Students organise conference $20,000 will help cool classrooms Kingsthorpe State School will soon be cooler, thanks to a mighty $20,000 raised at the Art Exhibition and Multi Auction on Friday, October 27. Principal James Leach said there were over 200 bidding cards with a wine barrel bar donated by Matt Griffiths, a father of three former students, the highest selling item for the night. “The $20,000 profit will be used towards air conditioning some of the eight remaining classrooms that are not yet air conditioned. “This event brought the community together, not just our present school families but many past families and residents,” Mr Leach said. “A large number of people contributed to its success. It wasn’t just our dedicated P. and C. committee and staff, but a lot of other parents, individuals and businesses who donated their time, goods and services. “With such a good attendance at our inaugural event, plans are already in the pipeline for a similar exhibition and auction to be held in the next year or so.” Year 6 students at Mary MacKillop Catholic College are organising a Kids Connect Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) conference at the college next week. The MS Swimathon season includes ten events held across the state combining two great loves of Queenslanders, swimming and supporting a worthwhile cause. Teams swim together, relay style, for 12 hours, raising funds for those living with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) in their local community and racking up the kilometres with a lot of fun and friendly competition along the way. Swimming is a popular low-impact mobility therapy option for those with MS and the MS Swimathons are a great part of the MS Queensland events portfolio connecting those living with MS to those in their local area. The Toowoomba MS Swimathon event is one of 10 held across Queensland and together the events aim to raise over $240,000 to continue the important services provided by MS Queensland in local areas. Teams participating in the Toowoomba event will strive to raise $35,000 together for people living with MS in the local region. Over the past five years Toowoomba Swimathons have raised over $150,000 to help ensure LNP promises school zone lights Member for Toowoomba North, Trevor Watts, has confirmed an elected LNP Government would invest $105,000 for vital road safety upgrades for Toowoomba North State School and Mater Dei Primary School. MS is the most common chronic neurological condition affecting young adults in Australia. The average age of diagnosis is just 30 and MS affects almost three times more women than men. There is approximately one in every 1000 people living with MS in Australia, equating to more than 23,000 Australians and over 3700 living in Queensland. With no known cause or cure and symptoms varying significantly between those diagnosed, the total cost of MS to individuals and the community is high.
