9: The Chapter about Wickedness – 57<br />

Kāsāvakaṇṭhā bahavo pāpadhammā asaññatā,<br />

Many wearing the monastic robe around their necks are wicked, unrestrained,<br />

pāpā pāpehi kammehi nirayaṁ te upapajjare. [307]<br />

the wicked through their wicked deeds re-arise in the underworld.<br />

Ekassa caritaṁ seyyo, natthi bāle sahāyatā,<br />

It is better to live alone, there can be no friendship with a fool,<br />

eko care na ca pāpāni kay i rā,<br />

one should live alone and not do wicked things,<br />

appossukko mātaṅgaraññe va nāgo. [330]<br />

unconcerned like a solitary elephant in the forest.<br />

Sukhaṁ yāva jarā sīlaṁ, sukhā saddhā patiṭṭhitā,<br />

Virtuous conduct till old age is good, the establishing of faith is good,<br />

sukho paññāya paṭilābho, pāpānaṁ akaraṇaṁ sukhaṁ. [333]<br />

the acquisition of wisdom is good, doing nothing wicked is good.<br />

Bāhitapāpo ti brāhmaṇo,<br />

Warding off wickedness one is called a brahmin,<br />

samacar i yā samaṇo ti vuccati,<br />

one living austerely is said to be an ascetic,<br />

pabbājayam-attano malaṁ<br />

* because of driving forth (all) stain from oneself<br />

tasmā pabbajito ti vuccati. [388]<br />

one is said to be one who has gone forth.
