Ron, a veteran of the Vietnam War, was a member of the Orland-Palos VFW Post No. 2604. But his life touched many others, leading to a packed funeral at Help your customers Fall BE SMART. I didn’t even know about the program [previously] or what it was.” National Wreaths Across America Day takes place in December and involves volunteers laying wreaths at the graves of veterans at the Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at 1,200 other locations. FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT Mayor comments on White House’s response to anthem protests New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann took a moment to address the controversial national discussion taking shape between President Donald Trump and his comments, and the players in the NFL and NBA, as it relates to protests involving taking a knee or staying in the locker room when the national anthem is played. Baldermann stressed Sept. 25, during the Village Board’s regular meeting, that there is a time and place for peaceful protests, but he said he finds the demonstrations to be “highly offensive.” “It’s not a racial issue for me; it’s a patriotic issue for me,” he said. “This is about — in my opinion — disrespecting our flag and disrespecting our country and those who serve.” But Baldermann acknowledged there are “great divides” in this nation that need to be addressed and said he cannot support the president when he suggests there are good people who belong to Neo-Nazi group. “To me, we all need to take a deep [breath], I think, and take a step back and realize that we live in a good country, that people should be able to express their freedom of religion, their political persuasion, their sexual orientation, that the government is too far reaching on some of these matters, and that although we’re entitled to our opinions we are at each other’s throats,” Baldermann said. “We are two things: we’re human beings, and we’re all Americans. We should be standing up for each other, defending each other, and not be fighting against each other.” Reporting by Megann Horstead, Freelance Reporter. For more, visit NewLenoxPatriot. com. From THE FRANKFORT STATION Yumz offers tasty frozen yogurt flavors, relaxed atmosphere While making one of the most important decisions in his life — designing an engagement ring — Todd Hyatt started thinking about making another leap of faith: starting a business. Opening a Yumz Gourmet Frozen Yogurt had been on his mind for years, especially since his sister’s brotherin-law started the franchise, but it was not until after he heard about the Emagine movie theater opening that he made up his mind. Now, his shop is right down the parking lot from the theater, tempting passersby with numerous flavors of frozen treats and an endless combination of toppings. Hyatt, who owns the shop with his fiancée, said his favorite flavors of frozen yogurt are Key lime pie and salted caramel, and the flavors offered by Yumz are one of the things he likes most about the franchise. “I really like the flavors that [Yumz] has,” he said. “I’ve gotten a lot of really good comments on how much people really like the flavors that they have. I just like the environment. I like the color schemes, the design stuff, the different chairs and the decor we have on the wall. It kind of makes it a fun, festive [and] lively place.” In addition to the variety of flavors, which include dairy-free sorbet options, frozen yogurt lovers boast the healthy side of the fatfree frozen treat, which Hyatt said contains probiotics and vitamins. At this time of the year that can mean getting a hot apple cider at your local pumpkin farm, getting a Pumpkin Spice Latte at a local Starbucks (because we all know that means fall is officially here) and for others, like myself, it can mean getting an apple cider doughnut. This statement for me, however, brings back memories of my childhood in the 1990s. “Spice Up Your Life,” was a 1997 song by The Spice Girls. My 9-year-old self would dance, or attempt to dance, along to The Spice Girls in the backyard with my neighbor during the summer. We would obsess over their songs and try to learn their complicated dance moves. It honestly wasn’t a bad way to spend a summer. The British band made quite an impact during the boy-band and girl-band craze of the 1990s. Each of my friends identified with a different Spice Girl – I was somehow pegged as Baby Spice – and would sing along to all their songs on cassette tape (yes, I remember those and I had them). Why do I bring this up? Because, I would like to introduce you to a lesser known member of The Spice Girls: Pumpkin. Yes, Pumpkin Spice is a completely made-up member of The Spice Girls. The idea was sparked by a clever play on words by my coworker, and the journalist in me couldn’t pass up an opportunity to be something with that clever of a name. Hopefully there are some readers out there who are familiar with the now defunct 1990s pop-group. I personally think it will be a hilarious costume and will be easily doable after a trip to my local thrift store. And, in all honesty, I probably started thinking about my Halloween costume this year earlier than I should have. Fall is hands down my favorite time of the year. I absolutely love the crisp weather, the crunchy colorful leaves on the ground, pumpkin farms and, most of all, Halloween. 22nd Century Media, our publisher, holds an annual Halloween Costume Contest for our readers. With generous donations from local businesses, we even offer prizes during this contest. Last year, we had some really creative costumes come through and I’m excited to see what people come up with this year. A full list of prizes and details of the contest can be found on Page 7. So, get creative with your costumes and submit photos of them. I’m hoping to see other clever costumes, and what everyone else comes up with. “I took advantage of having a wet painting to practice framing... a wet painting! FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER Nighthawk Veterinary Clinic offers quality medicine with a personal touch When asked whether she is a dog or cat person, Aarthi Subram laughed and replied, “I probably shouldn’t say.” Truth is, she enjoys working with both of them at her recently-opened veterinary clinic in Mokena — she just prefers living with a dog. After working at Bremen Animal Hospital in Tinley Park for 11 years, Subram decided to start her own practice, which opened July 24 at 11600 Francis Road in Mokena.
