impoundments to vast saltwater<br />
estuaries. The refuge is home to seven<br />
distinct habitats which provide for<br />
over 330 species of birds, 31 species<br />
of mammals, 117 species of fish, 68<br />
species of amphibians and reptiles<br />
and over 1,000 species of plants.<br />
The refuge also supports 16 wildlife<br />
species listed as federally threatened<br />
or endangered.<br />
The most productive and diversified<br />
areas of the refuge are the marshes.<br />
These shallow water grasslands<br />
provide a home for crabs, worms, clams and fish, which attract animals<br />
higher in the food chain such as birds, river otters, American alligators<br />
and raccoons. Refuge marshes attract hundreds of thousands of<br />
migratory birds every year. The refuge also serves as one of the most<br />
important sea turtle nesting sites in the United States, averaging over<br />
1,300 loggerhead nests each year.<br />
Recreational opportunities offered at the refuge include bird and<br />
wildlife observation, a wildlife drive, manatee observation deck, fishing<br />
and hunting opportunities, boating and paddling.<br />

Florida manatees are found in shallow,<br />
slow-moving rivers, bays, estuaries<br />
and coastal water ecosystems. Brevard<br />
County has more manatees than any other area of similar size in the<br />
world. Manatees can live in fresh, brackish, or salt water and prefer waters<br />
that are 3 – 7 feet deep. The best time to observe manatees in Central<br />
Florida is from November through March.<br />
Please be respectful of manatees. It is illegal and harmful to harass or<br />
feed them. Try not to approach too close and let them come to you if<br />
they desire.<br />
Options for viewing wildlife are abundant and tours can be done by<br />
foot, boat, automobile, kayak or bicycle. <strong>Guide</strong>d tours are available<br />

The lock is located just north of the Port Canaveral entrance, not<br />
far from Jetty Park. Early evening and late afternoon are the best<br />
viewing time for wildlife. Boat cruises are available through the<br />
Canaveral Lock and the scenic waterways of the area. Along the<br />
way you can observe dolphins, manatees, alligators and a variety of<br />
native birds from your tour boat.<br />

Located right by the Radisson Resort at the Port, Manatee Sanctuary<br />
Park is a hidden treasure for viewing manatees, dolphins and birds<br />
up close. Surrounded by mangroves and plants, you will find a lovely<br />
cove where the manatees like to sun.<br />

Thousand<br />
islands<br />
The Thousand Islands are a group of<br />
natural, modified, and spoil islands.<br />
Sediment cores reveal that the Thousand Islands were formed<br />
when a storm-driven sea broke through the barrier island, leaving<br />
behind an approximately 900 acres flood tide delta deposit.<br />
Beginning in the late 1950s,<br />
small ditches were dug through<br />
the islands to allow water<br />
movement and fish access to<br />
inner areas of the succulent<br />
marsh for mosquito control.<br />
This 338-acre site, located in<br />
<strong>Cocoa</strong> <strong>Beach</strong>, consists of a<br />
series of islands in the Indian<br />
River Lagoon on the south side<br />
of Minuteman Causeway. With<br />
the exception of a short nature trail along Fourth Street South, all<br />
access to the islands is by boat. The primary access point is from<br />
Ramp Road boat ramp in <strong>Cocoa</strong> <strong>Beach</strong>. A short nature trail exists<br />
on the northern most island (North Crawford Island), and a marked<br />
paddling trail is in development. The islands have many channels<br />
that provide great paddling opportunities.<br />
