Really, we do! Village Eye team
member, Zahra Willis is on a mission
to collect cotton underwear for
girls at a North India orphanage,
Ramana's Garden.
The orphanage, which is also a
school, a home and a community
centre offers a loving, safe,
welcoming environment for children
rescued from dire situations.
Despite the love and warmth
offered at Ramana's Garden,
Zahra's friend, Cathy Richardson,
was taken aback when she saw the
poverty and plight of the children
there first hand. Cathy was inspired
to do something to help and is
now on a mission to collect cotton
underwear for these girls and Zahra
has offered to be a local agent.
Although hard for us to understand,
We want
your
knickers!
cotton knickers are not common in
the poor areas of Northern India
and to wear them not only signifies
a cared-for child – as opposed
to a disposable commodity to an
adult intent on harm - but they also
protect from infection if a child is
sitting on a dirty street.
The underwear is going to be
personally delivered to the
orphanage next year, so if you can
join us in donating some (new)
cotton knickers for girls aged 7 –
15, you can rest assured that they
will be going to great use. You can
bring them to the Village Eye office
at Butlers Lands Farm, Mortimer
during October. Thank you! If you
would like to find out more about
Zahra’s mission to help Ramana’s
Garden, please email her directly
Local Officer is
Plodng !
We know that the Armed
Response Vehicle team at
Three Mile Cross Police
Station is filled with heroes,
but word has reached us about one in
particular. PC Tyrone Powell is planning
to walk from Land’s End in Cornwall
to John O’Groats, Scotland - while he’s
off duty on annual leave, of course - to
support a national mental health charity.
PC Powell will be raising money by walking
around 25 to 30 miles each day, covering
approximately 1000 miles of the UK! Wow.
The plan is for the challenge to take between
35 and 40 days.
This epic walk is due to take place next year on
27 April 2018. PC Powell will be taking the trip
completely alone, completely unsupported,
with only the contents of his rucksack and will
sleep in a tent each night.
This challenge is in aid of the charity Mind
which runs a Blue Light Programme. The
Blue Light Programme provides resources,
advice and support for members of all of
the emergency services and their families.
They also provide peer-to-peer support to
colleagues in need by training Blue Light
champions in the various emergency services.
PC Powell told us, “Mental ill-health is
something that can affect anybody at any
time; especially within the emergency
services, where we can be exposed to
horrendous experiences which can stay locked
up within the confines of our minds and seldom
shared or spoken about with others.
“By undertaking this walk, I’m hoping to help to
tackle the stigma around mental health issues
and promote the service that Mind offers to
our extended emergency service family, as
well as the service they provide to the public.”
I’m sure you’ll join us in wishing PC Powell
the very best of luck and if you would like to
support Tyrone’s fund raising, please visit:
Happy 100th Birthday to the Lions
This year, Lions Clubs International is celebrating its 100th year of Service and is the
world’s largest and premier International Voluntary Service Organisation. Our local
Lions Club, Loddon Valley Lions Club, currently has 37 members drawn from all walks
of life. Their work in the community has been continuing in abundance across 2017
and last month was no different. September saw the Loddon Valley Lion Club’s 23rd
annual Charity Golf Tournament take place at Bishopswood Golf Course. Eighteen
pairs competed and the event raised £1500. The beneficiary of this amount was St.
Michaels Hospice in Basingstoke who provide the highest quality palliative care. Lion
President Peter Haggith presented the cheque to the Hospice representative who
gave a very informative talk on the running of the organisation.
Teenage Imperfections
Local teenager, Paige
Heath has taken her first
steps to a musical career
by launching her debut
album. Having started
singing at the age of six,
the Hurst Community
College student, who
is now 15, has already
played Basingstoke Live,
The Tadley Tea Party and
Basingstoke Beer Festival.
More importantly, she
went down a storm at
Basingstoke Live and
earned herself a new army
of new fans.
Impressively, Paige writes
her own material and
says that song writing
comes quite easily to
her. She has been writing
songs since she was
just eight years old and
has composed a large
back catalogue of music.
Recording an album was
initially Paige’s mum’s
idea. She suggested it to
Paige, knowing how much
music she had created
over the years. Paige’s
singing teacher and friend,
Simon Driscoll, also
played a key role and gave
his support and guidance
to getting her material
recorded. So Paige took
the leap and has now
released her debut album,
Imperfections.
Paige accompanies
herself on her ukulele,
an instrument which she
learned at school. She
was inspired by
a YouTuber she
discovered called
Doddie who also
plays Ukulele and
sings. The ukulele is
enjoying a massive
surge in popularity
in the UK and Paige
has found that the
sound of the Ukulele
matches - even
enhances - her songwriting
style.
You can purchase
Imperfections by
visiting Paige’s
Facebook page
Coffee, Cards & Gifts
Scarecrow Trailers need not
worry about getting weary
this year, as one of the popular
stops on the route is likely to
be The Baobab, the delightful
coffee shop and gift shop on
West End Road in Mortimer
which is celebrating its first
birthday this month.
Having finally thrown off its shackles as ‘The Old Post Office’
this gem of a shop has truly come into its own over the last year.
The personal welcome and service is second-to-none and often
commented upon. There is wide range of quality stock - gifts,
cards and stationery - for all ages and occasions, too.
The unusual gifts here give the impression to the recipient that
you have spent hours searching high and low for ‘just the right’
gift, which is how everybody wants to feel! The introduction of
the coffee shop has been embraced by villagers and visitors
alike, welcoming the opportunity to sit and chat in a cosy
environment with drinks and, of course,
cake!
For those in a hurry (or mid-Scarecrow
Trail) The Baobab also offers a take-away
option, so why not take a tea, coffee or hot
chocolate on the trail with you? And when
you pop in during half term week, you might
just find a lollipop for the kids, too...
CombinationOily Skin
If your skin, like mine, can be very temperamental, one minute it’s soft and supple, the next it’s dry yet
strangely oily, then look no further than the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel. This absolute
beauty of a moisturiser is yellow in colour which glides onto the skin perfectly, I can really feel it hydrating
and moisturising my face. What’s even better is that it acts as an amazing base for applying makeup, making
foundation blend into the skin beautifully. I am totally in love with this moisturiser
and I think it is perfect for oily and combination skin in the cold winter months,
ensuring that your skin does not become dry whilst minimising the oiliness found
in the t-zone area of the face. For £17.50 it is on the pricey side… but the gel-like
consistency of the product means a little goes a long way, and it seriously does, my
bottle has lasted me 7 months!
Hydrating
Beauty
Hydration is absolutely key throughout the
autumn and winter months (I know, where
did the summer go?) and this applies to
all skin types, oily, dry, sensitive, ageing
and young. For the past few years I have
tried and tested various moisturisers, both
high end and high street to try and fi nd the
perfect one which would make my dry and
dull weather worn skin become fresh and
awake….so not much to ask eh?
Only recently have I discovered the wonders and benefits of using an eye cream daily and a little
really does go a long way! One of my favourites is The Miracle Worker by Philosophy, which
is tinted and quite thick, making it a good base for applying make up underneath the eyes.
Personally, I feel that this can be used on any skin type, not just ageing, and I can’t comment on
it reducing wrinkles! However, it definitely covers the dark circles and I do feel like my make
up looks more radiant when applied over this eye cream. If you are looking to invest in an eye
cream that will reduce the signs of ageing as well as making you look more glowing and radiant,
then definitely look no further than this!
Megan’s
Moments
Normal
Skin
If you are a lover of a
spa-like feel from your
skincare products, then
look no further than
the photo. If there is
any brand of skin care
products that never
cease to amaze me, it’s
Liz Earle, all of their
products are absolutely
worth the price tag. The
moisturiser smells so
pure and natural and
blends so nicely into the
skin, afterwards you’re
left feeling refreshed
and awake – just like
you’ve visited the spa!
If there are any products
I can recommend for
getting rid of blemishes
and acne and that
would give your skin a
well needed revitalised
boost no matter what
age, it is Liz Earle.
Just one week after
purchasing their Hot
Cloth Cleanser my skin
was completely clear –
and that never happens!
As if you don’t already
need more tempting,
the moisturiser is
packed with natural
ingredients such as
borage and avocado
oil, beta-carotene and
vitamin E. Again, the
price tag is a little hefty
at £19.50, but a little
does go a long way,
and trust me, it will be
one of the best skincare
purchases you make!
Any products with a * have
been sent to me but my
opinions are my own.
Ageing and Dry Skin
If you are looking for a moisturiser that will transform your ageing complexion into a
youthful and more radiant one then look no further than the Dr Organic Intensive Daily
Treatment Day Cream*. This moisturiser is extremely nourishing and rich, which I found
unusual for a daily treatment. However, I tested this moisturiser on a few people other
than myself and found that it works absolute wonders not just on ageing skin but for very
dry skin too. If I had a day where my skin felt tight and dry, just popping some of this
moisturiser onto my face instantly gave my skin a wake up call, which is why I think it is
perfect for applying during the winter months when your skin really needs a boost! Even
on my young skin, this moisturiser left my skin feeling firmer and more awake, definitely
something I wasn’t expecting! Also, for the price of just £8.19 I am seriously impressed
with the glass packaging, making it look far more expensive than it really is.
Giggle
The Gd Wife’s Guide
Oh golly gosh and gdness, how times have changed!
Recently
one of our
most loyal
and long-standing
contributors and supporters
decided to tie the knot. With
the news of the impending
nuptials, the team here at
Eye HQ started thinking
about what to get the couple
as a
wedding gif t...
We stumbled upon this gem
of a read from a 1955 issue
of Housekeeping Monthly.
Offering all sorts of tips and
advice for new brides, its
content was far t amusing
not to share. Millenial wives,
brace yourselves, we’re
off to don our pinnies and
pouffe our hair!
1. Have dinner ready: Plan
ahead, even the night
before, to have a delicious
meal — on time. This
is a way of letting him
know that you have been
thinking about him, and are
concerned about his needs.
Most men are hungry when
they come home and the
prospects of a gd meal are
part of the warm welcome
needed.
2. Prepare yourself: Take
15 minutes to rest so you
will be refreshed when
he arrives. Touch up your
makeup, put a ribbon in
your hair and be fresh
lking. He has just been
with a lot of work-weary
people. Be a little gay and a
little more interesting. His
boring day may need a lif t.
3. Clear away the clutter.
Make one last trip through
the main part of the house
just before your husband
arrives, gathering up schl
bks, toys, paper, etc. Then
run a dust cloth over the
tables. Your husband will
feel he has reached a haven
of rest and order, and it will
give you a lif t, t.
4. Prepare the children:
Take a few minutes to wash
the children's hands and
faces if they are small.
Comb their hair, and if
necessary, change their
clothes. They are little
treasures and he would
like to see them playing the
part.
5. Minimize the noise: At the
time of his arrival, eliminate
all noise of washer, dryer,
dishwasher or vacuum. Try
to encourage the children
to be quiet. Be happy to
see him. Greet him with a
warm smile and be glad to
see him.
6. Don't greet him with
problems or complaints.
Don't complain if he's late
for dinner. Count this as
minor compared with what
he might have gone through
that day.
7. Make him comfortable:
Have him lean back in
a comfortable chair or
suggest he lie down in the
bedrm. Have a cl or
warm drink ready for him.
Arrange his pillow and offer
to take off his shoes. Speak
in a low, sof t, sthing and
pleasant voice. Allow him to
relax and unwind.
8. Listen to him: You may
have a dozen things to tell
him, but the moment of his
arrival is not the time. Let
him talk first.
9. Make the evening his:
Never complain if he does
not take you out to dinner
or to other places of
entertainment; instead, try
to understand his world of
strain and pressure, his
need to be home and relax.
10. The goal: Try to make
your home a place of peace
and order where your
husband can relax.
FAST CARS &
FINE DINING!
Fast cars and fine dining met once again when L’Ortolan hosted its
Annual Supercar Gourmet Event last month. Thirty guests and car
enthusiasts were given the opportunity to test drive an array of
incredible cars including Teslas, Porsches, Bentleys, Jaguars, BMWs,
Range Rovers and Audis.
The drivers (who must be aged 25 and over) sampled champagne
and canapes before enjoying chef Tom Clarke’s incredible Michelin
starred three course lunch. If you are a supercar owner - or
potential owner - who would enjoy test driving one of these cars,
not to mention meeting like-minded individuals in a
unique and enjoyable event, then register your interest
for next year’s Super Car Day by emailing
ellie.nicholls@lortolan.com
We are used to slapping on the
moisturiser to keep our skin soft
and supple... But imagine being
able to moisturise your skin from
the inside out - that is precicely
what this product claims to do.
But did it work?
Does it
What with trips to Devon, France, and
Wales, combined with lots of snorkeling,
walking, paddle boarding and any other
physical activity my kids challenged me to,
combined with plenty of sun, wind and rain,
by the end of the school summer holidays
frankly my skin had taken a battering! I
was in need of help, so off I went to Aspire
Clinic for a little me time and some serious
rejuvenation.
The treatment I was prescribed was the
brand new Juvéderm Volite, a skin booster
designed specifically to improve skin
quality on the face, neck, décolletage and
hands.
In just one treatment, lasting up to nine
months, Volite rehydrates the skin,
improves skin smoothness and elasticity,
and gives your skin a long-lasting, healthylooking
glow. Just the pick-me-up my skin
needed.
Lying on the treatment bed in the
comfortable surroundings of Aspire Clinic
at the Madejski Stadium (I caught a glimpse
of the newly-laid Reading pitch on my way
up), Laura, my lovely nurse applied a local
anesthetic cream to numb my entire face
and neck. Then, using a white wax pencil,
she created a grid pattern to define the
treatment area, before giving me a series of
microinjections…and I didn’t feel a thing!
So what was actually being injected into my
skin? Volite is composed of hyaluronic acid
(HA), which is found naturally in the body
and skin. In fact, 75% of skin is HA, and
each HA molecule holds 500 times its own
weight in moisture, thereby hydrating skin
and smoothing wrinkles. The body’s natural
ability to regenerate HA slowly decreases
with age, so the Volite treatment boosts the
amount of HA in our skin leaving it smooth,
glowing and rejuvenated.
Jenny, Aspire’s Clinic
Director was explaining
that expensive creams
containing HA don’t work
because the skin is designed
to be a protective barrier
against outside elements
and bacteria. Penetration
of the skin’s surface is
therefore limited and
the absorption of topical
Diary of an
aesthetic
6 months,
6 treatments
creams is minimalised. By injecting HA
directly into the skin, the Volite treatment
optimises skin quality with instant results.
There was no downtime with this treatment;
just a couple of micro-needle marks which
had faded by the next day. As promised,
over the next few days the treatment
results continued to improve hydration
and my skin felt and looked refreshed,
leaving me feeling rather fabulous. I’m now
back on the school run and have had lots
of comments about my healthy, glowing
and well-rested skin. And the good news is
the treatment is long-lasting so only needs
doing once a year, which suits my busy
lifestyle!
Here at the Village Eye
we thought we’d help
readers find out more
about Aspire and why
you should choose them. So we
caught up with Clinic Director,
Jenny O’Neill for a quick fire
Q&A:
Firstly Jenny, congratulations on
making the final of the Aesthetics
Awards. So, what is it that sets
Aspire out from the rest? “We
love what we do and we really
care about getting things right
for the client. So, we offer a free
consultation where we take time
to discuss all the options available
and patients are given plenty of
time to chat through all aspects of
their treatment plan.”
What’s one of your most popular
treatments? “We are Berkshire’s
most experienced and affordable
provider of a fat freezing
treatment called CoolSculpting.
CoolSculpting is the only FDA
cleared medical device for
permanent fat removal and it’s
giving fantastic results. With over
4 million treatments performed
worldwide, not only is it safe, but
also, it’s been scientifically proven
to permanently reduce fat cells by
25% at each treatment session.”
CoolSculpting has become popular
amongst beauty and fitness-focussed
celebrities such as Khloe and Kim
Kardashian. Other celebrities known
to use CoolSculpting include the
Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner
and Will and Grace’s Debra Messing,
who has become CoolSculpting’s
brand ambassador.
What other treatments do you offer?
“Wrinkle smoothing, Dermal fillers,
Skin tightening, Skin rejuvenation,
Medical microdermabrasion,
Light therapy for skin disorders,
Non-surgical face lift, Thread vein
removal, Skin tag, mole and wart
Who are your typical customers?
“Our customers are from every
walk of life; any age group and any
gender. In today’s world if there is
something about our face, skin or
body that we don’t like or want to
improve on, it’s likely that there is a
solution available.
What is your philosophy? “I worked
in a large practise in Harley Street for
many years, where I developed my
passion for this business. I wanted
to provide a local, more personal
service, where patient satisfaction is
paramount.”
Do You
Sleeplike a
baby?
A good night’s sleep is of utmost importance, and your body
needs time to rest and restore its systems. But, many people
have an irregular sleeping pattern, and insomnia is a leading
cause for the development of many ailments.
12
Issue 62 October D 2017(Paul).indd 12 19/09/2017 17:30
According to the National
Sleep Foundation, the
recommended number of
sleeping hours depends
on the age factor. The
quality of your sleep
determines the energy you
have throughout the day,
and affects your health
condition.
How much is enough?
It is common sense that our bodies
need to unwind and rest each night
and that insufficient sleep can
leads to severe health problems, so
trying to get enough rest throughout
the night is paramount. Recently,
Charles Czeisler, a professor at
Harvard University, gathered a team
of experts, to research. They went
through numerous studies conducted
in the period between 2004 and
2014. The goal of their research was
determining the proper number of
sleeping hours for every age group.
They also studied the effects of
sleeping on overall health.
What stops us?
If you are having trouble nodding
off when the lights go out, it could
be down to a number of factors.
Stress and modern technology are
the most common. Stress stimulates
the secretion of cortisol. Excessive
secretion of the stress hormone
causes sleep disorder, sickness, and
discomfort.
The light released by
technological devices blocks
the production of melatonin.
To help combat this, most
modern smartphones
have a nightime mode
which turns the screen
to a yellowish tinge - but
experts recommend that we ditch the
tv and tech at least an hour before
retiring. If you are, like many of us so
often are these day - scrolling your
messages or faffing on Facebook
late in the evening, now might be time
to get back into old fashioned habits
and read a good paperback?
Our challenge to you is to try this
for one week and see if your sleep
improves.
Unhealthy sleeping patterns often
lead to fatigue, and make you unable
to make decisions, concentrate, think
clearly and even eat. Scientists have
now confirmed the link between
sleep disorders and health problems.
If you sleep less than five hours
a night, your heart will suffer a
lot. Sleeping less than 7 hours
creates perfect conditions for
the development of severe health
problems like uncontrolled weight
gain and diabetes. Try to sleep well,
and your body will thank you.
So, how can
you achieve
sleep nirvana?
Apparently,
it’s all about
keeping in
sync with
your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.
Getting in sync with your body’s
natural sleep-wake cycle, or circadian
rhythm, is one of the most important
strategies for sleeping better. If you
keep a regular sleep-wake schedule
you’ll feel much more refreshed and
energized than if you sleep the same
number of hours at different times,
even if you only alter your sleep
schedule by an hour or two.
Experts also advise that we should
try to go to sleep and get up at the
same time every day. This helps set
our body’s internal clock and optimize
the quality of the sleep we get..
Choose a bed time when you normally
feel tired, so that you don’t toss and
turn. If you’re getting enough sleep,
you should wake up naturally without
an alarm. If you
need an alarm
clock, you may
need an earlier
bedtime.
Avoid sleeping in—
even on weekends.
The more your
weekend/weekday
sleep schedules
differ, the worse the
jetlag-like symptoms
you’ll experience. If you need to
make up for a late night, opt for a
daytime nap rather than sleeping in.
This allows you to pay off your sleep
debt without disturbing your natural
sleep-wake rhythm.
Be smart about napping. While
napping is a good way to make up for
lost sleep, if you have trouble falling
asleep or staying asleep at night,
napping can make things worse. Limit
naps to 15 to 20 minutes in the early
afternoon. Apparently - 18 minutes
is the optimum we need for a pownap
reset - who knew!
Fighting after-dinner drowsiness.
If you get sleepy way before your
bedtime - we’ve all done it... midway
through the evening and we find
ourseves dozing in front of the TV...
Even if you don’t feel like it, get off
the couch and do something mildly
stimulating, such as washing the
dishes, calling a friend, or getting
clothes ready for the next day. If you
give in to the drowsiness, you may
wake up later in the night and have
trouble getting back to sleep.
Here’s what is needed and what is not
throughout our lives.
Newborn (0-3 months) -- 14-17 hours.
Babies (4-11 months) -- 12-15 hours.
I was summoned to the
chuffed to say I managed
to complete it just before
the heavens opened for
the gazillionth time too -
so it’ll be ready to use in
the spring. Now that the
autumn is upon us, I’ll no
jobs to finish around the
house. But, as I’ve said to
her before - “There’s no
need to remind me every
six months or so - I’m on
it already”.. Truth is, I’m
actually holding out for a
while as I’ve seen some very
handy gadgets which I am
sure will help me get these
jobs done a little bit sooner.
It’s pretty amazing how long it takes to cut a square
hole. Find the pencil, grab the square, mark the wall and
begin the cut. That’s probably 3-5 minutes per square,
depending on how much skill you have. What if you
could just press a square to the wall and begin cutting?
That’s essentially how the new Quadsaw works. This
bad boy has 4 different saws that make up a square.
They cut simultaneously providing you with a nice clean
square. It’s a brand new product from a UK company
(hurrah) and the chaps behind it are now taking preorders
at £199 (Hopefully with shipping before the
end of the year), though this is yet to be confirmed...
Definitely worth visiting their website and registering
your interest if nothing else! www.quadsaw.com
In the recent case of
Hertfordshire County
Council –v- Davies [2017]
EWHC 1488 (QB) a court
has considered, and given
useful guidance, on the issue
of accommodation tied to
contracts of employment.
The Defendant in the case (Mr
Davies) moved into a school
bungalow owned by the local
authority when he became a
school caretaker in January
2003.
He was later dismissed in June
2015 for gross misconduct but
did not vacate the property
following his dismissal.
The question for the court was
whether or not the Defendant
was entitled to remain in
possession.
By the time of the hearing, the
local authority no longer ran the
school and did not require the
school bungalow for another
caretaker, but the court held
that the Council were entitled to
possession of the property when
the Defendant’s employment
ended.
The court found that the
agreement between the
parties amounted to a “service
occupancy” agreement tied to
the Defendant’s employment.
The Defendant was therefore
required to vacate the property.
The case highlights the need
to understand the distinction
between a service occupancy
and a service tenancy. The
former will provide an employee
with the right to occupy the
property during the term of
their employment, and will
automatically end without
notice upon termination of their
employment. The latter will be
regulated by the Housing Act
1988 and rights of occupier
will depend on type of tenancy
in place. It is a far less certain
place to be.
Where an employer has given
an employee a right to reside in
accommodation tied specifically
to their employment, they should
be mindful of the interesting
issues raised in this case. They
should be careful to ensure
that any agreement is clear in
specifying that an employee is
occupying as a licensee under a
service occupancy agreement
rather than as a tenant under a
service tenancy.
Premises under service
occupancy are deemed to
be vicariously occupied by
an employer, meaning that
the employee does not have
any interest or estate in the
premises in comparison to
service tenancies, and an
employee would therefore have
no rights to remain in property
after termination.
Student Finance...
The Bank of Mum & Dad
Now that the summer
is over and the kids
go back to school or
university, life returns
to ‘normal’. Time to
return to that list of
‘to-do’s’ (maybe sorting
your finances out!)
Our son starts his second
year of university soon and
once again his finances and
student loan are discussed.
This year the student loan
interest rate goes up to
6.1% (3% above the March
17 RPI rate of 3.1%). This is
considerably higher than our
mortgage rate and indeed
even a bank personal loan
rate.
Once interest free, student
loans have gradually notched
up and being pegged to
inflation could give some eye
watering interest rates if RPI
increases again.
Some friends of ours
discussed adding their
son’s student loan to their
mortgage - something we had
considered as, on the face
of it, it would save money. It
would however mean that
our mortgage would now
run on in to our retirement
and with number 2 child due
to go to university soon,
we could easily ramp up an
additional mortgage debt of
over £100,000. The matter of
how we would get our children
to repay this and over what
time conjures up all manner
of scenarios, many of which I
don’t like the sound of!
Many financial commentators
have concluded that, despite
the high interest rate, student
loans are the best way
forward as in a reasonable
proportion of cases the loans
are never fully repaid before
the 30 year date when they
are wiped out. In effect, this
would make the loan cheaper.
Some comment that the
loan repayments (which are
deducted from the student’s
salary when they earn over
£21,000 p.a.) are a form of
tax. A tax for the privilege of
going to university perhaps?
Maybe this should focus the
mind on whether going to
university makes economic
sense. Going to university
for the experience is all well
and good if it helps with
a vocation that wouldn’t
otherwise be possible
through apprenticeships or
other avenues.
For those who have yet to
experience the conundrum
of financing student loans,
maybe some prior financial
planning would assist in
softening the burden.
Jack worboys Drives...
Jaguar has been crawling back
from a reputation of not very
nice cars with poor reliability and
build quality for years and this
has accelerated in recent years. The
XF, a 5-Series rival got the ball rolling,
alongside the XK. Jaguar received a big
boost in popularity when they brought
out the F-Type, but now with the XE, a
3-Series rival, it is even more important
that this car is well received. It is the XE
that will have the biggest effect on the
bottom line of the business.
The XE is the first Jaguar to use the
Jaguar Land Rover modular platform
which will underpin most Jaguars
and Land Rovers. The body is mostly
Aluminium with steel used to add
strength and improve the weight
distribution.
Jaguar is known for making some very
good looking cars. The XE is still a very
good looking car, however, it is much
more toned down when compared to
cars like the F-Type. This is to allow this
‘breadwinner’ car to appeal to a wider
audience and (they hope) sell in much
bigger numbers. Inside the styling is
very Jaguar with much of the hardware
being borrowed from higher models. It
is a refreshingly minimalist interior that
looks premium without trying too hard.
The infotainment system and buttons
are intuitive to use and well laid out.
The engines in the XE consist of mostly
2.0L four cylinder petrols and diesels
at various power levels. These levels
vary from about 160 to 300
horsepower. There is also a
3.0L V6 petrol available
in the S model with 380
horsepower. The various
engines are available with
rear wheel drive or all
wheel drive, generally with
an automatic gearbox,
but there is also a manual
option available with the lower powered
diesels. The power is more than enough
to keep up with modern traffic and the
efficiency ranges from 75mpg in the
least powerful diesel to around 35mpg
in the V6 petrol.
The XE is great on the road. The car is
very refined with a comfortable ride
and a quiet, smooth drivetrain. The
controls all have a great weight and
feel and the driving experience is very
enjoyable. It is very unlikely you will find
a car in this class that you enjoy driving
more than the XE. Space is rarely vast
in this sector, and the XE is no different.
It is slightly tighter than some of the
competition in the back and in the boot,
but only by a tiny amount.
The XE starts at £28,295 and the top
models with a 2.0L engine are priced at
around £38,000. The S model is priced
from £48,045. For
business users, the lower power engine
emits less than 100g/km of CO2 which
is a great thing.
The XE is a great car, building on
the Jaguar image, but making sure it
appeals to as many people as possible.
It drives so well and competes at the
same level as the other options from
the various German companies. As to
whether you should buy one over them
is whether the Jaguar appeals to you
more than a BMW, Audi or Mercedes.
These are all very good cars with great
styling, performance, quality and
technology and most people would
be very happy with any of them. If you
are looking for something that (at the
moment) is a little rarer, or you like
the idea of owning a Jaguar then this is
definitely worth getting and you will not
be disappointed.
Half Term
Scarecrow Fun
The Mortimer Scarecrow Trail is now a firm fixture
on the calendar and every year, the groups of
families walking, cycling and scooting around the
village during half term increases! The trail will
be running across the half term holidays from 9am
on Saturday 21st October - 4pm on Sunday 29th
October. Each scarecrow has been created by
local families, schools and Screcrow
businesses and will be
on show daily from 9am to dusk.
This yearʼs theme - ʻOne of a Pairʼ - covers famous
and infamous pairs such as Beauty & the Beast,
Posh and Becks, Batman & Robin, Bonnie and
Clyde...Vote for your favourite scarecrow, be in
with a chance of winning £50 and enjoy a ʻJust For
Funʼ Quiz to test your knowledge of the pairs.
The organisers would like to say a big thank you to
the scarecrow makers without whom there would
be no scarecrow trail! Are you ready to spot some
scarecrows?
Trail maps cost just £1 and
are available from Budgens
and Dads Shop from
Thursday 19th October.
The maps contain a voucher
which can be exchanged for
car in Budgen’s car park,
though. There is plenty of
on-street parking and two
public car parks.
BOO
It’s scary what we
waste at Halloween!
It’s not just ghosts and witches that can be scary at this
time of year, but also it’s scary to think about all the extra
rubbish that Halloween festivities can generate - including
pumpkins sweet wrappers, packaging and costumes. Follow
our tips to enjoy this late autumn tradition without creating
so much rubbish and have a GREEN HALLOWEEN!
10 million pumpkins are sold in the UK every year and
95% of them are used to carve scary jack-o-lanterns for
Halloween. Most of these pumpkins end up straight in the
bin after 31st October being completely wasted!
Love Pumpkin Soup…Hate Waste!
Don’t waste your pumpkin this Halloween…turn it into
yummy pumpkin soup for the whole family to enjoy!
Soups are a great way to use up any wrinkly vegetables
you may have hiding in the back of the fridge! Don’t forget
to help save Spud by mixing in some potatoes with your
delicious, nutritious pumpkin. Worried about making
too much? Soups can easily be frozen and make an easy
warming meal for the busy days leading up to the holidays
when you may not have time to cook. And don’t bin those
pumpkin seeds you scoop out either; they can make a tasty
snack or plant them to grow next year’s terrifying creation.
When you’ve finished with your pumpkin don’t forget to
recycle it in your green wheelie bin or compost it in your
home composter. If your compost bin is dead and buried,
visit www.getcomposting.com or call 0844 571 444 to get
a discount on a new one.
Don’t be in the dark!
While trick or treating, use rechargeable batteries in your
torch. They will last much longer and reduce waste at the
same time. Even better, try a wind up torch that doesn’t use
batteries at all!
Treats without the trick!
Look for treats that are waste-free like fruit and
homemade biscuits, or reusable toys like colouring pencils
and puzzle books.
Still #1 for Local,
Fresh, Essentials
Like Stamps
& things
MEAT JON THORNER
Multi award winning butcher arrives in Mortimer!
In a thriving village like
Mortimer, there are
some things - people,
businesses, landscapes
- that are a ‘constant’ and
over the years there is
very little change. Annual
events support this, too,
with the Fun Day and
Scarecrow Trail becoming
part of the village character.
These things provide
a sense of security and
identity to a village and the
supermarket on Victoria
Road, currently known
as Budgens Mortimer is
certainly one of these.
Budgens, formally known
as Sewards has been on the
high street since 1957.
But inside the store, it’s a very
different matter, with constant
change needed to keep up
with customers’ expectations
and needs. In recent years, we
have seen the relocation of the
village Post Office to Budgens,
the introduction of a coffee
machine, Contactless Payment,
even more local suppliers and
the much-loved Cook outlet.
Well, now it’s all change again
as Budgens welcomes Jon
Thorner’s of Somerset to the
butchery counter this October.
Jon Thorner’s belongs to
the Q Guild of Butchers - an
organisation which represents
the finest quality independent
meat retailers in Britain.
Admission into the Q Guild of
Butchers is based on an audit
of the whole business; shop,
products, staff, procedures
and customer service. That’s
why you can trust your Jon
Thorner’s butcher to provide
only the best!
And that is certainly reflected
by the impressive list of
awards that Jon Thorner’s
have won this year. This
includes a total of 5 Stars
from the Great Taste Awards
for their fabulous pies! Great
Taste are the world’s most
coveted food awards and
celebrate the very best in
food and drink. As well
as a badge of honour, the
unmistakable black and gold
Great Taste label is a signpost
to a wonderful tasting product,
which has been discovered
through hours and hours of
blind-tasting by hundreds of
judges.
With Jon Thorner’s running
the butchery counter at
Budgens Mortimer, you can
look forward to British, high
welfare and quality meat. In
addition to fresh meat, they
will be offering an awardwinning
range of pies, quiches,
savouries, ready meals,
desserts and cakes.
Budgens Mortimer is
readying itself for the
influx of Scarecrow Trail
visitors alongside its regular
customers, so why not pop
in this month and see what
Jon Thorner’s can offer your
family for tea?
Tric
or
1 packet Oreos, favourite flavour
8 oz Cream cheese (room temperature)
Candy melts, assorted colours (you can
get these on Ebay or at Hobbycraft)
Shortening (Trex or Cookeen) 1 tbs per
1/2 cup candy melts.
Candy eyes, chocolate chips, sprinkles,
etc (for topping)
Cake pop sticks (optional)
Roll the dough into 1 inch round
balls. Arrange on a cookie sheet
lined with parchment paper. If
the dough gets too sticky to work
with, just pop it back into the
fridge for 10 minutes to firm up
again.
Now for the really fun part... Get
creative and decorate the cake
balls. Once finished, they can be
refrigerated for up to 1 week!
Prep time: 10 minutes
Makes 24 cake pops
Chill time total 1 hour
HOW TO MAKE THEM
Crush the Oreos with a blender or
food processor. If you don't have
either, fill a sandwich bag with
Oreos and crush with hands or a
rolling pin to make fine crumbs.
Use a hand mixer to combine the
room cream cheese with the Oreo
crumbs. Blend until a smooth and
sticky 'dough' forms and form into
a ball shape. Refrigerate for 30
minutes, or until firm.
When all the dough is formed into
balls, pop the balls in the fridge
for 15 minutes.
Use about 1/2 cup of candy melts,
in each color of your choice,
and melt with 1 tablespoon of
shortening to thin out the melts.
If using cake pop sticks, dip the
end of each stick into each colour
and push into the center of each
dough ball. Refrigerate for 5
minutes to harden the candy and
secure the dough ball.
Roll each dough ball into each
candy colour until they are
completely coated. Arrange back
on the parchment lined
cookie sheet and
refrigerate 5 minutes
or until the candy has
hardened.
These easy to create adorable
Halloween Oreo Balls — monsters,
pumpkins, bats, and mummies; are
each made with 5 ingredients or less!
Treat
Eye on Fun
eye
Towards
the end of
October
there is
often a buzz
in the air, as
children begin
to get excited
about Halloween
and going ‘Trick
or Treating’. We
all know the
practice.
The children get
dressed up in
their costumes,
knock on doors
and challenge the
house holder by
asking, Trick or
Treat?
Of course, these
days most Trick
or Treaters only
knock on the
doors of their
friends (often
prearranged!)
or at the
very least, knock the
doors of the neighbours
who are displaying
a pumpkin or other
decorations.
So, the question ‘Trick
or Treat’ is posed and
the children are pretty
confident that, faced
with this ‘terrifying’
band of young pirates,
superheroes, pumpkins
and princesses that the
householder will answer
‘Treat’ and present
them with a bowl
of sweets.
If you’re a
cavityfearing
parent,
you
might
want
to
encourage the
householders that
you’re visiting to
answer ‘Trick’. Task
the kids with thinking
up some tricks to play
before you go out. It’s
just a bit of fun, the
“tricks” are as scary as
a knock-knock joke is
funny.
One of our readers gave
us a great example
of this, “We used to
chant, “Trick or Treat,
you’ll smell my feet,
if you don’t give me
something good to eat!”
Then if they said trick
we’d wave dirty socks
at them. Poooeeey!
You could have a bowl
of lollies outside with
a walkie-talkie in the
bottom of the bowl.
Scare people with it
when they reach for
lollies. Another fun
trick on halloween is
to make caramel
covered onions instead
of apples. Or maybe
you could spend some
time making chocolate
covered par-boiled
sprouts... (yes, we’ve
tried this!) Wrap them
up in old ferro rocher
wrappers (of course
you’ll have to eat these
yourself - shame)
Hand these to the
householder that asks
for a trick and they will
get a nasty surprise as
they bite into one!
But be careful, some
householders may be
getting ready to trick
you back. Oh yes, those
who do enter into the
spirit of Hallowe’en
may be looking for their
own entertainment.
Mwahahaha!
Some will dress up
and decorate their
hallway, answering
as a witch or another
scary character. One
particularly fun Dad we
spoke to dressed up as
a scarecrow and sat in
a chair outside his door
looking limp and lifeless
with a bowl of sweets
in his lap. As the trick
or treaters approached
he came to life. Now
THAT’s scary!
If you want to really
confuse the trick or
treaters, when you’re
asked ‘Trick or Treat?’,
try saying “Ooh, treat
please!‘ and watch their
confused little faces...
Whatever you and
yours are doing this
Halloween, enjoy!
Glorious Mud
eye
on Education
Children don’t need experts
to tell them that mud is
good for them and we’re
sure you’ll have nostalgic
memories of making potions,
petal perfumes and the
perfect mud pie – growth of
imagination and creativity is
endless. That’s why we have
our very own mud kitchen for
the budding scientists, artists
and innovators of tomorrow.
Playing in mud encourages children to play
in their own way and exposure to dirt and
germs works to prime a child’s immune
system, helping prevent allergies. Mud is
also an excellent medium for learning. Rich,
engaging sensory mud play allows children
to express their creativity while enhancing
fine motor skills.
Children can also practise social skills
such as co-operation, negotiation,
communication and sharing as they work
together. It’s also great for emerging maths
and science skills.
We’re extremely proud of our outdoor
learning environment and provide a high
quality early years education with superb
care alongside outstanding facilities. We
are fortunate to be located in over fifty
acres of open countryside and private
woodland. We even have our very own
working farm!
Playing and learning outside is a daily
activity for all the children at Jubilee Gems.
Our highly experienced team provide
care for babies from 3 months to children
aged five, giving the best possible start
for intellectual, emotional and social
development and ensuring your child can
achieve his or her full potential in a loving
and secure environment.
Just a few minutes drive from Mortimer,
we highly recommend a visit to see firsthand
the fantastic opportunities we can
offer your child and to meet our team.
Open during West Berkshire Schools
term-time from 7.30am-6.00pm, we offer
Jubilee Gems Nursery is
passionate about the outdoors
What do people say about us?
‘Fantastic, wonderful, brilliant,
amazing! Just the best nursery I
could have wished for.... I moved
my son from another nursery
and it was the best decision I’ve
made. Most importantly my son
is so happy. He has made friends
and does so much every day from
woodland walks, painting, making,
drawing, playing, mud kitchens
and outdoor play. He even asks to
go on his morning off.
‘I feel totally confident that I
am leaving my child in the best
hands. All the staff are wonderful
- they always smile, chat, tell
me everything my son has been
doing and what’s going on... they
actually make me feel happy even
if I’m having a stressful morning.’
guises. Each from broken homes and
dysfunctional families the kids spend
their summer escaping the clutches of
the town’s bullies whilst hunting down
the bloodthirsty clown.
Muschietti’s decision to focus the
narrative more on the lives of the
children rather than on Pennywise
means you are drawn in by familiar
childhood themes that we can all
relate to: fear, anxiety, joy, and
sadness. But the most important
running theme throughout the movie
is a real sense of fun, innocence and
adventure with a spirit that is hard not
to buy into. By placing the story in the
1980s means that for some of us there
is also a real feeling of nostalgia, with
plenty of nods to the pop culture of
the day (most notably with an amusing
nod to boy band New Kids On The
Block)
eye
on Leisure
A fun and freaky carnival ride
with bumps, jumps and plenty
of clowning around!
If you happen to suffer from
coulrophobia (a fear of clowns)
then I recommend you give new
shock horror movie IT a wide berth.
That said the only real shock in this
adaptation of Stephen King’s classic
killer clown story is the lack of any
genuine horror. This is not the fright-fest
the trailer may have you believe, but
instead a teenage coming of age tale
with a few scares thrown in….but it’s a
pleasant surprise. It’s riffs on Stand By
Me, Goonies and TV hit Stranger Things
give it a mass appeal and make for a
real crowd pleaser.
Although the movie retells just one part
of the novel, Director Andy Muschietti
has stayed pretty faithful to the original
story. Set in the sleepy town of Derry,
a group of young misfit kids bond
to help face their worst nightmare:
Pennywise - a shapeshifting demon
clown who emerges from the town
sewers every 27 years to feast on its
children. Self-dubbed ‘The Loser’s Club’
the group all have their own personal
fears that manifest themselves in freaky
encounters with Pennywise in various
Amidst the mayhem there are some
heartwarming moments as the group’s
bond deepens and their lives and
loves are laid bare. The relationship
between the leader of the club Bill
(Jaeden Lieberher) and the only girl
member Bev (Sophia Lillis) is especially
touching. Tim Curry did a fine job
portraying Pennywise the clown in the
80s TV Mini-Series but hats off to Bill
Skarsgård who makes this role his own.
His all-out, ambidextrous action style
tempered by a baby-like demeanour
is both creepy and entertaining but
never too terrifying.
IT should come with a warning. This
is not a horror movie, and is not
particularly scary but instead it’s a fun
and freaky carnival ride with bumps,
jumps and plenty of clowning around.
mystical armour is Tom, and Tom and Elenna will need to go on another marvellous mission to
get the fantastic, powerful armour back. This Quest is going to be more dangerous than they
could imagine because the amour is in six pieces scattered throughout Avantia.
Overall, I thought that Beast Quest was an excellent book because there is adventure, fantasy
and many beasts to defeat. My favourite two parts of the book is the introduction and the battle
because these are the most interesting parts of the book. I would recommend this to people who
like fantasy and adventure. What is brilliant is that there are lots of books in this series, so if you like
the first one, you can read them all and it will keep you busy until Christmas!
Year 11 is the year when
YOU start to decide what
happens next.
You might be considering
A LEVELS – you can take
these at either a School
Sixth form or a Local
College. Contrary to
popular belief, A Levels
obtained from a College
are just as good as A
Levels obtained from a
Sixth Form – in fact they
are exactly the same A
Levels!
If you want to take
A Levels, you will be
expected to get a 4 and
above in your GCSEs – For
some subjects such as
the Sciences, Schools or
Colleges may want you
to have higher results in
those subjects at GCSE.
http://russellgroup.ac.uk/
for-students/school-andcollege-in-the-uk/subjectchoices-at-school-andcollege/
A Levels not the route
you want to take? Many
students don’t feel that A
Levels are the right route
for them and so start
looking at alternatives
such as BTEC. Local
Colleges offer many
different courses, all with
different Entry Levels. It is
possible to go to College
even if you don’t get the
GCSE grades that you had
hoped for. College courses
run from Entry Level
Courses right through to
Level 3 Courses (the same
level as A Levels) and
above.
You CAN apply to
You might want to
learn more about
APPRENTICESHIPS –
these combine practical
work with studying. It is a
myth that Apprenticeships
aren’t as good as A Levels,
they are just a different
way of working towards
a goal. They allow you to
become qualified, gain
work experience and get
paid a salary – what’s not
to like? Apprenticeships
start from Level 2 (the
same level as GCSEs) and
go up to University Level.
apprenticeships-guide
You might want to think
about WORKING – You
must be working for 20
hours or more per week
and combine this with
a part time Training or
Education Course.
to start thinking,
