use of the word “we”
as he did the majority
of the roof climbing.

roof, but my husband
and I wisely stayed
closer to the ground,
untangling light
strands to feed up to
the kids, and attaching
light clips to the gutters.

Saturday morning’s weather conditions
were less than ideal for the task, but it was
the day and time we had available, so what
do you do? When the calendar reaches mid-
November, you can’t afford to wait for ideal
weather conditions and simply must makedo
when there’s a moisture-free day.
We started on the west and north sides,
and 30 minutes into the project my fingers
were numb despite my gloves. As I worked
my way along the east side I was amazed at
how much warmer it was. “We should have
waited to start a little later,” I thought.
By the time I reached the southern exposure
I actually could work without gloves.
I was surprised that the rest of the family
hadn’t made the same observation about
starting later, after it warmed up.
But then I stepped back around to the
west to pick up a few stray clips and realized
the strong northwest winds were to
blame for the harsh conditions, and waiting
wouldn’t have made it any better.
We forgot to test the lights that night to
ensure that everything was plugged and
secure, but I’m optimistic that all will be
merry and bright.
Even if it’s not, my part is done. I’m moving
on to the interior decorating.

Welcome to Winterfest
Annual event kicks off the season in Hull
It may still be November, but things
are beginning to look a lot like
Christmas. In Hull, that means
Winterfest, which includes a few new
activities for visitors to enjoy this year,
as well as the annual Craft & Vendor
Fair that anchors the weekend.
Kicking things off will be a new activity
with a bit of friendly competition.
Community Family Feud will take
place in the Boyden-Hull High School
auditorium on Wednesday, Nov. 29
at 7 p.m. Teams of five can sign up
to compete in the event based on
the popular television game show.
The event is a fundraiser for First Reformed
Church Youth Group.
“There are some great prizes and it
will be a fun night. Everyone is invited
to attend,” said Shelly Van Otterloo,
executive director of the Hull Area
Chamber of Commerce.
Thursday, Nov. 30 through Saturday,
Dec. 2 there will be open houses
at Hull Chamber businesses and
shoppers can sign up for chances to
win chamber dollars.
Another new Winterfest event will
take place Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday,
Dec. 2. The Holiday Tour of Homes
will visit six homes in the area. Advance
tickets are $20 apiece with proceeds
going to Hull Christian School
Parents Circle.
Saturday is still the biggest day for
Winterfest. A day to kickstart Christmas
shopping and peruse the wares
on display from nearly 50 vendors at
the Hull Community Building gymnasium
from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
“It’s a great way to find unique,
one-of-a-kind gifts. There is everything
from commercial to homemade
items,” Van Otterloo said. “There will
also be a $50 vendor cash giveaway
every hour, $25 per person, to be
spent at the fair.”
Two more activities will be going on
at the community building as well.
The dining hall will host a fundraising
dinner from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and
will include soup, cinnamon rolls,
pulled pork sandwiches and more,
with proceeds benefitting the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation.
In the basement of the community
building will be the Gingerbread
House Contest from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

To satisfy a sweet tooth, one needs
only to stroll through First Reformed
Church for the Christmas Cookie &
Candy Walk from 9 a.m.-noon.
Fill a bucket with sweet treats for
$12 per pound.
“If you have a sweet tooth that is a
phenomenal stop — so many goodies
and Christmas candies. It’s super fun,”
Van Otterloo said.
If the kids, or adults for that matter,
would like to see Santa Claus, then a
visit to Pizza Ranch will be in order.
New this year for Winterfest will be
Pizza Ranch Kids Day where visitors
will get a free kids buffet with purchase
of an adult buffet. The deal runs
from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. with Santa and
Mrs. Claus making a visit as well.
This year there will also be three events
bringing Winterfest to a festive close.
The “Backporch Christmas” concert
features Doug Anderson at the Western
Christian Events Center at 6 p.m.
American Legion Bingo will take
place at 7 p.m. at the Legion Building
on Main Street.
And The Epic Escape will take place
at Boyden-Hull High School from 4-9
p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and
$10 for students with proceeds going
towards Boyden-Hull’s Dollars for
Scholars.
“There is truly something for all
ages Saturday throughout the day to
enjoy and get in the holiday spirit.
You can get started on shopping and
can enjoy the sound of Christmas,”
Van Otterloo said. “Winterfest is my
favorite time of year. The whole community
has its festive lights and you
see the holiday cheer in everyone. We
hope everyone can come enjoy this
celebration and fun time of year.” F

Music for the holidays
Annual performance brings together local musicians
The show must go on. And even
though they’re down one member,
the annual Damon, Dave,
and Ryan Holiday Show won’t skip a
beat this winter.
Damon Dotson will be unable to
attend this year’s festive musical performance,
but Dave Rowley and Ryan
Sather have put together an ensemble
to bring holiday music to your ears yet
again.
This year’s holiday show will take
place on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
in the Lauridsen Performing Arts Theater
at the Pearson Lakes Art Center in
Okoboji.
Tickets range from $30 for nonmembers
to $15 for students.
“Damon’s not going to be there so
it’s going to be a little different, but
we’re planning on a big show,” said
guitarist and vocalist Dave Rowley.
“We have Adam Layman joining us,
as well as Carlis Faurot, a violinist
from Cedar Rapids. We’ll also have
Joe Cuttel and Brian Moore. We’ll
have a lot larger group than before
and we’re working on the set list as
we go. We have a loaded ensemble
of great musicians and we’re picking
what songs would be a good fit. Some
we know very well and we’ll try to create
something new out of ones we’ve
done before. ”
That set list is sure to include some
holiday favorites with some unique
twists as well as more obscure Christmas
numbers sure to keep the crowd
in tune with the holiday spirit.
“We’ll have some ukelele songs like
‘Christmas Island’ and some John
Denver tunes. ‘Winter Wonderland’
and ‘Frosty the Snowman’ are classics
that we’ll do a little different. Ryan
Sather is so good at arrangements so
we’ll dress it up a bit,” Rowley said.
“We do some of the same standards,
but jazzier versions, then maybe do
something like ‘The Marvelous Toy’ by
Peter, Paul and Mary.”
As the concert date gets closer the
set list will continue to coalesce and
the musicians will get together to
practice.
“What I look forward to and like
most about it is always the audience.
It’s like playing a living room full of
friends. It really is,” Rowley said. “And
it’s a lot of fun to play in the theatre.
The sound is great and it’s just so
much fun.”
As the calendar turns to December
and the turkey has long since settled,
it’s officially time to turn an eye, and
ears, towards Christmas.

For many the Christmas spirit arrives
when holiday music starts
pumping out over the radio waves
and over the speaker systems in stores.
One of those classic Christmas
albums frequently making an appearance
on the holiday playlist is
1978’s “Christmas Portrait” by The
Carpenters. Karen Carpenter’s silky
voice seems tailor-made to sing about
sleigh rides and wishing you have
yourself a merry little Christmas.
The Memorial Auditorium Performing
Arts Center in Worthington, MN,
will be offering a performance that
will bring that album to life.
Close To You: A Carpenters Christmas
will be onstage in Worthington at
7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2.
The program is headlined by
Lisa Rock who sings Karen Carpenter’s
lead vocals. Rock is backed up by a
band comprised of six members complete
with backup singers.
It’s a performance that brings The

“There are six musicians and Lisa
Rock who sings the part of Karen Carpenter
and they are amazing. They are
amazing musicians and have such a
personal element to their shows and
they have a great rapport with the audience
that makes their performance
really special,” Makram said.
The Close To You production is one
that Makram has been lucky enough
to see before.
“I have seen this particular Carpenters
group, Close To You Productions,
a couple of times and really fell in
love with them,” Makram said. “We
were looking for a Christmas show
for this year and they had a tribute
to the Carpenters Christmas music
show and we thought that would be
a perfect fit for us.”
The concert starts at 7 p.m. and it’s
all reserved seating. People are invited
to come early to enjoy a social hour
complete with holiday music at 6
p.m. Local favorite Sean Benz will be
performing guitar and strings.
While it is a concert, Makram said
that people should feel free to let their
own voices sing out.
“Of course, what it turns into for
those of us who love The Carpenters
is a Christmas with The Carpenters
sing along,” Makram said. “Honestly,
I have The Carpenters Christmas playlist
and I listen to it in my car all the
time. There isn’t one specific song I’m
excited to hear. I do love them all.”
The Dec. 2 show is timed perfectly
to help people jumpstart their holidays.
“I know that the audience is going
to leave with a feeling of being uplifted
with the holiday spirit and also the
feeling of having experienced a wonderful
evening of music,” Makram

10:30 a.m. - Meet at Stadscentrum
in downtown Orange City.
Sinterklaas and Piet will arrive in
horse and buggy. They will continue
down Central Avenue to City
Hall in a short parade. There will
be a brass quartet walking in front
of the processional playing music.
10:35-10:40 a.m. - Arrive at the
town hall. Kids will file in as the
brass quartet plays. Kids will sit
by age group in front of the puppet
stage.
10:40-10:55 a.m. - An introduction/history/educational
information
is given as Sinterklaas and Piet
enter.
10:55-11:15 a.m. - Puppet Show.
11:15-11:35 a.m. - Break into
three groups for games. Pre-kindergarten
and kindergarten kids
will be one group and play “drop
the carrot,” (Sinterklaas’ horse is
very important in the legend as
Ann will explain in the introduction/
history). They will also have the option
to color. Crayons/coloring
pages will be available. First grade
and second grade will be another
group. They will play the memory
game. They will also have the
option to color. Third and fourth
grade will be the last group. They
will play “Schieten Noten” (shooting
nuts). It is like marbles meets
shuffle board. They will also have
the option to color.
11:35-11:45 a.m. - Sing a final
song to Sinterklaas and Piet, say
good-bye, and pass out chocolate
treats for the kids.
Sinterklaas is coming to town
Learn about the Dutch heritage of Christmas Dec. 2
Sinterklaas. Saint Nicholas. Santa
Claus. Learn the Dutch history of
these figures during the annual
Sinterklaas Dag next week in Orange
City.
On Saturday, Dec. 2 those interested
in participating in the children’s event
are asked to meet at Staadscentrum at
10:30 a.m. in downtown Orange City.
Once there everyone who has gathered
will get a history lesson from Ann
Minnick as Sinterklaas and Piet arrive
in horse and buggy.
Sinterklaas is based on the historical
figure of Saint Nicholas, patron
saint of children. Sinterklaas is, in
turn, the primary source of the popular
Christmas icon of Santa Claus.
After the history lesson Sinterklaas,
Piet, and all the volunteers, children
and families that have gathered, will
join in a short parade, led by a brass
quartet, down Central Avenue to City
Hall.
As Sinterklaas and Piet enter the
gym there will another history lesson
before the activities begin.
“Our whole goal is to promote and
keep Dutch heritage and culture alive
and well. It’s a fun way to keep kids
active and interested,” said Randy
Van Peursem, a member of the Dutch
Heritage Boosters.
First up for the activities will be a
puppet show focused on the Dutch
stories of Sinterklaas.
“The kids love the puppet show and
the games. We keep things moving
pretty fast,” Van Peursem said.
After the puppet show, the children
break into three groups. Pre-kindergarten
and kindergarten students will
play “Drop the Horse” which honors
Sinterklaas’s horse. First and second
grade will play the memory game
with Sinterklaas themed cards. Third
and fourth grade will play “Schieten
Noten” (shooting nuts). All grade
levels will also have the option to
color with crayons and coloring
pages provided.
Finally, everyone will sing a final
song and say good-bye to Sinterklaas
and Piet. Chocolate treats will be
passed out for the kids.
“What I enjoy most is seeing the
multi-generational interaction from
the young pre-kindergarten students
to the college volunteers and adults
in the gym,” Van Peursem said. “Sinterklaas
Dag is a fun way to start the
Christmas season. The diversity of our
students and residents is great to see
and it’s a great way to build community
and meet neighbors.” F

hosts holiday
celebration

Christmas on
Nov. 30
The view of downtown Estherville
on Thursday evening, Nov. 30,
will be reminiscent of a painting
by Currier and Ives.
There will be Christmas carolers,
horse-drawn hayrides, tubas playing
Christmas carols and children visiting
Santa Claus.
It’s a beautiful night that happens
every year during Estherville’s Winter
Nights & Holidays Lights celebration
featuring TubaChristmas.
This year the event kicks off at 5 p.m.
There will be something to get everyone
in the family excited.
Many of the downtown businesses
will be offering holiday open houses and
sales for those looking to get a jump start
on their Christmas shopping.
“First off, I like a good deal. I enjoy
shopping and getting a great start on
my Christmas shopping and this is
a great chance to do that,” said Lexie
Ruter, executive director of the Estherville
Area Chamber of Commerce.
There are also horse drawn wagon
rides, carolers going around town,
two performances of TubaChristmas
and Santa’s House will be open for
the first time of the season.
“The horse drawn wagon rides are
amazing. They have these big, beautiful
horses that look like Clydesdales
that pull this cool, red sleigh around
downtown,” Ruter said. “Santa’s
House is also such a great part of
Estherville’s Christmas
season. It’s free so it’s
great because all people
can come and enjoy it.”
After sitting on Santa’s
lap, taking a tour of the
brightly lit town in a horse-drawn
carriage and sneaking some goodies
while doing a little shopping, the next
sense to satisfy would be the ears.
And Estherville has that covered,
too.
Groups of carolers will be singing
Christmas tunes as they roam the
downtown streets. They also make
stops in stores to delight the shoppers
inside with some carols.
“We usually call up the high school
and the college and they pull together
a couple of groups that go around
singing Christmas songs,” Ruter said.
“We’re lucky to have musically inclined
groups in our community.”
In addition to carolers, event goers
can tune their ears to tubas. There
will be two TubaChristmas concerts
during the evening. The shows are at

Church and the 7 p.m. show

The final concert will be the finale
for the evening and will take place in
the upstairs main part of the library.
The whole evening is a delight and
while Ruter loves the shopping aspect
she also loves watching the excitement
in the faces of the children at the
event.
“I love seeing all the kids and seeing
how excited they are to see Santa
and the horse drawn carriage rides,”
Ruther said.
“I love seeing them pulling on their
mom or dad’s hands and calling for
them to keep up because they can’t
help but run because they are so excited
for the season.” F

Congo, South Korea and Ecuador,
most recently sang for
the Pentecost’s Sunday Mass at
Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican
City and throughout Italy.
The Festival Brass Ensemble
is composed of professional

Symphony, South Dakota
Symphony and the Northwest
Iowa Symphony. The
ten-member ensemble will
