ALFAPARF MILANO IS teaming up with<br />

Down Syndrome <strong>Ireland</strong> to launch a new<br />

employment programme for adults with<br />

Down syndrome. The Beauty In All Its<br />

Forms programme offers adults with the<br />

genetic disorder the opportunity to train as<br />

hairdressing assistants. With nearly 70 per<br />

cent of assistants in the four-month pilot<br />

scheme securing long term employment,<br />

the programme has now been rolled out in<br />

selected ALFAPARF Milano salons across<br />

<strong>Ireland</strong>. John Mulligan (pictured above,<br />

back row second left) from Kilmacow near<br />

Waterford gained employment following<br />

the pilot. He said: “The training was great. I<br />

learned lots – how to fold towels, cleaning and<br />

washing hair.” David Donnellan, managing<br />

director of ALFAPARF Milano, added: “Our<br />

objective is to make our customers look and<br />

feel more beautiful, every day. We recognise<br />

that beauty comes in many forms, and it is<br />

this promotion of diversity and inclusion that<br />

lies at the heart of this initiative.”<br />

<strong>Ireland</strong> takes<br />

gold at AHS<br />

CHRIS O’RIORDAN of Sean Taaffe Hair and Beauty has scooped the<br />

Mens’ International Visionary Award at the 2017 Alternative Hair Show in<br />

London. Now celebrating its 35th year, the charity event saw 20 teams from<br />

across the globe each present a three-minute show inspired by the theme<br />

‘Utopia’. <strong>Ireland</strong> was represented by Hugh Campbell, who filled The Royal<br />

Albert Hall with his dark and beautiful vision. Throughout the night, hair<br />

appeared in every shade imaginable and was sculpted into gravity-defying,<br />

intricate shapes. This year’s event raised £280,626 (€312,357) for the Fighting<br />

Leukaemia Fund, a charity founded by Tony and Maggie Rizzo to help support<br />

children suffering from the condition. Other winners on the night included<br />

Lucian Busuioc of Romania, who took home the Cut & Colour award, while<br />

Jose Garcia Benitez of Spain was the Avant-Garde winner.<br />

CREATIVE <strong>HEAD</strong> UNITED its 2017 winners for the fabulous annual Most Wanted and It List<br />

Awards Winners’ Dinner. London’s Balthazar restaurant was the setting for a sparkling evening of<br />

conversation, discussion and celebration, peppered with plenty of reminiscing about September’s<br />

awesome Grand Final. Owners of Lloyds Hair and winners of the Most Wanted Supreme Team,<br />

Danielle Kennedy and Tony Heffernan, were our Irish representatives – unfortunately Exceptional<br />

Stylist Dylan Bradshaw had been grounded by storm Ophelia. Once dinner was done, <strong>Creative</strong><br />

<strong>HEAD</strong> UK editor Amanda Nottage grabbed the opportunity to probe our winners on key industry<br />

issues. The liveliest debate centred around the sprawling topic of hairdressing and social media<br />

and there was plenty of insight from multiple award-winner Sophia Hilton, who discussed her<br />

campaign to balance both staff and her clientele’s expectations.<br />

Invest in the team.<br />

Money spent on education<br />

is never wasted. The more<br />

skilled the team is, the less<br />

stress the management<br />

will have. The happier the<br />

clients are and the more<br />

revenue coming in will also<br />

feed straight back into the<br />

professional satisfaction of<br />

the team – it’s a business<br />

virtue circle.<br />

Discounting doesn’t<br />

work. It weakens your<br />

brand’s reputation. I prefer<br />

to add value and introduce<br />

new services such as<br />

treatments, products and<br />

beauty services.<br />

Team bonding outside<br />

the salon makes all the<br />

difference. Days out of,<br />

or away from, the salon can<br />

improve morale and give<br />

valuable insight.<br />

Delegate. One person can’t<br />

do everything and if they are<br />

doing it all then the chances<br />

are that they are not doing it<br />

right. People love to be a part<br />

of success, so involve them!<br />

It’s amazing what you can<br />

learn when people pool their<br />

ideas and concepts.<br />

WALK-IN SALONS<br />

WILL YOU TAKE THE LEAP?<br />

THE TRADITIONAL APPOINTMENT salon<br />

isn’t disappearing anytime soon, but some<br />

salon owners have foregone the certainty of<br />

bookings and planning and opted for a more<br />

relaxed, open-door system. Once, walk-in<br />

policies were confined to barbers, but no longer.<br />

Hermans salon group operates three<br />

successful walk-in salons in Dublin. Owner<br />

Greg Koster believes that flexibility is key.<br />

“We have a large and loyal clientele that<br />

likes not having to commit to making an<br />

appointment; clients come at a time that<br />

suits them,” he explains. “Many find that<br />

even if there is a wait, it’s a shorter wait than<br />

they’ve experienced in salons where they did<br />

have an appointment. We never have noshows<br />

costing us money and we don’t have<br />

one client’s late arrival or change of mind<br />

about their service impact other customers<br />

throughout the day.”<br />

Danielle Kennedy, owner of Lloyds Hair<br />

and winner of the Most Wanted Supreme<br />

Team Award, has a walk-in salon and a<br />

traditional salon just three minutes apart.<br />

She believes that the greatest benefit of<br />

running a walk-in salon is that it brings<br />

something new to the market. “With a walk-in<br />

salon, we are able to offer our clients a totally<br />

different experience that sets us apart from<br />

our competitors,” she says.<br />

But Danielle has found that there are<br />

specific challenges that come with running<br />

a walk-in salon. “You need to do everything<br />

better than your competitors – have better<br />

trained staff, offer a better client experience<br />

and better customer service,” she explains.<br />

“You must wow clients with every visit so that<br />

they are prepared to wait a few minutes every<br />

time they want to get their hair cut.”<br />

Greg believes that a tightly-run crew is<br />

crucial for a walk-in salon to succeed: “It<br />

requires a large team, probably more so than<br />

in an appointment-based salon, as we need<br />

to be able to cope with surges in clients.<br />

Sometimes we may feel overstaffed, but it’s<br />

needed to deliver when it is busy. You need<br />

good team spirit as everyone needs to be<br />

prepared to get stuck-in at peak times.”<br />

There is little room for error – get it wrong<br />

and you risk losing clients and money. “If you<br />

have too few staff, then your clients have to<br />

wait too long and won’t return. If you have too<br />

many staff and you lose too much money, the<br />

business isn’t sustainable,” says Danielle.<br />

And you may be surprised to see money<br />

going to more unusual places. “Managerial<br />

and front of house costs will always be higher<br />

than in an appointment salon, as the salon<br />

effectively stems from that area,” continues<br />

Danielle. “You pump a lot of money into<br />

these areas and you can’t see a tangible<br />

return on them every week like you can with<br />

booked stylists. It takes a lot of willpower to<br />

operate a 100 per cent walk-in salon and you<br />

have to be prepared to turn clients down on a<br />

daily basis.”<br />

SABRINA HILL, OWNER OF KOPPER HAIR SALON IN CORK,<br />

REVEALS HOW GREAT EDUCATION LEADS TO SUCCESS<br />

STARTING OUT<br />

“I got into hairdressing by accident,”<br />

says Sabrina Hill, owner of Kopper<br />

Hair Studio in Cork. “I was supposed<br />

to go and study fine art at college in<br />

Dublin. However, as part of our school<br />

curriculum I went on work experience at<br />

a local salon.” This placement changed<br />

everything. “I was absolutely horrified<br />

by what I saw. People were just being<br />

told they looked gorgeous and charged.<br />

I decided then that I had to change the<br />

world, one head at a time.”<br />

Art’s loss was hairdressing’s gain.<br />

Sabrina stayed on at the salon to build<br />

her skills, then was given opportunity<br />

to take over Kopper Hair in Cork.<br />

“I had only just qualified, and I started<br />

with just two other members of staff,”<br />

she says. “Then the recession hit and<br />

business wasn’t doing great. So, in 2009<br />

I decided I had to invest in training.”<br />

NEW OPPORTUNITIES<br />

Sabrina retrained over the next few<br />

years, and gained an ALFAPARF<br />

Milano Masters Colour Degree. “This<br />

completely changed my view on<br />

hairdressing – ALFAPARF Milano<br />

training programmes are so good!” she<br />

says. “I thought I knew what I was doing<br />

before, but the courses gave me the<br />

confidence to create fantastic colour and<br />

work better. You always get great results,<br />

and ALFAPARF Milano is amazing from<br />

the support point of view, too.”<br />

Sabrina’s expertise has gained her<br />

incredible recognition on social media –<br />

@superstylesabby has more than 18,100<br />

followers on Instagram. She champions<br />

healthy hair and her pictures garner<br />

hundreds of likes as she shows off what<br />

is possible with ALFAPARF Milano.<br />

LEADING THE WAY<br />

Kopper is now a thriving salon – so<br />

much so that a second branch is on the<br />

way. “Kopper is a huge success, and<br />

education is important to us. We now<br />

have 16 members of staff, and many<br />

have completed their ALFAPARF<br />

Milano Colour Masters. Our staff often<br />

go abroad for courses – one of my juniors,<br />

Jenny Connolly, was chosen for the<br />

ALFAPARF Milano Architects of Design<br />

programme, and trains all over Europe.”<br />

Sabrina is a stylist who has carved out<br />

a niche without following the traditional<br />

expectations. “I am a hairdresser who<br />

doesn’t like competitions,” she reveals.<br />

“I would love to be known as someone<br />

who didn’t go down that route, but still<br />

changed the industry. We all need to find<br />

our own paths.”<br />

Instyle turned 14 this year – so owner Triona O’Leary felt it was time to<br />

shake things up and give the salon a new look. She says: “I noticed a<br />

lot of successful salons are designed with luxury in mind – we all want<br />

this ethos at the forefront of the design process and called in Gainfort<br />

#SupremeTeam<br />

IT’S ONLY THE second year that Irish salons have entered<br />

<strong>Creative</strong> <strong>HEAD</strong>’s Most Wanted Awards, but they’ve already<br />

made their mark. This year, Lloyds Hair in Waterford was<br />

crowned Supreme Team in recognition of its incredible<br />

teamwork. And how long has it taken for Lloyds Hair to get<br />

there? Just four years.<br />

“My husband Tony and I bought a walk-in salon in Waterford<br />

four years ago. I had little experience in the industry – just<br />

six months as a salon manager, while Tony is a chartered<br />

accountant,” co-owner Danielle Kennedy explains. The<br />

prospect of running a salon with so little experience would<br />

seem daunting to most, but Danielle quickly realised she had<br />

made the right decision. “From the second I walked in the<br />

door, I fell in love with the industry and knew we could make<br />

an impact. The salon industry in our area was calling out to<br />

be re-shaped and I had a feeling that we could not only do it<br />

differently, we could also do it better than our competitors.”<br />

And Lloyds Hair has flourished – from one salon with eight<br />

members and a turnover of less than €200,000 – to three<br />

salons with a team of 56 and a turnover that’s on track for<br />

€1.4 million. So how has this been possible in such a short<br />

time? It’s all down to teamwork. “In the service industry, your<br />

people are your product – I use positive relationships and<br />

goal-setting to ensure my team is always engaged,” she says.<br />

“Success means a happy team that is passionate about Lloyds<br />

and their careers. We are not a ‘just a job’ salon. Every team<br />

member knows why they’re there and what their goals are.<br />

Everyone plays an equally important part in our success and<br />

they are all shining examples leading the way in the Irish<br />

hairdressing industry.”<br />

Communication is key for such a fast-paced salon, but<br />

Danielle makes sure it’s never too serious. Before each<br />

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME THE MOST<br />

shift the team has the Lloyds Lowdown – an informal fiveminute<br />

meeting. Then there are pizza meetings every two<br />

or three months with no agenda – they are simply a chance<br />

for team members to say what they’re thinking. There is<br />

also plenty of fun to be had as part of the Lloyds Hair team<br />

– and the Mystery Day Out is the highlight of the year. “It’s<br />

like planning a wedding,” jokes Danielle. “Nobody knows<br />

anything about the day except Tony and me – how often do<br />

you, as an adult, get a day that’s a total surprise?”<br />

This year the team hopped on the mystery bus and went to<br />

build rafts to race. After team awards – where two employees<br />

won a trip to New York and the runner-up won a Sophia Hilton<br />

course – the fun really started with a DJ and free bar! “We don’t<br />

do bonuses,” she adds. “It would be easier to just hand out<br />

cheques but that’s not us and not the business we want to be.”<br />

Since opening, Lloyds Hair has raised more than €10,000<br />

for Waterford Breast Cancer Support Group, which has<br />

provided the perfect opportunity for the team to bond as they<br />

help others. “We open on the Sunday of the October Bank<br />

Holiday weekend,” says Danielle. “The team works for free,<br />

doing blow-drys and up-styling in return for donations. They<br />

take funny pictures and videos to put on Facebook.<br />

“It has such a positive impact on the salon every year as<br />

it brings us all together and everyone is so determined to<br />

raise as much money as possible. They say it feels like<br />

Christmas Eve!”<br />

The emphasis on fun shines through the Lloyds Hair social<br />

media channels, which have grown and grown. “The team<br />

has been the driving force behind the social media success,<br />

as we realised that it’s the salon and the personalities that our<br />

followers love,” Danielle admits. “We are currently the second<br />

most followed and liked salon page in the country.”<br />

So, what does it mean to win at the most exciting industry<br />

awards, with its Supreme Team trophy at Most Wanted 2017?<br />

“There are lots of awards out there, but they’re usually either<br />

individual stylist awards or business awards,” says Danielle.<br />

“This is the most important award that we’ve ever gone for –<br />

it’s for the team members. This is their award and I couldn’t<br />

be more proud of them.”<br />

“I have put together two new packages for the festive period<br />

O Sullivan, owner of Claire’s Salon in Co. Cork. “We are<br />

and a specially selected Christmas playlist to get them in<br />

the festive mood,” says Kara McDonagh, general manager at<br />

Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty in Co. Kerry.<br />

One more word: budget. Always have a marketing budget<br />

in mind for Christmas and the New Year. Business consultant<br />

Alice Kirby of Lockhart Meyer Marketing recommends adding<br />

10 per cent extra, for any unforseen costs.<br />

You can never be too busy for social media nowadays – but<br />

you’ve got to make sure every post counts. Either block<br />

out some time to write and schedule your content in<br />

advance, or take the spontaneous route. Why not let your<br />

Charles Worthington Salons has created these three<br />

notorious for raising stress levels, and while the focus is<br />

rightly on pampering your clients, it’s important to remember<br />

the wellbeing of your staff too.<br />

Organise activities to support your team emotionally,<br />

physically and financially. Lots of salons offer yoga sessions<br />

– whether in-salon or at a local gym – to help with focus and<br />

energy. At Davey Davey, it’s all about getting active: “During<br />

November we spend each Sunday doing an activity together –<br />

this year we are going indoor climbing. We get to support each<br />

other and have a good laugh at the same time – it really brings<br />

us all together and creates a positive vibe for the busy months<br />

ahead,” says Donna McConville. And never underestimate the<br />

power of a little healthy competition.<br />

Kara McDonagh explains: “We play pass the parcel, where<br />

the parcel is a product to sell in return for a day off after the<br />

Christmas party. There’s also bingo, where each team member<br />

gets a number with every sale they make to be in with a<br />

chance of winning vouchers.”<br />

Donna agrees: “At Davey Davey, team members receive<br />

points for products and treatments sold throughout<br />

November and December. Depending on points earned,<br />

each team member receives a gift voucher for their chosen<br />

favourite shop or restaurant – and the overall winner receives<br />

a special bonus prize, too!” And remember to host a Christmas<br />

party and arrange reasonable time off for everyone, too.<br />

wrapping for your guests.”<br />

Tempt clients into spontaneous purchases with clever<br />

retail displays, visual merchandising and tactical selling.<br />

Set out “try me” tester products around the salon; create<br />

message-enhancing displays along the client’s journey<br />

and don’t forget that trial-sized products at reception<br />

make great stocking-filler impulse buys. Incentivise the<br />

team. Look at your sales from this time last year and<br />

aim to increase this by 10 per cent, says salon business<br />

consultant Carey Faulkner from Boostmysalon.co.uk.<br />

Once you have your goal, break it down into more<br />

manageable goals – in most cases it can mean just one<br />

Roundhouse in Camden, London, for the Wella Professionals TrendVision<br />

Award 2017 UK & <strong>Ireland</strong> Final. Hairdresser Patrick Cameron was joined by<br />

DJ Lauren Laverne to host a night of extraordinary hair and celebrations.<br />

Fashion-forward Toni&Guy opened the show with Prismatic, a bright and<br />

on-trend collection that meshed colour with couture. After dinner and plenty<br />

of wine, the show continued with Equal from Sassoon Academy. This fusion<br />

of hair and art celebrated individual style, with incredible cuts and colours.<br />

Sebastian Professional presented the third and final show of the evening,<br />

E-Vokative. Celebrating four decades of creativity, this atmospheric show was<br />

accompanied by a live performance from singer-songwriter of the moment,<br />

Charlotte OC. Then it was time to get down to the business of awards.<br />

Competitors showed off their hard work on the runway, and waited eagerly<br />

to find out who would be representing <strong>Ireland</strong> at the Wella Professionals<br />

Final. This year, Shauna Forman of House of Colour<br />

The stunning gala show saw Wella Professionals new<br />

colour ambassador, Andreas Kurkowitz, on stage<br />

revealing 2018 trends, as well as a British by Design<br />

opening show that celebrated the work of leading<br />

UK names such as Marc Antoni, D&J Ambrose,<br />

Sanrizz, Robert Eaton and HOB Academy. Sassoon<br />

colour legend, Annie Humphreys, received a lifetime<br />

achievement award, ahead of Sassoon Academy<br />

unveiling a stunning colour-led presentation. And<br />

then it was the moment everyone had been waiting<br />

for – Patrick Cameron returned to host the Awards<br />

grand final, with New Zealand taking home both the<br />

Color Vision and <strong>Creative</strong> Vision Platinum titles.<br />

It List Awards and with a new host at the helm – the acerbic and amazing Katherine<br />

Ryan – the night was a storming spectacle! The place was abuzz from the moment<br />

London’s Guildhall doors were flung open. Hairdressers from across the Republic<br />

of <strong>Ireland</strong> and the UK flooded the venue’s historic halls, eager to honour the best of<br />

the industry. Lloyds Hair of Waterford took home the Supreme Team trophy, while<br />
