lockportlegend.com sports the Lockport Legend | October 5, 2017 | 35 Athlete of the Week 10 Questions with John Weis John Weis is a junior at Lockport Township. He finished second at the SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue Division golf meet last week. How do you think the season went for you and the team? It’s been pretty successful. We have a lot of young golfers and consistent golfers. We hope we can still get out of the regional [this week] and sectional [next week]. How did you get involved playing golf? When I was young, my dad [Andrew], my twin brother [Nolan] and I used to go out and play the three-hole golf course behind Lockport East Campus. Then I started playing competitively as a freshman and so did Nolan. What is it like golfing with your twin brother? It’s kind of nice because we always remind each other of the times we have to be at practice or meet. But we don’t like to be in the same group. I see him everyday at home, so it’s more fun to play with my other friends. We’re identical twins. We used to be confused for each other, but now it’s a little easier to tell us apart. Do you play any other sports? If so, what is your favorite sport? Both Nolan and I play baseball. It’s a toss-up, but I think I like baseball a little bit better. What’s a correlation between baseball and golf? The correlation is the is the mental part. I feel like each sport helps me get better at the other. Also in baseball I bat lefty, but I golf righty. I’m not sure why. Nolan is all right-handed. What is your favorite golf course? Harborside International Golf Center in Chicago. It’s just a super nice course. I played it only once, that was my freshman year. It was very challenging. What have you learned from Lockport golf coach Matt Eber? It’s my first year on the varsity with him as a coach. I’ve learned that the short game is important. It sure was in the conference tournament. photo Submitted Have you ever had a hole-in-one? No. At Big Run [the Porters home course in Lockport] I almost dunked one in on Hole No. 4 (a par 3) on our Senior Night (a 161-180 win over Rolling Meadows on Sept. 13). But it lipped out. Do you plan to play baseball or golf in college? I guess it would depend if I get a scholarship in either one. Honestly I’d love to play either one in college. What’s the best thing about being an athlete at Lockport? Just being out there with great coaches and friends. And also being able to practice at really nice facilities. That means there’s a great opportunity to get better. Livieratos, an Eagles tennis player, this summer claimed the 15’s crown in the boys singles division of the South Suburban Tennis Academy/District 230 tournament. Now, he is 22nd Century Media’s Southwest Chicago Athlete of the Month after winning the September competition. The Athlete of the Month competition pits featured Athlete of the Week selections from our south suburban newspapers against one another in an online voting contest. Girls’ Swimming Lockport 111, Lincoln-Way West 75 Lindsey Merk, Savita Chandarana, Emma Estes and Alexis Webb finished first Tuesday, Sept. 26, in the 200-yard medley relay at 5 p.m. Oct. 25.
