Active pool supervision
Royal Life Saving is urging
parents across Queensland not
to be complacent about their
child’s safety around water.
Latest Royal Life Saving research
shows that 461 children
under the age of five died due to
drowning in Australia over the
past 15 years, an average of 31
per year. Of these, half were in
home pools and spas.
Active adult supervision had
Over the years, the Toowoomba
and Darling Downs Family
History Society has been given
a number of unnamed or poorly
named photographs.
Recently, while the secretary
and I were tidying up in the back
room, we came across a box
of photos that had been sitting
waiting for our attention.
Some were named, and so off
we went trying to find descendants
who might like them. We
discovered that Beatrice Hoskin
had married David Gray Lamb
and the family lived at Oakey.
It is believed the photos would
have belonged to Beatrice and
contained many photos of nurses
from the Brisbane Royal Hospital
in the 1930s.
We were able to find a niece of
Beatrice Hoskin who now lives
in Brisbane and she is identifying
which of the photos belong
to family members and we will
then send them to her.
Another couple of photos
were of Werna Reid who married
Herbert Somerset Vidgen.
This led us to contact the niece
by marriage of one of Werna’s
sons, Graham, and she came into
the library and collected them to
give to her uncle who lives in
Brisbane as is doing the family
history.
Of course, we still have a lot
of photos that, unfortunatel,y
just have a given name on them
so they will remain homeless.
On the back of one of the
group photos is written Dr Mc-
Lean, Matron Sorrenson 2nd
year Grade 78 or 79 – Brisbane
Hospital 1930 (?). On the front
some of the nurses have been
identified by surname Hirst,
Hoskin, Hicks, Noller, Reid.
We now know who the Hoskin
and Reid are, but does anyone
else know of a family member
who was a nurse at the Brisbane
Royal Hospital at that time?
If so, we’d love to hear from
you and happy to give you a
copy of the photo.
I wonder just how many
photos will survive from our
digital age as many people never
print them and even if we do, the
prints will certainly not last like
the old studio photos. - Marie
Green, president.
The Cultural Heritage Network
Toowoomba Region is
holding its annual fundraiser by
hosting Don’t Dress for Dinner,
a comedy by Marc Camoletti.
The play is “…a mile-aminute
farce...” which takes a
humorous look at the problems
of a typical married man planning
a romantic weekend with
his chic Parisian mistress in
his charming converted French
farmhouse.
He has arranged for a cordon
bleu chef to prepare gourmet
delights, and has invited his
best friend Robert along too, to
provide the alibi. It's foolproof;
what could possibly go wrong?
The night will “...make your
belly shake with laughter and
ducking inside to grab something
can have tragic consequences
if a toddler is left unattended
by water.”
“Actively supervise children
around water, check your pool
fence and gate, and never prop
the pool gate open. Swimming
lessons are great, but they are no
substitute for active supervision
and a pool fence in good working
order.”
set your mind spinning through
a tangled web of deception, misconception,
bumbling evasion
and back-peddling explanation.”
The fundraiser will be held
on Friday 17 November at The
Repertory Theatre, 94 Margaret
Election promises
I was very interested to read
in the Toowoomba Chronicle of
October 30 the election promises
of all the candidates for the
forthcoming contest in the electorate
of Toowoomba North.
More specifically, as a resident
of Highfields, I was most
interested to read the commentary
by the Labor candidate.
The very first thing he promised
was “further development
in Highfields.”
I found this both interesting
and ironic for one reason. In
the lead-up to the electoral redistribution
in May this year,
Get up political views
Labor says the far-left organisation
“Get Up!” is just a
cross-section of people with different
political views including
LNP supporters.
The extraordinary claim was
made by the Labor spokesman
on ABC morning radio on
27/10/17.
The ABC compere let it go
without comment even though it
is well known that this group donates
money and manpower to
Labor and Greens candidates, or
anyone supporting the extremes
leftist socialist agenda.
according to The Australian.
Such generosity with union
members’ funds for an independent
group.
“Get Up!” is a known extremist
Greens and the ABC clearly approves
their errant propaganda
being broadcast unchallenged.
in the electorate of Nanango so
that we, the voters in Highfields,
What could have possibly
happened in the five months
interest in us, the voters
of Highfields? - Colin McKay,
70th anniversary of 7th Signal Regiment at Cabarlah
Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio
took the salute and reviewed the
parade at the 70th anniversary celebrations
of the 7th Signal Regiment
at Cabarlah.
Cr Antonio inspected the regiment’s
two divisions of soldiers
before him, accompanied by the
Commander of the 6th Brigade,
Brigadier Susan Coyle DSC CSM,
and the Commanding Officer of 7th
Signal Regiment (EW) Lt Col Robert
Watson.
The 6th Brigade is based in Sydney,
and has units in a number of
capital cities and in Cabarlah.
During World War Two, the
Cabarlah Camp was occupied firstly
by the 11th Light Horse, followed
by Headquarters Queensland
Lines of Communication Area Signals
Regiment which vacated the
property in early 1944.
This was followed by the Staff
School (Australia) from 1944 until
1946 when the school moved to
Fort Queenscliff in Victoria and became
the Australian Staff College.
The 7th Signal Regiment was
“born” on Christmas Day 1940
when a unit known as the Australian
Special Wireless Troop started
operations. At the end of the Pacific
War, the headquarters of that unit
moved from Kalinga, Brisbane, to
become a Special Wireless Section
at Mornington Racecourse in Victoria.
This section sought a more permanent
location and for various
reasons Cabarlah was chosen, and
on February 3, 1947, the Unit, renamed
101 Wireless Regiment,
commenced operations.
The original strength of the Regiment
was two officers and 22 operators
and technicians. The unit was
redesignated 7th Signal Regiment
on December 22, 1964.
Relevance of base
stronger than ever
The 7th Signal Regiment at
Cabarlah has just celebrated its
70th anniversary, and the regiment’s
relevance is arguably
stronger now than ever before.
For some years there was
speculation among political and
defence ranks about the future
of the Cabarlah base, but the
release of a Defence White Paper
two years ago has confirmed
the future of the base in an era
of electronic warfare, and the increasing
importance of the cyber
sphere in defence.
Commanding Officer of 7th
Signal Regiment Lt Col Robert
(Doc) Watson said there were
not many units where the relevance
of the unit’s role has increased
over time.
He said the Unit must always
strive for relevance, and to do
this, it must never accept the status
quo.
“We must be versatile, agile
and adaptable,” Lt Col Watson
said.
During the past 70 years,
members of the 7th Signal Regiment
have served in Singapore,
Malaya, Vietnam, Somalia,
Bouganville, East Timor, Papua
New Guinea, Solomon Islands,
Afghanistan, and Iraq. Currently
the Regiment has units deployed
in harm’s way.
By MILES NOLLER
Jack back home again for Cabarlah celebrations
A man who was an original member
of 7th Signal Regiment in 1947,
Jack Fenton, revisited his old “home
on the hill” at Cabarlah last week for
the unit’s 70th anniversary.
Mr Fenton, pictured, who lives in
Brisbane, retired from the unit with
the rank of Major, in 1975.
He said he was a child in Cairns,
and saw what was happening during
the battle of the Coral Sea, and ended
up in the Army and in signals.
He helped move the special wireless
section in Mornington, Victoria,
to Cabarlah.
Mr Fenton was competent in
Morse and had two languages, Indonesian
and Chinese, and gained
many more skills along the way, including
a university degree.
His role at Cabarlah took him
overseas on numerous operations,
including Singapore and Vietnam,
but he always came back to his
“home on the hill” at Cabarlah.
“If KAP hold the balance of
power after the next election
we will address the price crisis
by changing the way the government
regulates its poles and
wires businesses to ensure they
stop ripping off customers,” candidate
Mr John Hill said.
“Condamine households need
real action now, not decades
from now. Condamine can’t afford
another three years of an
MP without any plan on power
prices,” Mr Hill said.
The cost of regulated poles
and wires makes up the greatest
proportion of a customer’s bill.
Regulated electricity network
charges account for about 48
per cent of an average customer’s
bill, and other unnecessary
regulated charges account for
• Remove unnecessary fees
Sign from God
When my husband, Hans Van
Der Valk, died of cancer in
March 2016, an idea was put
together to glorify the name of
Jesus because there were so
many people with cancer etc
and needing help from God.
A group of Christians contributed
to the cost of the sign.
Katter - New inland rail route
Bob Katter, Member for Kennedy
and KAP Federal leader,
with the guidance of KAP State
candidate for Condamine John
Hill are drafting legislation to
change the Federal Government’s
proposed inland rail
route through Millmerran, the
Condamine flood plain, Pittsworth,
Southbrook and onto
Wellcamp to an alternative route
that will protect farms, property
and livelihoods.
Mr Hill said: “Any attempt to
cross the flood plain would cause
unnecessary erosions and create
enormous cost in construction
foundations for the railway line.
Alternative routes are available
that should be considered by the
Minister before a final decision
is made."
Greens candidate
I moved from rural Wales in
my youth and now live in Crows
Since early days I’ve engaged
with initiatives such as clean
better world.
In my local community I’ve
been an advocate for community
services to improve health, safety,
public transport, inclusivity
and protection of heritage.
The farmlands and natural environments
of Condamine need
protection from the impacts of
mining ventures and inland rail.
Also, prime agricultural land
is being eaten up by over development
of housing with ecological
deficit.
Peri-urban areas have been
traumatised by excessive tree
clearing and loss of wildlife
habitats.
I also stand to support conservation
farming practices,
grassroots land care and indigenous
rangers.
Here we have a local, Queensland
and global responsibility
to lower the impacts of climate
change.
I advocate for less dependence
on coal mining which directly
elevates temperatures and
ocean acidity.
History talk on wartime Toowoomba
Toowoomba during WWII
was a city on the front line -
headquarters for the defence of
eastern Australia, large houses
resumed for officer accommodation,
air raid shelters and drills,
operational air sorties, schools
taken over as military hospitals,
a refuge for coastal school children,
and hundreds of Australian
and American troops on rest and
recreation leave.
War-time life in the city is the
subject of the next talk at the
Toowoomba Historical Society.
The speaker is Paul Herbert,
a Toowoomba heritage enthusiast
who has delivered numerous
walking tours in and around
Toowoomba and (with heritage
architect wife Stephanie Keays)
helped organise the Toowoomba
of Rail.
This talk is a reprise of a talk
he gave to a small, but highly appreciative,
audience at Cobb and
Co Museum earlier this year.
The meeting will be held at
the society’s rooms, 49 Lindsay
LETTER
Writing many letters to the
Herald over the years, I have
thrown many an idea and suggestion
for future improvements
for the north and the whole region.
I’ve mentioned a connecting
road from Highfields to Boundary
Road to ease traffic flow, a
new police station and a possible
hospital for Highfields, along
with an adventure park land to
create jobs and tourism.
Driver training suggestion
As we see hundreds of election
signs popping up all over
the area, now is the time to beat
the drum and get yourself a commitment.
I gather the wanna-be politicians
are all reading this Herald
today as I do have another item
that I’m very passionate about a
driver training facility.
I call on interested hopefuls
and organisations to get behind
this cause as we need to change
Remembrance Day Crows Nest
christian comment
If I only had time
By Noel Wilcox
Pastor - Highfields Baptist Church
Some people are good
time managers, others
not so good.
We put so much emphasis
upon time.
It seems to be a commodity
about which we are very much
concerned.
There is an old saying, ‘If you
want someone to do something,
ask a busy person, others don’t
have time.’
The reality is that God has given
us exactly the same amount
of time, 24 hours or 1440 minutes
a day.
The apostle Paul says we
are to redeem the time because
the days are evil, or in another
place, ‘walk circumspectly, not
as fools, but as wise.’
Time is a precious commodity,
we need to be wise about how
we use it.
It is an interesting exercise to
map out your week in 30 minute
segments and chart what you
do for every half hour you are
awake.
It might just be a wake-up
call.
As much as we like to emphasise
time as a commodity, we
need to realise there are different
seasons in our lives.
The Bible seems to address
these times, more than the actual
commodity of time.
We have this example in the
book of Ecclesiastes.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8: To everything
there is a season, A time
for every purpose under heaven:
A time to be born, And a time
to die; A time to plant, And a
time to pluck what is planted;
A time to kill, And a time to
heal; A time to break down, And
a time to build up;
A time to weep, And a time to
laugh; A time to mourn, And a
time to dance;
A time to cast away stones,
And a time to gather stones; A
time to embrace, And a time to
refrain from embracing;
A time to gain, And a time to
lose, A time to keep, And a time
to throw away;
A time to tear, And a time to
sew; A time to keep silence, And
a time to speak;
A time to love, And a time to
hate; A time of war, And a time
of peace.
A little further on the writer
speaks of enjoying life, but be
accountable to God for the way
we live.
Ecclesiastes 3:10-15: I have
seen the God-given task with
which the sons of men are to be
occupied.
He has made everything
beautiful in its time.
Also He has put eternity in
their hearts, except that no one
can find out the work that God
does from beginning to end.
I know that nothing is better
for them than to rejoice, and to
do good in their lives,
and also that every man
should eat and drink and enjoy
the good of all his labour, it is
the gift of God.
I know that whatever God
does, It shall be forever.
Nothing can be added to it,
And nothing taken from it.
God does it, that men should
fear before Him.
That which is has already
been, And what is to be has already
been, And God requires an
account of what is past.
We need to recognise that
there are seasons in our life. All
time is not equal.
Consider this concerning Jesus:
Galatians 4:4-5
But when the fullness of the
time had come, God sent forth
His Son, born of a woman, born
under the law, to redeem those
who were under the law, that we
might receive the adoption as
sons.
Are you a slave to time?
God gave His Son in His time
for you. Do you have any time
for Him?
The competition was
open to decorators from all
The standard of competition
FARMING
Affordable and sustainable water - key to
prosperous agricultural sector
The need for farmers
to have affordable and
sustainable water for
agricultural production
is once again shaping
up to be a major election
must.
For Queensland to
continue producing
world class food, fibre
and foliage it must
properly plan and allocate
water for agricultural
production, particularly
in a changing
climate.
Current challenges
include a lack of water
for growth in some of
the State’s most highly
productive agricultural
areas, planning
decisions and electricity
costs undermining
the viability of some
schemes, through to rising
groundwater.
Queensland Farmers’
Federation president
Stuart Armitage outlined
how critical the
issue of water availability,
accessibility and affordability
were for the
state’s farmers and the
regional communities
they support.
“Queensland farmers
are among the most efficient
and productive
users of water in the
world..
"Water is the lifeblood
for more than
5500 irrigated farm
businesses.
“Water creates opportunity
– for both
farmers and for the
businesses in the towns
that service our sector.
“Agriculture is responsible
for the management
and use of 60
per cent of the State’s
water. However, the
management, planning,
regulation, modelling,
quality, and critically,
pricing of agricultural
water is spread across
five departments and
ministerial portfolios.
“We need to get
access, pricing, governance
and administration
of agricultural
water right if we are to
take advantage of the
growing demand from
domestic and international
markets for high
quality agricultural
products,” Mr Armitage
said.
This election, QFF
is advocating for the
following sensible and
practical actions to
realise our vision for
a vibrant and thriving
agricultural sector
providing food, fibre
and amenity to all
Queenslanders:
• Commit to affordable
bulk water prices
for SunWater and SE-
QWater s schemes and
provision funding for
QFF to contract specialists
to ensure irrigated
agriculture can
meaningfully respond
to the pending pricing
investigations.
• Develop a regulatory
mechanism to facilitate
future access to
reserves in existing Water
Plans which have set
strategic water for future
planning projects.
• Facilitate temporary
water trading.
• Commit to greater
protection for irrigation
infrastructure.
• Commit to machinery
of government
change to align agricultural
water in the agriculture
portfolio.
cheese factory was built in
Ardie Koehler by the Maclagan
almost opposite the Lutheran
Church. In the early 1930s
local farmers bought the
1967, the same year that the
CROWS NEST LADIES: There was no winner
at last week's game due to a switched pairs
combination. This occurs when some players can
only play in the first session and some only in the
second session. This is also good news for any
new or experienced bowlers.
Our current format for Tuesday is two games
by 10 ends. So if you can make it by 12.15pm
and need to pick up children you can just play the
first session. Or if you work and finish early then
you can join us around 3pm. If you have never
played before you are also welcome and coaching
is freely provided.
There will be no bowls this Thursday, November
16, due to several members absent on this day.
