Welcome to the Christmas
issue of Primary Times
We’ve enjoyed putting this issue together for you, although it
has been very difficult to keep our festive spirit under control! All
those pictures of Christmas trees, snowmen and elves has made it
almost impossible not to start writing our lists to Santa already.
With Christmas and New Year around the corner, it’s an exciting
time of year and there is plenty to do to keep you entertained.
You’ll find lots of fantastic events and activities in our What’s On
Guide, many of them are free, so pop along and join in the fun.
Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a Panto or a play, and
you’ll find something to entertain the whole family in our Box
Office listings. Oh yes you will!
As usual there are some amazing competitions to enter as well.
There are family tickets to see Home For Christmas at the Lichfield
Garrick Theatre and A Family Ticket to The North Pole Adventure

Christmas tree. But other than size, what
are the things to consider when buying
your Christmas centrepiece?
Each tree species can be a little different in
size, scent and needle retention so it’s difficult
to know which Christmas tree to buy. Delight
your family and guests this Christmas by using
Forestry Commission England’s expert guide to
picking the perfect tree for you.
NORWAY SPRUCE
Considered the traditional Christmas tree,
the Norway Spruce is best known for:
A wonderful shape and an abundance
of branches – great for hanging lots of
decorations!
A lovely ‘Christmassy’ scent that’s perfect at
this time of year
Who does it suit?
With a long lasting scent and a traditional
shape, Norway spruce are perfect for those
who appreciate the classic look and smell of
Christmas.
TIPS
To help your spruce retain its needles
you need to place it away from any
radiators/fires and water it every day.
NORDMANN FIR
The star qualities of a Nordmann fir are:
Having soft foliage and an even shape –
making it a joy to decorate!
Glossy, dark green needles that have a
whitish/light blue underside
Who does it suit?
With its big needles which are lovely and soft,
Nordmann fir are perfect for those with
young children.
TIPS
You will need a big space to show off a
Nordmann fir in its full glory. For a 6ft tall

LODGEPOLE PINE
The Lodgepole pine is an ideal Christmas
tree due to its:

wonderful pine scent

Lodgepole pines are perfect for those who like
a long festive season and decorate their tree as
early as possible.
TIPS
High ceilings are a must for this tree;
make sure you measure the height of
your room where you plan to put the tree
before you go pick one up from the forest!

Taking place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1st -17th Dec and daily from 18th - 23rd Dec, the Winter Wonderfarm sees Lower Drayton Farm’s

With two different packages on offer, all children will have the chance to meet Santa in his grotto to tell them what they would like to see under the tree on Christmas

At Christmas, music finds an
audience far beyond the stalls
and pews of those who normally
hear it. Singing carols together
evokes peace, love and hope
while offering a shared collective
experience all too rare in today’s society. But you can hear beautiful
choral music almost every day in churches and cathedrals across the
country during daily services such as sung Eucharist and evensong.
The boy and girl choristers of Lichfield Cathedral are given
substantial scholarships to support their education at the Cathedral
School, without which some may not otherwise have the opportunity
to attend such a school, and they sing in the Cathedral five days
a week. They gain an unrivalled musical education and develop
outstanding performance skills while benefitting from a broad and
balanced independent school education.
Lichfield Cathedral School is offering boys aged 6-11 and girls aged
9-13 the chance to try choral music at a free Singing Workshop on
Saturday 20 January from 9.30am to 3pm. Chorister auditions will be

Primary Stars
Stoke City Community Trust have begun the 2nd year of
delivering Primary Stars, a national programme funded by the
Premier League Charitable fund, aimed at using the appeal
of Premier League clubs to inspire children to learn, be active
and develop important life skills. It uses the popularity of
Football to inspire pupils in Physical Education as well as other
curriculum areas such as Maths, Literacy and PSHE
with downloadable resources for teachers across
Key Stages 1 and 2.
A recent Literacy programme enabled pupils to go to the Stoke
City stadium and interview each other in the clubs media suite,
and primary school pupils across Stoke-on-Trent to enjoy a
fun-filled literacy event at the stadium with author and football

YHA offering families in
need a free holiday
Leading youth charity YHA (England and
Wales) is giving families a free short break
in one of its Youth Hostels thanks to its new
Family Breaks initiative. It is open to families
in Stoke on Trent struggling with financial
hardship, disability, long-term illness,
bereavement, homelessness or other challenging circumstances.
YHA Family Breaks recognises the benefits of quality family time away from
the normal home environment and that family time is the cornerstone of
children’s happiness and wellbeing. It is part of YHA’s brand new Breaks
Programme which aims to reach young people and families with the most
challenging lives and provide them with life changing experiences. Funding
is also provided to young people from low-income households participating
in educational trips through school or youth groups. To apply visit

CHRISTMAS CARD!
Every year Primary Times asks children
to create the picture for our Christmas
Card. This year we received a sack full of
wonderful entries and we would like to
thank you all for taking the time to draw,
colour, paint and glitter your designs for us!
The overall winner of the competition is
Holly Zheng’s, aged 6 from Garnetbank
Primary School in Glasgow who will receive
50 Christmas cards made up in her design of
Santa next to a Christmas Tree.
We were so overwhelmed by the standard
of entries that we have also decided to award
two runner up prizes who will also receive
50 copies of their designs made into cards,
