Sisters choose Autism Speaks
for marathon fundraiser
Jessie Molloy
Freelance Reporter
In the midst of Lockport’s
Sweet and Savory Crawl on
Sept. 17, large crowds were
everywhere around the city’s
restaurants and sweet shops.
But one venue in particular
— Cool Creations — had
an extra group congregated
around its front door, drawn
to a small table bedecked in
by balloons and homemade
posters.
While this table was not affiliated
with the crawl, it was
also being used to raise money
for a worthy cause: autism
awareness.
Sam, Jen, and Morgan
Bond are running the Bank of
America Chicago Marathon
on Sunday, Oct. 8, and are
doing so in partnership with
Autism Speaks, a nonprofit
organization dedicated to autism
awareness and research.
The three sisters grew up in
Lockport and decided to use
the crawl and their lifelong
friendship with Cool Creations’
owners, the Yukich
family, to help fund their run.
“When you sign up to run
the marathon you either have
to pay a personal registration
fee or you can partner with
a charity,” Jen explained. “I
work with kids with autism,
so we decided to run as a
team and raise money for
Autism Speaks.”
Jen works in Dubuque,
Iowa, doing Applied Behavioral
Analysis for students
with autism in a local school
district.
“It’s a form of pull-out therapy
for students in kindergarten
through fifth grade,” she
said. “I take them out of the
classroom for a set amount of
time so they can get the help
they need and still interact
with the rest of their peers in
the regular classroom.”
Jen became passionate
about helping autistic students
while she was in college
at University of Wisconsin
Platteville when she
started babysitting for a family
with two sons receiving
ABA.
“The boys’ mom recommended
I work as a behavioral
therapist because I was so
good with them,” Jen said. “I
got a part-time job doing ABA
while I was still in school and
I fell in love with it.”
When her older sister, Sam,
asked Jen to run the marathon
with her in spring of 2015,
she knew she wanted to use
it to help her favorite cause.
“The first year we ran
the marathon we signed
up separately,” Jen said. “I
ran for Autism Speaks and
my sister ran for a different
charity. This year we’re doing
it as a team and we’re
all donating to Autism
Speaks.”
Sam decided to start running
the marathon as a way
of staying active after graduating
college.
“I ran track in high school
and then did track and crosscountry
at St. Francis University,”
Sam said. “After I graduated
I wanted to make sure
I kept running, so I thought
the marathon would give me
something to work towards.
“I texted my sisters and
asked if they wanted to do
the marathon with me and
Jen said yes right away, then
texted me back, like, five
minutes later and asked ‘how
long is a marathon, again?’”
Sam recalled with a laugh.
The sisters are working to
raise the necessary $5,000
entry fee by collecting donations
and selling ribbons
and can Koozies with autism
awareness puzzle pieces on
them.
“We made the ribbons
ourselves and we paid to
have the Koozies made, but
we’re not planning on making
that money back,” Sam
explained. “One hundred
percent of all our donations
are going directly to the organization.”
The Taft School and Lockport
Township High School
alums were still $1,000-
$1,500 shy on their donation
goal one week before the
race.
“We’ve still got some
Koozies to sell, so if anybody
is interested they should
reach out to us on Facebook
or call us,” Sam said.
While most of the sisters’
funds have been raised
through social media or word
of mouth, they did gain attention
through their table at the
Sweet and Savory Crawl.
“We knew Jen was going
to be in town on the 16th
and 17th [of September], so
we asked the Yukiches if we
could fundraise outside,” explained
Morgan, Jen’s twin.
“They told us we could and
that we’d actually picked a
great weekend because they
were going to have a bunch
of people coming through
with the crawl, so it worked
out really well.”
This year will be Sam’s
third Chicago marathon,
Jen’s second, and Morgan’s
first.
“I’m really excited that all
three of us are going to do it
this year,” said Jen, who has
been training for the run with
Morgan since spring. “Sam
is much faster than me, so
now I’ll have somebody to
run more with,” she said with
a laugh. “I’m happy this is
Sam (left) and Morgan Bond (right) along with their sister Jen (not pictured), are raising
money for Autism Speaks prior to running the Chicago Marathon. Photo submitted
something we’ll be able to
share now because we’re really
close and it’s a big accomplishment
being able to
even finish a whole marathon.”
The Bond sisters say they
appreciate any donations
people can make to support
their run and Autism Speaks.
Anyone interested in supporting
their efforts can contact
one of the girls directly
or Google Autism Speaks
with their team name “Bonds
for Blue” to access their donation
website through the
marathon.
As bees and butterflies
buzzed about the new Canadian
National Railroad
sustainable garden, so did
Lockport City officials responsible
for making that
new garden possible.
Lockport City officials
welcomed Jim Kvedaras,
director of U.S. Government
Affairs for CN Railroad;
Marvin Miller, past president
from America in Bloom; and
William H. Hahn, arborist
from Environmental Design
Group, all of whom made
the project possible.
The new sustainable garden
was presented for the
first time Thursday, Sept. 28,
at its location off 10th Street
and the Illinois and Michigan
canal in Lockport. The
garden was made possible
by the CN EcoConnexions
From the Ground Up grant
provided by CN Railroad,
as previously reported on by
The Legend.
“The whole idea was to
plant sustainable gardens
and trees in the towns where
their trains go through,” said
Tina Keller, Main Street
Lockport president.
The garden has really
taken to the space and Keller
said the plants have flourished
there.
“It has a little ways to go
but it’s filling in pretty well,”
Keller said.
The City of Lockport
matched the amount of the
CN Railroad grant, which allowed
Main Street Lockport
to add a few other features
to the area. A stone walkway
was added where commuters
frequently cross, a stone
wall close to the canal that
was sagging was righted and
the stone stairway leading
down to that canal was updated
with new limestone.
Keller said they didn’t use
The grant offered by CN
the United States four years
Canada and Europe.
“Generally speaking, this
is a manifestation of something
a former CEO of ours
started a number of years
ago,” Kvedaras said. “He
recognized that the railroad
industry, and CN in particular,
consumes a certain number
of hardwood rail ties.
“I think it’s 600,000 per
year, that was the generally
accepted number, of the consumption
of ties. He thought
the way to give back – this
was during the early days of
the sustainability initiatives
– was to offer something to
those towns that lie along the
railway line.”
Plants native to the Midwest,
such as milkweed,
were used in the garden.
Taller grass plants were
placed toward the back of
the garden, closer to the railway,
so when they grow out
they can provide a sort of
natural fence line. Common
Lockport VFW ceases showing NFL
games following protests during anthem
Max Lapthorne, Editor
Following a rapid expansion
of protests during the
national anthem, the National
Football League has
lost the support of Lockport
Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 5788.
Lockport VFW Commander
E.J. Errico announced
Sept. 25 the establishment
would no longer air
NFL games because of the
protests.
“I made the decision
Monday night in front of our
patrons saying that due to
Sunday’s involvement with
them kneeling and locking
arms disrespecting our nation’s
flag, I made the decision
that no longer will we
televise any NFL games,”
Errico said. “Everybody in
the bar was in full support.”
Former San Francisco
49ers quarterback Colin
Kaepernick began kneeling
during the national anthem
in 2016 in protest of a number
of police-involved shootings
of African Americans.
Several players continued to
protest in a similar way earlier
this season, but things
escalated during Week 3 after
United States President
Donald Trump publicly said
NFL owners should “fire”
players who protest during
the anthem, telling the owners
to, “Get that son of a
[expletive] off the field right
now.”
Even more players knelt
during the anthem following
those comments, while
a number of teams locked
arms during the national
anthem, and others chose to
stay in the tunnel during its
playing.
Errico said he agrees with
Trump’s statement the players
should be “fired” for the
protests, and took special
exception to Oakland Raiders
running back Marshawn
Lynch sitting and eating a
banana during the national
anthem before one of the
team’s preseason games in
August.
“They have every right for
freedom of speech, but don’t
forget those players are hired
to perform,” Errico said.
“That is a business out there.
They are there to entertain
us, not to disrespect us.
Lockport chamber touts new location during open house
Megann Horstead
Freelance Reporter
The Lockport Chamber
of Commerce invited
members of the community
to check out its new location
during an open house
Thursday, Sept. 28.
The move to 222 E. 9th
St. — the Lockport Central
Square building — is meant
to help the nonprofit organization
in better serving the
community.
“We’re really excited
about it,” said Lisa Kairis,
executive director of
Lockport Chamber of Commerce.
“We work a lot
with the City of Lockport.
We collaborate for a lot of
events. A lot of the things
we do is with the City of
Lockport, so it makes being
in the building with the City
of Lockport a little bit easier
and creates relationships,
synergies and continues the
relationships we’ve established
throughout the years.
It’s nice that way.”
On Aug. 10, the Lockport
Chamber of Commerce
moved to it new location
from its previous home at
921 S. State St.
The effort to relocate
the chamber to the new
building was not met without
delays. At one point,
it was determined they
Our Healthy Living Expo will be 9am to
1pm Saturday, January 13th, 2018, at the
Tinley Park Convention Center, 18451
Convention Center Drive, Tinley Park
This event will be the answer to getting the
New Year’s resolution off to a solid start by
offering health screenings, fitness tips,
healthy eating ideas and more to start off
the New Year with a New You.
would find a new home
in February. When the relocation
didn’t occur, the
move was intended to take
place in March. By June,
relocation was scheduled
to take shape but it never
materialized.
But Kairis said it’s
been smooth sailing ever
since.
“We’re still supporting
local business in Lockport,”
said Ronald Lif,
president of the Lockport
Chamber of Commerce.
“That’s our mission, and
that’s still what we’re going
to be working with, [it’s]
just a different place we’re
based out [of].”
With the Lockport chamber’s
move, a new website
was launched for the community
to put to use, and
the organization is working
with a new management
system called Chamber
Master to help synchronize
their work.
“We’ve had multiple
compliments on the website,”
Kairis said. “Everybody
who we’ve talked
to about it have been like,
‘It’s so much more easier to
navigate. It looks much better.
It’s more user-friendly.’
It’s all that, so we’re excited
about it.”
Since relocating, the
chamber has noted an increase
in memberships and
interest.
“We’ve had about six
members join recently,”
Kairis said. “We are seeing
a definite increase
in interest. I don’t know
if that’s translated to increase
in membership, but
there’s definitely a spike in
interest.”
The Lockport chamber
has a number of programs
that it runs each
year that draw in interest
from the public, and they
include the State of the
City address and the fall
gala. New programs to be
Dressing up is fun with return of 22CM’s annual Halloween contests
Readers can
dress pumpkins
or themselves for
chance at prizes
Bill Jones, Managing Editor
Boo!
Sorry. Couldn’t help ourselves.
Just like Monsters
Inc., “We scare because we
care.”
We care so much, in fact,
that we at 22nd Century
Media Southwest Chicago
are giving you five (5!)
ways to win prizes this Halloween
season. So, whether
you are crafting the best
holiday costume or carving
the most intricate of gourds,
you have a shot at some
wicked swag.
Details for each are below,
but questions can be
directed to Managing Editor
Bill Jones at bill@opprairie.com
First, our Halloween
Costume Contest for 2017
features a total of three categories.
Adults 16 and older
have two ways to win, with
awards for scariest costume
and most creative up
for grabs. Children 15 and
younger, meanwhile, will
compete in one category in
which creativity is key.
We’re going to pick just
one winner across each category
from all seven of our
southwest suburban towns:
Orland Park, Tinley Park,
Frankfort, Mokena, New
Lenox, Homer Glen and
Lockport. So, your entries
need to be good.
We have just a few rules.
1) You have to be the
person in the costume. You
cannot submit for anyone
else, with the exception of
send yourself in multiple
costumes — pick one),
though families can send
one entry per person from
different members of the
family (and they can be submitted
together).
3) We understand there
may be a bit in the way of
scary imagery (such is the
nature of the holiday), but
the costumes have to be
relatively family friendly
to be considered and published.
Nothing beyond
PG-13.
4) Entries must be submitted
5) The entries will be
judged by 22nd Century
winners being chosen based
on creativity, successful execution
of an idea, quality
of craftsmanship and consideration
of the holiday/
season.
6) All entries are subject
to being published.
The prizes are detailed in
the accompanying sidebar.
The Pumpkins
Our pumpkin carving
contest returns in 2017 with
a category for adults 16 and
older, as well as one for
children 15 and younger.
In both categories, it is all
about creativity and skill.
We will pick just one
winner across each category
from all seven of our
southwest suburban towns:
Orland Park, Tinley Park,
Frankfort, Mokena, New
Lenox, Homer Glen and
We have just a few rules.
1) You have to be the person
who carved the pumpkin.
You cannot submit for
anyone else, with the exception
of parents who submit
for their children.
2) Each person can only
submit one pumpkin photo
(can feature multiple pumpkins
if there is a theme) for
an entry, though families
can send one entry per person
from different members
of the family (and they can
be submitted together).
3) We understand there
may be a bit in the way of
scary imagery (such is the
nature of the holiday), but
the pumpkins have to be relatively
family friendly to be
considered and published.
(You would be surprised by
some of the sick things we
have seen done with pumpkins.)
Nothing beyond PG-
no later than 2 p.m.
NFL games.
“It’s their right for freedom
Carberry said. “It’s just the
Many of the plants have attracted
bees and butterflies
to the area, like the milkweed
plants.
“We want what is going
to be sustainable, of course,
in those areas,” Hahn said.
“[Main Street Lockport] has
done a great job of getting
some good pollinators here
Signage is required somewhere
around the garden to
let the public know about
CN Railroad’s involvement
in the project. Lockport went
a little above and beyond the
requirement and had a custom
metal plaque made. The
plaque is mounted on an old
piece of stone from a Joliet
building, Keller said.
“There is a sign on the
Miller said.
Kvedaras has been to
quite a few unveiling ceremonies
through the grant
town puts their own spin on
the signage and the plants go
into the gardens.
“From my perspective,
we’re always pleased and
quite flattered by some of the
accommodations that some
of the plantings are done in
the communities,” he said.
“It varies by community,
some of them do more historic
things, some will do just
a pure optical enhancements.
“But, it’s really interesting
to come out and see what
they do with the funds that
we furnish. Kudos to Lockport
for doing a great project.”

Following her father’s
“So many people were
Julie also learned just how
charitable her father was
when it came to veterans.
“There were so many organizations
that he was a
part of: Honor Flight, the
VFW, volunteering at the
cemetery,” she said. “We
were very aware of those activities,
Mayor comments on White
House’s response to anthem
protests
New Lenox Mayor Tim
Baldermann took a moment
to address the controversial
national discussion taking
shape between President
Donald Trump and his comments,
and the players in the
NFL and NBA, as it relates
to protests involving taking a
knee or staying in the locker
room when the national anthem
is played.
Baldermann stressed
Sept. 25, during the Village
Board’s regular meeting, that
there is a time and place for
peaceful protests, but he said
he finds the demonstrations
to be “highly offensive.”
“It’s not a racial issue for
me; it’s a patriotic issue for
me,” he said. “This is about
— in my opinion — disrespecting
our flag and disrespecting
our country and
those who serve.”
But Baldermann acknowledged
there are “great divides”
in this nation that
need to be addressed and
said he cannot support the
president when he suggests
there are good people who
belong to Neo-Nazi group.
“To me, we all need to
take a deep [breath], I think,
and take a step back and realize
that we live in a good
country, that people should
be able to express their freedom
of religion, their political
persuasion, their sexual
orientation, that the government
is too far reaching on
some of these matters, and
that although we’re entitled
to our opinions we are at
each other’s throats,” Baldermann
said. “We are two
things: we’re human beings,
and we’re all Americans. We
should be standing up for
each other, defending each
other, and not be fighting
against each other.”
Yumz offers tasty frozen
yogurt flavors, relaxed
atmosphere
While making one of the
most important decisions
in his life — designing an
engagement ring — Todd
Hyatt started thinking about
making another leap of faith:
starting a business.
Opening a Yumz Gourmet
Frozen Yogurt had been on
his mind for years, especially
since his sister’s brotherin-law
started the franchise,
but it was not until after he
heard about the Emagine
movie theater opening that
he made up his mind.
Now, his shop is right
down the parking lot from
the theater, tempting passersby
with numerous flavors
of frozen treats and an
endless combination of toppings.
Hyatt, who owns the
shop with his fiancée, said
his favorite flavors of frozen
yogurt are Key lime pie
and salted caramel, and the
flavors offered by Yumz are
one of the things he likes
most about the franchise.
“I really like the flavors
that [Yumz] has,” he said.
“I’ve gotten a lot of really
good comments on how
much people really like
the flavors that they have. I
just like the environment. I
like the color schemes, the
design stuff, the different
chairs and the decor we have
on the wall. It kind of makes
it a fun, festive [and] lively
place.”
In addition to the variety
of flavors, which include
dairy-free sorbet options,
frozen yogurt lovers boast
the healthy side of the fatfree
frozen treat, which Hyatt
said contains probiotics
and vitamins.
“Spice
Now, that
statement can mean multiple
things. At this time
of the year that can mean
getting a hot apple cider at
your local pumpkin farm,
getting a Pumpkin Spice
Latte at a local Starbucks
(because we all know that
means fall is officially
here) and for others, like
myself, it can mean getting
an apple cider doughnut.
This statement for me,
however, brings back
memories of my childhood
in the 1990s. “Spice Up
Your Life,” was a 1997
song by The Spice Girls.
My 9-year-old self would
dance, or attempt to dance,
along to The Spice Girls
in the backyard with my
neighbor during the summer.
We would obsess over
their songs and try to learn
their complicated dance
moves. It honestly wasn’t a
bad way to spend a summer.
The British band made
quite an impact during the
boy-band and girl-band
craze of the 1990s. Each of
my friends identified with a
different Spice Girl – I was
somehow pegged as Baby
Spice – and would sing
along to all their songs on
cassette tape (yes, I remember
those and I had them).
Why do I bring this up?
Because, I would like to
introduce you to a lesser
known member of The
Spice Girls: Pumpkin. Yes,
Pumpkin Spice is a completely
made-up member
of The Spice Girls. The
idea was sparked by a
clever play on words by my
coworker, and the journalist
in me couldn’t pass up an
opportunity to be something
with that clever of a name.
Hopefully there are
some readers out there who
are familiar with the now
defunct 1990s pop-group. I
personally think it will be a
hilarious costume and will
be easily doable after a trip
to my local thrift store. And,
in all honesty, I probably
started thinking about my
Halloween costume this
year earlier than I should
have.
Fall is hands down my
favorite time of the year.
I absolutely love the crisp
weather, the crunchy colorful
leaves on the ground,
pumpkin farms and, most of
all, Halloween.
22nd Century Media, our
HellsGate Haunted House enhances scares for second year
LTHS grad directs
new terrors at
adventure attraction
Thomas Czaja
Contributing Editor
Just as was the case in
2016, guests start out at the
Lockport Metra parking lot
before boarding a bus to be
taken down a dark road.
From there, they are
dropped off in what could
be described as a secluded
parking lot before having to
embark down a dim path into
the woods. Along the way,
they will encounter multiple
terrors while crossing a cemetery
before finally escaping
and coming upon a 1920s-era
mansion.
Then the real fun — or horrors
— begin.
HellsGate Haunted House,
now in its second year, is a
popular autumn attraction
created by Zombie Army
Productions, a company
founded and still directed and
led by Lockport Township
High School graduate John
LaFlamboy.
The success of its trial run
last year led to vast improvements
and enhancements for
this year’s attraction, according
to LaFlamboy.
“We knew there would be
interest in it — we had no
idea how much interest there
would be in it,” LaFlamboy
admitted of the overwhelming
turnout and response they
had last year. “It was amazing.
We had thousands coming
from states away.”
He said that the site got
plenty of great feedback,
noting that all Facebook and
Yelp reviews were read to see
what they could do to top last
year’s scares.
As a result, there are more
zombies and a longer path in
the forest leading up to the
actual house this time around,
and an entire new portion in
the basement has been added
toward the end of the indoor
portion.
The cast of enthusiastic
and ghastly actors has also
more than doubled.
“As we like to say, Hells-
Gate is not just a haunted
house — it’s an adventure,”
LaFlamboy said.
A close-knit bunch
The first year of HellsGate
Haunted House saw 40-50
cast members at its start, finishing
with close to 60 by the
end of the production.
The second year saw 136
actors arrive at a Sept. 27
dress rehearsal two days before
the attraction’s opening
night. It is a cast that becomes
more like family than fellow
scare artists after working so
many nights together, bringing
energy into the home and
grounds.
“It is a well-oiled machine,”
LaFlamboy said. “We
always consider every part of
the haunted house a gear in
the machine.”
The house itself consists of
a series of rooms guests need
to make their way through by
utilizing secret passages to
get from one area to the next.
A fireplace may slide away,
a bookcase could open up or
a closet might have a hidden
exit, with different themed
spaces designed to frighten
each step of the way.
After reaching the attic,
guests go down a slide to
reach the basement. But it is
not the props and sets along
the way that bring the true
thrills and jumps; rather, it is
the people who occupy the
spaces.
“My crew can work all
year long building the most
amazing haunted house in the
country, but it all doesn’t matter
at all until you put those
actors in place,” LaFlamboy
said. “It’s their haunted
Cast members, some of whom are current students and
graduates of Lockport Township High School, check in at
the Sept. 27 dress rehearsal for HellsGate Haunted House
in Lockport. Photos by Thomas Czaja/22nd Century Media
house. We can only take it to
a certain point, but it’s their
energy, their love for the
place, their dedication that
actually makes it successful.
“I’m just a weirdo with
ideas without those kids out
there.”
Furthermore, the mostly
youthful and spirited staff he
enlists in return finds a niche,
a place to come together and
develop relationships and use
their imaginations to create
something they are passionate
about.
“What we learned is the
[actors] really need something
to be proud of,”
LaFlamboy said. “A lot of
our kids are not the ones who
have full schedules and are
well-adjusted and doing really
well in school and stuff;
a lot of our kids are looking
for that place and don’t have
that core thing they belong to.
“A lot of them find that
here.”
Chatting with the cast
Collen Knapp graduated
from LTHS in 2015 and was
part of last year’s original
HellsGate cast. He is on the
build team and a makeup artist.
Though still quite young
himself, he is looked up to
as a veteran, helping mentor
some of the newbies and
showing them the ropes of
how everything comes together.
He looked forward
to securing further positive
reviews this autumn.
“I’m excited for customers
to see it and really appreciate
it,” Knapp said of the attraction.
“I just love everything I
do here. … I love to see that
finished product, being on
build crew, so building sets,
and being on makeup team,
and putting the characters
into the sets and seeing it all
come together.”
Another returning cast
member is Alexa Kocsis, a
senior at Lockport who spent
last season at HellsGate portraying
a terrifying twin in the
foyer of the home, something
she hoped to do again for the
duration of this season.
She reiterated LaFlamboy’s
message of the cast being
a family and always having
one another’s back. She
was eager to get going on the
scares.
“I look forward to seeing
everything in action,” Kocsis
said. “They definitely
changed the house from last
year, and there are a ton more
actors. I’m excited to see it
all come together with everyone
in their spots.”
Praising Kocsis was Amaya
Mendoza, a fellow senior
at Lockport and second-year
The attraction has a winding path outside filled with surprises
before guests make it to the actual haunted house.
actor. Mendoza spent last
year as an orphaned girl in
the library, whereas this year,
she plays as Kocsis’ twin.
“She’s a really, really good
teacher,” Mendoza said of
Kocsis, as she picks up on
tips on how to be a convincingly
macabre sibling. “I’m
looking forward to getting really
good scares in.”
Elsewhere, another Lockport
senior, Josh Bender, said
he was a zombie in the lab
and morgue last time and reprised
his role as a part of the
undead.
His love of zombies came
from watching television
shows and playing games,
he said. The contacts he is
required to wear to give him
odd-looking eyes for the part
may have been slightly uncomfortable
at first, but “they
are really not that bad.”
“I’m able to kind of get in
this whole new mood and just
kind of let everything loose
and have this crazy growl,”
he said. “… It’s always fun.”
Bender encouraged those
curious to come to the woods
for a visit.
“Just try it out,” Bender
said. “It’s not like any other
show, so even if you’re on the
fence, just come. That’s all I
can say.”
Just the beginning
When LaFlamboy finally
settled on the location for
HellsGate, it was not just
with a narrow view in mind.
He took a chance, getting a
30-year lease for the property
from Legacy Paintball and
the Lockport Township Park
District back in 2015.
HellsGate Haunted House,
if all goes according to plan,
will continue to grow and
evolve for years to come.
“You can’t scare everybody;
you can entertain everyone,”
LaFlamboy said.
“When the guests are coming
out and smiling and just had a
good night and we were able
to give them a good night and
a good time with their friends,
that’s it. That’s success.”
General admission tickets
for HellsGate Haunted House
are $28. There is a portion in
the house where if guests find
a skeleton key, they will get
a refund on their ticket cost
upon exiting.
The haunted house is open
each Thursday through Sunday
in October and also on
Oct. 30 and 31. Regular discounts
are provided on social
media. There are also concessions
outside the attraction
and a gift shop featuring
HellsGate merchandise, as
well as work from local, independent
artists.
When regular customer
Michael Garren began to
strike up conservations with
Charlie Patel at the tobacco
shops where he worked in
Tinley Park, they often focused
on Patel’s dream to
open a restaurant.
The two became fast
friends, and Patel told Garren
he envisioned opening
a restaurant that sold beef
and hot dogs. But Garren
suggested Patel shift the signature
item of the future restaurant
to gourmet burgers
— something not as prevalent
in the community.
Patel took the advice, and
he took on Garren to manage
the restaurant, which
he ended up naming Happy
Bites Burger. The merry dining
spot opened for business
on Sept. 18 in Tinley Park,
offering customers gourmet
burgers, chicken sandwiches,
wings and more.
But the dream extends
beyond serving quality eats.
Happy Bites Burger is only
the first step of Patel’s ultimate
plan.
“His goal after getting
enough money from this is
he wants to help Tinley Park
residents who can’t drive,
like older people or handicapped
people, and take
them to the doctor, to the
hair salon and stuff free of
charge,” Garren said.
Before the duo can get to
that point, the focus remains
on assembling unique burgers.
For example, the chorizo
garlic shrimp burger
($7.99) is made with melted
provolone cheese with garlic
shrimp and paprika mayo.
“We wanted something
for everybody,” Garren said.
The Hawaiian BBQ salmon burger ($9.99) is one of the
gourmet burgers on the menu at Happy Bites Burger in
Tinley Park. It and features coconut caramelized pineapple,
fresh avocado, lettuce, fresh cilantro, pickles, jalapeño and
Swiss cheese. Thomas Czaja/22nd Century Media
Another creative option
is the Hawaiian barbecue
salmon burger ($9.99), enticing
palates with coconut
caramelized pineapple, avocado,
cilantro, pickles, jalapeños
and Swiss cheese.
“Everything is hand-pattied
and made the morning
of or night before,” Mike
said. “Obviously, we have to
make some during the day,
after we start running low.”
Patel makes two visits per
day for food to make sure
everything is as fresh as can
be, he said. That dedication
is commonplace for the
owner, who constructed the
restaurant itself on his own.
The hard work and pride
in Happy Bites has paid early
dividends, as the first day
saw the shop have to close
early at 6 p.m. after selling
out of 250 burgers and 600
wings, according to Garren.
While the burgers are the
main items on the menu,
the wings make for a strong
supplementary item to offer
customers.
“Everybody loves our
wings,” Garren said. “So
far, we had people come in
and tell us they’re not going
to [Buffalo Wild Wings] no
more.”
Happy Bites has also introduced
a Burger of the
Week selection, and Garren
said eventually they would
like to start taking recommendations
from guests if
they have good ideas for
burgers.
“You want the customers
feeling like they are a part of
what you are doing.”
While open to additions,
the objective is to keep the
menu simple yet creative.
“It’s definitely a learning
experience,” Garren said.
“It’s definitely something
we’re excited about, and
I think people are excited
about it the more they hear
about it.”

Customer Satisfaction through the Roof at Prairie Trails in Manhattan
Excellent Communications translates into positive home buying and building experience
Distinctive Home Builders continues
to add high quality homes
to Manhattan at Prairie Trails;
its latest new home community,
located within the highly-regarded
Lincoln-Way School District.
Many families are thrilled to call
Prairie Trails home and couldn’t
be happier.
“Homes are one of the last truly
hand made major purchase there
is,” said Bryan Nooner, president
of Distinctive Home Builders.
“Many of our skilled craftsmen
have been working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
giving us one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
“But don’t take our word for it ask
our homeowners,” urges Nooner.
Nancy Schueler and her husband
Jim purchased an Ashley ranch at
Prairie Trails last year. “We raised
four sons in a large five-bedroom
home in Mokena. We knew and
liked the area but could not find
what we were looking for in New
Lenox or Mokena. We went a little
further to Manhattan and saw
this home on an oversize lot with
pond views, met with Bryan and
Lynne and liked what we heard.
Bryan sat down with us and allowed
us to make changes we
thought we might like such as
enlarging the width of the home
to accommodate a larger kitchen
and we bumped out a three car
garage because my husband likes
to woodwork and needed the extra
space,” said Nancy Schueler.
“The building process was
great,” continued Schueler. “We
had a picture of a home we wanted
to buy in Colorado and Bryan
customized the facade of our new
home to replicate it. We also liked
the fact that Bryan lived locally
and that we worked with a family
company. He had a good handle
on what we were looking for even
making suggestions about things
that we didn’t even think of. It was
overwhelming but we would do it
all over again. Everything Distinctive
said they would do they did.
If anything wasn’t kosher with us,
they changed it. Distinctive was
so willing to make us happy, was
always present to walk us through
our home under construction and
answer any questions.”
Karie and Jason Emerson recently
built a Prairie model at
Prairie Trails. “Our experience
with Distinctive Home Builders
could not have gone more
smoothly,” said Karie Emerson.
“Everyone says building a home is
one of the most stressful experiences
but ours could not have been
better. Our initial home search
was for a resale home with not
much luck, then we saw an article
in the newspaper for new homes
in Manhattan. We went there and
met Lynne and we were SOLD.
“We found a great lot, a perfect
model for us and worked closely
with Lynne and Bryan on the
design and without their help we
would not have been able to build
such a beautiful home,” continued
Emerson. “We made a lot of modifications
to the standard Prairie
model which was never a problem.
We loved that we were able to see
the progress on their client portal
and Distinctive delivered our
home in the time frame promised.
All of the subcontractors treated
the building of our home as if it
was their own. Thank you Bryan,
Josh, Lynne, Jeff and everyone
that we came into contact with
at Distinctive Home Builders you
gave us our Dream Home.”
Tony and Nikki Uranin lived on
the other side of Manhattan and
wanted a new home they could
grow into with their two young
children ages 2 and 4 – with more
space and new trees. Nikki was
born and raised in Manhattan
and was previously a teacher in
the Manhattan school system.
They also have a lot of family
living nearby.
“We checked out many builders
in the area and Distinctive
had the floor plan and upgrades
we were looking for within our
price range,” said Nikki Uranin.
“From the moment we met with
Lynne we were connected - our
kids loved her and she was not
pushy. The key decision were the
layouts compared to what else was
out there. We even had a home to
sell and they held our lot for us.”
“There was also great communication
throughout the process,”
she added. We met with Bryan,
the owner, and reviewed designs
and wanted to extend our loft
upstairs. Bryan worked on the
floor plan with us and we were
able to do it!
“There is even an App on your
phone where they posted building
progress. Everything went
smoothly. It was a breeze making
selections with the vendors - they
told us that Distinctive was great
to build with. Distinctive was very
responsive after we moved in
when we had a leak from a storm.
They came out the next day and
took care of the issue right away.”
Harold and Molly Hewitt lived in
New Lenox the last 20 years and
initially had no interest in building.
“We then put a deposit down
with another builder and soon
after had to cancel,” explained
Harold Hewitt. “When we came
back to them we lost all of our
incentives. We found out that
Distinctive Home Builders offered
incentives and after meeting with
Lynne; who took us through many
different homes, we put down a
deposit.”
The Hewitts built a Foxgrove
model and took advantage of the
customization from Distinctive
Home Builders. “We did three
custom changes: We moved the
master suite from the front of
the house to the back so we could
enjoy the lake views, made the
loft bigger and added a bathroom
downstairs. Our old house lacked
natural light so we added additional
larger windows throughout
our new home,” said Hewitt.
“The building process went
fast for us because the weather
was on our side and we moved
in last May,” Harold continued.
“Lynne explained all of our options
and she and Bryan went
over everything at a later date
pretty much seamlessly. We knew
what we wanted and appreciated
Lynne’s suggestions and accessed
the online portal for construction
updates and pictures. We have one
child, age 16 still living at home
currently attending Lincoln Way
West, a fine school.”
Frazer and Linda Gulli closed
eight months ago on an Arbor
ranch. Two of their grown children
live across the street in another
subdivision and a third not
too far from there. “When Distinctive
opened up we were curious,”
said Linda Gulli. “We wanted to
be close enough to help with the
kids but not too close. We built
a ranch, made custom changes
and have plenty of room for us.
We modified the master bath and
replaced the second closet with
a walk-in shower. We also added
a lot of canned lighting; so far
we have been told that we have
the most canned lighting in the
subdivision!
“We previously built a townhome
so we were familiar with building,”
Gulli continued. The process
was fine with Distinctive, they
were accommodating and willing
to meet us after work. Distinctive
also has a web site where we
logged in to check progress and
pictures as our home was being
built. Even though we drove by
often it was a nice convenience
and understand how some people
who live further away can appreciate
it. Lynne and Josh are so nice
and helpful! We appreciate all the
help throughout the whole process
from both of them! Everyone at
Distinctive is nice and even now
that we are moved in they still
wave to us when they drive by! We
can see the lake from our home,
the neighbors are very friendly
and we absolutely love the fact
that the Wauponsee Glacial Trail
is so close for us to just hop on
with our bikes.”
There are 13 ranch, split-level
and six two-story single-family
home styles to choose from each
offering three to eight different
exterior elevations. The three- to
four-bedroom homes feature two
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick exteriors
on all four sides of the first
floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood floors
in the kitchen, baths and foyer;
genuine wood trim and doors
and concrete driveways can all
be yours at Prairie Trails. All
home sites at Prairie Trails can
accommodate a three-car garage;
a very important amenity to the
Manhattan homebuyer, according
to Nooner.
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site, as
well as direct access to the 22-mile
Wauponsee Glacial Prairie Path
that borders the community and
meanders through many neighboring
communities and links to
many other popular trails. The
Manhattan Metra station is less
than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails, Distinctive
Home Builders has built
homes throughout Manhattan
in the Butternut Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as
in the Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with John Weis
John Weis is a junior at Lockport
Township. He finished
second at the SouthWest
Suburban Conference Blue
Division golf meet last week.
How do you think the
season went for you
and the team?
It’s been pretty successful.
We have a lot of young golfers
and consistent golfers.
We hope we can still get out
of the regional [this week]
and sectional [next week].
How did you get involved
playing golf?
When I was young, my dad
[Andrew], my twin brother
[Nolan] and I used to go
out and play the three-hole
golf course behind Lockport
East Campus. Then I started
playing competitively as a
freshman and so did Nolan.
What is it like golfing
with your twin brother?
It’s kind of nice because we
always remind each other
of the times we have to be
at practice or meet. But we
don’t like to be in the same
group. I see him everyday
at home, so it’s more fun to
play with my other friends.
We’re identical twins. We
used to be confused for each
other, but now it’s a little
easier to tell us apart.
Do you play any other
sports? If so, what is
your favorite sport?
Both Nolan and I play
baseball. It’s a toss-up, but I
think I like baseball a little
bit better.
What’s a correlation
between baseball and
golf?
The correlation is the is the
mental part. I feel like each
sport helps me get better at
the other. Also in baseball
I bat lefty, but I golf righty.
I’m not sure why. Nolan is
all right-handed.
What is your favorite
golf course?
Harborside International
Golf Center in Chicago. It’s
just a super nice course. I
played it only once, that was
my freshman year. It was
very challenging.
What have you learned
from Lockport golf coach
Matt Eber?
It’s my first year on the
varsity with him as a coach.
I’ve learned that the short
game is important. It sure
was in the conference tournament.
photo Submitted
Have you ever had a
hole-in-one?
No. At Big Run [the Porters
home course in Lockport]
I almost dunked one in on
Hole No. 4 (a par 3) on our
Senior Night (a 161-180 win
over Rolling Meadows on
Sept. 13). But it lipped out.
Do you plan to play
baseball or golf in college?
I guess it would depend if
I get a scholarship in either
one. Honestly I’d love to
play either one in college.
What’s the best thing
about being an athlete
at Lockport?
Just being out there with
great coaches and friends.
And also being able to practice
at really nice facilities.
That means there’s a great
opportunity to get better.
Boys Golf
Porters fall three strokes
short of conference title
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
In a closely contested
match, Sandburg’s Max Farley
won a one-hole playoff
over Lockport Township junior
John Weis to capture the
individual title in the Blue
Division of the SouthWest
Suburban Conference boys
golf tournament.
The Tuesday, Sept. 26
conference game was held at
Coyote Run Golf Course in
Flossmoor.
But Lockport and Sandburg
both came up short
of being team conference
champion. That honor went
to Lincoln-Way East. The
Griffins, led by third place
finisher senior Kevin Bullington
(74), shot a team
total of 306. Lockport (309)
placed second, Sandburg
(312) third, host Homewood-
Flossmoor (315) fourth and
Bolingbrook (373) was fifth.
It was the second consecutive
conference title for Farley,
who captured his first
one a year ago under windier
conditions on the same
course.
“I won last year with a 78
with a lot of wind gusts,”
Farley said. “Last year,
when I won as a freshman,
I had the goal to win it every
year of high school. I
figured it was harder to win
as a freshman, so I’d set the
goal then.”
It was the first 18-hole victory
of the season for Farley.
For Weis, the final round
was very uncharacteristic of
the rest of his day. He had 13
pars, two birdies, and three
bogies in shooting his 18-
hole best 72.
“I’m usually the No. 4 guy
on the team,” Weis said of
his 72. “I’ve never been in
a playoff before, so it was
cool. I felt pretty confident
[going into the playoff]. I
play baseball and have been
in a lot of close games there,
so I felt good under pressure.”
But his second shot,
which went into the sand
trap, doomed Weis’ playoff
chances. His third shot,
which was from out of there,
sailed way long. It took him
four more shots to finish the
hole.
“My ball from my second
shot was plugged deep in the
sand,” Weis said. “So I hit it
a little too hard from there.
I had pared that hole [during
the round], so I felt pretty
confident.”
Lockport coach Matt Eber
saw that confidence.
“He had a really solid
round for us out of that No.
4 spot,” he said of Weis.
“He’s only really had one
bad round all year and this
was his low round. He’s just
consistent, and that’s good to
see.”
With nine strokes separating
the top four teams in the
conference, the tournament
was up for grabs with Lockport
still a slight favorite to
win it. The Porters, however,
fell short in their bid to capture
their first conference
crown since winning backto-back
titles in 2013 and
2014.
The Porters won the
regular season SWSC Blue
matchup between the two
schools with a 155-158 victory
in a triangular meet,
which also included Lincoln-
Way West (169), on Sept. 6
at Big Run Golf Course in
Lockport. But that result had
no factor in determining the
conference champion.
“I like the fact that it does
not factor in and that there’s
no points given for the dual
meets,” said Eber, who has
only one senior — Reilly
McAdams — in his Top 8
players. “It’s been really
competitive and I knew it
would be [at the conference
meet]. Sure it’s somewhat
disappointing. But with
regionals coming up [this
week] it’s a good and important
lesson. You can’t just go
14 holes, you have to take it
to the house. I’ve been proud
of the effort and we’ve been
consistent. We just have to
have that [this] week.”
In addition to Weis’ 72 the
other carded scores for the
Porters were freshman Ben
Sluzas (75, 5th overall), junior
Nolan Weis (80, 10th
overall), who is John Weis’
twin brother and junior Eric
Gasienica (82).
Besides Farley, the Top 4
for the Eagles were junior
Matt James (79, 8th overall),
freshman Mitchell Mazzei
(80, 9th overall) and junior
Kyle Matre (81).
In the end, the Eagles,
who were defending conference
champions, did not
have enough consistency to
secure them the win.
“There’s a lot of great
young talent out here,” said
Jeff Kwilose, Sandburg’s
coach. “But [at the conference
meet] we didn’t finish
strong enough. There’s no
room for error [in the regional].”
The conference title for
East was its fourth in the
past six seasons, but first
since it won the Red Division
in 2014.
Girls Golf
Young LTHS squad finishes third at conference
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
It is now five wins in a row
for Sandburg. It’s three in a
row for Hannah Kilbane.
Kilbane shot a 1-over
par 73 to capture her third
straight individual girls golf
conference championship
at the SouthWest Suburban
Conference Blue Division
meet Wednesday, Sept. 27 at
Green Garden Country Club
in Frankfort. In the process,
the Sandburg junior helped
the Eagles to a score of 336
as they captured their fifth
straight league title.
Host Lincoln-Way East
(350) placed second. Lockport
Township (367) placed
third, Homewood-Flossmoor
(404) finished fourth and
Bolingbrook (452) took fifth.
But for Kilbane, the individual
championship didn’t
mean as much as helping her
team capture the team title.
“I’m really happy about it,
but I didn’t focus on winning
the individual title,” Kilbane
said. “I just wanted to play
my best and get a low score
to help my team. I know that
we have others on the team
that can score low too.”
Her 73 was a season low
in an 18-hole tournament.
Still it was a bit disappointing
since she was 1-under
through 16 holes.
“I had two bogeys to end,”
Kilbane said. “That was disappointing.
But the front nine
(35) was pretty good and the
back nine (38) was pretty
good until the final two holes.
“I’m always looking to improve.”
Sandburg coach Todd Allen
knows that and was very
happy for Kilbane to capture
another conference crown.
“Three years in a row and
great for Hannah,” he said.
“She’s special. She puts in a
lot of time and is very good.
This is our fifth team title in
a row, and I’ve been blessed
with a lot of good girls.”
In addition to Kilbane,
freshman Athena Kwon
(84) finished third overall,
freshman Joanna James (86)
placed fifth and senior Dayna
Waner (93) rounded out the
squad in 10th place.
“We had our two freshman
shoot an 84 and 86,” Allen
said. “So two good scores
and Dayna, a senior, gets a
96. We wanted to be in the
320s rather than the 330s.
But for the most part we’re
happy.”
Lincoln-Way East had balanced
scoring and also had
four place in the Top 10, allowing
them to finish in second
place. Senior Hannah
Hill (78, 2nd overall) led the
way for the Griffins. Junior
Sam Bollman (89, 6th overall),
sophomore Jessica Loera
(91, 8th overall), and senior
Kerigan McAllister (92, 9th
overall) rounded out the carded
scores for East.
While Lockport placed
third, the season long improvement
for the Porters
showed through.
“It’s the best we’ve played
in an 18-hole tournament,”
said Kyle Yaeger, Lockport’s
first year coach. “We were 16
shots better than our previous
lowest score, which was a
383 and also at Green Garden
at the Oak Forest Invite [on
Sept. 9]. We had two girls finish
in the Top 10 here.”
As she usually has this
season, sophomore Rachel
Kuzel (85, 4th overall) led
Lockport. Sophomore Megan
Kohley (91, 7th overall) had
her lowest score ever to also
place in the Top 10. Freshman
Claire Ancevicius (97)
and junior Kearney Pluth
(98) rounded out the rest of
the Top four for the Porters,
who don’t have any seniors.
Kohley, who’s previous
best 18-hole score was a 93
at the Homewood-Flossmoor
Co-Ed Classic, used a simple
approach to getting her best
score.
“I didn’t think too much,”
she said. “I thought just hit
the ball and go. My drives
were good. Plus I enjoyed
the cooler weather [it was 20
degrees cooler than the previous
day] and the group I was
in was fun.
“Next year I expect big
things and lower scores.
Hopefully I will be consistently
in the lower 40s and
even the 30s next season.”
Yaeger believes this season
has been a learning experience
and the future looks
bright. And perhaps the Porters
can contend for their first
SWSC Blue title since 2008.
“We have freshmen and
sophomores playing good,
so that’s great,” Yaeger said.
“Things look good for the
next two to three years and
we’re ecstatic.”
The postseason teed-off
this week. Sandburg was at
the Class 2A Hinsdale South
Regional on Wednesday, Oct.
4, at Prairie Bluff Golf Club
in Lockport. On the same
day, the Porters were also
in Lockport, but were at the
Class 2A Providence Regional
which was held on the
south east course at Broken
Arrow Golf Club.
Both of those regionals
feed into the Waubonsie Valley
Sectional. That will be
held on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at
Springbrook Golf Course
in Naperville. The Class 2A
State Finals are held on Oct.
13-14 at Hickory Creek Golf
Club in Decatur.
Paske leads Porters at Locktoberfest Invite
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
Donovan Paske wasn’t too
happy with his performance
Saturday, Sept. 30, but his
coach was.
Paske, a junior standout
runner for the Lockport
Township boys cross country
team, suffered a stress
fracture in his right knee
before the season started and
sat out of the teams first few
competitions before returning
for a trio of races in September.
The most recent one of
those was right at home as
the Porters hosted their annual
Locktoberfest meet on
Sept. 30 at Dellwood Park.
There, Paske paced the
Porters with a team-best time
of 16 minutes, 55.4 seconds
which was good for 42nd
overall in the field of nearly
180 runners. But he wasn’t
happy with that result.
“It was not the best race for
me; it could have been a lot
better,” Paske said. “I didn’t
know until [Friday, Sept. 29]
that I was going to run. I just
wasn’t feeling it. I was tired
and not feeling it mentally.
“I’ve become more tired
and sore and need to pull
back a little. I’m pretty sure
that my next race is the [Minooka]
Regional [on Oct.
21 at Channahon Community
Park]. I’m just looking
ahead and that’s my main
focus.”
Lockport coach Tom Razo
agreed that Paske would
be taking some more time
off, but the veteran coach
thought he did well last
week.
“I thought he ran well,”
Razo said. “I thought if we
don’t run him [at Locktoberfest]
than it would be about
a month between races for
him. He didn’t have spikes
on [last Saturday]. He just
wore trainers. We just have
to make sure he’s healthy.
“He’s a talented kid and
looked great before the season
started. Then this [injury]
happened, but OK... We
just have to deal with it.”
As a team, Lockport (302
points) finished 12th overall
out of 21 teams. Behind
individual winner Zachary
Kinne (15:13.4) and fourthplace
finisher Ryan Kennedy
(15:58.2), defending
Class 3A state champion
Neuqua Valley (32) took
first. Plainfield South (97),
which featured third-place
individual Christian Knowlton
(15:55.3) was second.
Wheaton North (126) third
and second place individual
Clayton Mendez (15:31.9)
paced Whitney Young (146)
to a fourth place finish. Other
area teams that participated
were Lincoln-Way Central
(241, 9th), and Lincoln-Way
West (352, 14th).
Placing right behind Paske
for the Porters was senior
Cade Musich (16:58, 44th).
He was followed by junior
Marc Schelli (17:10.7,
59th), junior Alex Kistinger
(17:38.8, 80th), and senior
George Kosmowski
(17:47.1, 91st) rounded out
the top five for Lockport. The
rest of the Porter varsity runners
in the race were seniors
Dylan McCarthy (18:36.7),
Nick Sulich (18:45.4), and
David Krzysiak (18:57.7),
along with junior Kevin
Chen (22:38.1).
“I think we always do
well to host the meet,” Paske
said. “I feel like the rest of
the team has done well. They
are racing great and packing
it in groups.”
Schelli agreed with Paske.
“Overall we did pretty
well and the conditions
were great,” he said of the
Locktoberfest race. “In the
first mile we were packed in
with Donovan and I wish we
would have went out a little
faster. We’re going to need
energy and to pick it up. But
I think we can make it out
[of the regional].”
A year ago, the event was
held in rainy conditions, but
last weekend it was a beautiful
fall morning with temps
in the low 60s.
“It was a perfect day to
run and the times showed
it,” Razo said. “We reconfigured
the course some a bit
and the guys ran well.”
In the freshman/sophomore
race, the Porters
showed the future looks
bright by taking first place
with 38 points. Wheaton
North (47) was second and
Glenbard West (88) third.
John Norris (17:01.6)
from Downers Grove South
won the fresh/soph race.
But after that there was a
plethora of Porters as they
placed four in the top seven.
They were sophomores
Aidan Pajeau (17:09.9, 2nd),
Brendan Diamond (17:20.3,
4th), Ross Cronholm (17:21,
5th), and Jacob Hinchley
(17:24.1, 7th).
“We just had our freshman
and sophomore teams both
run at [the Joe Mortimer Invite
at Turtle Head Lake] on
Thursday[Sept. 28],” Razo
Lockport. Photos by Julie McMann/22nd Century Media
LTHS runners Donovan Paske (370) and Marc Schelli (372)
look to separate from the pack.
said. “They both finished
second, but took home the
combined team title. I’m
not sure if we’ve ever had
an underclass team win the
title [at Locktoberfest]. If we
did it was back in the days of
[Nick] Setta and that group
[in the late 1990s].
“I’m not sure about moving
people up to the varsity
for postseason. But our
fresh/soph kids are hungry.”
Lockport will host the
SouthWest Suburban Conference
Blue Division meet for
all levels on Oct. 14 starting
at 8 a.m. at Dellwood Park.
a 27-yard interception return
for a touchdown.
After barely running the
ball in the first quarter, the
Raiders handed it off to junior
running back Quentin
Pringle a couple of times in
the second quarter.
Pringle plunged in from
a yard out for a 42-0 lead
with 5:28 left in the first
half. The week before, in a
48-24 homecoming victory
over Bradley-Bourbonnais,
Quentin Pringle established
a new Bolingbrook school
record for most yards in a
game with 39 carries for 402
yards. The previous record
was 369 yards by Robert
Farmer in 1992.
On Lockport’s ensuing
drive, Karli hit senior wide
receiver Nick Ward (10
catches, 84 yards) with four
passes totaling 40 yards.
That helped the Porters
drive to a third-and-one at
the Bolingbrook three. From
there, Karli kept the ball and
got to the one. But he lost a
fumble there with 1:22 left
in the half. Senior Deshaun
Mallory recovered it, and the
Raiders ran out the clock.
“We moved the ball some
in the first half, but we lost
Tavares [Moore] and he’s
day-to-day,” Starkey said.
“We were just outmanned.
But the kids kept their heads
up and kept playing hard [in
the second half]. That’s a
credit to them.”
Things don’t get any easier
for Lockport as it travels
to face the state’s top-ranked
team, Lincoln-Way East,
this Friday night at 7:30 in
Frankfort.

with a 42-21 loss
Friday, Sept. 29, at
Bolingbrook. As a
result, the Porters
Lockport 35-0 by
This year Lockport came
into a matchup with Bolingbrook
in the sixth week of
the season looking to keep
its playoff hopes alive.
Unfortunately for the Porters,
that didn’t happen. The
host Raiders scored early
and often and cruised to a
42-21 victory in a South-
West Suburban Conference
matchup on Friday, Sept. 30,
in Bolingbrook.
With the win, Bolingbrook
(5-1, 3-1) is playoff eligible
after not making the postseason
last year for the first
time since 1991, a streak
of 24 straight seasons. The
Raiders did, however, defeat
Lockport last year 27-22
before finishing with a 4-5
record. That was their first
losing season since 1981.
The loss eliminated Lockport
(1-5, 0-4) from playoff
consideration. The Porters
were coming off a six-win
campaign last year and
hoped to match that total this
season. Instead, they will
miss the playoffs for the fifth
time in six years.
“We had high expectations,”
Lockport coach Dan
Starkey said. “This is not
where we expected to be. We
just have to keep working to
get better.”
Porter quarterback Jacob
Karli agreed.
“It’s tough to be out of
contention,” Karli said. “But
that couldn’t be a reason to
stop playing.”
Karli didn’t stop playing
in the second half. The junior
tossed a 17-yard TD pass to
senior Jasirian Thomas with
1:18 to play in the game.
That accounted for the final
score. Karli (12-of-20 passing,
108 yards, TD, INT; 9
carries-30 yards) also accounted
for most of the Porters
yards.
Austin Hoffman stops Bolingbrook’s Anthony Vespo after
a big gain Friday, Sept. 29, during Lockport’s loss to the
Raiders in Bolingbrook. Mark Korosa/22nd Century Media
Lockport leading rusher,
senior Tavares Moore (8 carries,
21 yards), left the game
in the second quarter with
an ankle injury and didn’t
return.
But by that time the Porters
were down big. That’s
because Bolingbrook scored
35 points in the first quarter,
a team record against Lockport.
Quarterback Anthony
Vespo accounted for four
first quarter touchdowns
with his passing. The senior
finished 11-of-14 passing for
315 yards and the four TD’s.
He added five carries for
seven yards and was involved
in 322 of Bolingbrook’s
326 first half yards.
Vespo did not play in the
second half. The Raiders finished
with 329 total yards in
the game.
“We didn’t get enough going
at the point of attack on
defense,” Starkey said. “It
turned into a 7-on-7 game.
They have special athletes
and were able to get to the
outside. We were just outmaned
in the spacing.”
In the meantime, the Porters
first three possessions
netted one first down.
execute enough,” Karli said.
“We didn’t execute as a
