Travelling
A 15-year-old birthday
in Disneyw orld
“The dream came true! Knowing the magical world of
Disney is not only a dream for children. In May, 2017, I was
able to make my dream come true with my family, also
celebrating my daughter's 15th birthday in the fantastic
show of Magic Kingdom. It was wonderful, I have no
words to explain. Besides the experience, I had the chance
to put my English in use and practice all the learning that I
took from The House School.”
Bay Lake, Flórida, EUA
Joyce Oliveira / Danilo Pires
Fun facts about Disney!
1. Walt Disney World Resort encompasses 30,500 acres,
making it approximately the same size as San Francisco.
2. When Disney's Magic Kingdom Park first opened its
doors on October 1, 1971, adult admission cost $3.50.
3. The opening day crowd at Disney's Magic Kingdom Park
was approximately 10,000 guests.
4. Cinderella Castle is the tallest structure in Disney's
Magic Kingdom Park at 189 feet, followed by Space
Mountain at 183 feet.
5. The Haunted Mansion uses state-of-the-art Omnimover
vehicles called “Doom Buggies.”

What did you think about English before
starting the course? And after starting it,
do you still think the same?
“I used to think that English was
very difficult, with a lot of complex
grammatical aspects that I would
have to memorize. But after
starting the course, I realized that
English is much easier than
Portuguese; we just have to keep
practicing and the language will
be natural and automatic.”
Rodolfo Mihara, 24, psychologist
“I thought it was necessary and
very nice, because if I understood
Portuguese then, I needed to
study English now. English is used
so much in our country.”
Ines M C Santos, 57,
Campos Salles
“Hello my friends. This year I went to the United
States. I have been to New York, Washington and
Miami and I have some very interesting things to
tell you. If I hadn't learned how to speak English, I
would have experienced a hurricane.
I started my trip in New York, where there are
many places to go and many cool things to do. That was not my first time
there, but New York is so full of attractions that you can go there many
times and it is never boring.
After there, I went to Washington, where I tried to speak with Mr. Trump,
but he didn't answer the bell at the White House. Probably he was busy; I
understood. But, what happened in Miami was not so nice. Exactly the
day I arrived there (Monday, September 4th), the news about the
hurricane 'Irma' became worse and people got crazy. On Tuesday, the gas
stations had no fuel to sell anymore; there was no food or water to buy at
the supermarkets; something insane. And I felt really worried when on
Tuesday midnight I received an email from American Airlines telling me
that my flight to return to Brazil could be cancelled. It would be on that
next Friday. Then, I turned on my computer and tried to anticipate my
tickets to Wednesday. But the company site was frozen, probably
because of the excess of attempts. Then I tried to call them; the operator
answered my call and asked me what I wanted, I told her and she made it.
It seemed to be quite easy, but on the next day when I was at the hotel
lobby for my check out, I met some other Brazilian people hosted there
and they told me that they had tried to do the same thing that I had done,
but as none of them could speak English fluently, They couldn't make it.
They said that they couldn't understand the operator and she seemed to
misunderstand what they wanted, so, as she had many people to help,
she hanged up the phone. They were almost desperate, because they
would have to stay in Miami for at least one week or more with that
hurricane. All flights after Thursday were already cancelled. At the
airport, I saw many other Brazilians that had the same problem. They
tried to anticipate their flights and they couldn't do it, many of them
probably because of the lack of English. So they went to the airport to try
doing it there. But I know that would be quite difficult. All confirmed
flights were full by this time. Well, thanks to my study and practice of
good English at The House, I escaped from that difficult situation.”

So, you are looking for a place to spend your next
vacation but still don´t know where to go?? The
House News will give you a little push and show some
of the most popular places to have some fun and
learn about culture!
Why Go to Rome
Rome, the city of seven hills, enjoyed
a mythic beginning. Romulus and
Remus — twin brothers who were
nursed by a she-wolf and fathered
by a war god — reportedly founded
the Eternal City. And although
historians are a little skeptical about
this epic entry into the world, most
travelers are absolutely certain that
there is something magical about
Rome.
Why Go to Sydney
Sydney is both a laid-back beachside
town and a thriving metropolis that
boasts some of the Southern
Hemisphere's best surf, landmarks
and activities. Whether you're
looking to watch a show at the iconic
Opera House, take to the waves at
Bondi Beach or explore trendy areas
like The Rocks and Darling Harbour,
Sydney features something for
everyone
Why Go to Porto
P o r t o h a s l o n g b e e n a h o t
destination for wine lovers — it's the
go-to place to find the best of that
sweet, tasty port wine. But this city
by the sea has more to offer than
wine. Porto (or Oporto, as it's
sometimes called) is an attractive
European mini-metropolis on
Portugal's northwestern coast
where travelers can get their fill of
culture and the outdoors.
Why Go to London
The English writer Samuel Johnson
famously said, "You find no man, at
all intellectual, who is willing to leave
London. No, Sir, when a man is tired
of London, he is tired of life; for there
is in London all that life can afford."
More than two centuries have
passed since Johnson's era, but his
words still ring true.
Why Go to Paris
The City of Light draws millions of
v i s i t o rs e v e r y ye a r w i t h i t s
unforgettable ambiance. Of course,
the divine cuisine and vast art
collections deserve some of the
credit as well. The gentle River Seine
rambles through the city, flanked by
stately museums and centuries-old
churches.
Why Go to New York City
Cool, cosmopolitan, crowded,
constantly evolving … the Big Apple
blends big city splendor with smalltown
charm. Amid Gotham's iconic
l a n d m a r k s a n d t o w e r i n g
skyscrapers, you'll experience a
vibrant culture permeating each of
the city's distinctive neighborhoods
and boroughs.

The best professions
around the w orld
Nowadays, the world market is opened to every kind of area where
the professionals can express their abilities freely. However, this
freedom has caused a problem: some of the main careers that
support the society are lacking mostly in the professional scenery of
the best living places all around the world. Check them out and
surprise yourself:
1. Software Developer
Software is quite literally taking over the world. As the role of computers
continues to expand, so does the demand for people to build the software we
rely so heavily on. It is now the most in demand profession around the world.
2. Engineers
Engineers are wanted universally. And we're talking electronics engineers,
civil engineers, engineering managers, mechanical engineers, industrial
engineers – the list could go on. Why? Because there is an increasing demand
for engineers to create and build high-quality systems.
3. Doctors and medical practitioners
There can never be too many doctors given their skills have the ability to save
millions of lives every year. But they are still needed all over the world. From
Ireland to Japan, pretty much every country you can think of is constantly
seeking new doctors.
4. Accountants
Like actuaries, accountants are in high demand due to their statistical and
technical knowledge. They can also be paid an absolute fortune if
successful, but there just aren't enough of them out there. Most positions
are available in Europe, South America and Asia.

SPEAK UP
“Speak Up is a
great class
because it is
possible to
create our
speech topics
and our main
benefit is the
interaction
Vinicius
Florentino
“The Speak
Up is a very
interesting
class because
you need to
solve
problems and
end up
meeting
different
people and
subjects. We
also force
ourselves to
speak a lot,
and that's
always cool.”
G. Andrade
“My
experience
with the Speak
good because I
spoke with
knew them a
Liliam Silva
“This is what I
am searching
for my
professional
life. A didactic
and useful
class, that
encourages us
to seek always
more our
goals.”
Alexandre Silva
“I liked the
concept of this
different class
because it is a
challenge for
us. In the first
exercise we
created a
strategy for a
new company
and presented
it in front of
the class.”
Lucas da Silva
Brioschi
“The Speak Up
experience is
very useful to
learn because
you need to
express ideas
and thoughts.”
Lucas Rangel
Cecconi
“I do enjoy
Speak Up
classes. They
are very useful
to practice and
enhance our
speaking and
pronunciation
as well.”
Andreia Avila
Soares Oliveira
“The Speak Up
class is a very
interesting and
useful class. Its
themes make
the students
think and get
into a
brainstorming
to reach a final
idea. It's a
fusion of
Speaking class
and Show Off
class.
Caio Cesar Q.
Gomes, Shin
“Speak Up
class is a
perfect class
for improving
our speech.
The proposal
of a high level
conversation
is really good
for the
students.”
Natália Ap.
Junqueira,
Resh
“The Speak
Up class is a
very difficult
class, but it's
one of the
best because
the students
need to think
and
sometimes
improvise to
solve the
problem
proposed.”
William C.
Gomes, Teth
“I like this type
of class because
it stimulates
our
conversation.
For me, it is
difficult to go in
front of the
class, but I
know that is
very
important.”
Larissa Bueno
Tofani, Resh
“I like to talk in
front of the
class, it's good
to discuss
about different
topics. These
topics can't be
so technical
and they need
to be easy to
discuss.”
Priscila R.
Câmara, Tzade
“I think it is a
good class to
help us to
develop our
abilities,
especially
speaking and
creative
thinking. We
need to talk to
our groups and
be brave to
speak in front
of the class.”
PROFICIENCY
TESTS
Sooner or lat er,
Jéssica Bruschi
A proficiency test measures a learner's level of language. It can
be compared with an achievement test, which evaluates a
learner's understanding of specific material, a diagnostic test,
which identifies areas to work on, and a prognostic test, which
tries to predict a learner's ability to complete a course or take an
exam. Proficiency tests are uncommon within the classroom
but very frequent as the end aim (and motivation) of language
learning.
Example
IELTS, TOEFL, TEAP, Michigan, Cambridge are examples of
proficiency tests.
A good preparation course is always necessary for a good
performance in a proficiency test. The House school offers
preparation courses for the TOEFL IBT, TOEFL ITP and TEAP.
TEAP EXPERIENCE
“My experience with The House School was very fast, but
extremely efficient. I came to the school for the TEAP
proficiency preparation for the Master´s Degree Program, but
there wasn't time to really prepare myself. The coordination
and the teachers received me and made a scheme of VIP classes
according to my disposition.
During my classes, I paid attention and was totally focused on
my goal to absorb all the content that the teacher was passing to
me. I had access to a great content of exercises for homework as
the classes were more dynamic. At the end of my experience of
only three classes, I obtained a 62-point TEAP certificate of
proficiency, which enabled me to enroll in the Academic
Master's Degree.
I recommend The House School to all people, mostly those who
seek a quick and practical course, just as I needed and
succeeded. Congratulations to all those involved in the
wonderful work and progress that is The House School.”
A trip to Asia – from receptionist Beatriz Bisson
Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Philippines, Malaysia and
Thailand
I spent a year and a half in Asia working as a model. I
had the opportunity to know countries like
Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Philippines, Malaysia and
Thailand. At first it was a bit complicated, because I did
not have enough English and not enough people to
help me communicate. Within some time I met some
Brazilians who were in the same agency that I was
working for, and they began to help me formulate
more concrete sentences, and in time, things got
better.
English was extremely important to communicate with new friends, with whom I have contact
until today. With clients, and makeup artists to better understand what was being asked by
them in the pagents and photos and also for locomotion and finding locations and places.
Martial Arts around the World: Brazil (Capoeira)
Brazil is a very colorful country that has also been one of the worlds leading exporters of
culture, in large part due to its fusion of Native American, Latin and African roots. One national
treasure from this nation that has gone on to garner international acclaim: the Afro-Brazilian
dancing/martial art of Capoeira. Capoeira is a beautiful practice that is synonymous with smiling
faces, dance, flexibility and athleticism. Today it is embraced and practiced all over the world; from
the streets of rural Brazil, to lavish studio lofts in major urban centers like New York City, to the Atlantic
beaches in countries like Angola to festivals across Japan. Capoeira has become a source of happiness
and camaraderie for many, a remarkable outcome considering its dark past.
Origins
Between the 15th and 19th centuries, the business of human trafficking across the Atlantic was at its
apex, and numerous innocent people from across West Africa: many of whom spoke different
languages and had different cultures, were transported to transit hubs like this one were they were
sorted, grouped without regard for their cultural differences, and similar to the death trains during
Germany's Holocaust were eventually shipped across the Atlantic to either die or begin new lives as
“slaves.” Portugal, once heavily involved in this business, would be responsible for smuggling
approximately four million people to their various colonies, including Brazil. These unfortunate souls
were infused into the Brazilian/Portuguese labor machine whose main purpose was to support sugar
cane processing and production (slaves were also used in other industries e.g. coffee, glass making,
etc). Capoeira is widely believed to have been born out of the frustrations of this era, and similar to the
American Hip-Hop movement in its earlier days, incorporated many aspects of dance and storytelling
in response to the severe oppression and seemingly insurmountable marginalization faced by the
captives in their new home. Not surprisingly, it is not known who exactly came up with the idea for
Capoeira. This makes sense as there were little to no written accounts from slaves in that era.
Capoeira would go on to play a significant role in many resistance movements across Brazil up until
until the abolition of slavery in that region in 1888. Post slavery, Capoeira would face persecution by
the colonial Brazilian government, and was deemed illegal up until the 1920s. Today, Capoeira has
emerged from its dark past to become a global phenomenon and a source of pride for Brazil.
English JOKE
«Perfect Hearing"
This joke is about three elderly (older) men
who think they can hear perfectly. What do
you think?
“Three (1) retirees, each with (2) a hearing
loss, were playing golf one fine March day.
One (3) remarked to the other, (4) "Windy,
isn't it?"
«No," the second man replied, "it's
Thursday."
And the third man (5) chimed in, "So am I.
Let's have a beer."
(1) elderly people who have finished working
(they have "retired")
(2) they can not hear as well as they could when
they were younger
(3) he said something about what he saw
(4) there is a lot of wind
(5) he said happily
Explanation: The second man thought
"Windy" was Wednesday (so he replied "No,
it's Thursday") then the third man thought
"Thursday" was "thirsty" (so he thought of
drinking some beer!). I guess their hearing is
not as good as they think!
2017 is a year wide open with opportunities for Sagittarians. There is plenty of
energy that will prompt you to dig in and make tremendous progress.
There are also countless doors opening to new, previously unconsidered projects,
pursuits, and partnerships. Forget those preconceived notions of what you should do
or need to do. This year, you can do just about anything.
The Sun-Pluto conjunction in Capricorn in January keeps your attention on career
and public pursuits. You're not limited to being intense only about work, though. If
you have a creative or other passion, you can get intense about that, too.
2017 starts with Mercury retrograde in Capricorn but the planet goes direct in
Sagittarius. Work steady but aim high. The fourth and final Mercury retrograde is
entirely in Sagittarius. Saturn spends the year in Sagittarius so Mercury's extra time
there in December only improves your grasp on whatever situation is developing
around you.
When the Sun enters Sagittarius in November, planets are scattered around the
sky. There is a Mercury-Saturn conjunction, however, that sharpens your keen mind
and tempers your social activities.
The asteroid Ceres is also transiting the Lunar North Node in glorious Leo.
Nurturing yourself and your loved ones has never been easier or more satisfying.
