October 2017
Dear Readers ...
Oh my goodness ... It’s October already - where is this
year going ??? Summer is over and Autumn is upon us, it
won’t be long before the chills set in, leaves start falling
from the trees and the clocks go back. Autumn is my
particular favourite season and I think Knaresborough
looks spectacular at this time of year ... we often forget
how wonderful the area is in which we live so why not
take a walk up to the castle and enjoy the views (with a
hot brew in hand!) as the leaves change colour ... or take
a walk through Nidd Gorge but wrap up well and don’t get
lost in there !
Flu jabs are already starting to be advertised at most
doctors surgeries and chemists. Flu is not very pleasant
and is so easily spread so get booked in before the flu
catches you. If you do have the flu then take it easy, rest
and stay well hydrated - a rested body is more equipped
to fight infections than an overtired and stressed out one.
Halloween is at the end of this month so don’t forget to
get those treats in if you celebrate this event. Remember
to always go out in groups if you are ‘trick or treating’
and stay safe. For those that aren’t in the know, if you’d
like to invite ‘trick or treaters’ to your door then put out
a lit pumpkin so they know they’re welcome to knock
... and who says you can’t play a prank or two on them
yourselves ???
As Bonfire Night falls very shortly after Halloween, we’ve
also included a listing of local bonfire activities so you
can start your planning early !
We’d like to welcome Christians and Donkeys Years
Antiques on Silver Street to Knaresborough - I’m sure
you’ll all pop along and offer them a warm welcome too !
Don’t forget our shop local Christmas challenge - see
how many of your gifts and foods you can source locally
- there’s only 85 days till from the start of this month left
... time’s a ticking folks g
It only takes YOU to start a trend!
Shop local ... Eat local ...
Spend time local !
Until next month ...
Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre – Gardening week
Henshaws are looking for some volunteers to help with their gardening week from
Mon 23 rd Oct-Sun 29 th Oct. They’ll be clearing their garden before work starts on
the next stage of the new sensory garden so if you, or anyone you know, has green
fingers (or simply likes pulling up weeds or tidying up) please email fundraising@henshaws.org.uk or call
01423 541 888 to offer a hand.
Knaresborough & District Men’s Forum
The Knaresborough & District Men’s Forum provides regular contact between members, retired gents
from all walks of life, in a friendly atmosphere where all are made welcome. There is no joining or
membership fee so the only layout is £2 should you attend a talk. There is also the opportunity for
further social contact with regular monthly inexpensive lunches at the lovely Dower House Hotel and an
annual day-trip. They had a steady influx of new members last year and are hoping that trend continues.
This year sees the start of their forty-eighth season, a half century beckons.
The groups new Chairman, Alan Pitchfork, began his three-year tenure following the AGM in April,
assisted by Vice-Chairman Tony Martin and the rest of the ten-strong committee including three new
members. Alan is looking forward to the new season of weekly talks commencing 3rd October, ending
with the last on 17th April next year. He expects a good turnout of members as the attendances last
season were regularly above 80. Alan says ”besides a programme of interesting talks each Tuesday
morning on diverse topics there is also the social aspect of the Forum”.
If you’d like to attend any of their meetings, just pop along to Knaresborough House on any given Tuesday
morning at 10.15am.
Mother Shiptons Statue
Mother Shiptons lifesize bronze statue was recently unveiled in Knaresborough
Market Place - our fair towns most famous celebrity, the prophetess and
soothsayer. Mother Shipton was born half a millennium ago and lived her life on
the opposite river bank to the town in a small cave. That cave is of course today a
tourist hotspot. We all know it. She really is famous throughout the world though
as England’s greatest prophetess. Shipton allegedly foretold numerous things
including, according to Samuel Pepys, the Great Fire of London in 1666!
The statue was primarily funded by the George A Moore Foundation along with additional fund raising by
Knaresborough & District Mens Forum.
A coloured brochure will soon be available to purchase, telling the whole Mother Shipton story from start
to finish right up to this day’s events with details of donors and fundraising activities - keep an eye out in
our local shops to get your copy!
Marie Curie Collection Box Co-Ordinators Needed
Marie Curie is looking to recruit collection box co-ordinators to cover different
areas of Harrogate and Knaresborough to support the charity’s work by
organising and growing a new collection tin campaign in the local community.
This is a wonderful way to get out and about in the community.
Collection box co-ordinator role is voluntary and basically involves asking local shops and businesses if
they would have a Marie Curie collection box. Then every few months – or when needed you collect the
box, count and bank the donations and replace the tin with an empty one.
The positions are flexible and volunteers can select the geographical area they cover and the number of
hours they volunteer each month. We currently only have 15 tins out in the whole of Harrogate – so we’d
love to increase that – but we need your help.
Maybe you own a business and would like one of our tins ? We are also keen to hear from local businesses
such as newsagents, supermarkets, post offices, petrol stations, schools, pubs, doctors surgeries and
cafes if they are interested in supporting the charity by displaying a collection tin.
All their volunteers are provided with photo IDs and are all registered with the charity to ensure the tins
are collected by the correct people.
Marie Curie has approximately 13,000 registered volunteers including those supporting shops, hospices
and fundraising and more than 9,455 people volunteer with the charity on a regular basis. Thanks to the
incredible support of Marie Curie volunteers in the past year, the charity’s:
• Hospices supported 8,739 people and their families
• Helper volunteers made 8,800 visits to 9788 people
• Shops raised £2.6 million for vital care and support
• Fundraising groups raised a further £4.5 million.
If you would like to become a part of this or would like further information about volunteering
or fundraising opportunities then please contact Gemma Hewitt 01904 755 260, email
gemma.hewitt@mariecurie.org.uk or visit www.mariecurie.org.uk
Gardening Tips
When replanting your beds for spring and winter flowering use Pansy, Polyanthus,
Wall flowers or for a milder winter and protected areas (such as pots near a front
door) a wider variety of plants are available that you would not normally plant out
in the flower bed. Plants that could be used now include primrose, cherianthus,
violas, cinerana maritina, solanium, semperium, alpine or mini-cyclamen, bellis or
forget-me-not.
Cut back old flower stems and divide older herbaceous plants. Remove all perennial weeds. Protect tender
perennials with a peat covering. Some plants eg. garden mums can be left with their summer growth to
protect them through the winter, then cut back as the new growth appears in the spring.
To store potatoes remove surplus soil, dry slightly then put in plastic pots or containers covering with
sand or peaty soil. Cover the top of the containers with vermin proof covers.
Do not cut the lawns too short or moss will grow faster than the grass. Manage removal of moss to give
the grass the opportunity to grow.
We would love to receive feedback on the tips that we have given throughout the year. Any comments
welcome, please find contacts below.
Now is the time to prepare for our late show held at Countryside Live. Not only do we show produce there
are also sections on cakes, preserves and handicrafts. There is also a section for children. You do not
need to be a member to enter the shows. The schedule for the show can be found on our website.
Why not pop along to one of our next meetings ?
You can also come to our meetings held at on the third Wednesday of the month to get advice from
other gardeners. We have a varied programme for the coming year including:
18th October 2017 talk by Clifford Cain from Fruitscape ‘Getting the best from Your Fruit Trees’
15th November 2017 talk by Peter Williams ‘Wonderful Weeds’
Spotlight on Malta
with Knaresborough Travel
Having just returned from the Beautiful Islands of Malta and Gozo, I
thought I would share a little bit about these islands.
Blessed with a mild climate and set in the crystal waters of the
Mediterranean. Malta and its sister islands of Gozo and Comino offer you
a memorable experience. Complete relaxation can be combined with the
exploration of the islands’ many cultural, artistic and natural treasures.
Long considered to be a microcosm of the Mediterranean and a favourite
with travellers who seek an authentic island experience, these islands
offer an impressive range of historical and cultural sites, together with
a wide spectrum of activities, making Malta a truly unique year-round
holiday destination.
Malta has managed to strike the right balance between traditional
hospitality and a cosmopolitan vibe with a wealth of different
accommodation to choose from, apartments and private villas to some
beautiful 5* hotels. Its capital Valetta is also the starting point for many
cruises around the med, so makes an ideal cruise and stay option.
Must- See’s on a Trip to Malta
A trip to the Mdina, Malta’s Medieval capital is a must. The history of Mdina and its suburb Rabat
is as old and as chequered as the history of Malta itself. The origins of Mdina can be traced back
to more than 4,000 years. Still home to Malta’s noble families, their impressive palaces line its
narrow, shady streets. It is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city and unusual
in its mix of medieval and Baroque architecture. Lamp lit by night, Mdina transforms itself into
the ‘Silent City’.
Take a trip to the picturesque Blue Grotto and its neighbouring system of caverns that mirror the
stunning phosphorescent colours of the underwater flora. The Blue Grotto, located near “Wied
iz-Zurrieq” - south of the town of Zurrieq, is a popular dive site because of the crystal-clear azure
waters. The site also featured in the film Troy (2004) starring Brad Pitt.
Take the short ferry crossing to Gozo. Enjoy a tour of the Citadel;
a small fortified city and citadel which lies in the heart of Victoria
on the island of Gozo, Malta. The area has been inhabited since
the Bronze Age, and in the medieval era it was known as the Gran
Castello.
Visit Dwerja; the area where up until a few months ago the famous
Azure Window stood - an impressive natural arch which stood
twenty metres high. The landscape is still incredibly beautiful and
you can view the Inland Sea - a secluded bathing pool with crystal
clear waters surrounded by sheer cliff faces - perfect for snorkellers and divers.
Visit Valetta and take in the Upper Barrakka Gardens; a beautiful
public garden. The gardens offer a stunning panoramic view of
the Grand Harbour and date back to 1661, when it was a private
garden of the Italian Knights. Visit St John’s Co-Cathedral. The
jaw dropping interior elaborately adorned by Mattia Preti is widely
considered to be the best example of baroque style anywhere
in Europe. The magnificent Cathedral is also home to the only
signed work and largest painting by Caravaggio.
My name is Sarah Gill your personal travel consultant based in Knaresborough. With 20 years in
the travel industry, I have built up a wealth of knowledge, experience and contacts. I am also an
Don’t forget, if you
are going out ‘trick or
treating’ remember
the basic rules :
1. Only houses with lit
pumpkins outside should
be approached as not
everyone
celebrates
Halloween and you
don’t want to go scaring
someone elderly by accident.
2. NEVER go out alone ! Always stay in a group or
buddy-up for safety.
Horoscopes
by James Christie : for details/private readings phone
01423 339 770
ARIES (Mar 20 - Apr 19) : A quiet mood of determination
helps you to focus on one issue at a time, and as such, a lot of
niggling frustrations are resolved over the course of the month.
Relationships seem stable but maybe you could do something
to spice things up a bit, especially around the 14 th or 15 th when
a little ripple of excitement makes its presence felt.
TAURUS (Apr 20 - May 21) : Well, the summer has gone and
here you are, battling into another winter. Despite the weight
of SAD your mood may well be brighter and more upbeat than
usual. There are plans afoot and things to look forward to! On
a practical level, new banking routines should start working
for you and will instil a new degree of confidence.
GEMINI (May 22 - Jun 21) : Many of September’s concerns
carry on into October in the sense that while there is an exciting
romantic energy for some, parents of teenage children may
still feel a degree of concern for their offspring. Some awkward
choices in connection with jobs will need to be made around
the 22 nd but overall the financial outlook is reasonably stable.
CANCER (Jun 22 - Jul 23) : Some legal aspects or inner feelings
of injustice begin to be mitigated and there is a new wave of
energy filtering in from the 13 th or 14 th onwards. Health issues
should be improving, with some good news coming your way
during the 3 rd week. Finances improve towards the month end
and a sum of money that has been owed to you will now be paid.
LEO (Jul 24 - Aug 23) : Hard work brings high reward! This
philosophy can be applied to your business and professional
life and also to any romantic and sexual agendas. Property is
an open subject for discussion and even overseas investments
will be relevant for some. Financial security is the bedrock for
emotional security and progress will be made in both areas.
VIRGO (Aug 24 - Sep 23) : Someone else’s problems or
misfortune will slow you down and necessitate a change
of plans, especially in connection with work. In an odd way,
this could be to your advantage if it makes you look at other
pathways forwards. Business meetings and deals made around
the 16 th or 17 th will have some long term beneficial effect.
LIBRA (Sep 24 – Oct 22) : I wouldn’t describe your mood
as being smug … but … you’re feeling pretty pleased with
yourself! A number of problems and uncertainties will resolved
in your favour and you should be enjoying some bright feelings
of freedom and fresh confidence. Although it’s a bit late for
summer holidays, there will be a few nights spent in nice hotels;
this coincides with some major boost in your social life.
SCORPIO (Oct 23 - Nov 22) : This is one of those months
when you seem to benefit from the best of both worlds.
Romance and emotional relationships bring some extra
quality of delight and excitement, while at the same time there
is some change and improvement in all things connected with
work and careers. In any decisions of choices, go with gut
feelings and trust your intuition.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23 - Dec 22) : As is frequently the case
lately, current events are dominated by your concern for the
welfare of others. This is both inevitable and commendable, but
you must not lose sight of the fact that there are other things
in life that need some of your time and attention. You are not
totally defined by your sense of familial duty and loyalty.
CAPRICORN (Dec 23 - Jan 20) : A note of caution. This is
not the best of times to be impulsive or to go practical and
pragmatic, and even if you don’t like the sound of some of
it, pay heed to the advice you may be given at this time –
especially any kind of professional advice.
AQUARIUS (Jan 21 - Feb 18) : Impulsive actions raise a few
eyebrows but bring lots of fun as you break free from old
restraints and start re-writing your own personal rule book. You
go against type and expectation and get a huge kick out of doing
it. Need a new car? Fine, forget the Ford Fiesta - buy the Mazda
MX5! A new suit? Well, what’s wrong with blue suede and flares?
PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 19) : Some quiet thoughts. Is a current
relationship something just for the here and now, or do you
see it as something which could develop into a long term
commitment? Your answer to this question will dictate your
outlook and attitude over the next few weeks ... you need to be
careful not to rock the boat while you’re making up your mind.
Cloudy2Clear Windows
– Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy
few months for
Cloudy2Clear Windows.
The company which
specialises in repairing
windows which are
steamed up, broken or
damaged by replacing
the panes – not the
frames has grown
rapidly as homeowners
take advantage of their
services.
Managing Director
Paul McGeechan feels
that it’s all about service.
‘Our product is simple.
If your double glazing is
misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction
of the cost of a new
window, in any type of
frame, and with a new
5 year guarantee. But
it’s not just about saving
people money, although
that obviously helps.
Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year
and I honestly feel that
during the good times a
minority perhaps didn’t
focus on customer care
as much as they should
have done. We make sure
we turn up when we say
we will, do the job the
customer requires and
leave their house as clean
as a whistle. I often get
comments back from
customers on how they
really didn’t expect that
sort of service which,
in a way, is very sad for
the service industry as a
whole.’
Cloudy2Clear service
the Knaresborough,
Harrogate and Ripon areas
and Paul is finding that
his approach is a major
factor in his success.‘The
truth is that it’s not just
the personal satisfaction
that I get from doing a
good job but also it makes
good business sense. I get
a huge amount of business
from friends and family of
people I’ve done work for,
Chocolate Orange Pudding
Chocolate and
orange are
perfect flavour
partners and these
lovely individual
puddings taste
delicious served
warm with custard
or cream.
Ingredients:
• 3 small
clementines
or satsumas,
thinly sliced
• 175g unsalted butter, softened
- plus extra for greasing
• 175g caster sugar
• 3 large eggs, beaten
• 125g self-raising flour
• 50g cocoa powder, sifted
• 1 tbsp fresh orange juice
• 2 tsp orange zest
• Custard or cream, to serve
Ready in 1hr 30 mins
Makes 6
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas
mark 4. Butter and line the bases of 6 x 175ml
metal pudding basins with circles of baking
parchment. Place a slice of clementine or
satsuma in the base of each basin and press
2-3 slices around the sides.
2. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and, using
an electric mixer, beat until pale and fluffy.
Gradually beat in the eggs then sift over the
flour and cocoa powder and fold into the
creamed mixture with the orange juice and
zest.
3. Divide the mixture between the pudding basins
and cover each with a square of pleated,
buttered foil, scrunching it tightly around the
sides of each basin. Transfer to a roasting tin
and pour in enough boiling water from a kettle
to reach halfway up the sides of the basins.
4. Bake for 1 hour, until the puddings have risen
and are firm to the touch, and a skewer inserted
through the foil of one of the puddings comes
out clean. Turn out and serve with custard or
cream.
TIP : You can cook the puddings a few hours
before serving then simply re-heat in the
microwave. Turn out onto a microwave plate
and reheat three at a time on High for 30-45
seconds.
Knaresborough’s Mad Milkman
Do you really know who’s
delivering your milk ?
We like to go to Barford Raceway over at
Barnard Castle several times a year for stock
car and banger racing, classic car racing and
caravan racing. It was at our last visit that we
noticed a car whizzing around the track with
‘Knaresborough’s Mad Milkman’ on the side!
You can imagine our surprise at meeting a very
local chap racing there!!!
Ross ‘Crag Rat’ Taylor is a regular figure around
the Knaresborough area... he may even deliver
your milk ! But did you know this former King
James student also races vintage Ford cars all
over the country?
Ross had been watching heritage and F2 stock
car racing for many years. When his brother
bought and started racing his own F2 stock car
he helped out. It was always something Ross
wanted to do himself but buying a car for racing
isn’t exactly the cheapest hobby.
Back in 2009, the opportunity arose to actually
drive a car on his favourite shale track at Belle
Vue in Manchester after his brother had broken
his wrist and needed a driver to replace him. All
it took was that one drive - Ross was so totally
hooked on the driving side of the sport he just
had to save for his own car and eventually
bought a Mark Taylor F2 (formula 2) stock car.
Having raced the F2 stock cars up until 2012,
Ross started spending more time with the
heritage racing cars and fell completely for the
romance and thrills of racing old school style.
After winning his first heritage race at Coventry
in 2013, Ross
then went on to
win an impressive
15 trophies over
the next 4 year.
Every car also has
the same 1172 side
valve 100e original
Ford petrol engine too
and deep profile tyres
to mimic the original
1950s style.
Although it is incredibly
competitive on the
track, off the track, the camaraderie is amazing.
It doesn’t matter what happens on the track, in
the pits everyone is just one big family. After
Ross blew up his engine one week, it meant he
was going to miss the next meeting. Another
driver convinced Ross to bring his engineless
car to the meeting anyway and gave him a new
engine. Several drivers worked together to get
the engine changed over as quickly as possible
so that he could race. At another race, his
chasis broke. One of the drivers lived locally so
that evening they towed his car back, fabricated
a new part and fixed Ross’s car so he was back
racing again the very next morning. No matter
what falls off your car during a race, you can
bet someone will have spare! The other drivers
never want anything in return ... they just know
that they are all there for each other and that
the favour will be returned when needed.
If you’re thinking of getting into this sport,
the best way to learn about the cars is to
actually get a cheap old Ford car and learn
how the 1950s tech works as it’s nothing
like the modern cars on the road today. Visit
www.heritagef2stockcars.org where you can
find out more about the sport and may even
find heritage cars for sale.
Having spoken to a few of the other drivers, it
seems that once you drive a heritage racing
car, you’re going to be doing it forever! Infact,
several drivers had already retired from racing
only to become re-hooked by the heritage
beauties.
Ross reckons
‘heritage car racing
is the most fun you can have
with your trousers on!’
If you’d like to find
out if that’s true then
head on down to
Belle Vue Speedway
in Manchester on 5th
November for the
grand finale of heritage
racing - North ‘v’
South. If you’d like to
know more or book tickets please go to their
website www.bellevueaces.co.
If you’d like to sponsor Ross and have
your name or business feature on his car
and van as they tour all over the country,
please get in touch via his facebook page
Including one
whilst we watched
that day at
Barford Raceway!
Did you know that ALL heritage racing cars
must have an original 1950s Ford chassis and
be either the Ford Poplar or Model Y body? www.facebook.com/ross.taylor.9085.
Techie Tips : Password Protection
We all know our passwords probably aren’t strong enough, but remembering complex passwords is difficult.
The solution? A password manager. Apps such as 1Password or LastPass create a secure vault to store
passwords on your computer, and when they’re needed they’re filled out automatically. Best of all, you can
synchronise passwords across your various devices, so a password saved to your computer is available on
your phone. Apple offers its service via iCloud Keychain, allowing you to store and sync passwords between
Macs, iPads and iPhones.
The real benefit of these services is that they generate really strong passwords, so you don’t have to come
up with them yourself or remember impossible-sounding combinations of letters and characters. But don’t
forget the golden rule: never use the same password on more than one site or service.
Bonfire Night Activities
Guy Fawkes night is soon upon us.... “remember, remember, the 5th of November”. Most of you know
that the words are from a nursery rhyme created so that future generations would never forgot
that on the 5th November of 1605, Guy Fawkes was caught before he could explode the Houses of
Parliament!
As tradition goes, we celebrate with fireworks and/or a bonfire, here are a few to choose from taking
place locally: (prices and timings may vary)
FRIDAY 3 rd NOVEMBER
• Aspin Park Primary PTA Fireworks Night, Knaresborough (from 6pm, £7.50 family, £2.50 adults, £1
