Primary Times WINTER Issue | www.primarytimes.net/buckinghamshire

376 acres of Festive Fun at the
National Trust’s Cliveden this winter
Be charmed by National Trust’s Cliveden this festive season.
Whether you’d like to relive old traditions, such as ambling
around on your favourite winter walk, or create new ones,
such as exploring this year’s Christmas Trail.
‘Cliveden House has always been a hotel’, as famously quipped
by Harold Macmillan. So when the National Trust sold the lease to
Iconic Luxury Hotels in 2012, not much changed. Guests still come
and go; lavish dinners are enjoyed and unforgettable memories
are made. And now, for a limited time only, it’s your chance to
peek inside Cliveden’s iconic mansion house. On multiple dates in
November, enjoy an exclusive guided tour of Cliveden House where
you’ll hear of the secrets and scandals which afflicted the estate
throughout Cliveden’s 350-year history. After the tour, enjoy a
two-course lunch served in the National Trust Orangery Café. The
tour costs £35, which includes admission to the estate and lunch.
Booking is essential.
From December, Cliveden’s new Christmas trail offers little ones
the opportunity to train at Angel Academy; a fun mission-style trail
around the estate where children will complete tasks in order to
graduate. They’ll learn how to ‘fly’, perfect their magic and complete
other activities which, if successfully completed, they’ll be presented
with their angel wings. Trails costs £5 per child and are free for
accompanying adults (usual admission to the estate applies). The
Christmas trail runs weekends in December and from Wednesday
20 December to Saturday 23 December, from 11am to 2.30pm.
Also from December, Cliveden’s shop will once again be offering
lush green Yew trees for you to bring home that National Trust
Christmas charm. All trees come pre-netted, making it safe and
easy for you to take home. The gift shop also offers a wide variety
of Christmas ornaments and gifts for you to treat the loved ones in
your life.
Cliveden gives the whole family a chance to stretch their legs
throughout the festive season, the perfect way to end or begin your
year with some fresh air. If you feel like exploring, then go for a
winter walk through the dog-friendly woodlands to catch winter
views of the Berkshire country side. Whilst there, discover the
natural play trail where around every corner there’s a new challenge
to test children’s exploring, balancing and den building skills. Make
sure you find ‘Clive’s Den’, an oversized hide-out constructed by
Cliveden’s rangers, complete with picnic tables.
Cliveden is open every day, all year round, only closing on Christmas
Eve and Christmas Day. Giving you plenty of opportunity to get into
the great outdoors this Christmas.
Performing Arts
Schools throughout
the region joined
together to perform
live on stage to a full
house at Waterside
Theatre, Aylesbury
this Autumn. It was
truly a night to
remember for each
and every one of
the talented young
performers involved.
Stagecoach Aylesbury got the event off to a
magical start with ‘Matilda – Stage and Screen’, a vibrant piece
encompassing great songs from the ‘Matilda’ film as well as the
musical. Stagecoach Milton Keynes’ dynamic Dance Troupe wowed
the audience with a mesmerising Street Bollywood Routine. The
Showcase involved a star cast of 6-16-year olds from 18 local
Stagecoach Centres.
“We thought the show was fantastic and were very proud to be
Stagecoach parents as all pieces really were outstanding.
The sheer enjoyment in all of their faces was great to see.
Thank you so much for offering such wonderful opportunities. The
kids really are very lucky”. Stagecoach Parent.
Stagecoach educates students by stretching imagination and
There’s an adventure to be had this
Christmas at Hughenden
Step through the keyhole into an adventure in wonderland this
Christmas at Hughenden, as the National Trust presents the quirky
tale of Lewis Carroll. The Victorian Manor will be decked out in all
of its usual Christmas charm, inspired this year by Carroll’s magical
tale.
Let your imagination run wild as you stumble into a tale of nonsense
and riddles, as we explore the 19th century novel through themed
decorations and interpretation. Throughout the estate Hughenden’s
staff and volunteers have carefully recreated scenes from Lewis
Carroll’s classic novel, to create an immersive magical experience
for all to enjoy. With their typical creative flair, volunteers have
knitted jam tarts that look so good you could eat them, made more
paper roses than you’ve ever seen, and have successfully tried their
hand at crafting glittery hedgehogs from books.
Visitors can join a festive tea party in the dining room, see playing
cards cascading through the Inner Hall, or find a caterpillar in the
bed! The theme extends into the grounds with activities throughout
the gardens for young explorers. Follow a family friendly trail in the
gardens, go down a rabbit hole, through the willow tunnel and play
croquet on the terrace.
magical school will be welcoming students right up until Christmas
Eve, and as an extra special treat, Santa will be taking time out of
his busy schedule to meet and greet all of his new recruits. Whether
it’s giving Santa an insight into what’s on their Christmas wish list
or asking him questions about Rudolph and his sleigh, Santa and
his elves will be there with open ears between 10am and 5pm most
