purple and white flowers.
Many of the plants have attracted
bees and butterflies
to the area, like the milkweed
plants.
“We want what is going
to be sustainable, of course,
in those areas,” Hahn said.
“[Main Street Lockport] has
done a great job of getting
some good pollinators here
that will help the butterflies
and bees and that all goes
into the mix of pollinating
the things that we consume.”
Signage is required somewhere
around the garden to
let the public know about
CN Railroad’s involvement
in the project. Lockport went
a little above and beyond the
requirement and had a custom
metal plaque made. The
plaque is mounted on an old
piece of stone from a Joliet
building, Keller said.
“There is a sign on the
back of the public parking
sign, but this is an added bonus,”
Miller said.
Kvedaras has been to
quite a few unveiling ceremonies
through the grant
program, and said that each
town puts their own spin on
the signage and the plants go
into the gardens.
“From my perspective,
we’re always pleased and
quite flattered by some of the
accommodations that some
of the plantings are done in
the communities,” he said.
“It varies by community,
some of them do more historic
things, some will do just
a pure optical enhancements.
“But, it’s really interesting
to come out and see what
they do with the funds that
we furnish. Kudos to Lockport
for doing a great project.”
