Side Trips
My husband and I headed out of town
on a spur-of-the-moment decision Saturday
night. We were getting onto the
bypass south of Sheldon when he realized my
car had only a quarter
tank of fuel.
We did a few errands
in Sioux City, then
headed back north,
stopping in LeMars
to eat, but completely
forgetting about the
fuel gauge.
On the north side of
LeMars the “low fuel
warning” light came
on. Jeff began contemplating
how far we
could get, and as the
miles ticked past concluded, “If we can just
make it to the cattle lot on the south edge of
Sheldon...”.
When the lights of the cattle lot became
visible I joked that we were going to make
it. The words had barely passed my lips
when the car began to lose power. “Are you
messing with me?” I quizzed. He assured
me he was not, and asked if I thought we
should pull over or simply coast as far as
possible.
My advice was to keep coasting to the off
ramp, as I reached for my phone to call our
daughter. But he kept the car on the road as
we passed the ramp, which caused me even
greater concern. I didn’t want to be stranded
on the side of a busy highway when there
was a perfectly good ramp right there.
Just then the car “miraculously” regained
power and we were off.
I was so perturbed in that moment of
realization that I threw my phone to the
ground.

The Primghar Community
Playhouse is rehearsing for its
annual children’s play, which this year
will be “Willa Wonkie and the College
Tour (Chocolate Not Included).”
Performances will be held at 7
p.m. Friday-Saturday, Nov. 10-11, at
the Primghar Community Building.
Tickets are $5 per adult and $3 per
student; they will be sold at the door.
Playwright E.S. Follen of New York
City wrote the play, which is a parody
of the 1971 film, “Willy Wonka & the
Chocolate Factory.”
“Charlie is a girl in this play. She
comes from a poor family and she
wants to go to college,” said lead director
Jeremy Rohwer of Archer. “Five
kids win a silver ticket to tour the
university and they each meet their
demise, much like the Gene Wilder
film.”
Rohwer also is secretary for the
Primghar Community Playhouse
Board of Directors. He has a history of
acting and this will be his directorial
debut.
He was involved in theatre while he
attended South O’Brien High School
in Paullina, from which he graduated
in 2002.
“They asked me if I wanted to be in
a play. I read the script and I enjoyed
it,” Rohwer said. “It’s a hobby. It’s fun
to entertain people.”
Rohwer then acted while attending
Iowa Lakes Community College in
Emmetsburg.
After graduating from Iowa Lakes
in 2006, he had been away from the
stage until joining the Primghar Community
Playhouse board in 2015.
Amber Campbell of Hartley and
board president Sara Dolphin of Hartley
are director’s assistants to Rohwer
for this play.
The cast of the play will feature 25
area youth from Hartley, Paullina,
Primghar and Sanborn who are in
second-eighth grade.
“I think they will gain confidence in
themselves,” Campbell said. “It helps
build character working with kids of
different age groups.”
They have been rehearsing 6:30-8
p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the
Primghar Community Building for
about a month.
“These kids have put in an awful
lot of time. It would be fun to have
a room full of people to support the
kids,” Rohwer said. “We are offering
something the school district doesn’t,
and we’re reaching kids from other
school districts.”
The kids’ participation does not
stop at reciting lines.
They also are designing props and
preparing songs.
“I like how we are all getting to
know each other,” said Ryleigh Warnke,
a fifth-grader at South O’Brien
Elementary in Primghar who will be
playing the parts of an eagle and a college
representative.
“I like that I get to hang out with
the Uni Loonies,” said Liam Kelley,
another South
O’Brien Elementary

Caravan du Nord

Music is on the way to
Worthington, MN.
A trio of musical acts from
around Minnesota will be making
their way to Worthington for a day of
free music workshops, socializing and
a concert on Saturday, Nov. 11.
The event is entitled Caravan du
Nord and will feature Chastity Brown,
Kari Arnett and Bill Keitel.
The free music workshops start at 4
p.m. and are followed by a social hour
at 6 p.m. and finally the
concert at 7 p.m.
Caravan du Nord is a
movement that will be
traveling to lots of other
stops in Minnesota.
“This is the 7th Annual
Caravan du Nord tour and
the first time we’ve come
to Worthington! The goal
is to bring a diverse mix
of regional acts, emerging
bands and music industry
professionals to towns
across greater Minnesota
for a day of workshops,
networking and performances,”
said Ellen
Stanley, the executive
director of the Minnesota
Music Coalition.
The events are
thanks to support
from the Minnesota
State Arts Board and
funding from the
Legacy Amendment.
“Thanks to that support, we are able
to bring big-name artists to venues
that might not otherwise have the
budget to cover performance fees and
travel,” Stanley said. “We also provide
opportunities for local artists to connect
with them and learn professional
and creative skills through the free
workshops and social hour that happens
before the concert. We also hope
it will introduce audiences to new
Minnesota artists.”
Each of the Caravan du Nord concerts
have a different lineup of artists,
which is worked out with the venues
themselves.
“The MMC staff works with the venues
and local presenting partners to
identify a headliner that the venue has
not previously showcased but they
feel that the audiences would enjoy,”
Stanley said. “Similarly, we rely very
heavily on our local partners to advise
on a good local act who would benefit
from sharing the bill with an artist or
band that has a national or international
profile. Then the MMC identifies
an emerging act from the Twin
Cities or another part of Minnesota to
be a part of the bill.”
The lineup for the Worthington
concert will include Bill Keitel, who
is a Worthington native. Kari Arnett
will also be on stage. Arnett grew up
in Wisconsin and started playing and
singing at a young age. She taught herself
how to play piano and in her early
20s she taught herself to play guitar.

The headliner is Chastity Brown.
Brown is based in Minnesota with
roots in Tennessee.
“Chastity grew up surrounded by
country and soul music. In the full
gospel church of her childhood, she
played saxophone and drums and
found her singing voice and a passion
for music. Her first show was in
Knoxville, TN, and then it was on to
Minneapolis,” according to her bio.
Over the years she’s been featured
on NPR’s “Favorite Sessions,” “CMT,”
“American Songwriter,” and more.
She’s toured across the United States
and abroad. She’s appeared on the
show “Later...with Jools Holland.”
She also toured with Ani Difranco for
much of 2016. F

Songs for the veterans
Glenn Henriksen and friends put on a show at PLAC
Glenn Henriksen has played
many shows over the years in
the Iowa Great Lakes. An accomplished
pianist and organist,
Henriksen’s Christmas concerts at
Pearson Lakes Art Center have always
been quite popular.
Now he’s adding Veterans Day to
his calendar of concerts.
Henriksen and a few friends will
perform a special Veterans Day Salute
on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
The concert will take place in the
Lauridsen Performing Arts Theater at
the Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji.
Tickets are $25 for non-members,
$15 for members and $5 for students.
Veterans and active duty military
have free admission.
“This is the first time he’s done a
Veterans Day show here as far as I
know,” said Amanda Schindler, performing
arts director.
“With our performing arts committee
we discussed the shows he’s
done, like the Christmas shows, and
thought why not try one for Veterans
Day. There are always a lot of parties
and things going on for Christmas but
not as much for Veterans Day.”
The friends joining Henriksen for
the performance are Sheryl Scott Bahr
and Bill Hansen on vocals and Mark
Kurseth on drums.
“Sheryl has performed in the Lakes
area and has a bluesy, jazzy feel, and
Mark is the drummer from Glenn’s
band, Galaxy,” Schindler said.
“He’s putting together a real nice
show for us. His whole personality
is happy and upbeat. Being local he
has a good following around here —
people love to support local acts, local
bands.”
Judging from his past Christmas
shows at the Pearson Lakes Art Center,
Schindler is expecting both a great
turnout and fantastic performance.
“I’ve seen two Christmas shows and
he’s always got some shenanigans of
some sort, stories to tell and some
audience interaction. I’m sure it will
be a lot of fun,” Schindler said.
And it’s also a fun way to honor the
men and women who have served,
and currently serve, in the armed
forces.
“It’s just one way for us as an art
center, Glenn as a performer, and the
community at large, to say thanks
to our veterans for their service,”
Schindler said. F

return of a Spencer alum.
Victor & Penny and the
Loose Change Orchestra
will be performing at 7:30
p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10 at
the Spencer Community
Theatre as SPARC’s first
concert of the season.
Victor and Penny are
actually Jeff Freling and
Erin McGrane. They have
been playing together
since 2010.
McGrane is actually
a Spencer High School
alum.
“Erin is a native of
Spencer so she came back
and did the alumni concert
a couple of years ago
and everybody enjoyed
them so much. They are
just really talented,” said
Rolf Mosbo, a member of
the SPARC group. “It’s a
good thing we are bringing
them back so that the
people who didn’t see
them last time will get a
chance and others who did see them
can come back.”
McGrane is on ukulele and vocals,
Freling is on guitar and vocals. Sometimes
Victor & Penny team up with

“The band instructor at Spencer
High School is also a graduate of
Spencer High School,” Mosbo said.
“When Kurt Schwarck wants to have
fun he plays with the Dick Bauman
Big Band during the summer so we’re
going to bring them to Spencer and
feature Mr. Schwarck on the trumpet.”
On April 7, 2018, SPARC will host
the third visit by Shattered Glass.
Spencer will actually be their last stop
on a four-city tour of Iowa.
The last SPARC concert of the season
will take place on June 7, 2018
and will feature the band Pony Creek.
Their music style is described by Mosbo
as folk, blues, country and rock.
As much as he’s looking forward to
the rest of the season, Mosbo is just as
excited for SPARC’s first concert.
“I’m just excited about the chance
to see them again. They are really nice
folks and Erin was really excited to be
coming back last time. It’s kind of a
warm, fuzzy thing,” Mosbo said. F

It’s never too early to get a head
start on some holday shopping.
Whether that holiday is Thanksgiving
or Christmas or New Year’s Eve,

be plenty of opportunity to shop for
everyone on your list during Women’s
Okoboji Weekend.
Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 10-11,
will see yet another vendor show and
shopping extravaganza at the Dickinson
County Expo Center, as well as
several other events for folks visiting
the area.
“We’ve got a great variety of vendors
we’ve been able to bring every year,”
said Kristen Summers, director of
sales for Community First Broadcasting.
“You’ve got all different types of
shopping — clothing, jewelry, and
much more — and top it off with
health and wellness.”
One of the big draws each year is the
Hy-Vee Holiday Showcase.
“You can sample cakes, wines, appetizers,
meat and cheese, and they
show off their catering offerings. It
attracts a lot of people and is always
very well-received,” Summers
said.
Summers noted that people
come year after year ready to
shop and have a good time.
People come from as far as
Sioux City, Sioux Falls and
Algona for the entire day, or
even the entire weekend.
It’s not just shopping enthusiasts
ready to bust down
the door each year.
There is actually a waiting
list for vendors to get in to the
popular annual event, which
was already full by June.
“We have great vendors, a
diverse group that come every
year as well as a few new
ones each time. We’ve actually
made it a little bigger this year,” Summers
said.
If that’s not incentive enough, there
will be bottles of wine given away to
the first 50 people through the door,
as well as thousands of dollars in
prizes up for grabs.
This year there will also be a demo
on cool sculpting.
“People always wonder about these
cosmetic procedures so that will be
fun to check out,” Summers said.
In addition to the shopping extravganza,
there will be open houses
at several stores as well as a Holiday
Style Show at the Great Lakes Mall.
Ingvall Real Estate Firm will host a
tour of homes. Okoboji Commons
will host complimentary yoga, as well
as WOW cocktails and small bites at
Common Tasting Room.

From Icky Animals to Nature’s Blessings, this fall’s
Nature Tots programs at the Dickinson County
Nature Center will be full of fun.
“Nature Tots for the next couple of months will be
related to the upcoming seasons and holidays,” said
environmental education coordinator Bryanna Kuhlman.
The program for ages 2-5 is held the second
Wednesday of each month year-round. The Nov. 8
session will be on Nature’s Blessings, and the Dec. 13
program will break out of the seasonal pattern to Discover
Dinos, hatch dinosaur eggs and look for fossils.
Nature Tots is designed for toddlers to experience
nature, to have fun and to learn to be curious.
“If they start young, hopefully they’ll grow up to
care about nature,” Hansen said. “I’m excited to see
the kids get excited, to get them excited about nature.”
The 10:30 a.m. sessions of the programs fill up
quickly, but a 1:30 p.m. class was also added this year
to accommodate more children. Parents and guardians
can call 712-336-6352 to pre-register for either
time slot.

“Museum” onstage at
Northwestern

performed in the England Theatre of the DeWitt
Theatre Arts Center.
Set in a museum gallery in the 1970s, “Museum”
takes place on the final day of an exhibition
by three contemporary artists. Visitors wander
through the exhibit throughout the day, musing on
the art and sometimes vexing the guards charged
with keeping it secure.
Their comments and behavior reveal their diverse
levels of art experience and appreciation,
their reactions ranging from guffaws to awe.
Multiple roles will be played by many of the 18
cast members. The cast includes Charlie Hubbard,
Orange City; Kit Fynaardt, Alton; and Chris Miksch
from LeMars.
Tickets for “Museum” are $8 for adults and $4
for students and are available starting Oct. 30 for
