Travelling
Dubai
In 2013, my parents and I decided to take
a tour to Europe where we visited Italy,
France, Germany and Switzerland. When
we arrived, we were totally amazed with
everything we saw, the streets were
extremely clean, the people were
educated, prices were fair, an organized
city, subways with lots of stops for
egalitarian access. But unfortunately,
amid so much nobility and quality, I
realized that there were many immigrants
who ended up without having a place to
work and asked for help on the streets.
At that time we had a very basic notion of
the English language and much less the
original languages of each country so we
had to turn off with the communication,
going through the wrong times where we
did not know how to ask for information
about where we wanted to go. With this,
upon returning to Brazil I decided to take
a good English course to be able to
communicate in a future trip and also to
my professional future, guaranteeing me
a higher qualification.
It was a bit difficult because I never
imagined that I would have to speak
English in my life and sometimes the
words just ran out of my head, but I
struggled to talk and people could
understand me and I'm very happy about
it! I'd say I survived (laughs).
Halloween cake
Kids will love picking off the sweets and biscuits from this fun
Halloween graveyard cake, complete with biscuit tombstones.
Prep: 1 hour
Cook:1 hour
Level: medium Serves 10
Ingredients
Method
For the cake
250g/9oz butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
250g/9oz caster sugar
4 free-range eggs, lightly beaten
1 tsp vanilla extract
200g/7oz self-raising flour
50g/2oz cocoa powder
For the ginger biscuit tombstones
350g plain flour
½ tsp ground ginger
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
100g/3½oz butter, cut into cubes
175g/6oz light soft brown sugar
4 tbsp golden syrup
1 free-range egg, lightly beaten
For the decoration
white icing (such as royal icing), for decorating the
biscuits
125g/4½oz butter, softened
250g/9oz icing sugar
2 tbsp cocoa powder
1 tbsp milk
½ pack Oreo cookies or bourbon biscuits
1 pack chocolate sticks (such as Matchmakers)
halloween sweets
Recipe Tips
You can use shop-bought biscuits if you
like - malted milk, rich tea fingers and
bourbon biscuits work well.
1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.
2. Grease and line a 20x30cm/8x12in rectangular cake tin with baking parchment.
3.Beat together the butter and sugar with a hand-held mixer until the mixture is pale and fluffy.
Add the eggs a little at a time, beating well between each addition, adding the vanilla extract
with the last of the egg.
4.Sift together the flour and the cocoa powder into a bowl. Fold the flour mixture into the butter
mixture until fully incorporated.
5.Spoon the cake batter into the prepared tin and smooth the surface with the back of a
spoon.
6. Bake for 30 minutes until firm to the touch (a wooden skewer inserted in the centre should
come out clean).
7. Leave to cool for 10 minutes in the tin before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
8. For the ginger biscuit tombstones, place the flour, ginger and bicarbonate of soda into a
mixing bowl. Rub the butter in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine
breadcrumbs.
9. Add the sugar, syrup and egg and mix together until it forms a soft dough. Wrap in cling film
and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
10. Pre-heat the oven to 180C/350F/gas 4.
11. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut out your shapes – you will only need
a few for the cake so cut out some other Halloween shapes for extra biscuits.
12. Place the shapes on to greased baking sheets and bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes.
Remove from the sheets with a palette knife and place onto a wire rack to cool completely
before decorating with white icing.
13. For the buttercream, beat the butter in a large bowl with a hand held mixer until creamy
then add the icing sugar a spoonful at a time beating well between each addition. Add the
cocoa powder and milk and beat again for a further five minutes until light and fluffy.
14. Blend the Oreo or bourbon biscuits to fine crumbs in a food processor.
15. Spread the buttercream over the cooled cake, covering the top and sides – don’t worry if
it’s not smooth - a few lumps and bumps will make it more mud-like.
16. Break the chocolate sticks in half unevenly, then stick around the sides of the cake to form
the fence.
17.Sprinkle the biscuit soil over the surface before sticking in the tombstones and decorating
with spooky sweets

Idioms
Hurricane, Typhoon, Cyclone...
What is the difference?
A hurricane, a typhoon, and a cyclone are essentially the same type of weather phenomenon.
There is no difference! So why are there three different words for the same thing?
Well, the only real difference is WHERE the storm forms and takes place or happens.
If it happens in the Northeast Pacific Ocean or the Atlantic Ocean, then it is called a Hurricane.
If it happens in the Northwest Pacific Ocean, which is near Asia, then it is called a Typhoon.
If it happens in the South Pacific Ocean or the Indian Ocean, then it is called a Cyclone.
EXAMINATION CLASS
“I think this class is
really important during
the course, because
when the course ends, I
going to be.”
“The Examination
class is a good class
because it is a great
prepares us for the
real tests.”
“The Examination class
is different and more
challenging. A class
where I could look at
myself and evaluate
myself according to
what I learned.”
was the center of everything. Our quiz on the history of The House
made students laugh a lot and also presented them with never-seenbefore
information.
They had a chance to learn very interesting curiosities about the great
person behind everything, Valter Costa, and how he was able to reshape
the scenario of the English teaching along with his long-time friend, Abilio.
Students also had fun singing along with our musicians, who brought
songs that actually made everyone sing!
My first Exchange Program!!
“I was told by a friend once: "being in an
exchange program is like getting in the
line of a rollercoaster and have that
adrenaline rush and fear feeling, a mix
of great thrills taking hold as well as
having butterflies in the stomach". It's
such an incredible experience, for sure.
Getting to know people from all over the
world, new places you've never
imagined visiting, or experiencing a
different culture, just makes you see
things in a new light. The challenges
are also countless, like the language, traditions, food,
homesickness or the educational system, but it's worth the
effort.
Still, everything's been much easier with The House school.
They provided a solid basis so the language wouldn't be a great
obstacle; having classes there helped me a lot, both to
communicate and to speak freely, shamelessly, fearlessly and
with self-assurance. Before coming, I needed to prepare
myself, so teachers helped me a lot telling about their past
experiences and assisting me with some grammar issues I still
had.”
My Contact with English:
some tips for beginners
Vergueiro
When I started my English classes at The House School, I'd never had an experience
such as staying in a place that people only speak in English. I remember that I entered
the reception and there were two students talking about Dragonball Z, because I could
really understand the words Goku and Gohan.
That time I thought that I would spend so much time trying to say things in English, but I was totally wrong. In my
first weeks I was talking the necessary, although, when I scheduled video classes for example, I could only
understand 10 or 15 percent of the episode. I remember that my first video class was with advanced students.
They laughed a lot and I couldn't understand the jokes, but I never gave up, so new students, my tip is: don't give
up, you will understand naturally in some weeks or months.
I really went through the steps of The House School.
The first time I listened, I understood just a little. After that, I listened and read things and I understood well.
When you understand the episodes well with subtitles, it is the perfect time to turn them off, probably you will not
understand very well. Then you can't give up, until you start to understand again and naturally.
I know that sometimes it is hard to keep watching a TV series for example, because of our routines, but
sometimes I put the CD of The House School in my car, while I'm driving. It doesn't matter if you do not
understand everything because of traffic jam, the important is that you are having contact with a second
language in one part of your day. Another tip that I can give is: you can put a song too, and try to write a dictation;
after this listen to the songs, write a little composition about the story of the song.
What's your favorite movie style?
Which movie do you recommend? Why?
“I like many types of movies, but if
I am to choose, I prefer action
movies. I recommend the S.W.A.T.
movie, because it is interesting
and it has a lot of thrills and a very
exciting story.”
Raphael Carvalho
“My favorite kinds of movies
Marcos Francisco Abbate
“ M y f a v o r i t e m o v i e s t y l e i s
adventure. I liked Armageddon, this
movie is about the extinction of Earth
by a meteor, so astronauts and a crazy
man have a mission of exploding the
meteor. I like this movie, because it
has action, romance, comedy and
suspense, but the best in this movie is
the song by Aerosmith.”
Nothing like the good old group working to get
some improvement going. This is what
Speaking classes are all about!
In MP classes, the focus is on you! Never
surrender to the difficulties and keep studying!
These guys are learning their first words at the same
time they're increasing their vocabulary. Working
with substitutions is great to build your own
personality while speaking.
This isn't something you see everyday! The TV
is on, but no one's looking! Maybe they're
focused on the great classes they're about to
have very soon!
Doing the exercises from the book is a
fundamental step to improve your language skills
and help you understand Vicent's story better. Way
to go, students!

Recently, our school has received a huge present! A new student that is
very small compared to everybody else. His name is Dante, and he is
Katlyn and Carlos' son! They were our students for some time and were
enjoying their journey at the school when they had a surprise… Katlyn
got pregnant!!!
Even though their path in the school would be hard to continue, they
overcame the difficulties and are now bringing the baby to their English
classes! Their progress in the language is still happening and, besides
that, the baby is spreading a lot of joy and happiness around the school!
“When we received the news of the pregnancy, we felt very happy but
also very worried because we had started the English course just three
months before that. During the pregnancy, everything happened very
well, but then Dante was born and we had a problem: “How to continue
the course with a baby?”. We talked to the school coordination and they offered us all the support and the
flexibility to continue the classes. Nowadays, we go to school and we attend classes with our little Dante and
we found out that learning English as a family is possible and very funny.”
Dante´s Family
“My father joined The House first. He was always talking about how
wonderful this school is and the amazing classes that he'd never seen
before. When my sister started studying here too, she was also very happy
about the method and that was cool because she had never liked English. I
love The House dynamic classes! And it's great to study with my family
because I don't drive, so I don't have problems to get a ride and we can share
what we've learned. Luisa likes a lot our teachers! It is her biggest
motivation!”
Júlia Maritan
“I'd never liked English and when I decided to stop my old English course, my
father tried to convince me to continue, but I really hated that. After that, my
father started studying here and he was always talking about how amazing
the school was: the method, the classes and the teachers; and I was very
interested in it. Then, some time later, I started to study here too, and I love it!
Now, I love English and all my comments have made my sister start too! I
really like to study English with my family.”
How do you feel about technology nowadays? Do you support its advances?
If you don't, how do you believe the world would be without it?
“Technology is in everything nowadays. Everybody is connected using the
internet, smart phones or computers. It is true that technology can create
some problems, but I believe that there are more benefits than bad points.
With the advance of technology we can reach goals that we have never
thought about. So, it is very important that technology continues advancing
more and more.”
Vinicius Silva Garcia, Teth
“Nowadays, the technology advances very fast and to me, an old man who
was born when we didn't have personal computers or cell phones,
sometimes faces difficulties to use all technology tools. However, I know
that these new equipments help me very much during my day, mainly when I
am in my job. I believe that it is possible to live without these devices but now
all the citizens are already used to being in touch with them all day long.”
Gabriel Silva Mendeleh
“It depends on the case, because I agree when technology is used in
medicine development or to create new tools to save the humanity. But I
disagree when people use technology to destroy nature or humanity. I
believe nowadays people can't live without technology because they are
addicted to it and they can't be far from it.”
“Nowadays, the technology is very important for many things. In my opinion,
the world is better with technology advances. For example, the use of
technology in sciences and hospitals. I think that today we can't live without
technology.”
Roberta Maraninchi Silveira
“The technology is very important nowadays because we are connected with
the whole world and we can find several answers or solutions to many
problems.”
Celso Donizete Cainelli
things that before used to be almost impossible.”
How do you feel about technology nowadays? Do you support its advances?
If you don't, how do you believe the world would be without it?
“The technology is part of our lives and we can't live without it because we are
already used to it, and being without it would be like going backwards in our
continuous evolution. The world wouldn't be prepared to move backwards
and millions of people would die because we all depend on the technology. It's
in the hospitals, in our jobs and in our lives.”
William C Gomes
“I think it is very important in our life because people do everything with
technology.”
Camila Takyla Felix Batista
“I am becoming old, so, for me technology changes very fast, but who
can live without it? I am always a step behind it. I'm a hard nail to bite. I
don't give up.”
Jurimaná Amancio da Silva Miguel de Almeida
“I think technology is necessary to fill humans' necessities, for
example, capacity, processing, memory, etc… So technology helps us
in the evolution.”
Pedro Marcio Buzati Kasia
“I think that technology nowadays is very important in a lot of things like
medicine, creating new medicaments and cure for diseases… The world
can't live without it, a lot of things go better after technology.”
Rapahel Cerdeira Nunes da Silva
“I feel very comfortable because I have technology. I support it because it is
very important for the future. I don't believe the world would survive without
technology because the information needs to be shared fast nowadays.”
Success student
I had a previous experience with
English by learning using Tv series
and in High School. But then, I felt
that I stuck in some point that a help
was really needed. Then, I started
looking for a school and The House
showed me how it is possible to
have a busy life and still learn
English.
Since I started to study at The House School I had some
great experiences and positive feedbacks. It has been
improving my professional and personal life. I also had the
opportunity to represent my company in a fair in Las
Vegas, USA. I worked a lot and enjoyed funny moments,
too.
My English skills were improved
enough for me to realize the difference
comparing to another trip that I had. At
this time, it was really easier to express
myself, ask real information and give
attention to foreign customers and
suppliers.
Another good experience was this
month, September, in a Brazilian fair where I could put my
English on proof again… I talked to many partners and the
conversations flowed really fine and I even received some
complements about that. I know that I still have a long way
to get a real fluency, but I also know that studying at The
House I'm on the right way to get it.culture in which it
should operate. And remember: There are no side
effects – they are part of the technology.
English influence
Campos Salles
Suggestion: Game of Thrones accents
Game of Thrones is a huge, ambitious show. It's clear how much work goes into crafting
each of the hour-long episodes. From creating hyper-realistic dragons, to casting
hundreds of extras for giant battles, the show spares no expense.
For many fans, though, there's one detail of the show where the work that goes into it
may go unnoticed: accents.
Over the past six-plus seasons, Game of Thrones has introduced fans to close to 200
characters. Nearly all of them speak with some variation of an English or Scottish
accent, though there are a few exceptions. However, few actors are using their natural
voices, and are instead doing an accent that fits where in Westeros their character is from
Characters who sound nothing like the actors who portray them:
Oberyn Martell: Though he
was born in Chile, Pedro
Pascal was raised in the
Southern California and
Texas, and sounds nothing
like his onscreen persona.
Davos Seaworth: Liam
Cunningham was born in
Dublin, Ireland, though you
wouldn't be able to tell from
the Geordie accent he does
while playing Davos.
Bronn: Bronn actor Jerome
Flynn is from southern
England and has an upperclass
English accent, but
does a convincing northern
English accent in the show.
Syrio Forel: Arya's dancing
master hailed from the faroff
land of Braavos, and
spoke with the fictional
Braavosi accent. He was
portrayed by London-born
Miltos Yerolemou, who
speaks with a standard
English accent.
Ygritte: Despite being
Scottish, Rose Leslie speaks
w i t h a R e c e i v e d
Pronunciation accent —
what you might consider a
very proper English accent.
To play the Wildling Ygritte,
however, Leslie does a
strong northern English
accent.
B o r n i n R u d k ø b i n g ,
Denmark, Nikolaj Coster-
Waldeau speaks with a
noticeable Danish accent.
He does his best attempt at a
Southern English accent to
play Jaime, but you can hear
his true accent slip through
from time to time.
Khal Drogo: Khal Drogo
mainly speaks Dothraki, but
he throws in a few English
words here and there. The
a c t o r J a s o n M o m o a ,
however, is Hawaiian and
speaks with a West Coast
American accent.
Lord Varys: Actor Conleth
Hill is from Northern
Ireland, though for "Game of
Thrones" he does a refined
southern English accent.
Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish:
The Dublin-born Aidan
G i l l e n s p e a k s w i t h a
noticeable Irish accent. His
" G a m e o f T h r o n e s "
character, however, has an
a c c e n t t h a t h a s b e e n
morphing and changing
constantly since his season
one debut.
Jorah Mormont: Iain Glen is
a S c o t t i s h a c t o r f r o m
Edinburgh, something you
might be able to quickly
deduce after hearing him
s p e a k . I n " G a m e o f
Thrones," however, his
character Jorah Mormont
speaks with the Received
Pronunciation accent of a
former Westerosi lord.
The Hound: Rory McCann
has a thick Scottish accent,
though he does his best to
disguise it with an English
a c c e n t i n " G a m e o f
Thrones." If you listen
closely, though, you'll hear
his brogue slip through from
time to time.
Tyrion Lannister: Many fans
forget that Peter Dinklage is
New Jersey born-and-raised.
To play Tyrion Lannister,
Dinklage does his best
attempt at a Received
Pronunciation English
accent — with varying
degrees of success.

Common Traditions of Halloween
Along with the wearing of costumes, there are many other traditions which go along with Halloween.
They include the following:
Carving pumpkins.
Typically a large, round, orange pumpkin
is chosen and carved out, with one side
being a face. A small candle is placed
inside the jack-o-lantern in order to
illuminate the outline of the face.
Bobbing for apples
This is a very traditional
activity. It is a good family
party activity and great for
parties.
Watching horror films.
A n y t h i n g f r o m t h e c l a s s i c
Frankenstein film to contemporary
horror flicks, watching movies with
themes connected with Halloween is
certainly a popular way to spend
Halloween.
Visiting a haunted house.
Usually, people pay money to
enter a building which has been
rigged with props and actors
who surprise and scare the
visitors as they walk through the
haunted house.
Scary Storytelling.
No Halloween party is complete without
at least a few scary stories.Talking in a
low voice or silly voice while everyone
else crowds together on the floor or
around a fire and listens can be a lot of
fun!
Halloween Recipes
The following recipes are quick
and easy to make. Great for a
Halloween Party!
Spooky Events and Destinations for Halloween Fun
A truly American holiday, Halloween always falls on October 31, and is the time when the young and young-at-heart don
costumes, troll for treats, and go in search of spooky activities, such as touring haunted houses and cemeteries.
Halloween festivities are celebrated in many different ways in cities and towns across the United States, ranging from
family-friendly trick-or-treating to adults-only costume parties.
Our guides across the USA have brushed away the cobwebs to reveal the best Halloween events in their area. Read
on...if you dare!
Halloween in New York City
If you're a creature of the night, then it makes sense to go to the "city that never sleeps" for Halloween. There are tons of
Halloween events in New York City for every age, interest, and persuasion. A few favorites are the Procession of the
Ghouls, visits to haunted New York City hotels, bars, and buildings, and Halloween events at NYC museums and zoos
for the whole family.
Halloween in Chicago
The howling winds of the Windy City is the perfect setting for celebrating Halloween. Chicago Halloween events are
many, including Chicagoween, the Spooky Zoo Spectacular, and the Haunted Sanitarium.
Halloween in Los Angeles
The USA's entertainment capital is crawling with Halloween Events and Festivities. Of particular note are the Adults
Only Halloween Party and the Day of the Dead Celebration, which draws on LA's long-standing Mexican heritage.
Halloween in New Orleans
Voodoo, above-ground cemeteries, and a penchant for eccentric costumes make New Orleans a blast for Halloween.
Check out the many New Orleans Halloween Events, which range from family fun at the zoo to a Vampire Ball.

“My best trip was to João Pessoa –
Paraíba, because I stayed with my
family and saw other places and an
kind of other culture. Moreover, I
loved the beach!”
Gabrielle Cristina Piati
“My best trip was to Brotas – São Paulo. This
is a place that has a lot of nature and
adventures. Other places may have the same
things but this was better because I was with
my best friends. We do everything together
and this is why this trip was so cool. Knowing
new places is very good but to experience them
with other people is more important. It
becomes magic.”
Vanessa De Oliveira Viana
“My best trip was to the farm with my
boyfriend. He rode his motorcycle and
we stayed there for two days only to
relax. The waterfalls were so beautiful
and I loved the river.”
Tatiane Florêncio
“My best trip was in the beginning of
this year, I went to the beach with my
friends. We enjoyed it a lot. I visited
three beaches, including Maresias and
Ilha Bela. They were beautiful and this
trip was good to me, as well as to my
soul.”
Jacques Florêncio
“My best trip happened when I went
to Salvador because the beaches are
very beautiful and the people are
very polite.”
Talita Carla De Tralia Medeiros
“My best trip was certainly when my
parents and I went to Europe for a tour
in the main countries. Everything was
so beautiful, so organized that we were
amazed! We intend to return and
explore more of it in the future.”
Barbara Gardenghi Pasquini
“The best trip I've ever made was to a
Museum in Brumadinho – MG because
I went there with my friends.”
Social project
Looking for a good physical activity? Then read this!
We all know that Luta Regional Bahiana (Capoeira Regional) is a Brazilian sport that
combines fighting with rhythm to the sound of music. But dis you really know that it offers
as many benefits as any other popular sport? Check out this cool contribution from our
correspondents at IMEC!
Stress reduction: A regular capoeira practice does wonders for relaxing
the mind and body. The exercise boosts endorphins, which puts you in a
better mood in no time.
Strength: Capoeiristas are always moving around on their hands with
handstands and rolls. This makes a marked improvement on upper body
strength. Also, so many of the movements require one to engage the abs
and core strength. The movements inherently build slow and quick twitch
muscle fibers, enhance breathing and blood flow, build flexibility, build hand
and eye coordination, balance and much more.
Flexibility: Some capoeiristas are on par with serious yoga practitioners in
terms of their flexibility.
But even those who moderately improve their flexibility lower their risk for
injury and increase their everyday mobility.
Cardio and stamina: Many times athletes from various sports are
surprised when they feel winded from a capoeira workout.
This is because capoeira uses muscle groups and cardio fitness in unique
ways. Intense capoeira practice can require enormous amounts of energy.
Gain confidence: If nothing else, capoeira is perfect for instilling a sense of
pride and confidence in anyone who practices. Not only will you feel
stronger and more courageous once you become comfortable in the jogo
(game), you'll find confidence in knowing that you are unique among your
peers because you can do things they couldn't imagine doing.
Overall fitness: Capoeira will improve your strength, flexibility and stamina,
thus improving your overall fitness. It may take a while to become fit, but
once you start to take capoeira seriously you can become the picture of fitness.
Meet new people: When you join a capoeira group, you become part of a family. You will meet
people from your own city and all over the world through capoeira events and practice.
Live authentically: Capoeira is a total body, mind and emotional expression. It involves one's
whole authentic person. As one grows more confident in the martial art, he or she also grows
more confident in the ability to express one's unique voice.
Surprised? Come and try a class of Capoeira! Thursday at 7:00 PM at Espaço
Shekinah. 530, Antonio Carlos Marçal. Jd Paulistano.

English JOKE
"The Court's Decision"
This joke is about a couple getting divorced
(ending their marriage) in a court of law. In
most divorce cases, the husband ends up
paying money called "alimony" to his wife, to
help support her when she is alone. In this
story, does the Judge explain his decision
well enough? (*o*)
“Mr. Clark, I have (1) reviewed this (2) case
very carefully,” the divorce court Judge said,
“And I've decided to give your wife $775 a
week”.
“That's very fair, (3) Your Honor,” the
husband said. “And (4) every now and then
I'll try to send her a few (5) bucks myself."
(1) looked carefully or "looked over»
(2) a problem discussed in a court of law
(3) a polite title (name) for a Judge
(4) sometimes (not very often)
(5) dollars
Horoscope
Explanation: When the Judge used the
verb "give", he meant his decision would
give the woman $775. It is normally the
husband's duty (his requirement) to pay
the alimony. But this man, when he heard
the word "give", thought the Judge would
pay it. Now THAT would be a very nice
Judge! (^_^)
You may not recognize just how lucky you are going to be this year,
Scorpio! The Sun-Pluto conjunction at 2017's beginning may keep you wired,
intense, and focused on your chosen work. Keep an eye out for lucky
opportunities and be ready to pounce. Your modern planet Pluto will keep you
sharp and intense all year long.
The separating Mars-Neptune conjunction in Pisces may tug at your heart
and conscience at times but your traditional planet Mars will keep you moving
forward and won't let you sink into self-doubt.
When Scorpio starts, the Sun is conjoined with Jupiter and Mercury. Your
lucky streak comes out of this. Mars is just entering Libra, too. This keeps you
involved and plugged in with other kindred spirits, and those with shared goals
and intentions.
Your drive for success is unwavering. Your craving for love and respect is
also without limits. The outside world may be crazy at times but at the end of
every day, you return to what matters most in your life.
2017 is a powerful and empowering year when nothing can distract,
disturb, or stop you if you’re determined. Go out and do it!
