GIVING THANKS
MICHELLE SPITZER
This is easily my favorite time of
year. I love all the parties, family
festivals and of course, the food.
As the holidays seem to become
more and more commercialized
each year, I try to teach my kids
that it’s not all about the wrapped
presents. I’m sure a lot of you feel
the same way, we want our kids to be grateful for
what they have, appreciate what they get and
realize how fortunate they are.
Reporter Katie Parsons wrote an article that
features some local organizations doing great
work in our community. These charities are good
examples of ways children can give back to
others, which I know a lot of people like to do this
time of year.
Now I may not be the
craftiest mom out there,
but I still like to test out
my Pinterest skills in the
kitchen. My kids love
when I surprise them
with a breakfast that
looks like a turkey or
vegetables shaped like a
pumpkin.
I’ll definitely be trying
a fun recipe provided by
Carrie Sullivan, owner of
The Gathering Table. She
Spitzer
shared an adorable
recipe your kids will
enjoy making and eating.
I’d love to hear some of the creative dishes you
come up with. Email me or share them on our
Facebook page.
If kitchen craftiness isn’t your thing, try some
arts and crafts projects. The talented folks at
Gymboree Play & Music of Melbourne have a
few fun activities perfect for this time of year.
Since it is technically fall (although it doesn’t
exactly feel like it), swimming may not be at the
top of your list of things to do, but swim safety
should be. Living in Florida, this is something we
need to keep in mind all year long. Take a look at
the feature we have in the magazine this month.
It’s an important topic we shouldn’t forget about.
Finally, we’re starting a new series every
month where we highlight a new teacher and his
or her area of expertise. Kicking things off we
have Dr. Desmond Blackburn, the
superintendent of Brevard Public Schools. He
shared some changes taking place this school
year.
If you know a great teacher who deserves to
be featured, send me an email at
mspitzer@floridatoday.com. I’d love to hear
about them and possibly put them in the
magazine.
Finally, I want to say how thankful I am that
all of you readers support this magazine. Please
continue emailing me and sharing ideas and
feedback. Have a great Thanksgiving!
NOVEMBER RECIPES
CARRIE SULLIVAN
November is a great time to gather the whole family in
the kitchen, share old family recipes and try some new
ones. In our house we seem to be cooking the whole month
in preparation for Thanksgiving. Here’s a few new recipes
for your families to try and hopefully add to your holiday
meals.
Pumpkin Soup
with Bacon and Sage
» 1 small edible pumpkin, peeled &
chopped
» 3 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks
» 1 onion, cut into large pieces
» 3 cloves of garlic, peeled
» 3 slices bacon, chopped up
» Handful of sage leaves
» Sprinkle of chilli flakes, if desired
» 1 tsp. dried thyme
» Salt + pepper
» Drizzle of olive oil
» 4-6 c. vegetable stock, depending on
the thickness that you like
1. Pre-heat your oven to 400°. Peel
and chop your pumpkin, onion and
carrots and place them onto a large
baking sheet. Toss in your garlic,
sage & bacon. Sprinkle with chili
flakes, thyme, salt, pepper and olive
oil and toss together.
2. Roast in the oven for about 45
minutes.
3. Using a blender or food
processor, puree the vegetables
while slowly adding the stock. You
will have to do this in batches. Taste
for seasoning and add more salt &
pepper if necessary.
4. Place the pureed soup on the
stove and heat over medium heat
until hot.
Is a backpack injuring your child?
Many kids experience pain caused by
overloaded or improperly used backpacks.
Here are 5 safety tips from an expert:
JERRY CARINO
"Most of the problems we see are
caused by posture changes — kids
bending forward or leaning to one side.
You really want to make sure that both
straps are on. Sometimes the kids want
to be cool and whip it over one side. But
when both straps are on and evenly
tightened, it sits better against
a student's upper back."
Raymond Howard
regional director of rehab services
Each weekday morning, millions of
kids strap on backpacks before they
head to school. Is this ritual putting
your child at risk for injury?
"We see that a lot," Raymond Howard
said.
Howard is regional director of rehab
services for two RWJBarnabas Health
facilities: Community Medical Center
in Toms River, New Jersey, and
Monmouth Medical Center Southern
Campus in Lakewood. Each fall he sees
a dozen or more students with shoulder,
back and neck pain, and sometimes
headaches, caused by overloaded or
improperly used backpacks.
Those ages 10-12 are the most
vulnerable, Howard said, because the
textbooks are getting bigger but their
bodies remain underdeveloped.
"It's one of those things people don't
really think about," Howard said, "but
once you have a kid with an injury like
this you realize, it's something you
really can avoid."
To coincide with National School
Backpack Awareness Day (Sept. 20),
Howard offers five tips for staying
healthy:
1. Find an appropriate backpack
"You really want one that has pads in
the back, on the shoulders and in the
under-arm regions, so it's more
comfortable and takes away the
pressure," Howard said. "They should
have hip and chest belts. That helps to
transfer some of the weight from the
back and shoulders to the hips and
torso."
He also recommends backpacks
with several compartments, which
allows for a less concentrated
distribution of items, and one with
reflective material — especially for
kids who walk to school or a bus stop
before the sun rises.
2. Know the weight guideline.
"As a rule, the (fully packed)
backpack should weigh no more than 15
percent of the child's body weight,"
Howard said.
For a 50-pound student, for example,
that means a backpack and contents
weighing less than eight pounds.
Howards said his daughter Kailee,
who walks to Lacey High School,
carries only books the books she
absolutely needs for a given day. If a
text is particularly weighty, consider
purchasing a second version so there is
one at home and one at school, negating
the need for transport.
3. Load the backpack carefully
"Try to get the heaviest items closest
to their back," Howard said. "So if they
have big textbooks, the backpack is not
hanging far away from the back and
causing posture problems."
4. Carry the backpack properly
"Most of the problems we see are
caused by posture changes — kids
bending forward or leaning to one side,"
Howard said. "You really want to make
sure that both straps are on. Sometimes
the kids want to be cool and whip it
over one side. But when both straps are
on and evenly tightened, it sits better
against a student's upper back."
For younger students, he said,
parents should guard against winching
the straps too tight. He's seen cases
where that caused numbness or
tingling in the arms.
5. Be aware of problem signs
"Always look for changes in their
body posture," Howard said. "If you
have a kid with great posture and they
put the backpack on and it looks like
they're walking up Mount Everest with
a week's worth of supplies, that's a
problem."
Posture problems, he said, often are
followed by pain.
"Changes in posture can lead to neck
pain, back pain and sometimes even
headaches," Howard said. "You're going
to get some red marks from a
backpack, but if there are excessive
red marks or bruising, it's way too
heavy."
Caring, Giving
A look at how to help local families
in need this holiday season
KATIE PARSONS
All the materialism that goes along with the
holidays can leave parents feeling like they
aren’t doing enough to show their kids a spirit of
goodwill. It’s also the time of year that people of
all belief systems tend to want to give back in
small or large ways – and to pass those actions
down to their children.
If you’re looking for ways that your family
can make a difference in the lives of other local families this holiday season,
Brevard.
This year’s one-day event takes
place Sunday, November 19 beginning
at 10 a.m. at Satellite High School. At
that time, food drop-offs take place and
volunteers beginning creating meal
baskets in an assembly-line style. At
the end of basket creation, people who
have volunteered to deliver the baskets
receive their addresses. Many of the
families who receive baskets are in
transitional periods due to illness, job
loss or even a death in the family. Kids
get to see the outcome of their hard
work at the end of the day.
“This is a great event for families
and especially for kids since they get to
package, decorate, and then personally
deliver the basket themselves,” said
Basket Brigade director Jacqueline
Giurleo.
Already this year 2,000 meal baskets
have been requested through 148 local
organizations or case workers for
families who need the lift. Hurricane
Irma contributed to that higher
number, Giurleo said.
Donations are needed for food
basket items that include frozen
turkeys, mashed potatoes, stuffing,
gravy, cranberry sauce, canned yams,
brown and serve rolls and pumpkin
pies.
Friends of Sally’s House
Sally’s House is a Brevard-based
outreach program for women
recovering from drug or alcohol abuse.
Women with children or who are
pregnant can seek assistance through
Sally’s House programs, including safe
housing.
“We help our women learn to live
and work independently without drugs
or alcohol and we help them get back on
their feet,” said Veronica Weiss, Sally’s
House Program Director.
Sally’s House operates under the
umbrella of the Circles of Care Inc.
which provides comprehensive
behavioral healthcare services
throughout the Brevard.
Year-round Sally’s House needs
diapers, dish soap, and other basic
home necessities. During the holiday
season, Weiss said donations of gift
cards to places like Walmart, Publix or
Target are especially helpful.
“Toys are great but in most cases, it’s
better for the mother to pick out the
gifts for her children or use the gift
card for a holiday meal,” Weiss said.
“Any remaining gift cards can be used
throughout the year for other needs
too.”
To donate, contact Weiss to arrange a
pickup at vweiss@circlesofcare.org.
“Toys are great but in most
cases, it’s better for the
Women’s Center of Brevard
As a haven for women and children
in Brevard, the Women’s Center served
12,000 people in 2016 through domestic
violence/sexual assault programs,
counseling, two safe houses and
transitional housing. The non-profit
helps women and their families rebuild
lives for the long term.
For women who need a leg up as
they move forward, the Women’s
Center has 13 apartments available for
up to two years where rent is paid on an
individual financial basis.
“Every woman in our program has a
case manager who helps with career
issues, budgeting and other life skills,”
Executive Director Jenny Gessler said.
The program is always accepting
donations for things like clothing,
household items and diapers. The
holiday season sees an increase in those
donations, along with cash and gift card
items.
“We try not to ask for really specific
items,” Gessler said. “Gift cards are
usually the best because teens’ gifts are
a little more expensive than toys for
little ones. Gift cards aren’t as exciting
to give but they’re smart because
everybody gets what they need.”
For those who want to donate actual
items, Gessler suggests bicycles,
tricycles and toys for newborns to age
12.
Donations can be mailed or dropped
off to any of the Women’s Center’s
three Brevard locations: 1425 Aurora
Road in Melbourne; 400 Julia Street in
Titusville; and 1565 Sarno Road in
Melbourne, which is the administrative
office.
Brilliant Smiles Christmas Meals
Families that want to help provide a
Christmas meal for others in the
community can take part in the
Brilliant Smiles holiday dinner drive.
Sponsored by local orthodontist Dr.
Romia Goff of Brilliant Smiles, and
administered through Brevard Public
School’s Partners in Education
program, the initiative has a goal of
helping feed 250+ families a Christmas
meal this year.
“We reach out to guidance
counselors and other staff at local
schools to find out which families need
these meals, and then Dr. Goff provides
LOOKING AHEAD AT BPS
SUPERINTENDENT DESMOND BLACKBURN
Every time I walk into a classroom
in Brevard County, I am proud. There
are phenomenal educators in our
schools doing amazing work with our
babies. The district itself is a hidden
gem, a place I’ve come to appreciate. I
am proud of the work we do and it’s
because of our loyal educators,
community leaders, legislators, parents
and students.
I wanted to share with you some
changes taking place this school year
that will continue to help us achieve
success and maintain our status as one
of the top school districts in the state.
New Discipline Plan:
All schools this year are applying a
new discipline plan. It was carefully
researched and designed to make sure
that school leaders administer
discipline consistently and fairly across
the district for misbehavior, regardless
of the student’s background.
It is not a relaxing of standards. Nor
is it a zero-tolerance policy. Instead, it
gives principals a range of clearly
defined options for nearly every
situation.
No school discipline plan can take
the place of the discipline and social
and moral guidance that should be
provided by students’ families and
community organizations such as
churches.
Early Literacy Improving: The
percentage of Brevard students who
earned satisfactory scores on the
English language arts portion of the
Florida Standards Assessment
improved at all grade levels last year,
especially in grades 3-5. In the early
grades – where reading proficiency is
considered key to future academic
success – passing rates increased by
four percentage points, from 57
percent to 61 percent. While we are
leaders in the state, the parent in me,
the educator in me can’t rest until we
put a big dent in the number of students
who are not proficient. A student’s
ability to read and be able to retain will
give and give for life. Without a love
and passion for reading at an early age,
it becomes a wound that we are unable
to patch. We need to double down and
start that passion for reading early.
Math Improving: Algebra is a
gateway course to life. In Florida, all
students must pass Algebra 1 to
graduate high school. We want to get as
many students as possible to algebra
No school discipline plan
can take the place of the
discipline and social and
moral guidance that should
be provided by students’
families and community
organizations.
before the even enter high school. The
bar is set high, but that’s because we’re
Brevard County. We put people into
space, the bar should be set high here.
The intermediate grades in elementary
really have to embrace this. That way,
when students reach middle school,
they’re off to the races. Algebra is
everywhere. It’s part of everyday life.
Ninety-five percent of college students
who can’t pass algebra don’t get a
college degree. We want to make sure
our students are more than prepared.
Security Accelerated: In 2014 voters
approved a sales tax that allowed
funding for capital repairs. This money
is being used to create a single-point of
access at all schools as well as
remote-locking doors and a video
camera. Originally the plan was to take
3 – 5 years. We decided we wanted to do
all the schools asap. You may have seen
some construction going on at your
school. The county-wide project will be
completed by spring break 2018. If you
have any questions about the process, a
five-minute conversation with your
principal will answer all your
questions. Safety is a top priority for
us. We want to make sure we’re
keeping the wrong people out and the
right people in.
Reopening South Lake Elementary:
We have amazing opportunities in
Brevard County, but in talking to
people, I learned not every child has
access due to economics or geography.
The northern area of Brevard really
fell into that category. We want to close
that gap and give that community the
same chances everyone else is getting.
In the 2018-2019 school year, we plan to
have students walking into a choice
school in Titusville. We’re taking this
year to build it with the help of the
community. We need input. Whenever
you hear we’re out and about we need
to hear from you so we know what you
want out of this school.
so you want to make sure it won’t pull through. The long end of the sting will
hang through the cup.
Step 2
- Cut a cheap sponge into quarters. Take a ¼ and tie the string around the
middle of the sponge.
Step 3
- Decorate your cup with wiggly eyes, beak and feather
You’re all done! All you have to do is dampen the sponge and use it to pinch the
string and pull down!
Swim safety all year long
JULIA RINGSMITH
Spring and summer are always the seasons when people
think about swimming.
That is when people have pool parties and
get-togethers. Naturally, if you are wearing
long-sleeves and sweaters, the last thing on your mind
is putting on a bathing suit and jumping into a pool.
The truth is, Fall and Winter are the perfect time to
start swimming. You have 3-6 months to perfect your
floating and swimming skills. By the time Spring Break and
Summer roll around, you'll be ready to enjoy your time and be
confident in your skills.
Water safety in Florida is crucial. Most people either have a pool,
live next to someone with a pool, or know someone who has a pool.
Not to mention all the bodies of water (rivers, retention ponds,
beaches) that are all around us.
We at Pro-Health and Fitness offer swimming lessons starting as
young as 6 months. I suggest parents look into lessons for their
children when they become mobile. As any parent can attest, if they
can crawl; they can find their way anywhere. Usually that means
places you don't want them to go.
Children have limited retention. If they don't use it; they won't
remember it from season to season.
I speak from experience. When my youngest son was 5, he
accidently walked into our pool fully clothed.
It was early March and we had friends over. He had been
swimming like a fish all summer long so we weren't concerned with
him around the pool.
Imagine our shock when he began to panic and flail. Luckily, a
friend jumped in and rescued him. After that, we put both kids in
swim lessons year round until they were old enough to retain the
knowledge.
Swimming isn't just for the young either. We have adults that
take lessons because they never learned as a child. Florida has so
many transplants from other states and countries. Many of those
places didn't have year-round access to pools and other bodies of
water; so swimming and water safety wasn't as important.
Now that they are living in Florida, they are realizing that it is an
important skill to have.
