Side Trips
Call me odd, but I enjoy home improvement
projects.
I suppose I should clarify that statement.
I don’t enjoy cleaning out gutters, or
stuffing itchy insulation
in crawl spaces and
attics. But I love how
a fresh coat of paint
spruces up a room in
just one day.
I amazed myself
a year ago when the
espresso stain I applied
to our bathroom
cabinets transformed
them from boring oak
to something pretty and
memorable.
That inspired me to
change our fireplace surround, experimenting
with chalk paint and glaze. I’ll admit that was
more intimidating, as only two people ever see
our master bathroom but the family room is
on display for anyone visiting our home.
The chalk paint experiment required
many hours of labor, and two colors of glaze to
achieve the look I wanted. Once the cabinets
were completed, though, it became obvious
that the reddish brick for the fireplace and
hearth needed to change as well.
I had watched Chip and Joanna Gaines
paint brick repeatedly on the HGTV show
“Fixer Upper,” but I felt there was no turning
back once I began to apply paint. I delayed for
several weeks and researched many different
techniques and products before I felt confident
to apply the first brush strokes.
While I’m not afraid to paint and wallpaper,
I do know my limitations.
Take a look at the Fall Fix Up pages we’ve
included in this edition and get inspired to
freshen up your home — whether you are into
DIY or prefer to call in the experts.
Halloween
Carnival in
Sheldon
Third annual party
slated for Oct. 28
double toil and
trouble; Fire burn, and
“Double,
caldron bubble.” — from
“Macbeth” by William Shakespeare.
Sheldon’s Halloween Carnival will
double this year, but it should mean
more spooky delights, not toil and
trouble. The Sheldon Chamber and
Development
Corporation
has
joined with
the Prairie
Arts Council
to serve as
full partners
for the event.
The third
annual Halloween
carnival,
which
f e a t u r e s
games, treats
and familyfriendly
fun,
will be held
on the west lawn of the Prairie Arts
Historical Park, located at 1423 Park
St. between Casey’s General Store and
Shopko, from noon-3 p.m. Saturday,
Oct. 28.
Chamber director Shanelle Matus
said she is eager to join in the October
fun.
“Prairie Arts and Sheldon Chamber
and Development Corporation partnering
for the Halloween event is a
natural fit, as we both want a fabulous
community event,” Matus said. “It’s
truly why Sheldon is ‘Where Families
Come First’ for fun events and memory-making
moments.
Matus asked if the chamber could
partner up with the Prairie Arts Council
for Halloween, and
Prairie Arts Council secretary
Karin VandenBerg
immediately said yes.
VandenBerg said she
welcomes the chamber’s
increased involvement.
The chamber loaned a
few items and canopies
the past two years, and
the offer for an extended
role was just what she
witched, er, wished for.
“That would be great,”
VandenBerg recalled saying.
“Bouncing ideas off
each off other like the
old days. I was hoping
with the chamber’s help
it would make this the
fall bash grow.”
Matus was quick to don her pointed
hat and help stir the cauldron. It’s
exactly the kind of event the chamber
wanted to encourage, Matus said.
The chamber has reached out to
businesses to encourage them to
sponsor the event, make donations or
provide volunteers.
“This is an awesome opportunity
to involve your employees and their
families to participate in a fun family
activity,” Matus said in a message
to chamber members. “As a sponsor,
your name will be listed alphabetically
on the Halloween Carnival poster.”
VandenBerg, a huge Halloween
fan, said in addition to free games
and treats, a concession booth will
be open with food and drink for sale.
The event is a fundraiser for the arts
council.
“We have some new games this
year,” she said. “I want this to become
the thing that brings kids out
of the woodwork in ghoulish, wicked,
witchy fun.”
She said she hopes people and organizations
get behind the event, donating
money and prizes and offering
help with parking and getting people
across the highway. F
Fright Hike
Estherville to host hike through
Fort Defiance State Park
On a night close to Halloween wandering
through the dark woods can be a spooky
experience.
The Estherville Chamber of Commerce is taking
full advantage of that distinctly eerie ambiance
and they are even jacking up the creepy
quotient in an effort to give you a thoroughly
delicious scare for this Halloween season on
Saturday, Oct. 28, from 6-9:30 p.m.
This will be the fifth year for the Fright Hike,
which is held at Fort Defiance State Park. The
hike is a half-mile jaunt through the park.
And the intention is to scare you.
“Fright Hike is a unique haunted house experience.
We have what we call scare stations and
sections where the forest is the backdrop,” said
Lexie Ruter, the executive director of the Estherville
Chamber of Commerce. “You can expect to
be scared and to have a lot of fun.”
If you have little ones who aren’t as interested
in having their socks scared off, then maybe the
event’s “Lights On Hour” from 6-7 p.m. is just
right for you.
“We started the ‘Lights on Hour’ last year. One
reason for it was because we needed to add more
time because of the large amount of people we
have and we are pretty restricted because it’s a
state park we have to be out by 10:30 p.m., so
this allows us to go a little earlier,” Ruter said.
“Also because we wanted to provide an opportunity
for younger kids or people who are
wanting a little less scary experience. In the past
we have had families come with younger kids
and it can be too scary for them so this ‘Lights
On Hour’ gives them the opportunity to still
come out for some family fun while not scaring
the younger kids too much. It was incredibly
popular last year!”
Each year the Fright Hike continues to grow,
with 898 people attending the event last year.
“I think our uniqueness is definitely a draw.
Haunted houses are cool but being outside at
night in the woods adds a special element,”
Ruter said. “I also think that haunted houses are
a lot of work and there are fewer and fewer of
them around which helps us grow.”
An event like this takes a lot of work to plan
and a lot of helping hands to bring the fun on
the night of the Fright Hike every year. And, according
to Ruter, it couldn’t happen without the
help of some dedicated volunteers.
“I always look forward to what our volunteers
come up with! We have fantastic volunteers —
over 50 just to put it on for one night,” Ruter
said. “They are creative and always come up with
new and scary ideas!” F
Valley FULL of CANDY
Rock Valley hosts trick-or-treat event on Halloween
There are a lot of things associated
with Halloween. Scary movies,
jack-o-lanterns and costumes
are just a few things many folks look
forward to every autumn near the end
of October. If most kids were asked,
and probably some adults too, candy
would probably top the list too.
There will plenty of candy available
in downtown Rock Valley on Halloween
as the city’s chamber of commerce
once again hosts Candy in the Valley.
From 3:30-5:30 p.m. streets downtown
will be blocked off and businesses
will open their doors inviting
one and all to a unique trick-or-treating
environment.
Businesses not located on Main
Street will be able to set up tables along
the main drag and participate as well.
“It’s really an event celebrating
our community and a lot
of fun to come out and see
everyone dressed up,” said
Adam Rosman, director of the
Rock Valley Chamber of Commerce.
“For us it’s a great opportunity
to give back to the community
and the people who
support our businesses.”
Costumed kids and families
are encouraged to visit
downtown businesses which
will be handing out candy for
visitors.
There will also be a pumpkin painting
station available for those interested
in decorating an orange gourd
one last time for Halloween.
“People can come out and trick or
treat safely on Tuesday afternoon, and
since it’s Halloween they only have to
get the kids dressed up just once,” Rosman
said.
“It’s a safe environment downtown
and also a great opportunity
to shop our Main Street businesses.”
If you’re a long-time Rock
Valley resident, or relatively
new to town, Candy in the
Valley is fun for all.
“If you’re new to town it’s a
great time to come out and experience
the great community
we have here together, meet
some new folks and business
owners that have made that
same trek to town too,” Rosman
said.
Costumed shop owners, trick-or-treaters,
and a bit of shopping on the side.
Candy in the Valley is a great way
for the family to kick off a Halloween
evening full of fun. F
Rolling Oaks hosts second annual
Halloween event on Thursday, Oct. 26
at the Barn
The Boo Bash is back. For
the second year in a row
everyone is invited to enjoy
some family-friendly fall fun at
the farm on the hill in Spirit Lake.
Rolling Oaks Barn will open up
the grounds for costumed kids and
families to enjoy a children’s Halloween
party on Thursday, Oct. 26.
“This is the second time around
and this year we decided to switch
it up a bit and we’ll have a trick-ortrunk
set up,” said Jen Johnnson-
Ross, owner of Farm Girl Social
“The barn is such a great location.
To ease traffic flow, those visiting
are encouraged to enter on 41st
Street and exit onto Highway 71.
Johnson-Ross said they had
quite the crowd last year, estimating
that around 1,500 kids attended
the event and they expect a
similar, if not greater, turnout this
time around.
There will also be a costume
groups and spooky music provided
STICKING TO A BUDGET
It is easy to go over budget with home improvements, but
with these easy steps, you can stay in the black.
KNOW WHAT’S IMPORTANT
Know what is important to you and what is important
for increasing the value of your home. Some projects see a
greater return on investment, and certain projects will affect
your listing price more than others.
It also is important to know what you value. Oftentimes
mid-project, you will find yourself needing to make tough
choices on materials or installation costs. Knowing what
you are willing to compromise on will make this decision
smoother.
DIY. OR NOT.
Completing a home project yourself to save money may
not necessarily be the best way to go. For example, if you
don’t have the knowledge or experience, you could end up
paying much more in the long run.
While your labor is free, knowledge certainly isn’t. It is
smarter — and more budget-friendly — to know what you
can handle and what is over your head.
WHEN TO HIRE AN EXPERT
If you feel like a project is over your head, it is time to start
looking for an expert. Be sure to get at least three quotes for
each service you need done.
Remember that bids are about more than price. You
should care about outcome, as well. Going with the cheapest
bid doesn’t do you any good if the level of work proves to
be less than desired.
BUDGET THE UNEXPECTED
Pad your budget. No matter what you think something
will cost, unexpected issues always arise, from a hidden pipe
that needs moving, to extra shipping charges, to unanticipated
permit fees. A safety net of 10 percent of your overall
budget should protect you from overextending yourself.
CURB
APPEAL
Think of curb appeal as your home’s first impression. In fact, the
curb appeal of any home can help (or hurt) the property values of the
entire neighborhood.
According to the National Association of Realtors, 63 percent of
homebuyers will drive by or schedule an appointment after viewing
a home they like online. While you might not be in the market to sell,
the “saleability” of your home should always be on your mind.
Improving your home’s curb appeal can be done in the following three
steps.
AN HONEST ASSESSMENT
Walk to the street and look back at your house. What do you see?
Take an honest look at your home. Take a notepad and pen with you.
Write down projects that need to be completed. It is helpful to distinguish
projects you want to start, versus repairs that need to be made
to existing structures or areas.
A GOOD SCRUB DOWN
Dedicate a weekend to cleaning out the gutters. It is also important
to examine the siding of your home. Is it in good shape? Pressurewashing
house siding can strip away
any green growth or mildew hanging
out in the cracks — making it look
bright and new.
Spray for any weeds creeping up the
driveway or walkways and sweep the
front porch. Keeping your property
clean is an essential aspect of home
improvement.
F all
A GENTLE
SPRUCING
Your entryway is always a focal
point. Make it stand out by painting
your front door a bright, fresh color.
Visit your local home improvement
store or nursery and pick up potted
plants and hanging baskets for the
front porch.
If you have a large front yard, or
own a home in a new development,
consider planting a tree. Another
easy upgrade to your landscaping is
installing outdoor lighting.
Opt for budget-friendly solar lighting fixtures. They rely on the sun
for power, which means no digging up the lawn to bury electrical
lines. This also makes installation a breeze. Line walkways, highlight
shrubbery and anything else that makes your home stand out from
the crowd.
REMODEL OR MOVE?
Before you decide to move up to a bigger
home or one with a more modern floor plan,
consider remodeling.
A remodeling project can cause some shortterm
upheaval in your life, but a move also
can be a disruption. Before you decide to shop
around for a new home, consider talking to
a contractor about how your home could be
changed to better suit your needs.
HAPPY REMODELERS
While homeowners often wait until they’re
planning to sell to remodel, many report that
they’re happy staying put after a major remodeling
project.
According to the National Association of
Realtors’ Remodeling Impact Report, 64 percent
of homeowners said they experienced
increased enjoyment in their home after
completing a
remodeling
project, and
75 percent
said they felt a
major sense of
accomplishment.
“Realtors
remodels can
offers or gain
from a
home,” said
NAR president
Tom
Salomone.
“But remodeling projects are just as valuable to
homeowners who simply want to get more joy
out of their dwellings.”
Judy Mozen, president of the National Association
of the Remodeling Industry, said, “Remodeling
projects can greatly improve both
the value of and satisfaction with one’s home,
which are great things no matter the reason for
a project.”
LOVE YOUR
NEIGHBORHOOD?
When you bought your home, you probably
researched taxes and nearby schools, parks
and shopping, as well as less tangible items,
such as a warm connection amongst neighbors.
In short, you bought your home for a
reason, and even if some of those reasons no
longer hold true (such as sufficient space), a
good remodeling job could help you fall back
in love with your once-beloved home. You
have probably made many memories in your
home. Speaking to a professional remodeler
could help open your eyes to possibilities you
hadn’t considered before, and allow you to stay
put in your home and make even more memories
there.
VALUE ADDED
You could find that a remodel adds unexpected
value to your home. According to
the NAR report, Realtors listed the interior
projects that yield the biggest returns at resale
as hardwood flooring refinishes (with 100
percent of the project’s cost recovered), insulation
upgrades (95 percent), new wood flooring
(91 percent) and converting a basement to a
living area (69 percent). Outdoors, Realtors
listed top resale-value projects as new roofing
(105 percent of project cost recovered), a new
garage door (87 percent), new vinyl siding (83
percent) and new vinyl windows (80 percent).

BUSINESS IS BOOMING
If you’re thinking of remodeling
your home, you’ve got plenty of company.
The housing and remodeling
industries are booming, according to
a pair of reports out in mid-2017.
Home improvement and repair
spending was healthy and stable
growth was expected through the
first half of 2018, according to the
Remodeling Futures Program at the
Joint Center for Housing Studies of
Harvard University.
According to the Center’s Leading
Indicator of Remodeling Activity
(LIRA), annual increases in remodeling
expenditures were expected to
remain at or above 6 percent through
the second quarter of 2018.
“The remodeling market continues
to benefit from a stronger
housing market and, in particular,
solid gains in house prices, which
are encouraging owners to make
larger investments in their homes,”
said Chris Herbert, managing director
of the Joint Center for Housing
Studies. “Yet, weak gains in home
sales activity due to tight inventories
in many parts of the country are
constraining opportunities for more
robust remodeling growth given that
significant investments often occur
around the time of a sale.”
LIRA did project that annual increases
in remodeling expenditures
will soften somewhat moving forward,
according to a news release.
In a separate study, the Center declared
the national housing market
fully recovered from the depths of
the housing crisis. “A decade after
the onset of the Great Recession,
the national housing market has, by
many measures, returned to normal:
housing demand, home prices, and
construction volumes are all on the
rise, and the number of distressed
homeowners has fallen sharply,”
the Center said in a news release announcing
its “State of the Nation’s
Housing 2017” report. “However,
high demand and tight supply are
pushing up housing costs and adding
to concerns about affordability.”
National home prices finally
passed the pre-recession peak in 2016,
according to the report, and prices
were up in 97 of the nation’s 100 largest
metropolitan areas in 2016.
The report also had an optimistic
outlook on the coming decade, projecting
that housing demand will
soar as both millennials and baby
boomers age.
Spencer Jaycees host annual Haunted House
The Spencer Jaycees annual Haunted
House has been relocated to a
new spot this year.
That means new sets and new scares
for two weekends, Oct. 20-21 and
Oct. 27-28. The event runs from 8
p.m.-midnight. They’ll also be open
on Halloween night, Tuesday, Oct. 31
from 7-10 p.m.
The haunted house has been located
at the Industrial Building on the
Clay County Fairgrounds the past few
years, but this year they are making a
move to the new Tower Gate Pavilion.
“It’s great because it’s a newer
building with easier access. It opens
the door for the new things we can
do with the haunted house because
it gives us a little more space,” said
Andrew Colbert, a member of the
Spencer Jaycees and the chair for the
Haunted House. “In the past, we’ve
re-used some things but this year it
is completely brand new designs and
new rooms.”
This year the overall theme for the
Spencer Jaycees Haunted House is
“Horror Movie Terror Tour.”
“I won’t give anything away but we
do have a movie-based theme this
year. With all of the horror movies
coming out this year,” Colbert said.
“There are definitely some interesting
things in this year. It’s not similar to
anything we’ve ever done. We’ve gone
more all-out this year.”
It takes about half an hour to go
through the Haunted House, depending
on how fast you are moving.
While scaring kids and adults is
the name of the game, the Jaycees are
happy to bring down the scare factor.
“We are teaming up with the YMCA
again this year to do a ‘lights on’
haunted house for some of the younger
kids in the YMCA program. It’s a
great event to get some of the youth
involved in the haunted house,” Colbert
said.
The Spencer Jaycees annual
Haunted House is a fundraiser for the
group’s annual Tree of Joy program
where they give gifts to children who
might not otherwise receive any.
Construction of the Haunted House
begins usually right after the conclusion
of the Clay County Fair, but this
year it was a little longer before they
got going.
Each night, the Haunted House is
operated with volunteers.
“We have a bunch of different people
who volunteer to help out. We are
always willing and appreciate people
who want to come out and volunteer
to help us out. We couldn’t do it without
the volunteers,” Colbert said.
The Spencer Jaycees started the
Haunted House in the early 1980s,
according to Colbert.
“Then around ’98 or ’99 there was
a fire and everything was lost. In the
meantime they did a haunted hayride
for a few years, then in 2002 they
started up the haunted house again,”
Colbert said.
It’s a very popular fundraiser with
around 600-800 people who come
through each year.
Admission prices are $10 or $7
with two non-perishable canned food
items that will be donated to Upper
Exploring the past
Last year, one of the Hike the Wilds in the fall was at
Reeds Run Wildlife Area. The Hike the Wild events
explore areas all over the Iowa Great Lakes and beyond.
PHOTO SUBMITTED
Loon Lake Cemetery is site for next Hike the Wild
While walking through cemeteries
in October might
seem like a good way to give
yourself the willies, it can also be a lot
more than that.
On Tuesday, Oct. 24, the Dickinson
County Nature Center’s Hike the Wild
series will head to Loon Lake Cemetery
just north of the Iowa border.
The parking lot for the Loon Lake
Cemetery is located in the Robertson
County Park, which is a part of the
Jackson County Park System.
The group will meet at 9:30 a.m. at
the nature center and will caravan to
the site.
This is a new place that hasn’t yet
been explored during a Hike the Wild
event.
“We have not done a Loon Lake
Cemetery Hike before. We decided
to do this hike, to inform people
about the interesting past of a local
cemetery,” said Bryanna Kuhlman, the
environmental education coordinator
with the Dickinson County Nature
Center. “While looking into October
hikes, we thought that focusing on
the historical aspect of the cemetery
rather than the folklore behind the
site, would be interesting to a number
of people.”
Participants are lucky, because
they’ll be joined by a expert on the
history of the Loon Lake Cemetery.
“We set out to help inform people
about the interesting past of the cemetery
and the pioneers that are laid
to rest there. We are very fortunate
to have Mary Chonko, author of the
book ‘Loon Lake Cemetery,’ join us
at this site,” Kuhlman said. “Mary has
done extensive research into the pioneers
who are laid to rest there. She
will shed some light on the history of
the site as well as what is being done
to preserve this historic cemetery.”
Unfortunately, the site has been
vandalized and many of the tombstones
have been destroyed. A number
of the gravestones have now been
moved to help preserve them.
For many years a lot of rumors
swirled around the Loon Lake Cemetery
site including that three witches
had been buried there. Chonko has
worked to dispel those tall tales. During
this fall hike they will debunk
those myths, talk about the history
of the site and the current restoration
taking place there.
This will be a place to learn lots of new
things, which is something that Kuhlman
loves about all the Hike the Wilds.
“I love learning new things. With
this hike in particular, my research
took me to the Jackson County Historical
Ragamala Dance
perform on Oct. 28
A
unique experience is headed to Worthington, MN.
The Ragamala Dance Co. will be performing on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Memorial
Auditorium Performing Arts Center.
Under the direction of Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy, Ragamala Dance Company’s
work explores the dynamic tension between the ancestral and the personal. As choreographers and
performers, Ranee and Aparna create dance landscapes that dwell in opposition — secular and
spiritual life, inner and outer worlds, human and natural concerns, rhythm and stillness — to find
the transcendence that lies in between.
As mother and daughter, each brings her generational experience to the work — the rich traditions,
deep philosophical roots, and ancestral wisdom of India meeting and merging with their
hybridic perspective as Indian-American artists.
For the past 30 years, Ranee and Aparna have worked together in an intergenerational creative
partnership. Together they have created their own specific sub-genre that combines a contemporary
Western aesthetic with an Indian ethos.
