They grew up in the same locality
and even visited the same gym.
However, it took a Bollywood film
for Delhi neighbours Rakul Preet
and Sidharth Malhotra to meet
each other. In fact, the two,
who are currently shooting for
Neeraj Pandey’s espionage
thriller in the Capital, were
surprised that they never
bumped into each
other before.
The Delhi connection
helped them break the
ice rather easily. Rakul
says, “While talking,
we realised that both of us
grew up in Defence Colony; Sidharth’s house is in
the lane behind mine. We studied in Delhi University
(South Campus)
and even
went to the same
gym. That’s not
all; we even had
the same trainer!
It was surprising
that we
had never seen
each other before. In a way, it helped us bond
— we spoke about our favourite food joints
and enjoyed the schedule in Delhi as that
allowed us to meet our friends and family.

viral pictures
The photos of Ranbir Kapoor and Mahira Khan smoking
cigarettes outside a hotel in New York have gone
viral on the internet like wildfire. The pictures are from
June this year when Ranbir was shooting for the untitled
Sanjay Dutt biopic in NYC. As soon as the pictures
surfaced the internet, Mahira received a lot of
flak for wearing a short backless dress and smoking a
cigarette in Ranbir’s company. The duo has also been
touted as a couple after the photos surfaced.
While the duo has not yet reacted to rumors, Parineeti
Chopra has already lend her support to Mahira saying
it’s unfair to slut shame anyone. Joining the bandwagon
now is Rishi Kapoor,
Ranbir’s father. The senior actor,
speaking to a leading daily,
was quoted thus, “I only saw
them on Twitter, not on Instagram
or Facebook, because I
am only on Twitter. It’s not that
I saw these pictures before or I
know anything about this
already. You see, Ranbir
is a young star, he is unmarried,
and he’s a bachelor.
He can meet anybody
whoever he wants to, and
if people are going to invade
in his privacy, it’s
not done. And I can’t say
anything about all this because
he’s a young man
and he has the choice of meeting any girl.
“How do we know that here’s something more to this picture?
He could have met her just outside there. They must have been
in a restaurant or a place where they cannot smoke, that’s why
they are smoking outside. In US, they have really strict rules that
don’t allow smoking in public places. I can’t say anything more
because I don’t know anything more than that,” Daddy Kapoor
concluded.

Rajkummar Rao Says
“Now I’ve Options Of Good
Stories To Choose From”.
National Award-winning actor Rajkummar Rao,
who made his Bollywood debut with the 2010 film
Love Sex Aur Dhokha, says that earlier it was just
about looking for his next movie, and now it is about
choosing the best story.
Apart from winning hearts of the masses and receiving
honours from the Indian government, his
movies have travelled to international film festivals
as well. His latest film Newton had its world premiere
at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier
this year.
Asked if anything has changed in him after achieving
so much at a young age, the 33-year-old Rajkummar
told IANS, “No, nothing much has changed
in me as an actor. Since the day I started out, I
always wanted to be part of good stories. The only
thing that has changed is, now I have options of
good stories to choose from….”
“Earlier, it was just to get an opportunity to get
there. Earlier, it was more of looking for my next
film, now it is about choosing the best,” added the
actor.
Thanks to films like Shahid, Aligarh, and Trapped,
he has earned the label of ‘poster boy of independent
cinema’ in India.
But during the current year, it seems like he has
managed to balance out between mainstream Hindi
cinema (Bareilly Ki Barfi) and a festival delight
– Newton.
“I have never compartmentalized all these. For
me, they are about stories. A film like Kai Po Che!,
Queen, Behen Hogi Teri and Bareilly Ki Barfi are
not really independent films. Can you call them
one? Especially at the phase where the lines between
the two (commercial and parallel cinema)
are diminishing… this is an interesting time,” said
Rajkummar.

Anushka Sharma, who is loved for her chic and simple style, says she is
not a slave to fashion.
“I like to dress well. I enjoy wearing good clothes but I am not a slave of
fashion. I think it is important to use fashion and style as an extension of
your personality,” Anushka told IANS over the phone from Mumbai.
The Phillauri star says it is important to have an individual dressing style.
“For me, it’s good to know about fashion trends but at the same you cant
wear something that doesn’t look good on you. So I know what works for
me and what doesn’t. My fashion sense is very chic, comfortable and simple,”

Priyanka Chopra is known for saying all the right things at the
right time but it seems like the actress had a little bit of a mishap
this time around while promoting her latest Sikkimese film
Pahuna. She spoke about the film in an interview with ET Canada
at the Toronto International Film Festival, and also made
some comments about Sikkim – she called it an ‘insurgency
hit area’.
Sikkim is a small state in the North-east of India which never
had a film industry or anyone who made films from the region.
This is the first film ever that’s come out of that region, because
it’s very troubled with insurgency and troubling situations.
She received a lot of flak for her misinformed comments and
people called her out for putting out wrong facts about India on
a global platform. PC was quick to come forth and apologise
for it. She issued an official statement which said,
It saddens me that a comment I made during a recent interview
at TIFF has caused this much pain when that was never the
intention at all. I never meant to imply that Sikkim has insurgency.
My statement was in context of the film that deals with
people who seek refuge after they suffer from conflict. Sikkim
is a peaceful, green state with peace loving people. I know
that my statements have hurt the sentiments and pride of the
people of Sikkim and for that I truly apologise. I have always
taken pride as being someone who is informed about the world
but this time, some of the statements made were incorrect and
while I should have been better informed about certain facts,
I take full responsibility for what I said. I understand now that
our film was not the first Sikkimese film to be made, but our
aim has always been to provide local talent, both actors and
technicians, a global platform to shine. My team and I have
had a wonderful experience working in the state and with the
local cast and crew and are thankful to the support extended
by the Government of Sikkim.I understand the impact of the
statements made and hope that the people and Government
of Sikkim find it in their hearts to forgive me.

Lata Mangeshkar Is The Latest Victim Of Online Fraud

SIMRAN FALTERS A Movie Review
SIMRAN STORY: Praful Patel (Kangana) is a 30-year-old divorcee
living in Georgia with her middle-class parents. A housekeeper by
profession, she gets drawn to a life of crime after her tryst with gambling
at a Las Vegas casino. One bad turn leads to several more and
before you know it, Praful is in a sordid mess.
SIMRAN REVIEW: The nice thing about Simran is that it ventures
into an area where the Bollywood heroine offers no defence for be-
ing a badass. The protagonist, a woman with an undaunted
spirit, lives and loves by her own set of rules. She refuses to
have ‘sex without protection’ and is constantly up for adventure.
She doesn’t think twice about slipping into a life of crime
just to support her `character flaws’. So far so good.
Besides the premise, everything else about the film is improbable.
The writing falters in parts and naturally the execution
follows. The way Praful goes about robbing banks and gets
away scot-free, even after leaving her finger prints all over and
notes scribbled with lipstick seems unbelievable. The media
brands her the ‘lipstick bandit’, and the Atlanta cops and the
victimised bank employees seem like a bunch of jokers, who
keep harping on the fearless bandit’s modus operandi, and yet,
they fail to foil the half-a-dozen heists! It is almost like Hansal
Mehta is attempting a comic story. Nothing wrong there, but if
is a tale that is being recounted in lighter vein, then it should
have at least made the audience laugh some more.
The only one who is having a good time here is Kangana.
Whether she’s docile or daring, the actress goes about her
screen business with a flourish; getting her mannerisms pat.
However, there are occasions when even she gets carried
away with the constant focus. But then again, is she really to be
blamed? The filmmaker doesn’t even have another noteworthy
star on celluloid to share the limelight. Simran’s parents and
her fiancee, Sameer (Sohum) and other actors--foreign and
desi--don’t quite add up.
Frankly, you can’t emotionally invest in Simran or root for her
as much as you might want to. But when you watch the film,
you will find yourself warming up to her occasionally, because
she’s all you’ve got. Let’s give Kangana her due.

Diana, you have been seen in
very fewer films so far. Was that a
conscious decision to be choosy?
Not really. This year, I will be seen
in two films. First is Lucknow Central
and then, there’s Parmanu with
John Abraham. The process cannot
be called as choosy. It’s more of a
personal choice and decision.
As in… can you please elaborate…
As in, this is the way I want to go
on the journey in films. I like to do
stories that are intriguing. If I don’t
get a feeling about any script, then,
I don’t see any point in doing it. For
me to a do a film, I need to feel a story
and the character that I am playing
in the film.
What are the parameters that you
look for in a film to give your nod?
Firstly, it’s the story, its genre, the
relevance and significance of my
character in the film. I would like to
do content driven films.
So, was it a yes at the first go for
both the films viz., Lucknow Central
and Parmanu?
Totally! When Lucknow Central’s
script was being narrated to me by
Ranjit, I instantly wanted to do the
film. The script of the film was so
beautifully written that there was
hardly anything in the script which I
wanted to change or alter. It was a
perfectly written and an extremely
well-balanced script. Same went for
Parmanu as well (smiles).
Lucknow Central has a debutante
director in the form of Ranjit. Were
there any apprehensions or concerns
about will he be able to deliver
the film the way he had narrated
the film?
Let me tell you that Ranjit is one
person who has got such a clear
thought process. He knew exactly
what he wanted. Never even once
did he ever come across as a debutante
director. And
when we started
working together,
all of us were extremely
impressed
with his dedication
and sincere
approach towards
his work.
Even though
you have done a
handful of films,
you have worked
with many stars.
Was there anything
that you
learnt from them?
Yes, lots of stuff.
Did you learn that you should be
seen more often like all others?
(Laughs). I am doing that slowly now.
This year, I have two films releasing.
I am making up for all the time I was
absent. I am also reading a few
scripts. I really hope that something
substantial will come my way.
Do you ever give suggestions to
your directors?
I don’t think that I am that qualified
enough or experienced enough to do
that. It’s a democratic environment
although.
You have been a supermodel before
and have walked many international
ramps. Recently, there
has been a news about banning
skinny models who starve their
way to stardom. What’s your take
on the same?
Even though I cannot speak on
anyone’s behalf, all that I can tell
you is that I have been a super
skinny person myself. Initially, while
growing up, I used to cry about being
skinny and not being able to put
on weight. I even ate four bananas
a day at the advice of a dietician.
But, that too did not work. Eating has
been my passion, considering that I
am a half Parsi and a half Catholic
(Goan)! I would like to tell people to
accept themselves the way they are.
Do you miss leading a normal life,
now that you are a star heroine?
Not really. The place where I work
and my home are in two opposite
directions. When I am home, I can
walk and behave the way I want.
There are no paparazzi happening
on the other side of the town where
I stay! Even if someone recognizes
you, they will greet you with a Hi or a
request for a photo with me.

Raabta’s failure:
deSPite the filM’S failuRe, i got to leaRn a lot along the way.

Actor Kriti Sanon is basking in the glory of her latest hit, Bareilly Ki
Barfi. However, the actor says it feels as bad when a film fails to
do well at the box office. Earlier this year, Kriti’s much-hyped film,
Raabta, where she was paired alongside Sushant Singh Rajput,
tanked at the box-office. Despite the kind of hype created around
the film, Kriti admits it was “rather surprising” when it didn’t work,
but she acknowledges the fact that it happens whenever makers
try hands at something new.
“As far as I understand, flashback of Raabta, which was about 30
minutes of the film, was something we were experimenting with.
We were trying to show a different new world, which is animalistic
and with less emotions, so it’s not something that resonates with
everyone. And whenever you trying to do something which hasn’t
been shown on the big screen before, there are 50% chances of
it connecting with the audience or 50% that it won’t be liked. So,
you take that risk and as long as you are not just being safe and
doing newer things, it’s worth taking the risk.”
However, Kriti says, despite the film’s failure, she got to learn a
lot along the way. “As an actor, I have grown a lot while I was
prepping for the film because it did have a lot for me to do in
terms of learning how dual characters work,” says Kriti. In fact
she credits her journey of working in the film as a “really good
one”. “I don’t sit back and sulk. Failure and success are a part
of your whole career path. I feel that it’s the process you need to
enjoy,” she adds.
Asked if the number game at the box-office really takes on an
actor’s mind before or after its release, Kriti says, it’s something
beyond one’s control. “I personally feel that you can’t predict a
Friday, so I don’t bother much. As an actor or even as a filmmaker,
you can’t control it [the number]. The only thing that is in
your hands is to give your best and also to do a film for the right
reason. One should never sign a film on a whim,” she says.
“Do a film because you love the script or it is a character that
you really want to play as an actor, or you are attached with the
people who are associated with the film. For me, I loved Raabta’s
script and I have no regrets that I worked in it,” she adds.

he’d like to go for surrogacy and
have a child, provided that he drops
the idea of marriage. This will make

industry after Tusshar Kapoor and

Salman Khan also said that despite
being over 50, he doesn’t
feel that his time is running out. It’s
only when he is in his 70s and his
child is 20 that he might feel so. He

child in about two to three years is
because his father Salim Khan and
mother Salma Khan want to see
his baby. This bit of information is

no film at present that’s exciting. By the time it’s
September 29, people will be so hungry for a good
film. Also, since a long time, there hasn’t been a film
that catered primarily to youngsters. The last such
film probably was Badrinath Ki Dulhania, which also
starred Varun. Both the remixes in the film – ‘Oonchi
Hai Building’ and ‘Chalti Hai Kya 9 Se 12’ have
caught on very well.” Amod Mehra also reminded
that even after Judwaa 2, there’d be a dry period
until Diwali on October 19, which will also benefit
Judwaa 2. He said, “Until Diwali, there’s no prominent
film. The last 10 days before Diwali can be very
dry. But still, Judwaa 2 has the first 9-10 days and

horrible film, it will still do Rs 100 crore!”
But Taran Adarsh suggests one should wait for the
response before predicting if it can cross the Rs.
100 crore mark. He said, “Whether it’d do Rs. 100
crore or what kind of business it will do can be predicted
when the film is out.”
Starring Varun Dhawan, Taapsee Pannu and Jacqueline
Fernandez, it’s more like a reboot rather
than a sequel to the 1997 film of the same name,
featuring Salman Khan. At a time when biggies
clash over a release date, the makers of Judwaa
2 are lucky to have got a solo release, that too on
such a long weekend. Saturday September 30 is
Dussehra while Monday October 2 is a national holiday
on account of Gandhi Jayanti. Hence, a lot is
expected from this comic caper.
We spoke to the people in the trade and almost
everyone is unanimous that Judwaa 2 would definitely
be Varun Dhawan’s fourth film to cross Rs.
100 crore after Any Body Can Dance – ABCD 2, Dilwale
and Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Leading distributor
Rajesh Thadani said, “Varun Dhawan is one of the
bankable stars. Rs 100 crore is definitely happening
for Judwaa 2.” Trade expert Komal Nahta said,
“Judwaa 2 can do Rs. 100 crore business, not just
because of the four-day weekend. The trailers have
been liked. The songs have been very popular. The
Ganpati song ‘Suno Ganpati Bappa’ is very nice.
The remixes of course are a rage. So the music is
supporting the film very well.”
That the film looks entertaining and its promos and
songs have worked are also major factors as to why
trade is so confident about Judwaa 2. Trade analyst
Atul Mohan said, “Varun Dhawan today is a craze
amongst the youngsters and family audiences today.
Judwaa part 1 was also quite a hit film. Songs
of the sequel are also doing well. I don’t see any
reason why the film can’t do Rs. 100 crore.” Girish
Johar, film trade and business analyst, also feels
the same. He opined, “The promos have worked
and even the songs are doing well. Viewers know
what to expect since they have seen the first part of
Judwaa. Varun Dhawan’s earlier film Badrinath Ki
Dulhania had also spread cheer at the box office.
Audiences love such comic entertainers and hence,
everything seems to be going well for Judwaa 2.”
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh stated, “The expectations
are huge from Judwaa 2. It’s a huge brand
too. There has been a gap between the first and
the second film. But there’s tremendous recall value
So what’s the prediction for the opening weekend
figures? The experts differed slightly at this. Amod
Mehra predicted, “It’ll do Rs. 65-70 crore in the first
three days and around Rs. 85-90 crore at least in
four days.” Atul Mohan feels Sunday and Monday
can be huge. He emphasized, “The collections on
Sunday and Monday would be the maximum, at
around Rs 20 crore plus for each day.” Harveen
Singh, distributor from Rajasthan, however predicted
a lower number. He said, “If the day 1 collections
are in Rs. 12-13 crore range, it’ll minimum cross Rs.
50 crore in the first four days. After that, it remains
on the merit of the film as to where it goes.” However,
he too feels Judwaa 2 can work big time. He
added, “Varun Dhawan is working big time nowadays.
From the looks of it, Judwaa 2 looks like a
good, entertaining film. Also, after Toilet – Ek Prem
Katha, no film has worked big time.”
In sync with the double role element in their film, it
looks like Varun Dhawan and the Judwaa 2 makers
are going to get double the benefit and moolah at
the box office!

Filmmaker Sundar C’s magnum opus Sangamithra
was launched amidst lot of hype earlier this
year in Cannes International Film Festival. The
project was announced with Shruti Haasan and
she even underwent training in action for nearly
a month in London, preparing herself for the role.
In an unfortunate turn of events, she walked out
of the project as she wasn’t handed over the full
script of the film as promised when she signed the
project. Unsure of the full graph of her character,
she chose to exit the project, much to the surprise
of everybody. Since then, the makers have been
trying to find a replacement, amidst rumours that
the project was shelved.
According to latest reports, the makers have
signed Disha Patani as a replacement to Shruti
Haasan, and the project is set to roll from December.
While the makers are yet to make an
official announcement regarding signing Disha,
actress-politician Khushbhu Sundar, wife of Sundar
C, on Sunday confirmed the project will roll
from December. Apparently, Disha was signed a
month ago but since the complete
team hasn’t been put together,
they refrained from making an announcement.
Tipped to be made on a lavish
scale, the film happens to the
most expensive project in the careers
of its director Sundar C and
its makers, Sri Thenandal Studios.
It is also rumoured that the film is
most likely to be made into two
parts. Going the Baahubali way,
the first part will feature Arya while
the second one will star Jayam
Ravi, who had said that he will start training
for the project and also beef up to play a very
challenging role. Arya, who hasn’t had a hit in a
long time, has pinned all his hopes on this film
as he wishes to bounce back strongly. Double
Oscar-winning AR Rahman has been roped in to
compose music and he has apparently already
completed a song. The film will also be made in
Telugu and Hindi but maybe not simultaneously
along with its Tamil version.

Actor Swara Bhasker is on a roll. After delivering the critically-acclaimed
films including Nil Battey Sannata (2016) and
this year’s Anaarkali Ki Aarah, she is now gearing up for the
much-awaited film Veere Di Wedding. Being shot in Delhi, it
also stars Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Shikha
Talsania.
Though Swara has starred with Sonam earlier in Prem Ratan
Dhan Paayo (2015), she is glad that she has got a chance
to work with Kareena this time. “She is amazing, and such a
magnetic person. She’s funny, entertaining, and such a great
storyteller, who is always telling us funny anecdotes. But, at the
same time, she’s a chilled out team player, doesn’t throw any

had a secret wedding years ago have resurfaced.
Not too long ago, there were reports that Rekha still applies sindoor

METHI PARATHA
Ingredients
Directions
- Whole wheat flour - 2 cups
- Fenugreek leaves (Methi) - 2 bunches (about 1 cup)
- Red chilli powder - 3/4 tsp
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp (optional)
- Ginger - 1 tsp (grated)
- Carom seeds (Ajwain) - 1 tsp
- Salt - to taste
- Oil - 2 tbsp
- Ghee - 2 tbsp
1. Wash the methi leaves and chop it.
2. Take whole wheat flour in a bowl and add the methi leaves,
1 tbsp of oil, red chili powder, turmeric powder, carom seeds
and salt. Mix everything once. Sometimes I also add 2 tbsp
of curd with this.
3. Add water little by little and keep kneading to make a soft
dough. Cover with a damp towel and rest it for half an hour.
This resting time makes the dough very pliable and you get soft methi parathas.
4. Pinch out small balls, flatten between your palms and roll out using a rolling pic. Roll it till you get circular
roti about 6” diameter. You can use some dry flour for rolling to prevent sticking.
5. Heat a tawa and place the rolled out roti on it. Cook until the bottom is cooked. Flip it over and drizzle
some oil (or ghee) around the roti.
6. Cook until both sides are well cooked and some brown spots appear. Serve hot with some extra ghee
on top.

- Peanuts - 1 cup (roasted)
- Sugar/Jaggery/Brown sugar - 3/4 cup
- Cardomon Powder - 1/4 tsp
1. Melt the sugar/brown sugar in in a non-stick pan till it it turns honey brown in in color.
2. Crush the peanuts and add it it to the melted sugar with a pinch of cardomon powder.
3. Put this mixture immediately into a greased plate or tray.
4. Spread it it to the desired thickness using a rolling pin.
5. Immedietly cut it it with a greased knife.
6. After it it cools, separate the pieces and store in in air tight containers.

hilarious to see how the others around her react to her rather sultry voice. Tumhari
Sulu is a slice-of-life film and director Suresh Triveni has beautifully and humorously
captured the thought of how many housewives take immense delight in doing out of
the mundane. There is a little bit of tentativeness, when she tellsher programming

head that this much sexy is just fine.
The actress had tried her hands in comedy before with Ghanchakkar but it did not resonate
with audiences. There were a few hilarious scenes in The Dirty Picture (2011) that
she absolutely nailed. She has a funny bone and Tumhari Sulu seems to be in a milieu
she is so familiar with.
The film also stars Manav Kaul, Neha Dhupia and RJ Malishka Mendonsa. Tumhari
Sulu seems to be in the same space as English Vinglish but a lot quirkier. Well, the
individualistic heroine is the toast of modern cinema and Sulu seems to be one of them.

Asked why she often lands up having arguments with the media,
Richa said: “I don’t get angry. I am a straight-forward person and I
always speak my mind, but I feel media is no less either.”
“Since I am a straight forward person, people often assume that
I am angry by nature especially when you play a character like
Bholi Punjaban from ‘Fukrey’, who is very outspoken. So, it makes
a certain kind of image of an actor, but I am not like that.”
Clarifying her stand, Richa said: “I feel image is not self-made.
It’s not my problem that people don’t remember me for films like
‘Masaan’, but they only remember me for film like ‘Fukrey’. I have
done both kind of films, so audience sees you in a certain kind of
image and identify you with that kind of image only.
“If they don’t want to remember me in other kinds of role then I
can’t do much about that. So there is no conscious strategy with
that. If a film comes my way and I like the subject, then I do that
film.”
The team of ‘Jia Aur Jia’ has decided to revamp an old Hindi song
‘Jia ho... Jia oh Jia kuch bol do’ from the 1961 film ‘Jab Pyar Kisi
Se Hota Hai’, starring Dev Anand and Asha Parekh. The old classic
was originally sung by Mohammed Rafi.
The new version of the song is composed by Nisschal Zaveri and
is sung by Jyotika Tangri. It will also have bits from the original
Rafi version as well.
Richa said: “It’s the remix of the old song and we are dancing in
it. The subject of the film is living life to its fullest. It’s a slice-of-life
film so the song is also peppy, happy and energetic.”
‘Jia Aur Jia’ is produced by Mirza N Askari. Directed by Howard
Rosemeyer, it will release on October 27.

When Bollywood is often accused of being nepotistic
(a charge it definitely can’t escape), we often
forget that there are outsiders who break rankles of
the family clans to get into the industry and make a
big name for themselves. Some of these outsiders
are the rare ones who have made a smooth successful
transition from television to Bollywood. Of
course, the first name that comes to our mind when
it comes to thinking about these actors is Shah
Rukh Khan. Then there is the National award winning
actress Vidya Balan, along with Sushant Singh
Rajput, also Hansika Motwani down South. And
yes, who can forget Ayushmann Khurrana!
Ayushmann first achieved immense popularity
when he won the second season of Roadies at the
age of 20. From thereon, he became quite a recognisable
face on television, hosting quite a few popular
shows like India’s Got Talent and Extraa Innings.
When it was heard that he is going to make his Bollywood
debut as the leading man in 2012’s Vicky
Donor, not many were surprised. So many television
personalities have tried their luck on the big
screen. Many failed and returned back to the small
screen, and I am sure people were expecting the
same from the multi-faceted actor. However. many
took lightly Ayushmann’s ability to chose roles that
make him stand out from the pack, and Vicky Donor
was just the beginning. Sure, not everything he did
was successful, and he was even accused of not
making his performance stand out in every role.

But what one cannot take out of his career is the
risque factor – choosing roles that no mainstream
actor would dare to touch. He is perhaps one of
the rare few mainstream actors who want to play
heroes who have no qualms in showing off their
character’s inadequacies, and revel in that – his
filmography is a big proof of that. In the ’80s we had
actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Farroque Shaikh
who played leading men in a very simplistic manner
compared to Amitabh Bachchan and Sunny Deol’s
larger than life portrayal. However, the depiction of
these low-key protagonists got overshadowed as
Bollywood entered the ’90s and in the new millennium,
with many leading actors choosing to play
dream characters that show off their abs, dance like
a dream and fight many goons at a time. But then
we have actors like Irrfan Khan, Rajkummar Rao
and Ayushmann Khurrana, who are doing their best
to bring the era of Shah and Shaikh on the ’80s and
are getting success doing so.
As this feature is about Khurrana, let’s start with his
debut movie to understand how he is slowly bringing
a revolution…
In this John Abraham-produced, Shootjit Sircar-directed
entertainer, Ayushmann played a happy go
lucky Dilli youth who is chosen by a fertility expert to
be a sperm donor, because he has fantastic virility.
Normally mainstream Bollywood would balk at any
role if it has something serious to do with anything
below the belt. However, not only does the movie
openly talks about sperm, Ayushmann bravely
takes on the part that could have fallen flat and
made him a butt of ridicule, if not handled properly.
But nothing of that sort happened, and Vicky Donor
turned out to be a gamechanger in Bollywood. And
yes, we have a bold new hero who is ready to take
on risque roles without getting to Masti levels. With
Paani Da Rang, we also came to know that he is a
really good singer and composer too.
Ayushmann’s second movie was a safer movie
compared to his debut, but still, the setting of the
naatak company and his character was not something
we usually see in Bollywood movies. Talking
about his character, he played a do-gooder theatre
company owner who, in trying to help a suicidal
friend, ends up falling for his ex and suffers from
the resultant guilt. Here we have a hero who not
only crosses the forbidden friendship line by falling
for his friend’s love interest, he is shown going on
a downward spiral in guilt as a result of the same.
That’s quite a change when it comes to the unapologetic
depiction of male leads (remember Mere
Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai?)
Ayushmann Khurrana certainly has a ‘d**k’ fascination.
While his debut movie showed him having excellent
virility, in his latest, he plays a character who
suffers in that department. When we don’t expect
our mainstream heroes to play sperm donors, do
you expect them to play a man with performance issues
in the bedroom? What about the socalled
alpha hero
image?

During the promotions of Simran, Kangana
Ranaut and Hansal Mehta, the
lead actress and the director of the film
were asked about failure of films starring
superstars and if they think that
content driven cinema is more prefered
by audience nowadays than films featuring
superstars. Hansal Mehta was of
opinion that a film like Dangal worked
big time with audience as well as the
critics and that starred Aamir Khan who
played a character in the film.
Hansal Mehta also mentioned that the
importance of the story is taking over.
In fact he even talked about Shubh
Mangal Saavdhan and how that film
resonated with the audience. He also
added that something similar happened
with Queen and he waited for this day
where films high on content are working
big time with the audience.
However, the funniest thing was Kangana’s
reaction when I asked the question.
It looked like she was in a fun mood
as when I mentioned the word small
films, she immediately retaliated if I believe
Simran is a small film. Something
similar happened when I talked about
superstars. She tried to pull my leg as
she told Hansal Mehta that I think they
are not superstars…all in jest.
During the same interaction we spoke
about the chauvinism in Bollywood
and not one to mince her words, Kangana
spoke her heart out. She said, “A
woman who’s rich and Independent,
you always hear people say this, ‘Oh
she’s slept her way to success’”. She
also added, “We never say this about
men that he has slept his way to the
success.”
Yami Gautam: ‘Sarkar 3’ was a
great opportunity for me as a performer
‘Sarkar 3’ may have bombed at the box
office, but actor Yami Gautam said the
movie was a great opportunity for her as
an artiste. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma
the political thriller featured megastar
Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff,
Manoj Bajpayee, Ronit Roy, Amit Sadh
and Yami among others.
“’Sarkar 3’ for me was a very important
movie. I think I looked at it as an opportunity
to be a part of ‘Sarkar’ franchise,
which is not small at all. No one can predict
a film’s success or failure.”
“But there are some films you are just
happy to be a part of... I mean to be a
part of ‘Sarkar’ which had Mr Bachchan
playing the lead. The whole genre is so
special. I’m happy to do something that I
have not done before,” Yami said.
“I loved Pallavi’s idea of trying to create
a fusion with my western attire and traditional
jewellery. I am delighted to be

After collecting Rs 54.34 crore in its first week, the film went on to earn Rs 10.18 crore in its second week, followed by Rs 1.38 crore

total of Rs 65.94 crore.
Written by Rajat Arora and directed and co-produced by Milan Luthria of ‘The Dirty Picture’ fame, ‘Baadshaho’ is set in the Emergency
of the 1975-77 revolving around Maharani Gitanjali Devi (Ileana D’Cruz) of Rajasthan who loses her gold in the troubled period and

Rani Mukerji is one of those actresses who can pull off
any kind of role. The actress has movies like ‘Black’,
‘Hum Tum’, ‘Saathiya’, ‘Yuva’ and ‘Mardaani’ under
her kitty and her amazing performance in these films have
garnered her a ton of praise from the audience and critics
alike.
Rani has successfully completed 20 years in the Bollywood
film industry. Talking about her journey with a
leading media daily, the actress stated, “It’s been quite
a learning process actually because, at the start, I didn’t
want to be an actor. So, for a person who didn’t want to
be an actor to someone who has completed 20 years
or two decades, you can imagine how much I must
have learned through my journey.”
She added, “I also got an opportunity to work with
Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir Khan in my first three
films; and my learning started when I saw them put in the
kind of hard work they do. It has been a huge learning
experience for me because with every film, every
director and every actor, you learn something new
regardless of whether the film works at the box
office or not.”
Talking about how cinema is today, the actress
revealed, “It’s amazing how cinema has
changed in so many different ways in the last

learning from them has been quite an enriching
journey.”

Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra have kept the media guessing about
their relationship status for a while now. But if gossip columns are to
be believed, the two have parted ways, and Sidharth’s growing proximity
to his A Gentleman co-star Jacqueline Fernandez is to blame.
According to a report in Deccan Chronicle, Alia has gone into a shell,
of late. The actor, who is in Kashmir to shoot for Meghna Gulzar’s
Raazi, does not even talk to anyone on the sets and appears for
shoots only when called.
There is speculation that the reason for Alia’s aloofness is that she is
nursing a broken heart. However, sources close to the Dear Zindagi
actor refute the reports.
“It’s nothing like that. She is just trying to live a non-gadget life because
she is playing a character like that in the film. She hardly appears on social
media and does not read anything much online, as she wants to stay true
to the character as long as she is shooting for the film,” an insider told the
publication.
Alia is currently filming the second schedule of Raazi in Kashmir. She will
be playing a spy in the espionage thriller based on Harinder Sikka’s novel

On the verge of taking a political plunge, Kamal Haasan says he is willing
to dive to any extent -be it joining hands with the BJP or quitting cinema -if it
means public good. Excerpts from an interview with Arun Ram :
You’ve chosen to launch a political party. What was the tipping point?
It happened over time. It’s a major decision. Anger is just one part of it. If you
ask a Naxalite, anger is a quotient, but there is an ideology that you believe in...
What’s your ideology?
There is a buffet of ideologies for me to choose from. I’ve been a fan of certain
communist and socialist ideals. Some have failed, some have succeeded. I’ve
lived long enough to understand where all they failed.
Will you remain on the Left?
Not necessarily. I may have to make some adjustments and come to the centre
because people matter more. I am willing to serve, but I am still cooking.
Politics can be quite hectic. Will you quit cinema?
Politics is too big a game to feel the absence of a Kamal Haasan. And art is a
bigger sea.
Will you stop acting?
Well, if I take up a position legally, I will have to. It will be painful. I will still be
connected (to cinema) but won’t be actively engaging in it because my commitment
would be something else.
Where does the BJP stand in your scheme of things?
Right now they are going deep right. I have been vociferous against government
on things like beef. I used to eat beef, but I’ve stopped. That doesn’t
mean others shouldn’t eat beef.
Do you rule out a tie-up with the BJP?
If my ideologies are not hindered and if it is only about administration, there can
be (collaboration). Somewhere you have to think about the welfare of the state.
I don’t know if they find my ideologies comfortable. There is no untouchability
in politics, if it is for the good of the people.
Doesn’t being a rationalist stop you from tying up with the BJP?
Being a rationalist, for me, doesn’t mean destroying temples. You cannot eradicate
bhakti overnight, it may happen in due course.
And does that apply to the Congress, the DMK?
It doesn’t matter. Only that they do not hinder the path I have taken.I am against
corruption. I won’t have truck with corrupt people.There the uncompromising
attitude will come in. That leaves me with very little choice.

What is your priority?
Reaching the poor. If it doesn’t reach the last poor man, your constitution is
wrong.
And corruption?
Corruption is not confined to one person. Corruption starts with that man who
takes Rs 5,000 for his vote. We have to make people understand and end corruption.
We were once cannibals. Somebody was able to put sense into people
and cannibalism abruptly stopped.
Are you confident of stopping corruption abruptly?
No. When I say abruptly, I mean when you look at the long history, it was an
abrupt end. Corruption cannot be stopped overnight. You can contain corruption
and that’s a beginning. I might be a rookie, but I am not naive. Let me talk
about my own industry... Where do I stop corruption? I said I will pay my taxes,
I will not touch black money.
Will you be uncompromising or will you be tactical?
Both have to be used in good measure. If compromise means I have to allow
a little corruption, I will be uncompromising. That’s like having fecal matter on
the dinner plate.
Once in politics, you will have to criticise some people -including probably Rajinikanth
-with whom you have been friendly.
Criticising doesn’t mean insulting. It can be done constructively and with great
poise. And that’s what Rajini and I have promised each other. We have different
paths. We don’t agree with each other even on the kind of films we do.
Have you thought of being the chief minister of Tamil Nadu?
No. It is very juvenile when media says I want to become the chief minister.
Would you play second fiddle to another leader?
It doesn’t matter. I can be in the chorus line singing, if it is for the good of the
people.
If you have to contest an election, will you choose a constituency in a city or a
village?
There will be a time when people will say with pride that I stay in a village. So I
think I will choose a rural area to contest, but one can never say.
Can we expect a political movie?
We are planning one. Now with so many media, you don’t need movies to sell
your political ideologies. As for political messages, ‘Viswaroopam-2’ has some,
so does `Sabash Naidu’.

If you were to feature in a biopic, who’d you
like to portray?
I would love to play a freedom fighter, some
historical character. I also feel our current
generation away from it, earlier there were
so many films made.
Your Twitter bio about being a future leader
made many speculate that you want to enter
politics. Are you interested in dabbling with
politics?
No I’ll tell you what, I’m very passionate about
my country. To me India is a very important
aspect of my life. So by future leader I mean
I want to contribute to that. But I don’t know
how to do it. I’m too young to even know.
I’m an actor and I’m here to entertain and
through this opportunity I will try and do my
best. I don’t think you need to be a politician
to be a leader.

There’s an episode of Friends where
Joey Tribbiani is barred from entering
his family’s Thanksgiving celebration
because he is the unwitting face of a sexually
transmitted disease’s awareness programme.
As a minor joke in a 20-minute
episode of a sitcom, it is fairly funny.
But when debutant director Shreyas Talpade
takes on a similar premise and
stretches the skit into a 131-minutes long
farce, the kind that resorts to comedic
sound effects punctuating desi sitcoms
and stand-up comics, the result is as
memorable as a pair of orangutans gambolling
to Sheila Ki Jawani in Yamla Pagla
Deewana 2.
Poster Boys, which stars the Deol brothers
minus dad Dharmendra, is not as obnoxious in its
humour if not any less puerile.

of supporting

elevate scripts

of excellence,
a second-rate
one is
sure to bring it
down a notch or

Nobody outside
the Poster Boys
troika adds up to anything beyond a shrill or overdone
caricature straight out of a dummy’s guide in
how to amuse.
Daler Mehndi’s energetic singing and Eli Avram’s
acrobatic thighs flag off the proceedings even as its
three unsuspecting protagonists hailing from Jangheti
village pose at a photo booth unprepared for
the embarrassment to follow.
Sunny Deol plays a retired armyman happy to
shove a selfie stick in everyone’s face. The sight
of him pouting is the very definition of awkward but
seeing him do a Marilyn Monroe pose goes right up
there with the orangutans.
Movie Review
Bobby Deol’s mousy, scatter-brained schoolteacher
goes for a Suri Uncle vibe, which hits the drollest
notes in an otherwise clunky comedy. You’ll
almost forget he’s the same guy who made tinted
glasses fashionable as he picks up and puts back
dropped bits of his painfully-cooked lunch box off
the ground.
Shreyas Talpade pitches in as a
blustering recovery agent always
bashing a guy who resembles a
malnourished, scar-free version of
Sandor Clegane.
The three men join forces after
learning about their involuntary
endorsement on a nasbandi poster
as part of the government’s
public health service announcement.
With the babus of bureaucracy
shrugging responsibility, the trio
use muscle and media to seek
justice and prove their innocence
in a conservative society.
It’s funny how much trouble they go through for the
sake of a family that has no value for their word nor
seems worthy.
Also, Poster Boys never really establishes its insular
milieu to convince us of the overblown nature of
everyone’s reaction to the poster -- as though they
are Most Wanted criminals in the country.
What it does is play for laughs by inserting innuendo,
recycling gags, poking fun at physical handicaps,
throwing in a neurotic Bharti Achrekar and
hyper Ashwini Kalsekar for the sake of senseless
clamour, asserting Sunny’s superhuman vigour as
he lifts and dangles men, breaks locks, yanks fences
or needless butchery of the English language.
Vasectomy -- kaun Tommy,’ quizzes the government
official. ‘I telled you,’ grumbles Bobby’s cantankerous
wife. And even Sunny, suddenly, decides
to pronounce photo with a phhh instead of fo.
It’s only when the silliness is self-referential and
parodying their body of work, there’s something to
chuckle about -- J P Dutta ka khud ka border hai?
Or Bobby Deol’s ringtone -- Soldier Soldier -- works
both as a reminder and double entendre.
Some unintended hilarity is triggered by Poster
Boy’s misplaced bouts of sentimentality when they
liken their struggle to that of freedom fighters like
Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad
or maybe it’s just a humourless nod to the Deols’
2002 ill-fated biopic on the same.
Either way, the film’s hastily served social cause
around a ridiculously overdone climax refuses to
be taken seriously. Especially when the slogan declares
-- Na le panga. Andolan nanga.
Poster Boys’s school play enthusiasm never aims
above a low IQ comedy expecting us to guffaw at
the sight of Bobby, his wife and kids wearing the
same set of bright yellow, Hello Kitty-print pyjama
suits.

Citing an experience during the auditions, Shilpa said, “We were mesmerized with a little girl, a ballet
dancer. But from audience’s perspective, how long one can watch ballet for three months? She was not
that versatile, so we suggested her to explore a little more also in different forms and then come back

Nawazuddin Siddiqui has said he will next be seen in
director Vishal Bhardwaj’s film. According to reports,
Bhardwaj is set to produce the film, which will be directed
by Aditya Nimbalkar, who assisted the filmmaker in films
such as ‘Kaminey’, ‘Haider’ and ‘Rangoon’.
Word was the film, a comedy drama, would bring the pairing of Siddiqui
and Kriti Sanon but the actor said he was unaware about who
has been cast opposite him.
“I am doing a film with him (Bhardwaj). But I don’t know who is being
cast opposite me. It hasn’t been decided yet. But it is official that
we are working with each other. I always wanted to work with Vishal
ji,” he told reporters at the closing ceremony of the Eighth Jagran

Kangana Ranaut hinted on a recent TV show that Hrithik Roshan broke up
with her after she heard whispers of his affair with a co-star he was shooting
with in Manali.
It was in the beginning of 2016 that an alleged love affair turned sour became
one of the ugliest spats in the history of Bollywood. Kangana Ranaut’s supposed
reference to Hrithik Roshan as a “silly ex” snowballed into a full-blown
war, with legal notices being exchanged, private emails made public and lots
of mudslinging.
Kangana, who recently appeared on a TV show, hinted that their break-up
in March 2014 might have been triggered by Hrithik’s affair with a co-star.
Apparently, Hrithik had been in a relationship with Kangana, but changed his
colours when he went for an outdoor shoot in Manali and told her that there
was nothing between them.
She said, “Kisi heroine ke saath mein yeh Manali mein shoot kar rahe
the, aur wahaan pe unke affair ki khabarein aayi. Toh maine poocha
unko; Valentine’s tha February mein, maine kaha ki ‘Aapne mujhe
phone nahin kiya, kuch nahi?’ Toh mujhe kehte hai, ‘Phone kis baat
ka?’ Maine kaha, ‘Valentine hai.’ Toh kehte hai, ‘Tumko kyun karunga

Bhoomi Review: Sanjay Dutt makes comeback
in one of the worst films of the year!
Blatantly exploitative and excessive,
Bhoomi treats rape as less of a trauma
and more of a tool to create a
nauseous atmosphere of torture and
stigma.
Director Omung Kumar’s latest
stab at significance (Mary
Kom, Sarabjit) takes perverse
pleasure in a woman’s humiliation
under the pretext of
standing up for her in extended
scenes of victimisation. Often
its self-patting depravity jumps
out of screen in a manner so
abominable, it’s as problematic
as its view of mixing honour
with violation.
Bhoomi is no different from
those gratuitous and formulaic
rape and revenge vehicles that
mistake grisly for grit.
Slapping a grim subject with
music video sensibilities (a
pair of embellished jootis fall
off struggling feet forced into
a van), dialogues (save our
water, save our daughter), humouring
vile behaviour, and
item songs (a mud slathered
Sunny Leone appearing right
after a rape scene) only betray
the reliability of Kumar’s filmmaking.
Though its theme of reckless
resolves echoes with this
year’s Kaabil, Maatr and Mom,
Sanjay Dutt’s transition from
puffy-eyed apologetic to bloodthirsty
slugger has the seriousness
of a cabbage.
Dutt plays a shoemaker in Agra, who
combs lice out of his mildly stuttering
daughter’s (a flimsy Aditi Rao Hydari,
radiant complexion and chic styling
can only do so much) hair. In return,
she dyes his fast greying mane. Except
neither looks like they’ve known
Agra beyond Taj Mahal or its five-star
walls.
Truth be told, Bhoomi’s realism is as
fanciful as her designer bedroom that,
with its chikan drapes and kantha-embroidered
cushions, looks straight out
of the pages of Architectural Digest.
When the focus isn’t on the baap-beti’s
manufactured bond, Dutt and
his BFF (Shekhar Suman) get into
these unfunny drinking sessions that
achieve little except getting on the
nerves. The only thing (unintentionally)
comic about this association is
the suddenness with which Suman is
knocked off the plot.
Once Bhoomi establishes ‘all is hunky
dory’ through Hydari’s bride-to-be
excitement, it introduces us to a rebuffed
mithaiwala, a Didi-chanting
lout, a local goon and his pathansuit
clad henchman, wasting no
time in demonstrating their villainy.
What follows is unbelievably bonkers.
Forget the spineless, wedding-cancelling
groom but the callousness
exhibited by the cops and the court
is unnaturally laboured and loud --
it’s the anti-PINK, really.
Instead of concerning itself with
crime, the makers turn it into a cry
for character certificate that actually
suggests ideas for how to get
away with rape and descends into
irredeemable trash after Dutt delivers
his version of ‘Brutus is an honourable
man’ speech and bows out
with folded hands.
Bhoomi’s penchant for tasteless,
tired tropes is evident in its readiness
to prolong its brutality or
savouring a defeatist approach.
By the time it gets on to display
Dutt’s aggression and Hydari’s token
participation against a red and
yellow-themed climax featuring a
miraculously accumulated crowd
of village women in colour-coordinated
costumes, Bhoomi’s
blood-splattering, bone-crunching
vigour is as unwelcome as the rest
of this ghastly movie.

Taapsee Pannu, who has established herself as one of the nation’s most talented
actress with her stellar performances in films like ‘Baby’, ‘Pink’ and ‘Naam
Shabana’, speaks about the issue and existence of ‘nepotism’ in Bollywood and
the south industry in an interview with TimesOfIndia.com.
Speaking about the nepotism debate, which has been making headlines in the
Industry for quite some time now, the quintessential actress said, “I am a living
example of the fact that it is not impossible (to make it in this industry) . It is hard,
but not impossible. There will be people, a bunch of people, who will still want to
cast you because of your talent and nothing else. But yes, it is hard. Every Friday
is a test for you. That’s the reason why I still feel like a struggler and not an A-lister
because I know there is no one backing me. One flop film and maybe I’ll have to
start from the scratch. That fear is always there and no one is going to make a call
for me. I don’t even have a controversy to get me back into the limelight again.
So all that stress will be there and we have to live with it and accept it. Whenever
someone asked me about nepotism, I used to answer them by saying that this is
the rule of the game, so it wasn’t a shocker to me.”
This is an issue that exists not only in Bollywood but also down south. Taapsee,
who rose to fame from south Indian cinemas, also spoke about why the debate
never grabbed attention there. “In Bollywood, the females also come from film
families but in the south, about 95 per cent of the girls are from outside. So that’s
why that debate is not that big there because there are mostly only actors (male)
who come from film families. In Bollywood, the media is bigger and people tend to
question a lot of things more than what people question down south. Unlike here,
nobody has raised a question down there as yet. The elephant is still in the room
out there,” she added.
When asked if she will continue doing films down south, Taapsee said, “I am going
to be acting in the south as well. I am very happy that I have reached a position
where I will do a film when I really want to and regardless of who else is a part of
it. I think I am very lucky to come into this position. I will be doing a south film very
soon where it will not matter who the hero is.”
Helmed by David Dhawan, ‘Judwaa 2’ is scheduled to release on 29 September.
The film also features Jacqueline Fernandez and Varun Dhawan in pivotal roles.

Given that the debate on nepotism in Bollywood has been going
on for a while, we asked ‘Judwaa 2’ director David Dhawan and
producer Sajid Nadiadwala there view on it. David said, “It is easier
for an industry boy to get opportunities, but in the end, you need talent
to survive. Also, all of us are outsiders. I struggled for 10 years
before my films started making money. Sajid, too, has seen bad
times till ‘Jeet’ and ‘Judwaa’ happened. Let me tell you, I haven’t
helped my sons Rohit or Varun professionally. I got to know from
a third person that Rohit is making a film. Same with Varun — he
doesn’t want to take my help. Karan Johar came to my house to
inform me that Varun will be launched in his film. Rohit and I were
surprised that he was going to be a hero. If Varun didn’t have to
go through the kind of struggles that I did, yeh uska muqaddar hai.
The difference is, I had a poor father, Rohit and Varun have a rich
father (laughs). Of course, Karan ki film ho gayi isliye, varna mujhe
usse launch karna hi padta. I am his father, after all. But he was
destined to make it on his own.”
Sajid Nadiadwala reasoned, “What do I do if my son wants to be an
actor? Should I tell him that he is not supposed to be one because
of nepotism? This word has cropped up recently. You have girls
like Jacqueline Fernandez and Katrina Kaif who are not from here;
Akshay Kumar is also an outsider. Also, every industry kid has a
father who has struggled. Look at Davidji, I still remember he had a
scooter for the longest time jo kabhi chalu hi nahin hoti thi.”

‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’: Unknown
facts about the franchise that will blow your mind
Rajkummar Rao’s ‘Newton’ was chosen
as India’s official entry to the Oscars
recently, following which the film gained
immensely at the box-office. However, there
are many who registered their shock at the
biggest hit in Indian history ‘Baahubali 2: The
Conclusion’ not being the chosen one. While
movie-lovers made their displeasure known
on social media, the director of the magnum
opus S.S. Rajamouli expressed that he wasn’t
disappointed at all in an interview to IANS. He
said, “(I am) Not at all (disappointed at losing
out the race to Oscars this year). When I make
a film, I never think about awards. It is not my
aim. The aim is to first satisfy myself with the
story and then next is to see that it reaches
the maximum number of audience and makes
money for everyone who has put their life in
it. That is my most important thing. If awards
come, then I am happy. If they don’t, I don’t
mind that because they are not at all my criteria.”
SS Rajamouli is now a household name,
thanks to the phenomenal success of the
‘Baahubali’ franchise. While the director is being
lauded for his vision and craft, and his film
is romping its way past the 1000 crore mark
at the international box-office, not many know
that the ace director also had a brief acting
stint. The movie in question is none other than
‘Baahubali: The Beginning’.
In the first part of the epic fantasy franchise,
Rajamouli appeared for a few short minutes in
a barely recognisable avatar, as a spirit seller.
Right before the Manohari song kicks in, Prabhas
aka Amarendra Baahubali argues with
the spirit seller to give him more to drink. As
cool as his brief appearance was in ‘Baahubali:
The Beginning’, he did not attempt something
similar in the sequel.
Meanwhile, ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ has
shattered several records at the domestic and
international box-office. It has even gone on
to become the highest grossing Hindi films of
all time and has even shattered Aamir Khan’s
‘Dangal’ lifetime collection record within just
days of its release.

between past and present, it passionately
lists down the gang wars and events that led to
Dawood’s rise as a crime lord-terrorist and its
repercussions on his family, including his sister
Haseena, who was summoned to the Court
only once (2007), despite the many offences
registered against her.
Incidentally, the recent arrest of Dawood’s
brother Iqbal Kaskar (‘while he was having biryani’),
from his Mumbai residence on charges of
extortion, made one wonder why the bigger fish
continues to roam scot free. While the siblings
are obviously no saints, do they somewhere
bear the brunt of belonging to the D family?
This disappointingly shallow biopic tries to decipher
this debatable thought.

You walk into the film, hoping to understand the controversial
journey of a woman, who became the aapa (elder
sister) or the Godmother of Nagpada. But all you get is a
silly costume drama that inadvertently victimises and thus
justifies Haseena’s unlawful actions and warped sense of
power under the pretext of ‘protecting her family’. While the
intention is still subjective as it’s a filmmaker’s interpretation
of a character, the film’s biggest drawback is its lack
of depth.
The crime drama fails to offer an insight into Haseena’s life
whatsoever as an individual, beyond her infamous identity as Dawood’s sister, who dropped her
bhai’s name to settle property disputes, extort money from builders etc.

Ayesha Shroff cleared the air about the rumours of Tiger Shroff
and Disha Patani moving in together.
Tiger Shroff and Disha Patani would like everyone to believe
that they are just “good friends”, but gossip columns insist otherwise.

and Disha have been painting the town red together ever since

Clad in a pink saree, smacking her lips stained in
a popping red colour and a high-pitched, puttingon-a-’sexy’-voice
— Pinky Padosan is Bigg Boss’
first contestant. She prides herself in being a gossip
monger and promises to the audience that she
will bring to them the latest scoops from the Bigg
Boss house. She is also a persona put on by actor
Gaurav Gera.
Pinky Padosan is only the latest addition to the
long list of men who dress up as women on Indian
television and films to provide comic relief.
Leading this group are Sunil Grover with his Gutthi
and Rinku Devi acts, and Ali Asgar’s Naani. Some
other examples of cross-dressing include Tusshar
Kapoor in Golmaal Returns, Riteish Deshmukh in
Apna Sapna Money Money and Ssumier Pasricha’s
Pammy Aunty.
What is common to all these personas is that their
comedy is derived from a melodramatic disposition.
Some, like Riteish Deshmukh’s avatar have
overly sexualised physical appearances and ways
of behaving. Others, like Ssumier Pasricha’s Pammy
Aunty and Ali Asgar’s Naani rely on the traits
associated with nosy neighbourhood aunties — an
overwhelming interest in other’s lives, an obsession
with finding rishtas for their family members,
constant moralising, and nagging other characters.
It turns the act of a man putting on clothes into an
elaborate joke which exists simply because a man
has trespassed social norms by deciding to take
on the identity of a woman.
It also provides a look into what society considers
as being indicators of femininity, even if such characters
are meant to be exaggerated.
tv’S CRoSS-dReSSeRS
The phenomenon of men playing women is hardly
new. From Shakespearean times, men essayed
roles of female characters because society’s rules
forbid women from appearing on stage. Pantomime
dames and female impersonators in vaudeville
became a regular part of entertainment in the
19th century.
Then there came the emergency of drag acts,
and more specifically drag comedy practised by
men for the purpose of entertaining people. Drag
queens undertake these personas to entertain, to
be fashionable, and to express and discover
themselves. For many of them, it is an exercise
in identity.
In India, too, men have taken on women’s roles
because women’s entry into the world of theatre
happened at a very belated stage. The stock
character of a feminised, pansy man, called a
‘nachya’, came to become an integral part of the
tamasha theatre in Maharashtra. This character
was the defining difference between ‘real’ and
‘fake’ femininity.
In the critically acclaimed film Natrang, Atul Kulkarni
plays a man who becomes a nachya. In films,
one of the earliest and most
memorable characters of this
kind is Kamal Haasan’s Mrs
Lakshmi Godbole from Chachi
420. She was your quintessential
granny-nanny, complete
with a gajra, white hair
tied into a bun and a traditionally
draped sari.
Gutthi, Naani and Pammy
Aunty all employ the method
of drag queens, but fail to capture
their spirit. Kamal Haasan’s
character had an alternate persona (who provided
humour) because the script demanded it. On
the other hand, their brand of humour works only
because it involves men dressing up as women.
Their garish dressing, fake breasts and long wigs
provide material for physical comedy. Oftentimes,
what lends humour to the situations they find themselves
in is that a cis-hetero man falls in love with
them or finds them attractive, or that they pursue
a cis-hetero man. The audience laughs, because
it knows that a man is falling for a man pretending
to be a woman.
The success of this stock character is evident from
their popularity among viewers, as well as the
sheer number of personas that exist today. So successful
are these personas that actors who portray
them stand the risk of being typecast.
In an interview to Mumbai Mirror, Ali Asgar said,
“It is not that I am dying to wear a saree, but there
are no good roles or characters offered. In fact, I
am waiting for such a script where I can say ‘no’ to
play such female characters, once it happens you
will see me playing different characters.”
These characters are problematic because of the
perception they creates of men who are trans or
who are transitioning from a male to female
identity or those who choose to wear women’s
clothes because they feel more comfortable
in them. It undoes the progress that has
been achieved in breaking the notion that men
must should not be feminine, or that they will
be laughed at if they are. It seems to suggest
that melodrama and the tendency to gossip are
what distinguish women from men. It makes eunuchs
prone to social discrimination.
“I don’t consider myself to be those comedy
queens, making dressing up in women’s clothing
one big joke,” said Alaska Thunderf*ck at an event
of the Drag Queens of Comedy LA. Maybe Sunil
Grover and Gaurav Gera should listen to her.

ileana d’cruz
The petite and very pretty Ileana D’Cruz debuted in
the southern film industry in 2006.
Six years later, she entered the Hindi film industry
with the critically acclaimed Barfi!, where she made
her presence felt in a movie that starred powerhouse
performers Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka
Chopra.
Since then, the 30 year old -- who has acted in 24
films so far -- has appeared in just six Hindi films.
She has two more in her kitty, Raid with Ajay Devgn
and Aankhen 2 with Amitabh Bachchan and Anil
Kapoor.
Ask her about her careful progress in Bollywood
and the actress, who has a lively Instagram feed,
explains her reasons to Jahnavi Patel.
I’d rather take a risk and try something different than
say I never tried because I didn’t want to take that
chance. Sometimes, this approach has worked in
my favour; sometimes, not so much,” she grins.
There were times, quite a few in fact, when she
wanted to pack her bags and bid goodbye to Bollywood.
Instead, she took a deep breath, re-thought the
drastic move, laid low and “intentionally waited for
good scripts” to come her way.
2017 has seen two Ileana releases -- Mubarakan,
which was well received, and Baadshaho, which
tanked at the box office.
So, what have the movies taught Ileana?
I was so naive when I did Barfi!.
I didn’t understand the whole concept of marriage,
divorce and separation.
I felt that love has a different meaning while doing
Barfi!
I felt that true happiness should come from seeing
that the person you love is happy.
It’s more about that selflessness of having to let go
of someone whom you love so much, if it means
that they are happier that way.
That’s something that I sort of took away from Barfi!
Rustom too was massively about relationships.
It introduced me to the bond that a couple can
share.
Even when faced by circumstances that could visibly
tear them apart, they still somehow persevere
and get back together.
Sometimes, I think that is possible.
That, for me, was the most beautiful part of Rustom.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the gun for hire who has never missed
a target. He is shown to be cocky and you see him stare lecherously
at a woman cobbler’s cleavage, who has a mouth on her:
‘The fixing of your shoe costs five rupees’, she says, ‘but twenty
rupees are for staring at my chest’. So promptly he comes back
and gives her twenty, and says, ‘I’m going to stare at you again.’
Of course, there are deaths because the two main characters
are hitmen. But you don’t know, or care who died. And they all

belle likes it. But the audience is still wondering why we watched
a politician whose wife promptly removes all her clothes and gets
massaged by a male masseuse while her husband watches.
Well, there are many such inexplicable scenes of sexual violence
and lust which do nothing to add value to the story, and you wonder
where the sweaty sleaze is going. To more sleaze, obviously.
Babu and Banke watch Babu’s girl dance sexily on getting drunk.
Banke tells Babu, your girl has so much salt, she might taste delicious.
There’s also Banke’s girl whose raison d’etre is to be as
lowbrow as she can be. Her clothes and her ‘item song’ dancing
are so disgusting you put away your popcorn or you might puke a
bit. You also wonder why Banke is shown in his underwear most
of the time. It’s not like he is a Calvin Klein model. In fact, the
kisses between Banke and Babu’s girl (yes, it happens!) are so
terrible, you might wish you had taken a barf bag along.
The only silver lining to this dark disgusting pile of drivel is a cop
who has fathered many sons, played by Bhagwan Tiwari. Brilliantly
done!

Khan’s next. The actor’s upcoming untitled
project with director Aanand
L Rai is reported to have as many as
five cameos from some of the biggest
names in Bollywood.
According to a report in Pinkvilla, Kajol,
Sridevi, Alia Bhatt, Rani Mukerji
and Karisma Kapoor will all appear in
the film. They all even clicked pictures
together which were shared by Shah
Rukh on Instagram. The pictures immediately
went viral and we expect the
film will get the same response.
“While Kajol and Rani are not known
to share warm vibes, even though they
are cousins (they make sure that both
arrive at different times for the Mukerji
Durga Puja and never come for
photo-ops together), they came
together in the same frame only
for Shah Rukh, who shares a special
rapport with all his heroines.
Just to watch Kajol and Rani in
the same frame was amazing.
It’s a film party scene, which the
actresses attend. Buzz is that Katrina
Kaif plays an actress in the film
and hence the scene, but she’s not part
of it,” a source told the entertainment
website.
The source also said that the actors all
had a small get-together after work.
“After the shoot they went to SRK’s
Mannat where he gave them all beautiful
gift hampers with his wife Gauri’s
special touch – all with their names
engraved and some hugely expensive
gifts. None of the actresses charged a
single rupee for their appearance in
the film and this was Shah Rukh and
Gauri’s way of returning their graceful
gesture. The only person missing
from the song was Juhi Chawla Mehta
who has done many films with Shah
