HIGH COUNTRY HERALD, NOVEMBER 7, 2017 - 3

TO THE EDITOR
Credit where credit is due
Toowoomba North Labor candidate’s
letter of September 4
claims the second range crossing
among other things as his party’s
achievement.
Nothing could be further from
the truth.
He and his government did
nothing about the second crossing
in their 11 years in office.
It was clearly too difficult for
them. It was the LNP member
for Toowoomba North, Trevor
Watts, and his Federal coalition
colleagues who acquired the
land and funding for the second
range crossing.
The Labor candidate when,
he was member, was clearly not
serious about it. He spoke about
it only three times in 11 years.
Trevor Watts was serious and
spoke about it 36 times in just
five years.
Mr Watts and the LNP Government,
together with their
Federal coalition colleagues, secured
the funding for the second
crossing now approaching completion
in 2018.
The current Labor Government
merely inherited the funding
at the last election, after all
the hard work had been done.
The Labor candidate claimed
Wilsonton State High school’s
$5million hall as his party’s
achievement. In fact, it was
Trevor Watts who, in both Government
and Opposition, campaigned
vigorously for, and famously
organised petitions for the
new school hall.
The Labor candidate, when in
government, did secure the purchase
of land for the construction
of Highfields State High
School. Curiously, he omitted
this from his list.
In fact, nothing more was
done throughout his 11 years in
office. Trevor Watts and the LNP
Government did the hard work.
They funded and organised the
construction of the Highfields
State High School.
The Labor candidate claimed
credit for his government providing
the water pipeline to
Toowoomba.
It was a knee-jerk reaction,
during the massive drought, to
the warning of climate alarmist
Tim Flannery who infamously
warned that, because of “global
warming” our dams would never
fill again.
It did rain and the dams did
fill and Flannery was completely
discredited.
The result was a massive cost
over-run for which all Toowoomba
and Highfields home-owners
are now paying an extra $500
a year for their water, cutely
named “Water Connection Fee."
The Labor candidate’s claims
are inaccurate and unfair.
Toowoomba North needs an
energetic and capable member
with the proven ability and willingness
to tackle all the difficult
and important issues. - Neil
Munro, Toowoomba.
Watts pledges better sporting facilities for Highfields
Member for Toowoomba North, Trevor
Watts, has announced an LNP Government
will invest in new equipment and facilities
for two community sports venues in Highfields.
Under an LNP Government, Highfields
Sports and Recreation Park will be supplied
with two new catch nets, and Kratzke Road
Athletics Oval will receive a new equipment
storage shed.
“These two local projects are great news
for Highfields, and at $34,000, they are great
On October 28, I held a
garage sale at my home in
Crows Nest.
It was to raise funds
for an organisation called
RAW Impact which
works with under privileged
families in Cambodia.
It is a hands-on, notfor-profit
organisation
value for money. Best of all, they support an
active and healthy Toowoomba community,”
said Mr Watts.
“By investing in our local sporting
grounds, we ensure they remain fit for purpose
and attractive venues for local and representative
sporting competitions, which is
great for our local economy.
“Regional Queensland is a place of untold
opportunity, which needs to be re-invigorated.
Under the LNP, Toowoomba will get its
fair share.
whose philosophy is to
give families a hand up
rather than a hand-out.
They are currently
working in a number of
villages to build houses
and establish vegetable
gardens which are then
given to the families in
need.
I will be going to Cambodia
as a volunteer early
next year to help the organisation
do this work.
RAW Impact requests
volunteers assist them
to raise funds to enable
them to purchase the
materials and equipment
needed.
I would like to emphasise
that the funds raised
“These investments ensure our regional
community once again shares in the wealth
it creates for this state.
“A vote for anyone other than the LNP will
see the return of a do-nothing Labor Government,
and that is bad news for families,
small businesses and community groups in
Toowoomba.
“These commitments are all part of our
plan to Build a Better Queensland, by building
a better Toowoomba.
Helping under privileged families in Cambodia
from my garage sale will
not be used for my travel
costs or expenses. It will
go directly to RAW Impact.
The amount raised
at the garage sale was
$1455. I would like to
thank the many people
who came and bought
items for sale.
I would also like to
thank the people who donated
goods and assisted
with the event in various
ways.
These people include
my neighbours, extended
family and other members
of the Crows Nest
community. - Lynn Bartimote,
Students organise conference
$20,000 will help cool classrooms
Kingsthorpe State School will soon be cooler,
thanks to a mighty $20,000 raised at the Art Exhibition
and Multi Auction on Friday, October 27.
Principal James Leach said there were over 200
bidding cards with a wine barrel bar donated by
Matt Griffiths, a father of three former students,
the highest selling item for the night.
“The $20,000 profit will be used towards air
conditioning some of the eight remaining classrooms
that are not yet air conditioned.
“This event brought the community together,
not just our present school families but many past
families and residents,” Mr Leach said.
“A large number of people contributed to its
success. It wasn’t just our dedicated P. and C.
committee and staff, but a lot of other parents, individuals
and businesses who donated their time,
goods and services.
“With such a good attendance at our inaugural
event, plans are already in the pipeline for a similar
exhibition and auction to be held in the next
year or so.”
Year 6 students at Mary MacKillop Catholic College are organising a Kids Connect Science,
Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) conference at the college next
MS Swimathon this Saturday
The 2017 local Toowoomba Swimathon will
be held this Saturday.
The MS Swimathon season includes ten
events held across the state combining two
great loves of Queenslanders, swimming and
supporting a worthwhile cause.
Teams swim together, relay style, for 12
hours, raising funds for those living with MS
(Multiple Sclerosis) in their local community
and racking up the kilometres with a lot of fun
and friendly competition along the way.
Swimming is a popular low-impact mobility
therapy option for those with MS and the
MS Swimathons are a great part of the MS
Queensland events portfolio connecting those
living with MS to those in their local area.
The Toowoomba MS Swimathon event is
one of 10 held across Queensland and together
the events aim to raise over $240,000 to continue
the important services provided by MS
Queensland in local areas. Teams participating
in the Toowoomba event will strive to raise
$35,000 together for people living with MS in
the local region.
Over the past five years Toowoomba Swimathons
have raised over $150,000 to help ensure
The Highfields Aquatic Centre is a fantastic
supporter of the MS Swimathon event, many
staff and members are joining together to make
a splash this Saturday, November 11.
MS is the most common chronic neurological
condition affecting young adults in Australia.
The average age of diagnosis is just 30 and
MS affects almost three times more women
than men.
There is approximately one in every 1000
people living with MS in Australia, equating
to more than 23,000 Australians and over 3700
living in Queensland.
With no known cause or cure and symptoms
varying significantly between those diagnosed,
the total cost of MS to individuals and the community
is high.
With limited government funding for the
extensive support services provided by MS
Queensland to those living with MS, fundraising
activities such as the MS Swimathons are
vitally important. - Rebecca Graham, Project
Manager MS Swimathons.
teachers at morning drop-off and afternoon pickup,
as well as all motorists who use these roads on
the morning and afternoon commute,” Mr Watts
said.
“The LNP, when last in government, made
school zone safety a priority, with the rollout of
hundreds of flashing school zone lights across
Queensland schools.
“Delivering traffic safety upgrades for our local
school communities is just another way the LNP is
supporting families and building the roads, bridges
and dams we need,” Mr Watts said.
Big crowd at trophy day
Concordia becoming AFL destination
Concordia Lutheran College
is fast becoming an AFL destination
in Toowoomba, according
to AFL Queensland’s Darling
Downs Regional Manager Jeff
Neumann.
AFL is important in the sports
curriculum and a large number
of its students have made regional
representative sides this year.
A good example of the
school’s AFL appeal is 15-yearold
footballing prodigy and Troy
Clarke Scholarship recipient,
Zimmorlei Farquharson, who
will attend Concordia next year.
Highway changes at Kingsthorpe
The intersection of Gowrie Mountain School
Road and the Warrego Highway has shifted 100
metres to the west as roadworks continue at
Zimms Corner at Kingsthorpe.
This means that motorists travelling along
Gowrie Mountain School Road will be using the
new roundabout to access the Warrego Highway.
Some of the roundabout exits will remain closed
while work continues on the new overpass.
“They’ve got quite a few outstanding
athletes across many
different sports,” Neumann said.
Concordia, along with the
Darling Downs region, have had
another big win with the arrival
of AFLW player Sabrina Frederick-Traub
to deliver a talent
session and present the school’s
sports awards at a special breakfast..
“To have ‘Sabs’ there to
present not only just the Australian
Footballer of the Year, but all
the school sports awards is massive
for us from an AFL point
of view,” he said.“It’s a massive
win and all the boys and girls are
really looking forward to Sabs’
arrival.”
The feedback from students
and families around the attendance
of Frederick-Traub has
been hugely positive and some
participants will be travelling up
to two hours to attend the talent
session, highlighting its popularity
in the region.
Reduced speed limits, directional signage and
traffic control will be in place.
Motorists are asked to take care while travelling
through the area.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads
thanks you for your patience during these works.
For more information please check the QLD-
Traffic App or phone 13 19 40.
Parliamentary committees
are an important part of the
work of the Parliament.
They investigate issues
and bills (proposed laws) in
detail, so that the Parliament
can be well-informed before
making decisions of national
significance.
Now I am on a number of
committees and it’s great that
they all have significance for
our electorate of Groom.
I am Chair of the
Select Committee for
Regional Development and
Decentralisation which will
visit Toowoomba early in the
new year. We are considering
the best practice approaches
to regional development
and decentralisation of both
government departments
and corporate groups and
Toowoomba and the Downs
certainly has a lot to offer.
On the Industry, Innovation,
Science and Resources
Committee we have just
completed an enquiry into
the potential of automated
vehicles in Australia and the
roads, rules and regulations
we will need in the decades
ahead for so called ‘driverless
cars’.
In regional areas like ours
this will be a key issue in the
future – will we use them
locally and/or to go to and
from Brisbane? Also, what
many opportunities this will
provide for the disabled and
the elderly if a vehicle can be
called anywhere, anytime?
Much to consider!
The Agriculture and
Water Resources Committee
enquiry into Irrigation
Water Use Efficiency across
Australia has seen how our
own University of Southern
Queensland leads the nation
in this research and that our
irrigators on the Downs are
among the most efficient and
productive in the country.
The Joint Committee for
Foreign Affairs, Defence and
Trade has been enquiry into
opportunities for Australia’s
trade with the United
Kingdom following its exit
from the European Union.
This holds great potential
for our farmers – could
we see a return to the high
levels of dairy exports from
the Darling Downs to the
United Kingdom that we last
observed in the mid-1900s?
And finally the Public
Accounts & Audit
Committee examines various
Government departments’
efficiency and effectiveness
of service delivery including
here on the Downs.
Until next month regards,
FARMING
Harvesting after a season of contrasts
By MILES NOLLER
Harvesting of winter crops is
proceeding across the Northern
Downs, but it has been a season of
contrasts.
Most winter crops of wheat,
barley and chickpeas were planted
on good rain dropped by Cyclone
Debbie in March.
This was followed by bits and
pieces of rain through a dry winter,
until good rains in October.
All of this was preceeded by
a very dry summer of 2016-17,
which depleted soil moisture.
President of AgForce Grains
Wayne Newton said this crop was
a “long way back” on last year.
Rain was patchy, there were hail
storms in places, and frosts in September
damaged some crops particularly
chickpeas.
Mr Newton said some farms
might have had 100mm during
the growing period and others half
this.
He said even the good rains of
October were patchy with some
districts receiving up to 100mm
and others just 30mm.
At Highland Plains north of
Oakey, Max and Peter Kuhl and
their families are reasonably satisfied
with the start of harvesting,
with barley yielding almost one
tonne to the acre.
Max Kuhl said it was not the
worst winter crop they have
grown. They grew 400 acres of
wheat and barley, and 600 acres of
chickpeas.
An agronomist has told them
the chickpeas are “as good as anywhere.”
They are planting just 200 acres
of sorghum this year, and plan to
grow more forage crops, because
they have acquired some cattle
breeders.
Some of this forage will be on
chickpea land, to get a cover over
the land.
Money for groups and individuals to farm smarter
Most of the grants
will be multi-year
grants of between
$250,000 and $4 million
across the Darling
Downs to put in place
new and innovative
sustainable land management
practices,
which protect and improve
the condition of
soils, vegetation and
biodiversity.
“These Smart Farming
Partnerships will
support the development,
trialling and implementation
of next
generation farming and
forestry practices,” Dr
McVeigh said.
“The grants will help
groups of organisations
to come up with, or take
advantage of the next
great idea, the benefits
of which can be shared
across the community
and the world.
“Having healthy and
productive soils, biodiversity
and vegetation
will benefit farmers,
communities and consumers.
The Darling
Downs has always been
known for its innovation
in the field of agriculture
and I am sure
the next ‘big’ idea is just
around the corner.
“Applying sustainable
land and water
management practices
on the ground and harnessing
local knowledge
is delivering tangible
environmental and
financial benefits to our
communities and farm
businesses—that is why
the government has invested
$1 billion in the
future of Landcare.
“I know first-hand
that farmers in Groom
are innovators, and the
government is supporting
that innovative
thinking to help local
farmers continue to
farm smarter, not harder.”
“I encourage interested
parties to get in
touch with my office to
find out more about the
Smart Farming Partnerships
and how to
apply.”
The first phase
was: The National
Landcare Program
Phase 1 which ran from
July 2014 to June 2018,
and the Australian
Government invested
$1 billion to continue
its longstanding commitment
to delivering
on-ground biodiversity
and sustainable agriculture
outcomes that benefit
our community and
environment.
EVERYDAY SCIENCE with JAMES McKAY
Coal mining and the Great Barrier Reef
The world's coral reefs are
currently being impacted by
bleaching from warmer oceans,
rising sea waters and ocean acidification
caused by atmospheric
carbon dioxide 2
forming carbonic
acid in water.
Charlie Veron was the chief
scientist at the Australian Institute
of Marine Sciences, and is
considered by many to be Australia's
leading expert on the
Great Barrier Reef.
He is often referred to as the
godfather of coral. Charlie has
participated in 67 major diving
expeditions to all of the coral
reefs in the world and has named
a staggering 20 per cent of the
world's coral species. I have
noticed that in the recent discussions
about energy and also mining
in the Toowoomba region
the views of scientists are often
not mentioned, which prompted
me to phone Charlie last week
and ask him three questions.
“We have a coal mine in
our region, Acland Coal Mine.
Many people are calling for the
expansion of the mine.
"It is often said we need coal
because it provides jobs and we
need reliable electricity.
"What are your thoughts on
this?”
Charlie: “Coal doesn’t provide
jobs. It takes away jobs.
"The Great Barrier Reef has
a seven billion dollar a year industry
and has vastly more jobs
than any coal mine could ever
have. We should have reliable
electricity.
"With all the warnings we’ve
been given regarding the reliability
of electricity the federal
government has ignored these
and done nothing.
"The issue must be faced, but
not at the expense of destroying
the world’s coral reefs.”
“Your expertise is the Great
Barrier Reef.
"What will happen to the reef
if we continue to mine coal and
burn fossil fuels?
Charlie: “Coal powered the industrial
revolution and now it is
powering climate change more
than any other single source.
"If we continue on the path
we are on the Great Barrier Reef
could be utterly destroyed within
two decades.”
“What are your thoughts on
climate change generally?
Charlie: “I’m very worried
about climate change.
"In fact, I think it is going to
be the biggest single factor in
human history, to have an impact
on mankind and the planet.
"I am very worried that my
children are going to be facing a
world in turmoil.”
