70th anniversary of 7th Signal Regiment at Cabarlah Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio took the salute and reviewed the parade at the 70th anniversary celebrations of the 7th Signal Regiment at Cabarlah. Cr Antonio inspected the regiment’s two divisions of soldiers before him, accompanied by the Commander of the 6th Brigade, Brigadier Susan Coyle DSC CSM, and the Commanding Officer of 7th Signal Regiment (EW) Lt Col Robert Watson. The 6th Brigade is based in Sydney, and has units in a number of capital cities and in Cabarlah. During World War Two, the Cabarlah Camp was occupied firstly by the 11th Light Horse, followed by Headquarters Queensland Lines of Communication Area Signals Regiment which vacated the property in early 1944. This was followed by the Staff School (Australia) from 1944 until 1946 when the school moved to Fort Queenscliff in Victoria and became the Australian Staff College. The 7th Signal Regiment was “born” on Christmas Day 1940 when a unit known as the Australian Special Wireless Troop started operations. At the end of the Pacific War, the headquarters of that unit moved from Kalinga, Brisbane, to become a Special Wireless Section at Mornington Racecourse in Victoria. This section sought a more permanent location and for various reasons Cabarlah was chosen, and on February 3, 1947, the Unit, renamed 101 Wireless Regiment, commenced operations. The original strength of the Regiment was two officers and 22 operators and technicians. The unit was redesignated 7th Signal Regiment on December 22, 1964. Relevance of base stronger than ever The 7th Signal Regiment at Cabarlah has just celebrated its 70th anniversary, and the regiment’s relevance is arguably stronger now than ever before. For some years there was speculation among political and defence ranks about the future of the Cabarlah base, but the release of a Defence White Paper two years ago has confirmed the future of the base in an era of electronic warfare, and the increasing importance of the cyber sphere in defence. Commanding Officer of 7th Signal Regiment Lt Col Robert (Doc) Watson said there were not many units where the relevance of the unit’s role has increased over time. He said the Unit must always strive for relevance, and to do this, it must never accept the status quo. “We must be versatile, agile and adaptable,” Lt Col Watson said. During the past 70 years, members of the 7th Signal Regiment have served in Singapore, Malaya, Vietnam, Somalia, Bouganville, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Currently the Regiment has units deployed in harm’s way. By MILES NOLLER Jack back home again for Cabarlah celebrations A man who was an original member of 7th Signal Regiment in 1947, Jack Fenton, revisited his old “home on the hill” at Cabarlah last week for the unit’s 70th anniversary. Mr Fenton, pictured, who lives in Brisbane, retired from the unit with the rank of Major, in 1975. He said he was a child in Cairns, and saw what was happening during the battle of the Coral Sea, and ended up in the Army and in signals. He helped move the special wireless section in Mornington, Victoria, to Cabarlah. Mr Fenton was competent in Morse and had two languages, Indonesian and Chinese, and gained ADVERTISEMENT many more skills along the way, including a university degree. His role at Cabarlah took him overseas on numerous operations, including Singapore and Vietnam, but he always came back to his “home on the hill” at Cabarlah.
