Hello and
Welcome
Well here we are, nearing the end of the year, already
planning and looking forward to the next growing
season. As well as enhancing our environment, our
gardens connect us with nature; it is a well-proven
fact that people suffer less from stress, anxiety and
depression where there are more plants and birds.
The Autumn/Winter season brings its own delights and
beauty; dazzling displays of colour are a treat for the
eyes! Speaking of treats for the eyes, our Spring Bulbs
are on sale now and ready for planting during October,
so if you want to see the first signs of a beautiful new
growing season next year; pop some in your basket and
get planting!
We have some great events planned as we move more
toward the festive season, starting with our Christmas
Shopping event, continuing with our Wreath Making
evenings, and culminating with a visit from the big man
himself… Santa will be making an appearance for tea
with local children as well as enjoying a gentle stroll and
a HO HO HO or two around the store…
We hope you enjoy the final three months of what has
been a very busy 2017.

THE MAGIC
OF CHOOSING
YOUR
CHRISTMAS
TREE!
All our Christmas Trees are premium grade and grown in the Scottish Hills. You
can tell our trees are healthy by the sheen of their needles; a shiny, glossy green.
We’ve worked with the same supplier for over 9 years.
Whichever tree you choose, we believe it’s important that you see the width and shape prior to purchase, so all our
trees are taken out of the netting and shown to you. We want you to be confident that the tree will fit your space and
suit your decorations.
CARING FOR YOUR TREE
Treat it like cut flowers – cut 2 to 3cm from
the stump straight across using a handsaw.
It’s easier than you think, and helps the tree
absorb water.
Place your tree in a stand that holds water and
generously water the tree every day (don’t add
anything to the water). Depending on how
warm the room is, it can drink up to two litres
daily.
Do not unwrap the tree until you have it
exactly where you want it in the room, secure
in its stand. Otherwise, you risk damaging
the tree or injuring yourself on the branches/
foliage.
In a perfect world, it is best to leave the
branches to settle for 24 hours before
decorating, but we realise that excited children
will probably not allow that to happen!
Word of warning – Putting a tree close to a
heat source will dry it out. Your tree will lose
its sheen and branches will curl downward
causing baubles to fall off.

FRASER FIR
The Fraser Fir is also a great quality
tree. Generally narrower than the
Nordman so great for fitting in to tight
spaces. They also have a fantastic
“Christmassy” scent, bringing some
real festive aromas into your home.
Like the Nordman, it will keep its
needles for the season with proper
care.

Noble Firs are known for their
upturned, blue-green foliage & bushy,
layered look. Its stiff branches make

POINSETTIAS
Next to the Christmas Tree,
the plant most
synonymous with
the Festive Season
is the Poinsettia.
A statement large,
red Poinsettia is a
truly stunning gift to
give, and will add grace to
any Christmas dining table.
Three important points to
remember when purchasing
a Poinsettia
1. Be sure to take your plant straight home,
don’t leave it sitting in a cold car for a few hours while you
finish your shopping or your plant will wilt when you get it
home – they really don’t cope with the cold.
2. When you get your new plant home, be sure to place it
somewhere with bright, but filtered light, away from strong
sun and draughts.
3. Overwatering can damage Poinsettias, hydrate your plant
only when the surface of the compost has begun to dry out.

Winter
is on its way

Make sure your coop is
ready to face the colder
months.
Chickens are more tolerant than you
think when it comes to colder weather,
however, tolerance levels are dictated
by breed but typically all birds will need
consideration as the chillier days start to
set in.
All our varieties of Hybrids and large
Fowl should take the cold in their stride.
However, be mindful of drafts and wet
weather with breeds such as Silkies,
Bantams and Frizzles.
Check over your coop for signs of wear
and tear, fixing and improving where
necessary. Colder weather will mean that
predators like foxes will be more alert in
their search for food… don’t let your flock
be an easy target.
Reducing dangerous drafts is important,
and closing up some vents is the
obvious thing to do here, but remember
that excessive insulation and lack
of ventilation can raise humidity to
dangerous levels in a winter coop – so
keep a balance. High humidity can lead
to frostbite, it can also increase the levels
of ammonia in the coop which can affect
the birds lungs.
Layers of straw or wood shavings are a
great idea because the bottom layers
provide extra insulation. Your birds will
also roost together, sharing their body
heat.
A fat bird is a warm bird, so keep your
feeders full as the digestion process will
keep your birds warm. Extra nutrition like
mixed corn or high-protein treats can
boost core temperature.
The annual moult should normally start
early autumn. As the days become shorter
and the moult comes to a close, so will
egg production, giving your birds a bit of
respite from heavy laying. Some chicken
keepers prefer to help their birds with egg
laying over winter by providing artificial
light.
During slow egg production in winter
you could try reducing the calcium and
protein and increase calories to help keep
birds warm. Decrease protein intake by
mixing layer rations with corn.

THINGS TO LOOK OUT
FOR:
1. Frostbite - which is quickly
exacerbated by high humidity in
the coop, check combs and feet
and wattles regularly, covering
with Vaseline to help protect
them.
2. Fewer eggs – don’t panic, birds
don’t get enough daylight during
winter to produce so many eggs.
3. Check water feeders have not
iced over every morning.
4. Keep adequate ventilation
without allowing the coop to be
draughty.
