LOUISE CARTER
BUKELWA Khundulu,
her daughter and
three grandchildren
have been left
devastated after
their shack was
maliciously burnt down,
allegedly by Khundulu’s
boyfriend.
Witnesses close to the family
suspect the boyfriend may have
acted in retaliation after a
domestic dispute the previous
week left the couple estranged.
The family, which includes a
14-year-old girl, a 13-year-old boy
and a 16-month-old baby girl, were
with Khundulu at a relative’s house
Family ruined by alleged arson attack
during the alleged arson attack
and were all unharmed. The fire
destroyed all of the family’s
possessions and the entire
structure of the house.
The two older children are both
pupils at Mtyobo Primary School
and have lost all their school
supplies and school uniforms.
TotT was alerted to the family’s
plight by local EFF member, Xolisa
Runeli, who condemned the
alleged arson attack.
“It is highly unacceptable. No
man has the right to vent their
sense of frustration and jealousy in
that manner in burning a shack. A
fire that could have affected many
people because that place is
situated close to other shacks.
What is worse, we have people left
with nothing. We are calling on the
authorities to further their
investigation and apprehend this
particular man,” Runeli said.
At the site where the house once
stood, there remained only a burnt
out shell of the structure.
Khundulu, in too much shock to
speak to TotT, carefully inspected
the debris to salvage any items.
ANC ward 7 councillor Myuyiseli
Yali confirmed he had made an
appeal for help to disaster
management.
“We are assisting the person.
“Men need to process jealousy in a
different way, burning a house is
not the answer. All of these other
houses could have been set
alight,” Yali said. Ward 7 DA
proportional representation
councillor Khanyisa Daweti said:
“Any assistance would be of great
assistance as the family has lost
literally everything. No ID books,
no clothes, no furniture. They are
residing with a neighbour of
theirs.”
Daweti said she would contact
Child Welfare for assistance
regarding the children and is
sourcing food parcels, clothing,
bedding for the family.
“I do not condone any form of
violence. The men need to go back
to their roots. Men in our families
are meant to protect us, not harm
us. Our men need to be father
figures and role models for the
youth, our brothers and our sons,”
Daweti said.
“As a woman you need to be
safe in your home, and be
protected by a man, not violated.”
Dambile Mbolekwa of Sarah
Baartman District disaster
management said that their role

was to coordinate and to liaise
with Red Cross and Social
Development.
“We want to organise a
temporary structure for the family,”
he said.
There is an appeal for help – any
clothes, food, baby clothes,
toiletries, kitchenware that can be
spared would be appreciated to
help Khundulu and her family
rebuild their lives.
Khundulu is a size 36 and wears
size 6/7 shoes and the daughter is
a size 30 and wears the same size
shoes.
In conjunction with Daweti, TotT
is acting as drop-off point for all
donations, which will be handed
over to the relevant ward
councillors.
Officer secures accident scene
ON MONDAY evening, a
resident reported there
had been an accident
on the corner of Smith
and Stewart streets.
A MultiSecurity
officer attended and
reported that the driver
of a white Audi A6 lost
control of the vehicle
and rolled it. The
reaction officer
requested that someone
from Manelec also
come out as power
wires were also
damaged by the
vehicle. Control room
informed Manelec, fire
control and Kowie
Towing. Gardmed
arrived on the scene
but the driver of the
vehicle had fled the
scene.
Manelec was able to
temporarily fix the
electrical problem.
Kowie Towing took the
vehicle away. Fire
control reported that
they were busy at a
house fire in Nemato,
so were unable to
at tend.
ý A vehicle was
reported stolen from
The Lodge in Albany
Road on Saturday
morning. All reaction
officers on duty were
informed to look out for
the vehicle. Soon after,
a MultiSecurity reaction
officer reported that he
found the vehicle and
he was driving behind
the vehicle in Albany
Road. The reaction
officer reported the
vehicle owner’s
girlfriend took the
vehicle without the
owner’s permission and
bumped the car.
ý Last Friday, the
manager of Buco called
MultiSecurity Control
Room to report two
men fighting in front of
the shop. SAPS were
informed and
Multisecurity attended.
A MultiSecurity
reaction officer
apprehended one of the
men and SAPS gave
both the men a
wa r n i n g .
ý Last Wednesday,
Port Alfred High School
contacted MultiSecurity
to report that there was
a suspect on premises
in Horton Road.
The MultiSecurity
reaction officer reported
that on his arrival he
made contact with the
domestic who informed
him that she spotted
the suspect inside the
outside room and the
suspect laughed at her
and left the premises.
The domestic worker
said nothing had been
t a ke n .
ýLast Wednesday
evening, a MultiSecurity
reaction officer radioed
in that a male and a
female were fighting
outside Kemsley
Marine. He reported
that the female had a
knife. SAPS arrived and
confiscated the knife.
ýThe MultiSecurity
control room received a
call from a client in
Greenmantle Drive in
the early hours of
Sunday morning who
reported that there had
been a break in at the
premises and requested
a s s i st a n c e .
MultiSecurity reaction
officers attended the
scene who reported
that suspects gained
entry by an open
window near the sliding
door at the back of the
premises. He reported
that a Hurley backpack
containing a camera,
I-pad, Mac-Book and
wallet was taken. The
alarm was not armed so
no signals were
received
ýOn Sunday
evening, shortly before
10pm, the control room
received a panic signal
from a home in Alfred
Road. The homeowners
requested SAPS as
there had been a
break-in at the
premises. MultiSecurity
reaction officers
reported that burglars
gained entry by
squeezing through the
burglar bars by an open
bedroom window. They
stole a handbag
containing make-up, a
credit card and an
expensive ball-point
pen. The alarm was not
armed as the clients
were still awake.
ýOn Monday, a
break-in occurred in
Muirfield Avenue. The
client pressed the panic
button and
MultiSecurity reaction
officers attended to the
premises. A reaction
officer reported that the
burglars gained entry
by the open bathroom
window of the flat and
bent the burglars bars
open. They stole a
Playstation 4.
ýA business in Best
Drive, Albany Road,
phoned the
MultiSecurity control
room to report a
break-in last Saturday.
MultiSecurity reaction
officers attended and
reported that burglars
gained entry by
breaking the back
window of the tyre store
room, and pulled the
tyres through the
window. A case was
opened with the SAPS.
LEFT AS IS: A huge bougainvillea on the bend from George Street to Smith Street was cut back more than a month ago,
apparently by municipal workers, but the mass of branches has been left lying on the verge ever since. A member of the
public alerted TotT about it, saying he was thankful the bush had been cut back as it was growing into the road, but that
the cuttings themselves were a nuisance now. Queries to the departments of community protection services and
infrastructural development, as to who was responsible, went unanswered
Blind school evicted from offices
28 members at Cannon Rocks facility stranded after rent not paid
BONGANI FUZILE
A LITTLE-KNOWN
school for the blind
has been kicked out
of the premises it rents
in Cannon Rocks for
non-payment of rent.
The school, Konwaba
Training Institute, which
is operated by an East
London businesswoman,
Nandipa Bhayi, is
situated at Ndlambe
Municipalit y’s conference
centre complex in
Cannon Rocks. The
centre was a white
elephant for several
years until the
municipality awarded a
business contract to an
agent to run the facility.
With the abrupt
closure of the school, 28
blind people and two
others who are
wheelchair-bound had to
be removed from the
school last Friday,
leaving their belongings
and wheelchairs behind.
Bhayi yesterday
confirmed that they had
been removed from the
centre due to
non-payment of rent. The
school owes R150000
rent to Siwelele
C o - O p e r at i v e .
The co-operative’s
deputy chairman, Cecil
Wentzel yesterday
confirmed the closure,
saying Bhayi had not
been forthcoming with
rent payments for some
time.
“We had to remove
them [blind members]
from the chalets and put
them in the place’s hall,
but after she again failed
to pay us on Friday, we
had no option but to
remove all of them and
lock the place,” We n t z e l
said. When TotT’s sister
newspaper the Daily
Dispatch visited the
centre last Friday
afternoon they found it
padlocked. All 28
students, who are from
Cape Town, East London,
Port Alfred and some
other parts of the
country, were gone.
A vehicle believed to
belong to Bhayi was
locked inside the
premises by the landlord.
“We will keep that
vehicle until we reach
some sort of an
agreement with her,”
Wentzel said.
IN A FIX: SA Council for the Blind members, from left Thandile Butana, Lutho Xintolo, and
Nomthandazo Rasayi at Kenton-on-Sea police station following the forced removal of colleagues
from a Cannon Rocks school for the blind after rental payments remained unpaid
Picture: MICHAEL PINYANA
The clothes, including
blankets and wheelchairs
for the students had to
be taken to the nearest
police station by police
and South African
Council for the Blind
(SACB) officials, who
responded after hearing
the news of the closure.
Lutho Xintolo of SACB
said it was bad for Bhayi
not to be paying rent
while she was taking
money from the
students. “These
students were paying
money to be here and
they expected to get
education as promised
by Bhayi.”
Bhayi confirmed she
was struggling to keep
up with rent payments.
“It’s a struggle that we
are facing and if we are
not getting a vacant
government building to
use for these students,
we will close the school,”
she said.
If our sponsors are not
coming forward, we face
these predicaments,” she
said. Asked which
sponsors she was
referring to, Bhayi
refused to divulge their
identities. Another SACB
official, Thandile Butana,
said they didn’t believe
anything that Bhayi said.
“Our wish is that these
students can be taken to
better places and not be
part of this. It’s painful to
see a blind person
suffering because of
things like these,”
Butana said.
A mother’s personal story of
raising twins with autism
JON HOUZET
AFTER lying in a drawer for 30
years, a great-grandmother’s
true-life story of her immense
challenge raising twins with autism
has finally been published.
Enid Mary Stanton, 81, currently
lives at Diaz Old Age Home in
Alexandria, but still calls her
Bloemfontein smallholding home. Her
daughter, Felicity McNamara, lives on
an Alexandria farm and after years of
persuading her mother to have her
book published, was finally able to get
it done when Stanton had a nasty fall
and needed special care.
She is recovering well and was in
good spirits when TotT interviewed her
at Diaz Home last weekend.
She titled her book Through a Glass,
Darkly – taken from the scripture in 1
Corinthians 13:11-12.
Felicity was the first-born of her
siblings, and was two years old when
her mother gave birth to twins Kevin
and Steven. Stanton’s overwhelming
joy was soon clouded by the
realisation that her boys were not
normal. What follows is a story of a
m ot h e r ’s fierce love and sheer
determination to do the best she can
to get the most out of life for her boys.
With all the visits the family made
to doctors to see how the twins could
be treated, Stanton began keeping a
diary of what was happening in the
boys’ lives.
“It was easier than explaining things
over and over to the doctors,” she said.
At first, the family did not know
what was wrong with the twins as
autism was not commonly known. As
babies they seemed apathetic and
reluctant to feed properly. Of the two,
Kevin was worse off and a neurologist
confirmed a brain haemorrhage
occurred at birth.
At the age of two, the boys started
attending a school for cerebral palsied
children. Steven began to show a
violent temper. The twins were
hospitalised to have extensive brain
tests done.
“It was only later, at Martin du
Plessis School in Bloemfontein when
the inspector came around and said
he thinks it’s autism. They were about
four then,” Stanton said.
“We went to Red Cross Children’s
Hospital in Cape Town where there
was a doctor who was the only
authority on autism in the country.”
Amid Kevin’s destructiveness and
Steven’s bad temper, the family found
that Steven had an aptitude for music
and art. There seemed to be no hope
for Kevin, as the school said his
mental disability was too great.
A heart-wrenching decision was
made when the principal at Steven’s
school insisted that Kevin should be
institutionalised to give Steven a better
chance in life. Kevin was placed in a
mental institution at the age of six.
“We put Steven in a special school
in Pretoria, Unica. He was very happy
there and was allowed to stay until he
was 23. I dedicated the book to
Unica,” Stanton said.
She continued writing about the
t wins’ journey until they were 23.
Currently Steven lives in a sheltered
workshop in Bloemfontein and visits
his mother every weekend when she
is up there. Stanton also visits Kevin
in the mental institution, but less
frequently now as she has gotten
older and more frail.
There is a deep melancholy in
Stanton’s story, but it is not all sad.
The book is also balanced with
funny anecdotes and gives a
glimpse into life on the
smallholdings near Bloemfontein
during the years the
twins were growing up.
Originally a handwritten
collection of diary notes, a
friend of Stanton’s typed it up
for her on an old typewriter
about 30 years ago. Then it
was put on floppy disc,
which since corroded.
Fortunately the typed
version was still lying in
a drawer at her smallholding,
and as things
worked out, her daughter was
finally able to get the
manuscript and put it in
digital form. The book is
self-published in hardcover,
and the first batch already
sold out. A second batch is
being printed in softcover.
It will be available at
Fogar t y’s and Exclusive
Books in Port Elizabeth.
“Autism is still a mystery,”
Stanton said. “I don’t know all
the answers.”
facing Goliath.
volunteered to be Israel’s
champion to fight the Philistine
giant, Goliath, when others were
too afraid. Declining the offer of
armour and a sword, he went
into battle with just his sling and
a few stones, and his faith in the
Lord.
“It’s quite a gruesome story,
but maybe not as bad as what
some men saw in World War 1,”
Spenceley said. “And then World
War 2 was even worse.
“We haven’t had that expected
peace after two world wars,
there have been many smaller
wa r s . ”
Spenceley spoke about
courage and bravery, from
people who risked their lives to
save others from drowning, to
men like David who go out to
battle not knowing if they would
come back.
“Many gave the supreme
sacrifice. For those who came
back we give thanks to God,” he
said.
“We face our own wars in life
which require courage and
bravery. We might think we can’t
overcome them, but with God
nothing is impossible.”
Spenceley quoted one of King
George VI’s inspiring messages
to the soldiers about to go to war
against Nazi Germany, and
ended with two poems about
soldiers.
Hymns were sung and the
wreath laying ceremony followed
at which a bugler played the Last
Post and Reveille, and a piper
played while members of the
Moths, SA Legion, SA Air Force
Association, First City Regiment
and councillor Ray Schenk
representing Ndlambe
Municipality, laid wreaths in
honour of fallen soldiers.
The well-known excerpt from
Robert Laurence Binyon’s poem,
For the Fallen, was read: “They
shall grow not old, as we that are
left grow old. Age shall not
weary them, nor the years
condemn. At the going down of
the sun and in the morning we
will remember them”.
Readers give their views on home schooling
OUR most recent Facebook question asked
readers what they think of home
schooling. We asked if there were any
readers who are currently home schooling
and what the challenges as well as the
advantages are.
Most respondents said they had done
home schooling but agreed that it takes
really dedicated parents to make it a
success.
Kate van Rensburg said: “As a new
home schooling mom, I am on a steep
learning curve but can already see the
love of learning has returned. Not stifled
by a dull restrictive and substandard CAPS
curriculum, children can explore their
passions and learning can be made fun. It
really allows children to ask questions,
think critically and work outside the box in
academic and practical skills which are
important qualities our children will need
in their future careers. This Bela Bill if
passed will cause unimaginable damage
to home schoolers, not be mention the
knock on effect of pressurising already
struggling state schools.”
Carol-Ann Rattey Stiekema said that
home-schooling is not for everyone, “and
nobody should feel pressurised into
educating their kids from home. It is a
challenging but uniquely rewarding
experience that can be really quite
terrifying initially for the h-s [home-school]
fa c i l i t at o r ”.
She said it takes a brave person to
make the decision and without God's
leading, direction and support she
wouldn’t have had the courage to home
school her kids. Stiekema believes in
educating kids to educate themselves;
passion has to ignite the desire to learn
and home school gave her the opportunity
to spend time identifying the best learning
style for each child and tailoring their
experience to develop a passion for
lifelong education. She feels the best
educators in the world are freely available
on Youtube to inspire and explain difficult
concepts.
Mary-ann van der Wath said she is a
home educator. “My two children are a
year ahead. There were many reasons why
we chose to home school. We are happy,
till now, now we are stressing about the
government trying to implement a new
law, the Bela Bill. There is a shortage of
state schools, not enough space for
children. But instead of taking this
opportunity to change that, home
educators are now getting targeted. There
is bullying, rape and pregnancies in state
schools, but again the state is not tackling
the problem at hand. Instead, the people
who chose to home school gets targeted?
Seriously, our South Africa is failing on too
many levels. And now finally they are
falling our children,” said Van der Wath.
Sally Ross Miller said she home
schooled her two daughters for several
years – the eldest was dux of Cedara
Agricultural college in KZN last year and is
currently the top student at NMMU in her
honours year of agricultural management,
their second daughter is completing her
first year at Stenden and doing very well.
Her son is being home schooled.
“Home schooling worked fantastically
for my girls as they became motivated
self-learners learning to take
responsibility. Home-schooling allows our
children to find their passions and
strengths and to go forward in the
direction of their choosing so that when
ready for the work place, they are already
streets ahead of the mainstream schooled
counterparts who wasted 12 years being
force-fed curricula subjects that do not
interest them and set them back years.
Adele Fivaz Steck said: “We home
school, it is challenging when you work
full-time, but it can be done. Individual
attention outweighs normal school. Totally
agree with Mary-Ann, bad stuff happening
in some schools. The upside too of home
schooling is there is no homework and the
child can work at his/her own pace.”
Stephne Evans said she was very
sceptical about home schooling until I she
saw how it should be done. “The key
factor is a committed parent/teacher. In
our area the children are stress free,
happy and doing far better than in "big"
schools,” said Evans.
Dorothy Anne Sutton said her
granddaughter was home schooled for all
her high school years and she finished last
year and got a university entrance pass
matric. “I don’t think it would work with all
children, but it was a lot less stressful for
mother and child than formal schooling
with projects, homework and all the other
school things,” Sutton said.
OPINION
Ke e p i n g
memor y
alive
IT WAS an encouraging sight to have a
full house at the Port Alfred Moth hall
for the Remembrance Day parade on
S u n d ay.
It was one of the best-attended such
gatherings I have seen in the last 10
years, as they usually draw only a dozen
or so veterans and their wives, as well as
a few other old souls for whom occasions
like this are important.
They are occasions to remember not
only the fallen in two world wars and
other conflicts since then, but those who
came back from war, grew old and died in
peace – the ranks of their friends ever
thinning.
I remember attending a Remembrance
Day parade in Pretoria 25 years ago,
when there were still a few veterans of
World War 1 around, their hair grey and
white, and their bodies thin and frail, but
still standing at attention as they
honoured the solemnity of the service
and wore their memories on their faces.
It struck me that soon after that the
direct memory of that conflict by living
survivors would be gone, and what a loss
that would be for the world.
A few years ago there were still a few
World War 2 veterans among the old
soldiers at the various commemoration
ceremonies held by the Moths, SA Legion
and SA Air Force Association – both at
the Moth hall and 43 Air School – but
they too have passed on.
Moths members have lamented
previously how their members are few,
with no younger military veterans joining
their ranks. One day they will be gone,
and who will remember then?
I had a grandfather who fought in
World War 1 at the age of 16, lying about
his age as many young men did because
they felt the call to serve their country
and the commonwealth against a
powerful aggressor.
Though he did not speak in any
personal detail about his wartime
experiences, and I was too young to
appreciate it anyway at the time he died,
the memory of that was passed on to me
by my mother, who always was quietly
emotional during the Remembrance Day
services she attended with me.
What a precious thing to be able to
pass on to your children – that they can
inherit at least a portion of your memories
and care about what you cared about.
T h at ’s why it was good to see the
mixture of generations at this most recent
parade – the support of families and
friends to keep the memory alive. We will
remember them.
Big thank you from PAHS archers
ON BEHALF of the Port Alfred High School
Archery Club, I would like to extend a sincere
thank you to our community for supporting the
recent raffle run by our archers.
Funds raised helped cover the costs of
attending the 2017 NASP National Tournament
in Uitenhage earlier this year.
Congratulations to raffle winners Johanna
Child Welfare needs ‘go odies’ for market
ON of Child Welfare, Port
Alfred, I would like to extend
our thanks to the people of the
town, as well as those from
outside town, who have
assisted and always supported
the organisation.
However, although this
year’s raffle was an
overwhelming success in
generating much-needed
funds, we have decided that
early next year we will be
holding a morning market.
We are asking for “goodies”
for our stalls. If you have any
clothes, household items or
electrical appliances in good
working order, we would be
pleased to accept them for our
white elephant and tombola
stalls. Please drop them off at
the Child Welfare offices at the
Wildlife Reserve voucher (second prize) and
Richard Legg – whole lamb (first prize).
Archery is growing in popularity in our town.
Whether enjoyed socially or competitively, the
sport requires precision, control, focus, physical
strength and determination. These are
attributes we encourage at PAHS and your
involvement in sponsoring a prize or buying a
ticket, is truly appreciated.
Called to loving relationship not religion
CHRISTIANITY that is
Christianity that is
a relationship is
things that people do
because of the
favour of God.
Mere religion can
become tedious, for
it is based on
traditions and things
that are done for
conscience’ sake. We
can never win the
favour of God by the
things we do.
Salvation is a free
gift of God. “For it is
... with Pastor Theo Snyman
by grace you have
been saved, through
faith – and this not
from yourselves, it is
the gift of God – n ot
by works, so that no
one can boast”
When we receive
the Lord Jesus as
our Saviour and
believe in His name,
He gives us the right
to be called the
is not a natural birth,
for we are “born of
Answer: I am a sculptor and arts
teacher. I work from home so I have
absolute freedom to do what I want.
Q: Why did you get into this line of
work?
A: After many years of working for
other people, my husband and I drove to
Q: What is your motto in life?
A: Transcend the bullsh*t. Meaning
you can live by your own rules and not
take society too seriously.
Q: What makes you angry?
A: Stupid people and negativity.
Q: What makes you happy?
South Africa held a
farewell for Leendert
Klaassen, president of the
executive board of
Stenden University last
Fr i d ay.
Klaassen has been
serving as president of
the executive board of
Stenden University since
2011 and will retire at the
end of this year.
At the cocktail event
held at My Pond Hotel,
words of appreciation
were passed on to
Klaassen for the role and
impact his leadership has
had on the Stenden South
Chairman of the board
of governors of Stenden
South Africa Adrian
Gardiner spoke about how
in the past seven years he
had worked with Klaassen
and personally learnt from
him. Gardiner thanked
Klaassen for the support
he had given the board of
governors during his
tenure at the helm of
Property barometer keeps
homeowners in the loop
FNB produces a monthly
“Property Barometer”.
It tells us what is
happening in the market from
one month to the next. This is
a national barometer so local
factors will undoubtedly have
an impact on one’s local
m a r ke t .
According to their research,
house prices, once they are
adjusted for inflation have not
increased since 2010. I imagine
this is as result of the slowdown in
the economy and the political
turmoil we are experiencing at the
moment. FNB does, however, give
homeowners some good news by
saying that in nominal terms
house prices have grown about
twice as fast as the cost of
consumer goods and services. It is
therefore good to own property!
So how is all of this affecting
MYHOME
... with Simon Oliver
our market, and what choices
should we be making when
deciding to buy or sell?
I think for those looking to buy
their perfect holiday or retirement
home this is a good time to look at
our market. Not only because of
the general market conditions but
also because house prices in the
Lower Albany area have not grown
as fast as some of the other
coastal towns in the Eastern and
Western Cape. Our area offers
va l u e .
We have noticed that some
astute investors have picked up on
this and are prepared to pay
up for the top end of the
market. There is also demand
for houses in the lower end of
the market, ie below
R1-million.
However, there are still a lot
of houses for sale in the
“middle market” (bet ween
R1.5-million and R3-million). So if
you are selling in this bracket I
recommend that you price your
property realistically to make sure
that you attract the few buyers
that are interested in this sector. If
you are considering selling I do
recommend that you ask the
advice of an expert to make sure
that you are not disappointed.
Please contact me on
simon.oliver@seeff.com if you would
like to discuss your property or
property needs with me. I look
forward to hearing from you.

Talk of the Town 9
Modern view of Karoo fossils
ROB KNOWLES
T
HE Port Aflred Ski-boat Club
meeting room was filled to
capacity on Tuesday to hear Dr
Billy de Klerk’s talk, entitled
“Ancient Karoo Fossils in a Modern
Wo r l d ”.
De Klerk holds a PhD in
palaeontology from Rhodes University,
and lists among his many degrees and
achievements that he is currently
enjoying retirement and also turns a
mean piece of wood in his garage.
With relatives living in the area he
regards Port Alfred as a second home,
he told the audience.
A renowned palaeontologist, De Klerk
has spent many years hunting for
fossils in the Karoo and has an intimate
knowledge of the area.
He began by explaining that the
Karoo itself was an excellent area to
hunt for fossils due to its unique nature,
and that it had remained in virtual
pristine condition, aside from water
erosion that formed a pyramid shape,
with older rock formations at its base
and newer strata at the apex in what is
termed the Karoo Basin.
“The Karoo Basin was formed
between 300 and 190 million years
ago,” said De Klerk.
He and his teams have extensively
searched the area to determine the
types of animals that lived there when
the continents of South America, Africa,
Antarctica, the Indian subcontinent and
even Australia, were all part of a single
landmass; a supercontinent named
Gondwana, which began to break apart
about 180 million years ago.
At this time, and until just 40 million
years ago, the Earth’s northern
hemisphere was ice-free and had thick
vegetation, with no north polar ice-cap,
Palaeontologist speak of high-tech methods used today
but the southern hemisphere was
covered in glaciers, said De Klerk.
The average temperature on the
planet was 12°C. Due to climatic
changes caused by volcanos and
extraterrestrial impacts, the average
temperature rose by a massive 32°C for
a period.
“We talk about global warming today,
but this was like nothing we have ever
experienced,” said De Klerk.
From his manner and tone it was
clear that De Klerk has a vast
knowledge of the subject. He further
spoke of continental drift and the
similarity of flora and fauna across the
wide band of the southern hemisphere,
which is now separated by vast oceans,
but was all in the same physical
location when Gondwana existed.
De Klerk brought with him a
collection of fossils from the Karoo, but
specifically spoke of the modern
methods of determining the types of
animals and plants that existed in the
area over the past 300 million years.
Asked how he determined the age
of fossils he explained that, by
observing the amount of decay of
certain atoms of minerals it was
now possible to give very
accurate dates as to when certain
events occurred.
The earliest creatures that
walked the Karoo Basin were
related to turtles, then small
shrew-like mammals and, later, true
dinosaurs and, eventually birds.
The talk included a
slideshow where images
of many of the animals De
Klerk was speaking of
were shown.
“It is possible to now use the
European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
in Grenoble, France to look inside rocks
to determine the type of animals
fossilised in them,” said De Klerk. “We
can then capture a 3D image and print
out a plastic copy of the fossil in
incredible detail, without having to
break the rock apart.”
De Klerk showed that the ability to
determine our history is now possible
through the use of hi-tech equipment in
a way that was not available to us in the
p a st .
THANKS DOCTOR: Probus
president Doug Sutherland,
left, presented a small token
of appreciation following Dr
Billy de Klerk’s excellent
talk on fossils and early life
in southern Africa at the
club meeting which was
held at the Port Alfred
Ski-boat Club this week
November 16, 2017
N E I G H B O U R LY NOTES
WITH the rain pouring down in buckets at the time of
writing and the dams filling nicely, the farmers are
happy along with everyone else. Well, perhaps not
everyone, as there have been a number of road
accidents in the last few days. The weather conditions
and the Stop/Go on the main R72 arterial road
through town, seem to be causing some drivers
problems. We urge all drivers to be cautious when
driving through town and to be careful of flooded
roads that always occur whenever it rains for more
than a few minutes in Port Alfred.
AS IS now the custom, please assist the South
African National Blood Services (SANBS) on its drive
to stock its shelves and fridges with much-needed
blood, specifically with the holiday season fastapproaching
and considering the number of units that
will be required over this period. SANBS will be at the
Port Alfred Girl Guide Hall (close to the municipal hall
and the library) on Tuesday November 21 from 1pm to
6pm.
MOTORISTS are in for another fuel increase before
the end of the month, but this has far more impact on
citizens in general because, as transportation costs
rise, so do the prices on the supermarket’s shelves.
According to the Automobile Association, illuminating
paraffin is projected to increase by 75 cents a litre‚
petrol is set for a 74-cent rise‚ and diesel 63 cents.
IN national news, President Zuma, speaking on the
(previously, or is it?) Gupta-owned news channel
ANN7, said on Monday evening that he will lead the
fight against corruption and state capture. His
commission of enquiry is intended to root out
corruption and, as he said, “if Zuma is corrupt‚ it is
going to be found by this commission”. In the same
interview, Zuma also spoke of the assassination
attempt on his life by poisoning. It is difficult to know
who is fooling who in this political landscape.
DEPUTY president of the country, Cyril Ramaphosa, is
fighting hard in the race for presidency of the ANC,
and has already produced his manifesto and plan to
create one-million jobs and have the economy
showing growth of 5% by 2023. The question must
be, will Ramaphosa be elected to the presidency of
the ANC at the 2017 conference, running from
December 16 to December 20, to enable him to
change the ANC and, in turn, the government’s
policies, or is this just electioneering?
MINISTER for Public Enterprises, Lynne Brown, was in
the hot seat on Tuesday when she was accused of
having been “captured” by the Guptas at the Eskom
board inquiry by Eskom spokesman Khulani Qoma. In
IT is a highly volatile market and always is as we
approach the New Year, but internal problems in the
Founder of entrepreneur centre
honoured at graduation ceremony
LOUISE CARTER
A
LUMNI of the Robert Veenstra Entrepreneurship
Centre in Nemato recently held a celebration
and graduation day at the centre.
Centre founder and Stenden University executive
Robert Veenstra, who coincidently was visiting Port
Alfred at the time, was surprised to learn he was one
of the guests of honour at the event.
The graduation ceremony honoured its graduates
who had successfully completed computer, as well as
accounting courses.
Executive dean of Stenden South Africa Wouter
Hensens said it was great to see a full hall and
welcomed Veenstra.
“He inspired me from the beginning to not only
look inside but to be involved with the community,”
Hensens said. “Robert Veenstra approved me in my
role. But he played a more significant role – the
reason why you are all here today.”
Hensens said the entrepreneurship centre had been
successful over the last 10 years, but that as an
institution, learning takes place every day and is
parallel with community development.
“For every one successful project, nine fail,”
Hensens said.
According to him, the entrepreneurial centre is
turning out between 200 and 250 graduates each
year. “The course confronts you at first, but you learn,
develop, persist and gain confidence,” he said.
“T h at ’s what we see with people who do this
course,” Hensens said.
Thanks and recognition was given to John Mabote,
who Hensens said is hands-on with looking after and
facilitating the centre.
He also acknowledged Rotary’s input, as well as
collaborating with the municipality.
Councillor Ayanda Nqosha addressed the graduates
and the audience. “If you invest in yourselves, we
have a brighter future,” he said.
“We appreciate what you have done for Ndlambe.
We trust God is around. Stenden is doing a great deal
for work in Ndlambe. We are getting to be known by a
l e g a c y. ”
Nqosha handed over a token of appreciation to
Veenstra on behalf of the municipality.
Teacher Nomawethu Kepe, from Velile High School,
one of the schools that actively work with the
entrepreneurship centre, also addressed the
g r a d u at e s .
“I knew nothing about computers. But I was very
i n t e r e st e d , ” she said. She graduated in 2013 with a
class of teachers and is now a third-year student at
Rhodes University.
“As teachers we are struggling with computers.
Thanks to this family, you have opened our eyes. This
is not the end; I want you to go further.”
She spoke of the documentary she recently
completed and thanked Stenden for the role they play
in the community. She was proud to say that as
teachers they managed to recruit their principal in
WORKING TOGETHER: Councillor Ayanda Nqosha awarded Robert Veenstra Entrepreneurship Centre
founder Robert Veenstra with a certificate of appreciation for his contribution to community
development
completing the course.
“Keep on supporting us as alumni,” she said.
Veenstra took the podium and said it was difficult
to say thank you. “My journey began 14 years ago. At
the time, the main goal was financially driven, and we
were thinking of closing the university down,”
Veenstra said.
He told the audience that he then met with Adrian
Gardener and realised that it was not only about
finance but the impact of unleashing potential in
people, and that meeting made him decide to keep
Stenden South Africa open.
“I’m so glad it’s successful, it makes me proud,”
Veenstra said.
“We have been doing well from regional
competitions to national competitions. We
recently attended a competition for the
Sarah Baartman District at Rhodes
University in Grahamstown, and we also
attended the Arnold Classic competition in
Johannesburg. It started out as a
bodybuilding competition, but now it
includes karate and dance sport.”
Shode said 22 of members (11 couples)
of his club will be going to the SA
Champs. For entries, transport, and
accommodation it costs R2150 per
individual.
“Two of our students, Batandwana
Zondani and Liyabona Kofi, were elected
to represent Eastern Cape, so their costs
are being covered, but the other 20 have
to pay their own way. They depend on
parents and fundraising,” Shode said.
“Our students can barely afford to go to
very expensive for them. We’re appealing
to the community to help out.”
Lions Club offers free
diabetes testing
DIABETES contributes to more
than five-million deaths a year,
making it the eighth-leading
cause of death in the world.
The World Health
Organisation estimates that
more than 422-million people
worldwide have diabetes,
which is expected to increase
to 642-million by the year
2040. Only one out of every
two people who have diabetes
have been diagnosed.
With these statistics and
concerns in mind, Lions have
taken action through the
diabetes programme. This
includes among others,
education, awareness,
detection and control.
Lions throughout the world
have hosted diabetes
awareness programmes as
part of their commitment to
the prevention of blindness for
many years.
November is National
Diabetes Awareness Month
and November 14 is World
From Tarkastad’s dusty courts to Wimbledon lush
BOB FORD
GOING from the dusty clay tennis
courts of Tarkastad to the lush
hallowed turf of Wimbledon in
England is something many an aspiring
young tennis player would dream about.
But for retired farmer Ivor Phillips, now
living in Settlers Park in Port Alfred, this
became a reality way back in 1956. It
came about when a group of six talented
young South African tennis players,
including the legendary Sandra Reynolds
and Buster Farrer, toured England to gain
more experience.
Phillips teamed up with Farrer in the
men’s doubles to qualify to play in this
world-famous event. The pair managed to
win their first-round match, but were then
knocked out in the second.
They also hoped to play in the singles
and had to qualify for this event as well.
Phillips came up against the British junior
singles champion and went down in a
mammoth match that lasted five sets.
“But it was all an unbelievable
experience,” he said.
On the eve of flying to England, Phillips
came up against Gordon Forbes, who was
later to become a Springbok, in the finals
of the Kaffrarian men’s under-21 singles
in King William’s Town. He managed to
pull off a dramatic win.
But it all started long before this. One
of four sons, Phillips started his education
at the small Tarkastad school. It was
already obvious in those early days that
he was a talented all-round sportsman.
However, it was only when he was sent to
the famous Queen’s College in nearby
Queenstown as a boarder that he really
blossomed. It was at tennis that he made
over the globe participate in
this day.
The Port Alfred Lions Clubs
joined Lions throughout the
world by hosting a free
diabetes screening facility at
the Heritage Mall on Tuesday.
This project proved very
popular with just under 100
members of the public tested.
“Free screening has been a
project of the Port Alfred Lions
Club for some time and will
continue in the future,” Lion
Mike Newlands said.
his immediate mark. He was soon
selected to play in the first team and did
so for six years before leaving school at
the end of 1954. He went on to captain
this team and was also awarded his
honours blazer.
But Phillips was to excel also at both
rugby and cricket. He played in both the
first XV and XI, both for four years,
captaining the cricket team
for three. He was a versatile
backline player on the rugby
field and a stylish
middle-order batsman. He
was awarded his colours for
cricket and his honours
blazer for rugby.
More outstanding
achievements were to follow.
He did not captain his
school’s rugby side, but did
lead the Border schools team
in his last year. He was
selected to play in the
Border Nuffield cricket team
for four consecutive years,
captaining the side for three
of these.
It was during these years
that Phillips came up against
the talented Buster Farrer, who was fast
making a name for himself at Dale
College in King William’s Town, and was
to go on to become a double Springbok in
cricket and hockey. While competition
between these two was fierce, they
became lifelong friends.
It came as no surprise when Phillips
was named head boy in his last year at
school. On leaving school, he was offered
a rugby scholarship by the famous Dr
Danie Craven, of Stellenbosch University.
ALL-ROUNDER: Ta l e n t e d
sportsman and
successful farmer Ivor
Phillips
Picture: BOB FORD
But he never took this up as his father felt
it was time for him to return to the family
farm and join his brothers.
In between farming, there was still time
for this illustrious sportsman to continue
his career as he played tennis for Border’s
senior side for eight years and cricket for
four. Perhaps his most notable
achievement at this stage of his life was
that he was selected to play
in the SA Country Districts
cricket team for 19 years, 16
of these as captain.
On the farming side,
Phillips’s farm in the
Tarkastad district was
incorporated into the Ciskei
after 22 years. He then
moved to the Molteno
district where he continued
to farm with cattle, merino
sheep and his Dorper sheep
stud, which he started in
about 1978. Over the 21
years of farming in the
Molteno district, he built up
a successful operation
before handing over to one
of his sons, Leroy.
Phillips retired to Gonubie
near East London in 1999 and it was there
that he took up playing bowls. It was
soon obvious that he had a talent for this
as well as he represented Border seniors
for six years. It was here that he met up
with Farrer again on the sportsfield as the
two played together.
He has since moved to Port Alfred with
his wife, Leslie-Anne, and has played
bowls for EP seniors for a year. The
couple have four children and 10
grandchildren.
LET’S
CHIRP
... with Tim Cockcroft
MANY years ago I decided to have a little fun and
started trying to think up some original, unofficial
(and incorrect!) collective nouns for birds.
A friend of mine who was living in Port Alfred at the
time, was very good with words, so I asked for his help.
About a week later, he gave me quite a long list of
originals that he had thought up. One of them was a
“wig of heron” Wig? Get the pun? A wig of “hair on”!
Back to the present. Last week, I was called out to
help identify the various species of heron and egrets
that had “wigged” some trees in town. The
non-birders there were having a friendly discussion of
sorts as to whether they were grey herons,
black-headed herons or something completely
different altogether. So I pointed out the differences
between the species to them. This week I am going to
do the same for my readers, but for now I’m taking
two of the species known to nest in such heronries.
Firstly, the black-headed heron is quite distinctive
with its grey plumage, black crown and hindneck,
white throat, black bill and yellow eye, which turns
deep red when breeding. The young birds are duller
grey on the crown and neck. In flight, the broad black
border along the wing is distinctive.
The black-headed heron is primarily a grassland
bird, where it can be seen stalking and catching
rodents, small snakes, lizards and even baby birds.
The grey heron is similarly built, being about the
same size, and proportions. The first impression is
generally that of a paler bird, being white underneath
with a pretty blue-grey wings that don't show a broad
black border in flight. The neck is mostly white,
dusted with silvery-grey hues and a broken black line
down the front, and the crown is white. The only black
on the head is a line starting just above and behind
the eye, like an “eyebrow” for sorts, ending at the
back of the crown. These feathers grow much longer
during the breeding season. The bill is yellow, not
black, and turns a deep vermillion colour during
breeding.
The grey heron prefers fish, rather than the more
“ear thy” taste of its black-headed cousin.
Unnecessary afterlife horror remake flatlines
JON HOUZET
Flatliners, with Ellen Page, Nina
Dobrev and Diego Luna, Directed by
Niels Arden Oplev. 3/5
THIS is one of those movies that
shows how Hollywood is running out of
ideas.
The original Flatliners came out in
1990, and was probably most famous for
casting three rising stars together in the
form of Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland
and Kevin Bacon.
The premise was memorable – a
group of medical students induce death
and then are resuscitated to be able to
see if they have any experience of an
afterlife. It becomes like an addictive
game.
They do remember things from their
brief clinical death, each one unique.
Great show at Tash’s Craft Bar
GET ready for a great night out on November 26 when
Scott Harvey and Rob Knowles, aided by Melissa du
Randt and Sasha Badenhorst, will be putting on a
show full of songs, laughter and dancing at Tash’s
Craft Bar at the small boat harbour.
“Following the departure of Jeanne “Flame” Harris
Meter to her home in the States, Rob and I decided to
put on a show toward the end of the year,’ Har vey
said.
“It’s not a cabaret like Flame used to produce, but
it has a lot of sing-along songs and comedy, and
dancing. We’ll be doing songs from the fifties and
But what they share in common is that
they start being haunted by things in
their past. It goes beyond bad memories
– the guilt of past misdeeds starts
manifesting itself in their lives through
terrifying visions and what seem to be
tangible experiences.
The new F l at l i n e r s is almost exactly
the same. The only justification for
remaking this movie would be to bring
the concept to the millennial generation
of movie-goers.
Courtney (lead actress Ellen Page)
has the most plausible reason for
wanting to see if there is an afterlife, as
she carries with her the guilt of a car
crash years ago in which her young
sister died.
She manages to persuade two other
students, Jamie (James Norton) and
Sophia (Kiersey Clemons) to join her in
THE Classics at the Castle
team is pleased to
announce their exciting
Sunday summer concert on
Sunday December 3 at 3pm,
Opera Found – a show that
won a Standard Bank Encore
Ovation award at the NAF in
Grahamstown in July.
Originally, the Port Alfred
show scheduled for August 20
had to be postponed owing to
the soprano’s ill-health – but
now she’s in fine voice again
and raring to go.
Soprano Emma Farquharson
and her accompanist, Garreth
Robertson, are the two talented
young musicians who will be
on stage for the 40th Classic at
the Castle performance.
sixties and seventies,” said Knowles, “as well as
some newer songs and even a few origin songs
especially for this performance.”
Harvey is known for his love of anything Elvis, but
will also do some songs from Simon and Garfunkel,
Johnny Cash and others.
Knowles is responsible for the comedy and will also
be singing some Beatles, Cat Stevens and others as
well as a few original pieces he has been anxious to
share with an audience.
Of course, Du Randt and Badenhorst will be
dancing and, Du Randt will also be accompanying
Harvey and Knowles in a few duets.
“This is going to be the best show yet,” said Scott.
“But that’s not difficult as it’s our first.”
Unorthodox Jukebox will take place at Tash’s Craft
Bar, at the small boat harbour on Sunday November
26. Tickets are R130 each and include one of Tash’s
famous beef or chicken burger and chips. The show
starts at 6pm, so have your Sunday evening supper at
“The reason I named the
show Opera Found, was firstly
because, as a little girl, I hated
opera. It was only through
years of classical choral
training (which I loved), and
coming to RU and Miss Jo, that
I began to appreciate opera,
the weird exercises I was made
to do, and by how I moved from
Initially the death and resuscitation
experience seems to have a beneficial
effect on Courtney, as she can
remember her grandmother’s recipe for
bread and obscure information from her
studies that proves useful in her
internship.
One by one, the other students want
to go through the same flatlining
experience. One would think that after
struggling to revive Courtney they would
have it down to an art, but no, each one
is a battle, with their periods of death
lasting longer.
And despite their initial euphoria and
new sense of purpose, they all start
having horrible visions. It actually starts
feeling like a horror movie.
Ultimately it felt like I was watching
the same movie with different actors. It
wa s n ’t necessary.
in-the-making. Also, the Opera
pieces in my programme are
scattered, hence the notion of
Talk of the Town 21
ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME ON EVEREST
It’s not every day, or every year for that matter, that
one’s neighbour packs his or her bags and heads for
Asia, maybe with a tinge of nervous apprehension at
the prospect of scaling a good portion of the world’s
highest mountain.
Yet, that was the case a little more than a month
ago when Sunnyside resident, and my neighbour
across the road, Lynne Angus, boarded one of those
huge Qatar Airways planes at OR Tambo International
Airport, headed for Kathmandu in Nepal. Once in
Nepal, the iInformation and technology services
division manager at Rhodes University met up with
Hayley Wood, her best friend from her schooldays in
Pietermaritzburg, for their joint extreme adventure.
The duo’s decision to tackle the 62km trek from the
village of Lukla to the Mount Everest base camp was
made just four months beforehand. Lynne said the
base camp is situated 5364m above sea level, so
there was quite a climb ahead of them. In the four
months leading up to the ascent to base camp, she
had completed various day hikes around
Grahamstown, plus longer hikes in the Baviaanskloof,
Stutterheim and Middelburg districts. Regular gym
work was thrown in for good measure.
Various tour options are available for hiking to the
Everest base camp, with Lynne and Hayley opting for
a private tour which saw them being accompanied by
guide Dorjee, of Sherpa descent, and porter Surendra.
Lynne recalled: “Dorjee was excellent and very
knowledgeable, while Surendra was amazing and
would carry our heavy bags along the same path as
us, but make it hours before us.”
It took the foursome eight days to reach base
camp, including two separate days of acclimatisation,
and overnight stays at Namche Bazar (3430m),
Dingboche (4350m), Thado Koshi, Lobuche,
Tyanboche and Gorak Shep. Compared to the uphill
slog to base camp, the descent back to the village of
Lukla was exhilarating stuff.
“Hiking back to Lukla took us just three days, but
they were three very long days of 20km a day,” Ly n n e
said.
October is the busy month for Everest base camp
trekking, and the trails leading to base camp were
extremely busy when Lynne and Hayley were there.
“We came across many, many people from all over
the world,” Lynne said.
She remarked that one would think there would be
much celebration upon reaching base camp after
eight days of uphill trudging, but it was rather
l o w - ke y.
“When we reached base camp we had put in lots of
distance that day, it was cold, it was very high and the
air was thin. We didn’t have all that much energy and
high spirits to celebrate.”
Another group of South Africans joined Lynne and
Hayley at base camp, and they all gazed at the icy
shards of the Khumbu glacier that stretches around
Nuptse Mountain, and leads into the treacherous
Khumbu icefall which Everest summiteers encounter
on their way to Camp 1.
Lynne recalled: “This was a once-in-a-lifetime sight,
but we couldn’t linger, so we donned our backpacks
once again and started the long trek back to Gorak
Shep for the night.”
The next morning, Lynne and guide Dorjee tackled
Kalapatar, which Lynne describes as “the highlight of
the entire trek”.
She described it as a steep ascent of 400m
elevation from Gorak Shep to the top of Kalapatar in
less than two hours at 4.30am.
“The view of the sun rising over Everest was worth
every second. In one sunrise scene, our destination of
the trek where we had been merely the day before,
Everest base camp, was visible against the highest
mountain in the world, along with the Khumbu glacier
and Khumbu icefall – as if the thin air wasn’t
breathtaking enough,” enthused Lynne. “I get
emotional just thinking about it.”
Back in Grahamstown, Lynne Angus reflected on
her adventure of a lifetime.
“I am stunned at how easy it was when I put my
mind to it. Often people have a mind block against
achieving a dream because they feel it is
unattainable. But as soon as one accepts that
anything is attainable given the right mindset, then
making a start and working bit by bit towards that
goal will eventually get you there,” she said.
Lynne looked up the blue sky above Grahamstown
during the interview, as if gazing at the white peaks
of the Himalayas, and said wistfully: “I have no words
to describe the experience I have just had, yet I have
all the words to describe it. It was all a very humbling
experience under very harsh conditions. The people
are so kind and eager to help, getting by on the bare
necessities.”
Soon it was back to normal life in Grahamstown
after receiving a rather enthusiastic “welcome back”
from her two German shepherds – Christian and
Oakley. The office beckoned, as did the poring
through, in the evenings, of many hundreds of
memorable and stunning photographs.
TOP AWARDS FOR KWANDWE
Located not too far north of Grahamstown, Kwandwe
Private Game Reserve’s Ecca Lodge outshone some of
the continent’s finest safari lodges at the 2018 Safari
Awards in London last week.
Nominated as the Safari Awards’ overall winner,
K wa n d w e ’s Ecca Lodge was named Africa’s best safari
experience. Ecca Lodge’s guiding and tracker team
won the award for Africa’s best safari guiding team,
while the lodge was placed second in the South African
category for best ecologically responsible lodge.
PL ANTING
Have you noticed the planting of succulents taking
place in Grahamstown’s central business district?
Last month I noticed succulents being planted in
the centre island at the intersection of African and Hill
streets, and on Sunday I walked past the centre island
across the road from Connock’s Butchery in Bathurst
Street and it was full of newly planted succulents.
Well done to all those concerned.
Meanwhile, the Grahamstown Residents’
Association said in a statement at the weekend that
“some of the project will entail major works to
landscape and place structures, while other parts will
be simple planting”.
VET CLINIC CLOSES
The closure of Frontier Veterinary Clinic up there in
the industrial area on November 14 has been received
with shock and dismay among residents. The reason
given for the closure is that there is no veterinarian to
service the clinic.
THE BELLS RANG – AND RANG
It has been some time since the Cathedral bells have
been rung with such energetic enthusiasm, and last
Thursday residents were quick to ask the reason
when the bells rang for about an hour.
It appears a group of bell ringers from the UK
visited Grahamstown and wanted to try out our bells.
And it appeared they enjoyed themselves!
CAROLS AND CANDLES
Carols like Silent Night, Away in a Manger and O
Come All Ye Faithful will be sung with gusto in the
glow of candlelight at the Carols by Candlelight
service in the Cathedral from 7pm on Tuesday
November 21. Presented annually by Rotary Club of
Grahamstown, the service will be followed by the
switching on of the Hospice Tree of Lights.
WATER WOES
Fellow Grahamstonians, we have serious water
problems, in case you haven’t heard, read or realised.
We ’ve got water restrictions in place, and that means
the gardener in Thackeray Street should not have been
hosing down the owner’s car one morning last week.
BIG FIELD IN THE BOTS
It was double-smiles day at last Saturday’s parkrun in
the botanical gardens, affectionately known as “The
B ot s ”, with Ross Marriner completing his 100th
parkrun, and Peter Stockwell his 150th. Somewhere
in-between was Comrades legend Alan Robb who
came up from Port Alfred to do his 101st parkrun.
First overall out of the 154 Parkrunners was Brad
Landrey in 20 minutes 42 seconds, while Alice
Godlonton was first lady in 24:39.
Parkruns are held each Saturday at 8am from the
entrance to the Makana Botanical Gardens.
POTHOLES EVERYWHERE
Oh my goodness, the pothole situation in Hillsview
Road up there in Sunnyside has really got out of
hand, and the road is in an atrocious state. Wonder if
it will ever be repaired.
LESSONS AND CAROLS
A service titled “Nine Lessons and Carols” will take
place in the Cathedral from 6pm to 7pm on Sunday
with the full Cathedral choir in attendance.
IN SA SQUAD
James Kelly of Kingswood College has been selected
for the SA Schools’ tennis squad. He has a string of
successes and achievements to his credit, including
being invited to the Eastern Province Top-10 selection
tournament where he was runner-up.
IN THE WATER
DSG Junior School players selected for Eastern
the winning team was only
In the last round, A Kritzinger’s
benefits from
fun fundraiser
ONE of Kenton/Alex Round Table’s initiatives is
a fundraiser for the Klipfontein United Rugby
Club.
The Round Table uses Superbru, an online
prediction game to raise funds. Round Table
public relations officer Jacques van Wyk
explained how it works.
“Like with previous years we opted to use the
SuperRugby competition. Every week a member
will make his/her prediction of which team he
or she believes would win and by how many
points,” he said.
“Points are given to those who choose the
correct winning team. Bonus points are then
awarded if your score is within five points of the
actual difference. A match point is also given to
the person who either guessed the correct score
or was the closest to it. If there was a tie points
would be split.”
There was a R200 per person buy-in, with half
the funds going towards assisting Klipfontein
United’s travel costs and the other half goes to
the cash prizes.
The top three positions all received a cash
prize. This year saw Ross Bedford take the
honours as the man who was the best at the
guessing game.
Fresh Stop Port Alfred Mixed
November 11: Despite forecasts
of a strong easterly wind, which
materialised, 26 players pitched
for the draw to be drawn in
three and four-balls to contest
the weekly Freshstop mixed
Stableford alliance competition.
An air of desperation was
apparent with some players
being denied their golfing fixes
by rain earlier in the week.
Winners on the day, handling
conditions superbly, was the
team of Heather van Harmelen,
Glynnis Renecle, Nick
Oosthuizen and Derek Sinclair
with 89 points. Second, and a
little behind, on 85 points were
Sandy Fryer, Lizzie Lambrechts,
Barrie Brady and Paul Fryer.
Trampoline gymnasts
flying high
Four from Port Alfred at world champs
but quest for Olympic support continues
PORT Alfred can say with
pride that four local
gymnasts are attending
the 25th Fédération
Internationale de
Gymnastique (FIG)
Trampoline Gymnastics World
Championship in Bulgaria
from today until Sunday.
The four gymnasts – O n ke
Mangele, Liyema Nxobo,
Siyabulela Siwa and Khanyile
Mbolekwa – are members of
Nemato Change a Life
(NCAL), and were selected by
South African Gymnastics
Federation (SAGF) for this
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Three of the four –
Mangele, Nxobo and Siwa –
are also South African
national champions in
trampoline gymnastics.
As another accolade they
have also been select by
SAGF to attend the Junior
Olympics next year.
The team is currently
coached by the national team
coach, Lee Budler, who is
based in Port Elizabeth, which
means the team travels to
Port Elizabeth weekly to train
with this world-class coach.
Their efforts have been
rewarded with their selection
to the national team and
selection to the world
championships, but without
continued sponsorship not
only is the opportunity of
these future world champions
in jeopardy, but their Junior
Olympic dreams for next year
may also not be fulfilled.
NCAL director and founder
Jan Blom said: “We have,
without doubt the potential of
world champions. It is only
funding that is holding us
back. We have to find a way
forward urgently, we can’t
lose another year on the way
to the Olympics.”
Anyone who would like to
sponsor the team or find out
more about these talented
young gymnasts, can contact
Nemato Change a Life.
SWIM STARS: Coaches Sino Bakaqana, back left and Roger Nock, back centre, were all smiles
after the recent Dolphin Gala held in Grahamstown recently where the Port Alfred High School
junior swimmers excelled. The Port Alfred High School U9 boys won the shield having accumulated
the most points while the U9 girls secured 4th position, the U10 girls 2nd position and the U12
girls 3rd overall. This is a fine result for a small team of dedicated swimmers. The swimmers are,
Saffron Tweedie, back right, and then middle from left, Reece Coetzer, Scarlett Tweedie, and front
from left, Connor Bessinger, Kaylem Simes, William Beatt and Robyn Dacombe
