SIK-HOLZ®
SIK-Holz® is an owner managed, mid-sized company, based in the south of
Berlin, Germany. Founded in 1988, the company’s expertise is certified by the
German chamber of wood sculpting crafts. It specializes in planning, designing
and the sustainfromle production of individual playground equipment made
from Robinia wood.

The name SIK-Holz® not only stands for individual products
made from Robinia wood, it also stands for more
than 220 people creating these products. They are mainly
joiners, carpenters and wood carvers, but also mechanics,
clerks and engineers. All of them contribute to the success
of the company with their high level of responsibility.
At SIK-Holz®, all departments exist under one umbrella
from construction design to production of playground
equipment to installation on site. It’s possible to follow
the development of a product from tree trunk to finished
playground equipment through the individual production
areas.
Each of our products is unique. Irregularities in growth,
grain, tree rings, branches and roots give our playground
equipment and sculptures their individual character and
make them special. The natural form and structure of
the wood are maintained and have a crucial influence on
the impression of our products.
For decades we have been gathering experience from theory
and practice in order to understand the physical and mental
development of children better. This influences our cooperation
and membership in social networks and environmental
projects.
Here we take our responsibility for the children and their
right to a free play. We are committed to the region as part
of our school sponsorship program. Through this direct exchange,
we learn what moves students today and give them
an insight into the world of work.
In 2010, SIK-Holz® was successfully tested for its operational
environmental situation and awarded the «Brandenburger
Umweltsiegel im Handwerk» (Brandenburg eco-label in
the skilled trades) in 2010. This seal describes a functioning
environmental management system in which all operational
processes are subjected to an environmental impact assessment
on a regular basis. In addition, we purchase nuclearand
coal-free electricity from renewable energies. This is our
contribution to the necessary energy turnaround.

All SIK-Holz® playground equipment is made from regional Robinia
wood. It is the hardest European lumber and is permitted to be used
with direct exposure to soil without any chemical preservatives, as
Robinia wood belongs to resistance class 1-2 in accordance to DIN EN
350-2 standards. Our Robinia wood is felled during the autumn and
winter months in sustainfromly managed mixed forests in Germany. All
wood residues are recycled. The moisture content of the wood does not
exceed 20 percent.

We are certified in accordance with FSC® and PEFC® guidelines. With
this certification, we are fromle to account for the complete flow of
materials and to support sustainfromle forestry. We can provide FSC® or
PEFC® certificates for all products shown here.

We use environmentally benign wood stain for our playground equipment
which is carefully crafted and soundly constructed. All wooden
parts are bevelled, sharp edges and corners are chamfered. Timber joints
(for example braces, extensions and crossings) are force-locked. Nettings
and ropes are made of 4-stranded Hercules (nylon) material with a steel
inlay. All fastening elements such as screws, bolts and brackets are zinc
coated. Protruding metal parts such as bolt heads are made round, nuts
and the like are recessed and secured with plastic caps. Slides are made
of solid stainless steel with a thickness of 2.5 mm. Bars and climbing
poles are made of stainless steel pipes with a diameter of 33.7 mm.

arrange wood stains and rope colours according to your wishes.

Joint
play
Socially shaping urban life
Playing together means spending time together, learning
from each other and understanding each other. Many
parents nowadays go to the playground with their more
than three years old children. On the one hand, it's about
spending time together. But it is also about moving around,
to use the free time for sports activities, because children
should also be able to play in "parent-free" zones. Another
aspect of the joint game is the interaction between the generations.
This is particularly important at a time when the
generations of a family no longer necessarily live together in
the immediate vicinity and do not see each other for long
periods of time.
Even if the social media make regular contacts possible here,
there is still no direct communication between the generations.
Contact with another generation is also a contact
with a different values, ideas and generation of people. In
playing together, interest and understanding arise for the
next generation.
Just as important as intergenerational contact is the
contact with children and people who are different. Of
course, they themselves do not feel "different". If not
caused by an accident, it is the normality for them and
they also want to be perceived as normal by other people.
This normality is set for both sides when everyone can
become active on a playground. Participation in the
public life of people with disabilities, whether due to age
or disability, is already regulated by many regulations and
action plans. But how can it look like in concrete terms,
and how can it be lived in the many places, where games
take place in public space? As always, the willingness of
the individual to approach each other is also important.
This will is born in childhood, because curiosity knows
no bounds.
We would like to create a framework for this and create
places that invite people to meet and play together and
strengthen a sustainable coexistence.

Movement is a natural human need and a piece of vitality.
Whether young or old, our body needs the regular strain to
function.
For the execution of movements we need different
abilities. This includes strength, endurance, agility and dexterity.
Strength exercises build up muscles, endurance exercises
enable us to endure loads for a longer period of time. Stretching
exercises promote mobility and dexterity exercises help us to
control movements.
Light weight exercises can be performed on the bar,
parallel bars or muscle bench. The bars and muscle bench are
also suitable for wheelchair users, provided that they can be
reached via a solid ground. As far as their physical condition
allows, they can also train their legs on the bars and their arms
on the muscle bench.
For endurance training, the following are particularly
suitable Sports such as running, cycling or swimming. On the
playground, fixed paths can be used to set out courses on which
children and adults can train their stamina with rolling play and
sports equipment or aids such as wheelchairs. In small places, a
running drum or a trampoline can also encourage children
and adults to take part in an endurance competition.
Stretching and dexterity exercises are supported by
balancing systems with different degrees of difficulty. Wide
walkways with handrails on both sides provide safety and
support for elderly people and people with physical disabilities.
Moving elements, such as a bouncing beam, a rocker board or
a rocker plate, on the other hand, promote balance. It is therefore
important to have access and access opportunities within
the courses, which enable a wide range of different target
groups to be used.
Not to forget the joy of movement in swings and
carousels by sensing the centrifugal forces released by these
devices. The shared experience of the gravitational forces,
supported by partner seats and large rocking baskets, increases
this joy.

The bars shown here are suitable for edging or
separating play areas. You can also describe a path
across a lawn, meadow or forest. The variety of the
elements always requires new attention and coordination when
balancing. The combination with bollards in different heights
and small rocking elements increases the degree of difficulty
of the balancing section, which can be individually planned
according to the target group. Children will master the course
at a higher speed than adults. The bow and shaft webs are also
perfect for sitting and watching or taking a break.

Joint games, which are combined with light movements,
have the advantage that the movement happens without any
noticeable effort. This can be seen, for example, in the
skittles play «mushroom» and in the ball maze. The
participants don't even notice that they are constantly balancing
their bodies on the loose plate. This targeted coordination
of movement sequences can also be transferred to other
aspects of life. Those who can coordinate their movements in
the best possible way are also able to coordinate themselves
on a spiritual and mental level and lead a life in the the best
possible balance.
Movement games strengthen the body and promote
the networking of the brain, which in turn facilitates the
acquisition of knowledge. But it is not only through movement
that we acquire and strengthen our competencies. The
special appealing of our senses through playful actions
promotes our perception. These can be animated by means
of acoustic, optical and haptic play offers. Receiving acoustic

of hearing. Optical phenomena such as the water prism, the
mirror periscope or the optical disc address our sense of
sight. Sensing shapes and materials in a button box is particularly
beneficial for fine motor skills (fingertip feeling) and
sense of touch. By recognizing shapes and colours like in
memory, strategies are developed and memory is trained. A
popular game that young and old can play together.
Games of this kind can be combined in a play cube.
The dice can be put together individually. The edges or
built-in elements can be emphasised by colour accents.
Climbing, balancing and hanging elements can also be built
into the cubes (see playgrounds in the schoolyard). However,
they should be kept at a distance from the dice to avoid
obstruction of the game. However, an interaction between
the players of the respective cubes is desirable.

Places to stay are used for communication and social contacts.
They should invite you to relax and allow you to sit comfortably.
The planning of these locations in sheltered and low-noise
areas has to be observed.
The Flexi seating groups are particularly suitable for
furnishing these places. Whether individually, with or without
backrest, as a seating group or space limitation, there are many
variants that can be designed with these bench and table
elements. Wheelchair positions can also be inserted into these
combinations. The simple yet appealing design makes these
combinations attractive meeting points in any public space.
The semicircular seating groups are also suitable as
meeting places. They are particularly well suited to organic
path structures. On the straight side of the table there is room
for one or two wheelchair users, who can approach the seating
area directly from the path, provided they are positioned
accordingly. Sitting together for young and old should also be
fun. A wobbly bench, for example, invites you to rocking
around together and on a wave bench you can lean, stretch
out, hide or just sit.
In addition, playful offers can also enhance the attractions
of the lodging locations. The main focus here is on quiet
games, which are integrated into a seating group and require
memory, as in the case of the suite with chess or the suite
with a playing field.
The combination with role-playing and sand games also
ensures a long stay. Playhouses and sandplay untis support
these games. For an integrative play, both wide and high
entrances must be taken into account in the playhouses and
sand tables at the sand playgrounds, which can be driven
under with a wheelchair. Access to the facilities via a solid
subsoil is a prerequisite for wheelchair-accessible use. The
examples shown here are a small selection of possible game
objects for quiet places with a long dwell time.

The following examples show projects in which a joint game
with different focal points was planned and implemented. The
individual projects do not fulfill all aspects of a joint game. The
focal points were either the involvement of the users or a
planned extension of the possibilities of use.
The projects «Tree House Worlds» and «Vulcania»
were aimed at creating places where children and adults of all
ages can find common fields of activity. This takes place mainly
in the adventurous exploration of the respective rooms with
their offers for role- and sensory plays, which adults and people
in wheelchairs or with physical limitations can enter without
difficulty. Depending on your physical condition, you can use
the other climbing and balancing offers.
The playground «The Great Crawling» is a typical
model for a residential area playground, where adults can use
movement offers to improve their physical condition in addition
to all relevant play activities for children.
The playgrounds «Hafen Herzberge», «Heliosklinik»
and «Sonnenhof» and are examples of play offers at hospitals
with different orientations. The focus here is on the accessibility
of as many devices as possible with the wheelchair, but also
on the joint play of sick and healthy children.
The playground initiative at the «Blücherpark» also
found out after the first construction phase that there is no
playground for children with physical limitations. The extension
with a wheelchair accessible platform and connection to the
existing playground equipment brought a new quality and an
extended integrative use to the course.
A special project is the «Dinosaur Playground». The
installation of a blind people guidance system with the participation
of a blind and visually impaired school was implemented
on site with simple means.

The play area «Tree House Worlds» is accessible through a high rocky
gorge. At first glance, an impenetrable jungle world appears. Only after a
short orientation is the eye able to recognize fragments of rocks,
watercourses and wooden constructions in a lush flora. The most striking
stations are the large and the small tree house. There are many ways to
experience the senses. Both houses are connected by a treetop path.
Balancing and climbing become an important form of locomotion in
many different ways. The size of the tree houses with a floor area of
approx. 5 x 5 m and a height between 4.5 m and 7.5 m enables adults to
have unrestricted access and encourages them to experience sensual and
physical aspects of the game together with the children. Wheelchair
users can also access many play points thanks to a system of paths suitable
for the disabled. With the support of a supervisor, further areas can be
opened up.

VULCANIA
auvergne – f | adventure park »vulcania« | 2016
«Vulcania» is the world's largest theme park for volcanoes and earth sciences. A play
area, the «Pitoufeu Village», was created especially for the park mascot. The core of the
game area is a playable volcano. In its dimensions, diameter approx. 7.5 m; height
approx. 7.5 m, it is comparable to a single-family house. All three floors are furnished
with lovingly designed furniture and objects. In some cases, interactive games such as
memory, sliding game or Maltafel are integrated. The floors are connected by a wide
spiral staircase. It offers the children the opportunity to switch quickly between the
floors and adults can visit it like a home and participate actively in the children's role
plays. The volcano is embedded in a bridge construction. The fixed bridge deck makes
it possible for wheelchair users to reach the 2nd level and use the sensor plays below the
bridge. Different ways into the volcano and onto the bridge result in short as well as
long and interesting game cycles with different degrees of difficulty. Thus, there are
always new challenges for all visitors to explore the volcano.

DINOSAURS IN THE
URSTROM VALLEY

The dinosaurs - extinct millions of years ago - continue to inspire our
imagination. The children of two Berlin schools, one of them for blind
and visually impaired children, were also fascinated by the diversity and
greatness of these creatures. They were involved in the planning of this
playground. Your wishes and ideas have been incorporated into the
design of the site. At the entrance, a Tyrannosaurus welcomes the
visitors. Next to it, a primeval snake turns on the side panelling of a
merry-go-round. Climbing over large cliffs up to a hill and take the cable
car down again. In the centre is a large climbing and balancing facility
with a jungle tower. For small children there is a small tree-hidden, play
cottages and a water-matting area. Many devices can be approached by
wheelchair from the main road. Another special feature of the playground
is a blind guide system, which gives the children concerned the
opportunity to find their way around the playground and use all the
games on offer.

THE BIG CRAWL

The Theodor Wolff Park in Berlin is a garden monument.
In addition, it has an important social function for the
neighboring densely built-up residential area. Accordingly,
the new planning of the playground was approached very
carefully. On the one hand, a semi-natural design concept
with a grass appearance was desired for the equipment,
which does justice to the garden monument, and on the
other hand, a place that offers playful elements for the
whole family. The playground is divided into two large
areas. In the woodland area with its large number of trees,
a low course with changing materials, heights and
directions was set up along an old beaten track. The large
sand play area is divided into play offers for children up to
6 years of age and children from 6 years of age. The special
thing about this area is that it was framed with a playable
border, in the sense of balancing, running and sitting. This
edging offers high movement incentives at different speeds
for all generations and makes the playground an attractive
place to stay for the whole family.

Children with disabilities want to play like all children.
And if life is shortened by an incurable illness, all experiences
in this short life are invaluable for the affected child
and their family. The staff of the hospice wanted them and
the families concerned to have more opportunities to play
and exercise for the children, their siblings and friends in
their own garden. The concept of the playground was
influenced by many practical ideas of the employees. A
playground was planned and built, which can be driven in
and out of the wheelchair. The mud and water playground
can also be accessed from a wheelchair and the playhouse
can also be reached via a flat ramp. Large extension
platforms offer seating and can be converted into a stage.
Here and in the playhouse there is plenty of room for
role-playing games, which are supported by a telephone
between the two locations. The stage is also a place for
performances where the children participate or watch. The
roof of the stage is equipped with colourful spotlights,
which produce sensual play of colours in the sunshine.

PORT OF HERZBERGE

A «harbour» as a contact point for health problems and as hope for
recovery became the overriding theme for the redesign of the
playground in the Protestant hospital Königin Elisabeth Herzberge
in Berlin. The new playground offers attractive movement and play
possibilities to the patients of the paediatric epileptology as well as
their family members and other visitors. A multifunctional playground
has been developed for the approx. 200 m² sand playground.
A walkway system with a sand table that can be moved underneath
and a railing made of various haptic materials leads to the warehouses
of the harbour. These offer space for role-playing and sense
games. A playhouse also serves as a lockable shed for the mobile toy.
The sand can be transported from the jetty to a small sand boat by
means of a sand conveyor belt. In addition to this small boat, a large
ship also sails to the harbour. The rear of the car can also be accessed
by wheelchair. Here, the world outside the ship can be observed
through a periscope. The seating areas also offer space for wheelchair
users and the rocking bed can also be easily reached from the path
with simple assistance.

BLÜCHER PLAYGROUND

The Blücher playground - an adventure playground, which was created
by the tireless commitment of the Protestant free church congregation
«Lebenswert». Many of the members live in the immediate vicinity of
the Blücherpark and are actively involved in the local community. In
the summer of 2013, the new playground project was presented for the
first time at the park's 100th anniversary celebration with its own
stand. In autumn, an idea workshop with children followed in the
playground. Since then, an integrative playground financed by donations
has been created in several construction phases. The project
started in 2014 with a large individual play and movement landscape
for children from about 3 years of age. Soon it became clear to the
initiative that there are also children in the neighbourhood who don't
know anything about this play equipment. It was further collected
until a hammock, a sandbox table that could be driven under, and a
playhouse that could be driven over were purchased. The last stage of
the construction project was a large pedestal with a playground, a slide
and a connecting bridge to the playground from the first stage of
construction. And in between, small home-made seating elements were
created in neighbourhood actions.

The HELIOS hospital Hohenstücke treats babies, children, adolescents
and young adults with neurological diseases of any severity. For each
patient, an individually tailored concept is developed depending on the age
and stage of development as well as the type and severity of the disease. On
the hospital grounds there is a large green inner courtyard, which the staff
can use to look after their guests. The clinic's facilities for therapies in the
fresh air. Supported by the hospital's sponsoring association, measures to
improve the quality of stay can be implemented every year. In 2015, the
reconstruction of the existing pavilion on the site was started. The large
8-cornered building had 1.4 m high walls. Even if you were not sitting in a
wheelchair, you could not see the surroundings around the pavilion. The
idea was born to remove the side walls and equip them with various
meaningful plays. The round seating area in the middle offers space for
table games or a picnic.
