FARMING
Harvesting after a season of contrasts
By MILES NOLLER
Harvesting of winter crops is
proceeding across the Northern
Downs, but it has been a season of
contrasts.
Most winter crops of wheat,
barley and chickpeas were planted
on good rain dropped by Cyclone
Debbie in March.
This was followed by bits and
pieces of rain through a dry winter,
until good rains in October.
All of this was preceeded by
a very dry summer of 2016-17,
which depleted soil moisture.
President of AgForce Grains
Wayne Newton said this crop was
a “long way back” on last year.
Rain was patchy, there were hail
storms in places, and frosts in September
damaged some crops particularly
chickpeas.
Mr Newton said some farms
might have had 100mm during
the growing period and others half
this.
Your local agent
He said even the good rains of
October were patchy with some
districts receiving up to 100mm
and others just 30mm.
At Highland Plains north of
Oakey, Max and Peter Kuhl and
their families are reasonably satisfied
with the start of harvesting,
with barley yielding almost one
tonne to the acre.
Max Kuhl said it was not the
worst winter crop they have
grown. They grew 400 acres of
wheat and barley, and 600 acres of
chickpeas.
An agronomist has told them
the chickpeas are “as good as anywhere.”
They are planting just 200 acres
of sorghum this year, and plan to
grow more forage crops, because
they have acquired some cattle
breeders.
Some of this forage will be on
chickpea land, to get a cover over
the land.
Money for groups and individuals to farm smarter
Most of the grants
will be multi-year
grants of between
$250,000 and $4 million
across the Darling
Downs to put in place
new and innovative
sustainable land management
practices,
which protect and improve
the condition of
soils, vegetation and
biodiversity.
“These Smart Farming
Partnerships will
support the development,
trialling and implementation
of next
generation farming and
forestry practices,” Dr
McVeigh said.
“The grants will help
groups of organisations
to come up with, or take
advantage of the next
great idea, the benefits
of which can be shared
across the community
and the world.
“Having healthy and
productive soils, biodiversity
and vegetation
will benefit farmers,
communities and consumers.
The Darling
Downs has always been
known for its innovation
in the field of agriculture
and I am sure
the next ‘big’ idea is just
around the corner.
“Applying sustainable
land and water
management practices
on the ground and harnessing
local knowledge
is delivering tangible
environmental and
financial benefits to our
communities and farm
businesses—that is why
the government has invested
$1 billion in the
future of Landcare.
“I know first-hand
that farmers in Groom
are innovators, and the
government is supporting
that innovative
thinking to help local
farmers continue to
farm smarter, not harder.”
“I encourage interested
parties to get in
touch with my office to
find out more about the
Smart Farming Partnerships
and how to
apply.”
The first phase
was: The National
Landcare Program
Phase 1 which ran from
July 2014 to June 2018,
and the Australian
Government invested
$1 billion to continue
its longstanding commitment
to delivering
on-ground biodiversity
and sustainable agriculture
outcomes that benefit
our community and
environment.
The National Landcare
Program’s new
Smart Farming Partnerships
falls under
the National Landcare
Program Phase
