Local decorator
takes the cake
Pam Orton, Highfields,
a member of the Darling
Downs Branch of
the Queensland Cake
Decorators Association, has
returned from Perth with a
national award from the
Australian National Cake
Decorators seminar and
national competition.
She gained first place
in the open sugarcraft
category.
This section required
competitors to make an
arrangement of Australian
wildflowers and foliage,
make the container or
form in which they were
presented had to be sugar
and the whole exhibit had
to fit within a 400 mm
square.
The competition was
open to decorators from all
over Australia, New Zealand
and other affiliated
countries.
The standard of competition
was extremely high
with every minute detail
scrutinised and marked by
the judges.
The biennial seminar
brings together cake decorators
from all states and
territories as well as leading

are holding a morning melodies on
Wednesday, November 15.
At the annual general meeting held recently,
the president for the next year is Pat
Williams, secretary Valda Fowler and Barbara
Weier is the treasurer.
Our Christmas lunch is on December 13

world, to share skills and
ideas in demonstrations and
workshops, over five days.
The next Seminar will be in
Victoria in 2019.
Pam competes, pictured,
locally, often winning many
prizes including Champion
Exhibit at the Toowoomba
Show and also competes in
State Competitions.
She describes herself as
a sugar artist whose hobby
became a passion.
As a member of the
QCDA she shares her skills
and knowledge with fellow
Morning melodies
members at their monthly
meetings and workshops, at
State seminars and has often
demonstrated at national
seminars too.
She believes in and puts
into practice the aim of the
association, to foster an interest
in the art of cake decorating.”
Pam does a variety of
cakes for all types of celebrations
but her favourite
skill is in making flowers
that look so real that people
smell them, mistaking them
for the natural flowers.

Oddfellows conference
On November 12, 13 and 14 visitors
from Townsville, Victoria and New South
Wales will attend the Queensland Manchester
Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows
Annual Moveable Conference.
It will be held at the Toowoomba Motel
and Events Centre at 2 Burnage Street,
Toowoomba.
Bro Ashley Newton,
LOCAL
Goombungee, is
the Grand Master of the Order in Queensland
and will be chairing the conference.
Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor
Paul Antonio will open the conference at
9am and welcome visitors to Toowoomba.

Lee from Townsville will be installed into
office on

The last week in October was
Birds in Backyards Week and
we were asked to do 20-minute
surveys around our homes.
We did ours at a different
time each day and found the
6am one the most profitable.
In all we listed 41 species and
that did not include a couple of
common ones like Willie Wagtails
and Pied Butcherbird, pictured.
Two weeks before we had
a Restless Flycatcher and a
Mistletoe Bird.
The Restless Flycatcher
looks like a Willie Wagtail from
the back but has a white throat,

so we could include those we
heard, such as White-throated
Gerygone White-browed
Tree-creeper and Sacred Kingfisher.
Perhaps the highlight for the
week was seeing three Fairy
Wrens, the Superb, the Variegated
and the Red Backed.
A wonderful week, and I
am very grateful to our family,
who planted the trees when the
