26: The Chapter about Brahmins – 144<br />
Pubbenivāsaṁ yo vedī, saggāpāyañ-ca passati,<br />
Whoever knows their former lives, and sees heaven and the downfall,<br />
atho jātikkhayaṁ patto, abhiññāvosito muni,<br />
and has attained birth’s destruction, the sage, accomplished in deep knowledge,<br />
sabbavositavosānaṁ, tam-ahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. [423]<br />
who is accomplished in all accomplishments, that one I say is a brahmin.<br />

The Chapter about Brahmins, the Twenty-Sixth<br />
Alaṅkato ce pi samaṁ careyya,<br />
Even if he were to adorn himself,<br />
<strong><strong>Dhamma</strong>pada</strong>ṁ Niṭṭhitaṁ<br />
<strong>Dhamma</strong> <strong>Verses</strong> is Finished<br />
Related Verse from the <strong><strong>Dhamma</strong>pada</strong><br />
santo danto niyato brahmacārī,<br />
(but) is peaceful, trained, settled, spiritual,<br />
sabbesu bhūtesu nidhāya daṇḍaṁ,<br />
and has put aside the stick towards all beings,<br />
so brāhmaṇo so samaṇo sa bhikkhu. [142]<br />
he is a brahmin, an ascetic, a monastic.
