lockportlegend.com life & arts the Lockport Legend | October 5, 2017 | 17 HellsGate Haunted House enhances scares for second year LTHS grad directs new terrors at adventure attraction Thomas Czaja Contributing Editor Just as was the case in 2016, guests start out at the Lockport Metra parking lot before boarding a bus to be taken down a dark road. From there, they are dropped off in what could be described as a secluded parking lot before having to embark down a dim path into the woods. Along the way, they will encounter multiple terrors while crossing a cemetery before finally escaping and coming upon a 1920s-era mansion. Then the real fun — or horrors — begin. HellsGate Haunted House, now in its second year, is a popular autumn attraction created by Zombie Army Productions, a company founded and still directed and led by Lockport Township High School graduate John LaFlamboy. The success of its trial run last year led to vast improvements and enhancements for this year’s attraction, according to LaFlamboy. “We knew there would be interest in it — we had no idea how much interest there would be in it,” LaFlamboy admitted of the overwhelming turnout and response they had last year. “It was amazing. We had thousands coming from states away.” He said that the site got plenty of great feedback, noting that all Facebook and Yelp reviews were read to see what they could do to top last year’s scares. As a result, there are more zombies and a longer path in the forest leading up to the actual house this time around, and an entire new portion in the basement has been added toward the end of the indoor portion. The cast of enthusiastic and ghastly actors has also more than doubled. “As we like to say, Hells- Gate is not just a haunted house — it’s an adventure,” LaFlamboy said. A close-knit bunch The first year of HellsGate Haunted House saw 40-50 cast members at its start, finishing with close to 60 by the end of the production. The second year saw 136 actors arrive at a Sept. 27 dress rehearsal two days before the attraction’s opening night. It is a cast that becomes more like family than fellow scare artists after working so many nights together, bringing energy into the home and grounds. “It is a well-oiled machine,” LaFlamboy said. “We always consider every part of the haunted house a gear in the machine.” The house itself consists of a series of rooms guests need to make their way through by utilizing secret passages to get from one area to the next. A fireplace may slide away, a bookcase could open up or a closet might have a hidden exit, with different themed spaces designed to frighten each step of the way. After reaching the attic, guests go down a slide to reach the basement. But it is not the props and sets along the way that bring the true thrills and jumps; rather, it is the people who occupy the spaces. “My crew can work all year long building the most amazing haunted house in the country, but it all doesn’t matter at all until you put those actors in place,” LaFlamboy said. “It’s their haunted Cast members, some of whom are current students and graduates of Lockport Township High School, check in at the Sept. 27 dress rehearsal for HellsGate Haunted House in Lockport. We can only take it to a certain point, but it’s their energy, their love for the place, their dedication that actually makes it successful. “I’m just a weirdo with ideas without those kids out there.” Furthermore, the mostly youthful and spirited staff he enlists in return finds a niche, a place to come together and develop relationships and use their imaginations to create something they are passionate about. “What we learned is the [actors] really need something to be proud of,” LaFlamboy said. “A lot of our kids are not the ones who have full schedules and are well-adjusted and doing really well in school and stuff; a lot of our kids are looking for that place and don’t have that core thing they belong to. “A lot of them find that here.” Chatting with the cast Collen Knapp graduated from LTHS in 2015 and was part of last year’s original HellsGate cast. He is on the build team and a makeup artist. Though still quite young himself, he is looked up to as a veteran, helping mentor some of the newbies and showing them the ropes of how everything comes together. He looked forward to securing further positive reviews this autumn. “I’m excited for customers to see it and really appreciate it,” Knapp said of the attraction. “I just love everything I do here. … I love to see that finished product, being on build crew, so building sets, and being on makeup team, and putting the characters into the sets and seeing it all come together.” Another returning cast member is Alexa Kocsis, a senior at Lockport who spent last season at HellsGate portraying a terrifying twin in the foyer of the home, something she hoped to do again for the duration of this season. She reiterated LaFlamboy’s message of the cast being a family and always having one another’s back. She was eager to get going on the scares. “I look forward to seeing everything in action,” Kocsis said. “They definitely changed the house from last year, and there are a ton more actors. Mendoza spent last year as an orphaned girl in the library, whereas this year, she plays as Kocsis’ twin. “She’s a really, really good teacher,” Mendoza said of Kocsis, as she picks up on tips on how to be a convincingly macabre sibling. “I’m looking forward to getting really good scares in.” Elsewhere, another Lockport senior, Josh Bender, said he was a zombie in the lab and morgue last time and reprised his role as a part of the undead. His love of zombies came from watching television shows and playing games, he said. The contacts he is required to wear to give him odd-looking eyes for the part may have been slightly uncomfortable at first, but “they are really not that bad.” “I’m able to kind of get in this whole new mood and just kind of let everything loose and have this crazy growl,” he said. “… It’s always fun.” Bender encouraged those curious to come to the woods for a visit. “Just try it out,” Bender said. “It’s not like any other show, so even if you’re on the fence, just come. That’s all I can say.” Just the beginning When LaFlamboy finally settled on the location for HellsGate, it was not just with a narrow view in mind. He took a chance, getting a 30-year lease for the property from Legacy Paintball and the Lockport Township Park District back in 2015. HellsGate Haunted House, if all goes according to plan, will continue to grow and evolve for years to come. “You can’t scare everybody; you can entertain everyone,” LaFlamboy said. “When the guests are coming out and smiling and just had a good night and we were able to give them a good night and a good time with their friends, that’s it. That’s success.” General admission tickets for HellsGate Haunted House are $28. There is a portion in the house where if guests find a skeleton key, they will get a refund on their ticket cost upon exiting. The haunted house is open each Thursday through Sunday in October and also on Oct. 30 and 31. Regular discounts are provided on social media. There are also concessions outside the attraction and a gift shop featuring HellsGate merchandise, as well as work from local, independent artists.
