DESIGN THE PRIMARY TIMES
CHRISTMAS CARD!
Every year, we at Primary Times send out thousands of Christmas
cards and we would like you to create the picture for this
year’s card. It can be any picture you like that you think means
“Christmas”, a snowman, Rudolf with his red nose, a robin on a
snow-covered branch or maybe a nativity scene.
Our picture shows our card from last year which was created
The picture on the front cover of this card
was created by Sam Fletcher aged 7
& May Fletcher aged 6
Hawthorne Primary & Nursery School,
Nottinghamshire
by May and Sam Fletcher from Nottinghamshire.
Sam & May won the
“Create the Primary Times Christmas Card”
Competition for 2016
Closing date for entries is 29th October 2017.
colour or paint your picture on
an A4 piece of card or paper and
Jack and the Beanstalk
‘Passing the test of time, Millfield
Theatre’s Christmas pantomimes
continue to fill families with joy and
excitement that draws them back
again and again.
It will be yet ‘another rip- roaring
Millfield panto’ states resident
Creative Producer, Marc Day.
Who is in this year’s Panto!?…
If you have seen a recent Millfield
pantomime you probably witnessed
Alex Scott Fairley spruce up the villain
with his charming comical flair. No
Millfield panto would be the same
without him, so Alex returns this year
as the evil hentchman, Fleshcreep.
Alex James Ellison is set to play Jack Trott after appearing in the UK/Asia
tour of the children’s favourite, Aliens Love Underpants! Alex has delighted
audiences at the Union Theatre with Whistle Down the Wind and the
Hertford Theatre with Simple Simon.
Jill will be played by Lydia Rose Bertie. Lydia is no stranger to pantomimes
after recently appearing in the nearby Dugdale’s Easter show Red Riding
Hood.
David Boyle will play the much loved role of Dame Dottie Trott. Often cast
in the role of Peter Sellers between panto the seasons, David’s endless list of
credits for his theatre work will fill the page …Oh yes it will!
We can also expect Christopher Burr as Simple Simon, Katriona Perrett
putting the magic into Fairy Deluxe all alongside six professional dancers
and eight talented local children.
All brought together with melodious music and energetic choreography
there is no doubt it will be a fun filled festive treat.
FRIGHTS & FIREWORKS
Skeleton Leaves
This is a fun activity to do with your
children, but does require some
caution with the hot water!
You’ll need:
A Saucepan
Soda Crystals (Sodium Carbonate)
– from supermarkets
Tweezers
Paintbrush
Instructions:
Go out for a walk and collect some
leaves – you’ll want large leaves that
have not yet dried out but don’t pull
them from the tree, there should be
plenty on the ground!
Put 30g of soda crystals into the
saucepan and dissolve in 500ml
of water.
Heat the mixture bring it near to the
boil then take it off the heat, and put
the leaves you have selected into the
pan. Let them soak for 30 minutes.
Remove each leaf from the pan with
tweezers. Gently wash the leaves
with cool water. Use a paintbrush to
lift away the small bits of leaf cell
remaining around the skeleton.
If you’re careful and delicate, you’ll
see the network of veins inside the
leaf. You can colour it with paint, or
maybe use the skeletons to decorate
your own cards!
Making Autumn
a scream!
Summer might have sun, sea, and surf - on a good year - but
the autumn months have plenty of opportunities for fun too.
Be sure to keep an eye on the trees as their leaves turn from green to red to brown – the
changes can be spectacular. Deciduous trees lose their leaves to conserve energy over the
winter months and it helps them to cope with windy conditions. With all the leaves on the
ground, keep an eye open for leaf skeletons, they can be really beautiful! If you can’t find any
you can always make your own at home.
Speaking of skeletons... it’ll soon be Halloween, so keep an eye out for witches, ghosts and
werewolves! If you’re out trick or treating, have fun, but be careful! If you’re not out and about
on Halloween – why not have a wicked evening in and make some delightfully devilish food
and play some games?
As if all of this weren’t enough, there’s Bonfire Night and fireworks displays to look forward to
as well! Summer might be over – but there’s loads to love about autumn.
Mummy Puff Pastry
Pizza Pies
Ingredients:
375g ready rolled puff pastry
2tbs tomato puree
1/4 bell pepper, finely chopped
1 spring onion, finely chopped
25g mini pepperoni slices
75g grated cheddar cheese & slices for the eyes
Edible marker pen or food colouring
Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C (Gas mark 6). Line a couple of baking trays with
greaseproof or baking paper.
Using a large circle cutter, cut out circles of pastry and place on your lined baking trays. Spread
a thin layer of tomato puree over each circle.
Pile the toppings in the centre of each circle, leaving a small strip around the edges clear.
Cut the leftover pastry into strips and drape over the toppings to create mummy patterns,
pushing the edges down so that they stick to the pastry circles. Tidy up the edges by cutting off
the excess with the same circle cutter you used to cut out the original circles.
Bake in the oven for around 15 minutes until cooked through and golden. Remove from the
oven and leave to cool for a few minutes. To make the eyes, cut small circles from the leftover
cheese slices, then dot the ‘eyes’ with an edible marker pen or if you don’t have one, use a little
food colouring with a fine paintbrush. Pop two eyes onto each mummy pie then eat!
With thanks to Grace Hall at Eats Amazing for the recipe. www.eatsamazing.co.uk
Halloween Games
Halloween Feel Boxes
This game is great fun and all it requires is a
little imagination and acting skill to pull it off.
Imagine a witch has left some ingredients for
one of her spells in a box... No peeking
inside the box – touch only! Can you feel
what they are!?...
Eyeballs - Peeled grapes or olives
A bowl of veins - wet spaghetti
A heart - peeled tomato
Maggots and bugs - overcooked
rice with raisins
But even better than having to touch
something unpleasant… is having to
TASTE it!
Fear Factor Blindfold Taste Challenge
Put out a plate of food that the team must
eat whilst blindfolded. Give them the name
of the food they are about to eat and
allocate points for each successful tasting.
It’s all in the name so the grimmer the better!
Monster teeth – sweetcorn kernels
Witches fingers – carrot sticks or mini
breadsticks
Monster ears – dried apricots
Wriggly worms – cooked spaghetti
PANTO PREVIEW
Pantomime pr
Pantomime season is
nearly upon us once
again…
Oh no it isn’t!
Oh yes it is!
Ahem…
O
riginally, Pantomimes weren’t just
restricted to Christmas time, but happened
throughout the year, in conjunction with religious
holidays or the seasons. 200 years ago Pantomimes
were very different, being mostly centred around
dancing and music but over the years, audience
participation and the Pantomime Dames were
introduced and Panto became what it is today.
Although often considered to be a British
phenomenon, Pantomime actually developed from
the Italian commedia dell’arte tradition, involving
a part improvised, part scripted play that also paid
homage to Greek comedies that date back to 400
BC. The idea of role reversal – a man playing the
Dame and a woman playing the principal lead
character – is thought to have its roots in Tudor
tradition, where a “Feast of Fools” celebration
would be directed by a commoner. Amazingly, this
custom may have come from Rome where masters
and servants would swap roles for a short time.
Despite its roots, Panto does feel like a uniquely
British phenomenon and can be baffling to those
unfamiliar with it. Apparently, Kevin Spacey (actor
and director at the Old Vic between 2003-2015)
was “bewildered” by Pantomime when he first
experienced it, prompting Sir Ian McKellen to
reassure him by saying “So many disparate
elements of theatre are on display…often
stretching back to Shakespeare and the origins of
Western theatre tradition and yet unique to Britain”.
The truth is, that whilst Panto is not a universally
popular form of theatre, it flourishes in Canada,
New Zealand, South Africa, and even Jamaica,
where Panto combines with Anansi folklore. Next
time you’re at the theatre for a Pantomime and
you’re shouting “It’s behind you!!” – remember
that there’s a lot of history behind Panto too!! Most
importantly – Join in and have fun!!
to effectively repel lice and prevent infestation of the scalp for 24
hours. An essential oil based product, the main active ingredient of
the Puressentiel Lice Repellent Spray is Citriodiol® (derived from
lemon eucalyptus essential oil) plus other ingredients - Lavender
and Lavandin essential oils, organic Lavender floral water and apple
vinegar. The ingredients naturally repel the lice and the Repellent
Spray is ideal for using once a day to prevent an infestation.
The Puressentiel Anti-Lice Treatment Lotion which combines six
vegetable oils and four essential oils, has been proven to eliminate
lice, larvae and nits in just 10 minutes. It is simply applied on
dry hair and scalp and massaged from roots to hair ends.
After being left on for just 10 minutes it
is washed off with normal shampoo and
rinsed. A comb through with the supplied
comb removes nits, larvae and dead lice.
LITTLE THINGS CAN CHANGE A
FOSTER CHILD’S LIFE
Hackney still needs more foster carers to help make a
difference to the lives of local children coming into care.
Hackney believe that all children and young people deserve
positive childhood experiences and foster carers play an
important role in achieving the best possible outcome for
children in care. Working with the Council, foster carers provide
a safe, stable, nurturing and supportive environment for children
and young people to reside, until they are able to return to their
families or live independently.
Foster carers are provided with comprehensive support and
training as well as financial support that recognises experience
and professional development.
To foster for Hackney, you just need to have space in your heart
and home and a dedication to help us care for our vulnerable
children and young people.
Here at Teachers Teach parents
contact us for many reasons.
Our students may:
• “Lack confidence at school” • “Struggle
with reading or writing” • “Find maths
difficult!” • “Have had a poor school report”
The initial conversation / assessment with one
of our qualified teachers should be a “two-way
fact find” This involves us listening carefully
to your child’s unique needs - asking you
questions also. This is crucial to us devising an
individual study plan and setting targets for
your child. We give you feedback each lesson
to enable you to help with homework and to
feedback to your child’s teacher at school.
TACKLING THE 11+ PROCESS
If your Year 5 child is likely to sit any entrance exams for selective
state schools, it’s now time to think seriously about 11+
preparations and it’s essential to have your child academically
assessed at this point. This will allow you to find out if they are
capable of passing against the fierce and constantly increasing
competition for places, and indeed whether they are likely to cope in
a highly academic selective senior school.
To succeed, your child needs to be taught and practise both the
11+ curriculum and the exam techniques and strategies needed to
optimise results. Standard primary school lessons will not provide
adequate preparation. One-to-one tutoring, tutor groups and
holiday workshops can all dramatically boost a child’s knowledge
and their confidence to face the exams, but unless they would be
suited to a highly academic school, it makes no sense to push them
into one. Consider carefully whether the selective route is right for
your child, then give them all the support they need.
JK Educate are experts in preparing children for the 11+ exams
for state selective and independent schools and offer academic
assessments for all children, including suitability for the 11+. If you
would like more information, contact JK Educate on 020 3488 0754
or via jkeducate.co.uk
JK Educate’s joint MDs Lorrae Jaderberg and Katie Krais will deliver
a free talk for parents about navigating
the 11+ process at 8pm on Monday, 30th
October at Mill Hill School NW7 1QS. For
more information about the talk and to
book free places visit:
