Derwentwater -
The Hub of the
Lake District
Sitting on the shores of Derwentwater, Keswick offers its visitors the
perfect holiday destination. It is a bustling market town, with an array
of independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants.
A short stroll from the town centre to the south and
you can enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of
Derwentwater. Dip your toes in the water, take a trip
on the Launch or simply relax and enjoy the views.
A wander in the opposite direction leads you to Fitz
Park, with the river Greta running alongside. Watch a
game of cricket, enjoy a game of bowls or tennis or
simply savour the moment and breathe in the fresh,
clear air.
You will never be short of something to do in Keswick,
its two parks, museums, theatre, cinema, swimming
pool, galleries and attractions offer something to suit
all tastes and budgets.
Keswick’s
Enduring Appeal
Keswick Tourism Association (formerly known as the Keswick Town Publicity
Association) has been producing a Keswick Guide for many years.
In several of the later editions (1950’s), Hugh Walpole,
author of the “Herries” chronicles and resident of
Brackenburn, Manesty, said, “Make Keswick your
headquarters, climb Helvellyn by moonlight, or see the
sun rise over Gable, and you will not doubt the truth
of that word (beauties).”
The origins of today's tourism industry began in the
late 18 th C when the first visitors started to arrive
encouraged by the area's close connections with
famous writers such as Coleridge, Ruskin, Wordsworth
and Southey and popularity with artists such as Turner
and Constable. A 1783 Travellers' Guide stated 'Keswick
receives great benefit from the resort of gentry to see
the romantic lakes and mountains that surround it'.
As war in Europe brought 'The Grand Tour' to an
end and roads began to improve, numbers of visitors
increased. In the 1860's the building of the Cockermouth,
Keswick and Penrith railway line led to a dramatic
increase in visitors and Keswick began to be
transformed from a small market town to the thriving
tourist centre it is today.
– A quote from an old guide –
Not a few visitors reaching
Keswick from other parts of the
Lake District exclaim: Why did
we not come here earlier, in fact
at first? Why forsooth, the answer
is apparent: they did not
know Keswick. They will be wiser
another time.
Visit our Villages
There are many villages and hamlets that surround the market town
of Keswick. They are home to many local residents but you can also find
accommodation, cafes, galleries and attractions. They are often the
starting point for some wonderful walks, be it along the banks of the river,
through a forest or up into the fells.
visitkeswick.com/villagesaroundkeswick
01
These small settlements have been in existence for a
very long time and often, their name gives a clue about
their history.
Grange means a farm, usually belonging to a monastery.
In this case, the monks of Furness Abbey built a
monastic grange here in medieval times. The well-known
double-arched bridge was not built until 1675.
Grange lies within the Borrowdale Valley, along with
Rosthwaite, Stonethwaite, Seatoller and Seathwaite.
Borrowdale is taken from the Norse for “valley with a
fort”. The Norse arrived in Cumbria around 925 AD.
Thwaite is another Norse word meaning clearing and
you will see that many of the villages bear that name.
Braithwaite means “broad clearing”, the Bassen in
Bassenthwaite is likely to be an anglo-french surname
or nickname and Seathwaite means “clearing in the
sedges (grasses/rushes)”. The village of Threlkeld
also takes its name from old Norse, thrall, ‘slave’ and
kelda ‘spring’ as does Watendlath - vatn-endi-hlaða
or "water-end-barn".
However these beautiful villages and hamlets came
to be, they are most certainly worth a visit.
to the ancient St Bega’s Church on the shores of
Bassenthwaite Lake.
Keswick is a great place to visit if you love wildlife.
Red squirrels and deer can be seen in the woods and
forests. View the Bassenthwaite Ospreys through
telescopes in Dodd Wood or via the webcam display
at the Whinlatter Visitor Centre. Keep your eyes
out for other birds of prey too such as buzzards and
peregrines. Also spot our resident Herdwick sheep.
Castle Crag there are 214 fells and mountains in the
seven volumes of Alfred Wainwright's Pictorial Guide
to the Lakeland Fells. The Northern fells book is the
Latrigg Circular
Route
Although there are currently still bridges down on the Keswick to Threlkeld
railway path a new section of permitted footpath leaves the existing
railway trail approximately 400m past Low Briery. The new path takes you
through Brundholme Woods to Brundholme Road giving walkers access to
Latrigg to complete this circular route.
– What you need to know –
Starting Point / Moot Hall Keswick
Distance / c. 5 miles
Time / approximately 2.5 hours
1. Leave the Market Square between the Royal Oak
& Greggs. Turn left into Station St and keep straight
ahead. At the junction cross at the pedestrian crossing
and go straight on. Cross the bridge over the river Greta
and continue on the road between Upper and Lower
Fitz Park. Just as the road bends to the right take a
path on your left up to Keswick Leisure Pool. Take the
path round the right hand side of the swimming pool
and then turn right on to the old railway line path.
2. Follow the railway path for some distance passing
a board walk section. After Low Briery Holiday
Park cross the next bridge. Immediately before the
next bridge take the path on your left signposted
Brundholme Road.
3. Follow this path through the wood. As the path
climbs uphill take the first path to your right as
indicated by a permitted route arrow on a marker post.
Follow the path through the woods above the river.
Once over a bridge the path climbs and drops again.
Ignore a stepped path down to your right and keep
on the same path. At a fork turn left and follow the
path uphill. Continue on this path as it winds upwards
to meet Brundholme Road.
4. Turn right onto the metalled road. Shortly leave the
road by a choice of gate or stile on your left signposted
Skiddaw. Ignore the immediate fork to your left and
continue forwards signposted Latrigg and Skiddaw.
5. Keep on this uphill path until you come to a gate.
Immediately through the gate turn left off the path
to head diagonally up a grassy path. Follow this path
to the summit with fantastic views over Keswick,
Derwentwater and the surrounding mountains.
6. The path continues down to a bench. Although a
great vantage spot it is not always the best spot for a
picnic as it can be quite windy. To return to Keswick
keep on the path downhill until you come to a fork
and take the left one. Follow the path as it zigzags its
way down taking care as this part can often be muddy.
7. At a t-junction turn left to walk downhill alongside
a tree plantation. Follow the path all the way down
through a gate, over 2 streams and through a second
gate at Spooney Green before crossing the bridge over
the A66. A short distance after this the path meets
the road.
8. At the road turn right and continue for 300 metres.
Turn left off the road through a gate into Fitz Park.
Turn left along the path and carry on past the BMX
track.
9. At the bottom of the hill turn left to walk through
Fitz Park past the children's playground. Leave the
park and turn right into the road and retrace your
steps back into town.
Choosing
Accommodation
Keswick offers a wide diversity of places to stay to suit all ages, tastes
and pockets. Keswick Tourism Association's website offers a large selection
of accommodation in guest houses, B&Bs, stylish hotels, pubs
and farmhouses.
For those seeking an independent holiday there are
self catering cottages and apartments, static caravans,
camping barns, yurts, pods, luxury lodges and holiday
parks as well as camp sites to pitch your own tent or
caravan.
Wherever you choose to stay, be sure to book through
visitkeswick.com where bookings are commission free.
Keswick Tourism Association
The association that publishes this Guide is the
independent local organisation promoting Keswick
and the surrounding area as a holiday destination.
It represents members from all sizes and types of
tourism establishments and is committed to high
standards of customer satisfaction. All bookings made
through our website, VisitKeswick.com, are completely
commission free meaning that 100% of the money
you pay goes direct to the accommodation provider.
Accommodation
Accommodation featured in this guide has been assessed
to the National Quality Assurance standards – star rated
schemes, assessed under our local initiative – Quality
Cumbria, has signed the Keswick Tourism Quality
Accommodation Charter or are Awaiting Inspection.
There are two national assessing bodies, VisitEngland
and the AA. Both work to National Quality Assurance
standards and use independent, impartial assessors.
Properties are given a quality rating of 1-5 stars and
show the Enjoy England Quality Rose logo (VisitEngland)
or AA logo.
These quality ratings indicate the overall accommodation
standard, cleanliness, ambience, hospitality, service and
quality of food.
The higher the star rating, the higher the quality and
the greater the range of facilities and services offered.
Star ratings are also accompanied by a category which
describes the assessment criteria and includes Hotels,
B&B’s, Self Catering, Hostels and Holiday Parks.
For example, a four star hotel will have greater levels of
service and facilities than a four star B&B.
Accolades
VisitEngland give Gold and Silver awards to hotels and
guest accommodation that not only achieve their overall
rating but also provide exceptional quality throughout;
particularly in service and hospitality.
The AA Gold Stars are awarded to the very best of Guest
Accommodation within the three, four and five star
ratings. The AA give red stars to select hotels in each
star grading. These are awarded ‘Inspectors’ Choice’
status. AA inspected restaurants are given Rosettes
(one to five) annually for the quality of their food.
Visitor attractions displaying this sign have been
assessed by VisitEngland for the standard of customer
care, hospitality and service as well as the standard of
the toilets, shop and cafe, where applicable.
Quality Cumbria & Superior Award
In addition to VisitEngland and AA ratings, you will
also see the Quality Cumbria logo in this guide.
Quality Cumbria is a local assessment initiative in
partnership with VisitEngland. Although not star
rated it is accredited to ensure that accommodation
meets National Quality Assurance Standards and
should be clean, pleasant and comfortable.
To plan the perfect stay, discuss your needs with the
chosen establishment before making your booking.
Keswick offers opportunities for disabled visitors to
enjoy all aspects of this unique area. Accommodation
providers, restaurants and attractions may cater for
disabled visitors and accommodate specific
requirements.
All accommodation will have an Access or Accessibility
Statement. This is a written, clear, accurate and
honest description of the facilities and services
available. It will help you make an informed decision
about whether that business can meet your needs.
Compliments, Comments and Concerns
We welcome feedback about your visit to Keswick.
Should a problem arise during your stay, whenever
possible, discuss it with the management of the
property first. The problem may be rectified without
delay. If this doesn’t work, professional advice is
available from a variety of sources. For contact details
please visit visitkeswick.com or call Keswick Tourism
on 017687 75738.
Fairtrade
Keswick has been a Fairtrade Town since 2005.
Particularly strong support for Fairtrade comes from
the accommodation sector in which there are more
self-catering properties, guest houses, hotels and
hostels offering Fairtrade tea and coffee (and often
more) to their guests than in any other comparable
tourist centre in the country. To find out more, look on
the KTA website for businesses flagging FT, or go to:
The Scafell Hotel is a wonderful Country House Hotel located in
the very heart of Borrowdale, considered by many as England’s
finest valley, surrounded by mighty fells, tranquil meadows and
crystal clear waters. A paradise for the walker and a perfect
centre from which to visit other parts of the Lake District.
The Hotel is situated almost at the foot of Great Gable and the
Scafell Massif, and is regarded one of the Lake District’s renowned
headquarters for climbers and hill walkers. Keen anglers will
appreciate the Scafell Hotel, as there is excellent fly fishing on the
River Derwent and in Derwentwater. Those who are content with
gentle rambling or just lazing on restful lawns fringed by trees
amidst imposing scenery will be equally happy staying here.
Our rooms were recently fully refurbished, in a Warm and Rich
Country House style with a ‘Contemporary Twist’ perfect
for setting the scene for a peaceful and relaxing break in the
beautiful Borrowdale Valley.
The Restaurant, Lounges and Bar have been tastefully decorated
and furnished to retain that all important Country House
warmth, allowing for complete relaxation after a great days
walking on the Fells, and maybe even a little ‘nap’ by the fire
after a delicious five course Dinner.
Under the constant direction of owner’s Miles Jessop MBE (Chairman)
and Andrew Nelson (Managing Director) the Management and Team
of Scafell Hotel offer truly warm and friendly service.
