Lake District 

Sitting on the shores of Derwentwater, Keswick offers its visitors the 

perfect holiday destination. It is a bustling market town, with an array 

of independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. 

A short stroll from the town centre to the south and 

you can enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of 

Derwentwater. Dip your toes in the water, take a trip 

on the Launch or simply relax and enjoy the views. 

A wander in the opposite direction leads you to Fitz 

Park, with the river Greta running alongside. Watch a 

game of cricket, enjoy a game of bowls or tennis or 

simply savour the moment and breathe in the fresh, 

clear air. 

You will never be short of something to do in Keswick, 

its two parks, museums, theatre, cinema, swimming 

pool, galleries and attractions offer something to suit 

all tastes and budgets.

Keswick’s 

Enduring Appeal 

Keswick Tourism Association (formerly known as the Keswick Town Publicity 

Association) has been producing a Keswick Guide for many years. 

In several of the later editions (1950’s), Hugh Walpole, 

author of the “Herries” chronicles and resident of 

Brackenburn, Manesty, said, “Make Keswick your 

headquarters, climb Helvellyn by moonlight, or see the 

sun rise over Gable, and you will not doubt the truth 

of that word (beauties).” 

The origins of today's tourism industry began in the 

late 18 th C when the first visitors started to arrive 

encouraged by the area's close connections with 

famous writers such as Coleridge, Ruskin, Wordsworth 

and Southey and popularity with artists such as Turner 

and Constable. A 1783 Travellers' Guide stated 'Keswick 

receives great benefit from the resort of gentry to see 

the romantic lakes and mountains that surround it'. 

As war in Europe brought 'The Grand Tour' to an 

end and roads began to improve, numbers of visitors 

increased. In the 1860's the building of the Cockermouth, 

Keswick and Penrith railway line led to a dramatic 

increase in visitors and Keswick began to be 

transformed from a small market town to the thriving 

tourist centre it is today.

know Keswick. They will be wiser

Visit our Villages 

There are many villages and hamlets that surround the market town 

of Keswick. They are home to many local residents but you can also find 

accommodation, cafes, galleries and attractions. They are often the 

starting point for some wonderful walks, be it along the banks of the river, 

through a forest or up into the fells.

These small settlements have been in existence for a 

very long time and often, their name gives a clue about 

their history. 

Grange means a farm, usually belonging to a monastery. 

In this case, the monks of Furness Abbey built a 

monastic grange here in medieval times. The well-known 

double-arched bridge was not built until 1675. 

Grange lies within the Borrowdale Valley, along with 

Rosthwaite, Stonethwaite, Seatoller and Seathwaite. 

Borrowdale is taken from the Norse for “valley with a 

fort”. The Norse arrived in Cumbria around 925 AD. 

Thwaite is another Norse word meaning clearing and 

you will see that many of the villages bear that name. 

Braithwaite means “broad clearing”, the Bassen in 

Bassenthwaite is likely to be an anglo-french surname 

or nickname and Seathwaite means “clearing in the 

sedges (grasses/rushes)”. The village of Threlkeld 

also takes its name from old Norse, thrall, ‘slave’ and 

kelda ‘spring’ as does Watendlath - vatn-endi-hlaða 

or "water-end-barn". 

However these beautiful villages and hamlets came 

to be, they are most certainly worth a visit.

Enjoy local culture, wildlife, and scenery with the Lake 

District National Park. Their programme of events and 

guided walks run from Easter to the end of October and 

include everything from family days out to fell hikes.

Follow the scenic 10 mile waymarked walk around 

Derwentwater or for a shorter alternative enjoy a 

delightful 4 mile stroll around Buttermere beginning 

and ending in the hamlet of the same name. Explore the 

shoreline of Thirlmere or walk past historic Mirehouse 

to the ancient St Bega’s Church on the shores of 

Bassenthwaite Lake. 

Keswick is a great place to visit if you love wildlife. 

Red squirrels and deer can be seen in the woods and 

forests. View the Bassenthwaite Ospreys through 

telescopes in Dodd Wood or via the webcam display 

at the Whinlatter Visitor Centre. Keep your eyes 

out for other birds of prey too such as buzzards and 

peregrines. Also spot our resident Herdwick sheep.

useful for linear walks, exploring the local valleys 

and villages and for viewing our fantastic scenery. 

Using both the bus and the Keswick Launch on 

Derwentwater gives you the opportunity to enjoy car

for people with limited mobility, including wheelchair 

users, pushchairs, and the visually impaired.

Walk the Wainwrights 

Visit Whinlatter Forest, England’s only true mountain 

forest with a choice of graded walks on marked trails. 

Head to Dodd Wood with its network of forest walks 

aswell as a track up to the summit of Little Dodd where 

you’ll be rewarded with fine views. Great Wood is 

an extensive woodland area to the south of Keswick 

overlooking Derwentwater. 

Keswick is an ideal base from which to start your 

conquest of the Wainwrights. Starting with the smallest 

Castle Crag there are 214 fells and mountains in the 

seven volumes of Alfred Wainwright's Pictorial Guide 

to the Lakeland Fells. The Northern fells book is the 

nearest to Keswick but the Lake District is so compact 

that any of the 214 fells could be reached within a day.

National Trust Waymarked Walk

A walk of art 

An easy or moderate walk close to Keswick, the National 

Trust have created seven waymarked walks through 

the woods and along the lakeshore of Derwentwater. 


Starting and finishing at Derwentwater Independent 

Hostel this walk takes you on a journey through three 

centuries of landscape art.

Latrigg Circular 

Route 

Although there are currently still bridges down on the Keswick to Threlkeld 

railway path a new section of permitted footpath leaves the existing 

railway trail approximately 400m past Low Briery. The new path takes you 

through Brundholme Woods to Brundholme Road giving walkers access to 

Latrigg to complete this circular route. 

– What you need to know – 

Starting Point / Moot Hall Keswick 

Distance / c. 5 miles 

Time / approximately 2.5 hours 

1. Leave the Market Square between the Royal Oak 

& Greggs. Turn left into Station St and keep straight 

ahead. At the junction cross at the pedestrian crossing 

and go straight on. Cross the bridge over the river Greta 

and continue on the road between Upper and Lower 

Fitz Park. Just as the road bends to the right take a 

path on your left up to Keswick Leisure Pool. Take the 

path round the right hand side of the swimming pool 

and then turn right on to the old railway line path. 

2. Follow the railway path for some distance passing 

a board walk section. After Low Briery Holiday 

Park cross the next bridge. Immediately before the 

next bridge take the path on your left signposted 

Brundholme Road. 

3. Follow this path through the wood. As the path 

climbs uphill take the first path to your right as 

indicated by a permitted route arrow on a marker post. 

Follow the path through the woods above the river. 

Once over a bridge the path climbs and drops again. 

Ignore a stepped path down to your right and keep 

on the same path. At a fork turn left and follow the 

path uphill. Continue on this path as it winds upwards 

to meet Brundholme Road. 

4. Turn right onto the metalled road. Shortly leave the 

road by a choice of gate or stile on your left signposted 

Skiddaw. Ignore the immediate fork to your left and 

continue forwards signposted Latrigg and Skiddaw. 

5. Keep on this uphill path until you come to a gate. 

Immediately through the gate turn left off the path 

to head diagonally up a grassy path. Follow this path 

to the summit with fantastic views over Keswick, 

Derwentwater and the surrounding mountains. 

6. The path continues down to a bench. Although a 

great vantage spot it is not always the best spot for a 

picnic as it can be quite windy. To return to Keswick 

keep on the path downhill until you come to a fork 

and take the left one. Follow the path as it zigzags its 

way down taking care as this part can often be muddy. 

7. At a t-junction turn left to walk downhill alongside 

a tree plantation. Follow the path all the way down 

through a gate, over 2 streams and through a second 

gate at Spooney Green before crossing the bridge over 

the A66. A short distance after this the path meets 

the road. 

8. At the road turn right and continue for 300 metres. 

Turn left off the road through a gate into Fitz Park. 

Turn left along the path and carry on past the BMX 

track. 

9. At the bottom of the hill turn left to walk through 

Fitz Park past the children's playground. Leave the 

park and turn right into the road and retrace your 

steps back into town.

By Road 

Keswick is easily reached via junction 40 of the 

M6 (Penrith) and the A66 or via the A1 and the A66. 

For a scenic route coming from the South leave 

the M6 at junction 36 and take the A591 through 

Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere. 

By Rail 

The nearest railway station to Keswick is Penrith, 

on the West Coast Main Line, a distance of 17 miles. 

A bus service, taking forty minutes, connects Penrith 

railway station with Keswick Bus Station. You can 

hire a PAYG low emission car at Penrith Station. 

By Taxi 

Taxis from Keswick will meet trains at Penrith by prior 

arrangement. Contact Davies Taxis on 017687 72676 

for transport to and around Keswick. 

By Coach 

National Express Rapide Services operate to Keswick. 

By Air 

Keswick is within easy driving distance of several 

airports, the nearest being Newcastle, Manchester 

and Liverpool. All airports offer car hire and have 

easy access to the M6. 

By Ferry 

For visitors from Europe there are sailings to Hull 

and Newcastle. The journey from Hull ferry terminal 

to Keswick by car is approximately 3 1/2 hours and 

to Newcastle is 2 1/4 hours. The journey to Stranraer 

ferry terminal for crossings to Ireland is 3 1/2 hours. 

By Bus 

You can step on a bus to explore the beauty of 

Borrowdale or cross the Honister Pass for the 

breath-taking views of Buttermere and Crummock 

Water, returning to Keswick over the Whinlatter Pass. 

By Keswick Launch 

Why not see the spectacular scenery around 

Derwentwater from one of the Keswick Launches. 

stop off at one of the boat landings to take a stroll 

along the lakeshore and catch the launch again further 

along the route. With seven stops around the lake it 

also provides the excellent starting or finishing point 

to longer walks up the surrounding fells.
