What is Collagen?<br />
Collagen is a protein that is naturally produced by the body to give the skin its<br />

Wildlife cameras catch<br />
a look at the nocturnal<br />
visitors to the ALLotments<br />
The Allotments have hosted an open day and last<br />
September was pleased to welcome a Bat Expert<br />
who spoke knowledgeably about bats in general and<br />
brought along specialist bat detection equipment.<br />
All those present thought the whole evening was<br />
fantastic. Since then bat boxes have been installed in<br />
the Moss Row woodland situated where the bat expert<br />
recommended. The Cafod boxes are dual purpose bat<br />
and bird boxes and are the prototype to the flat-pack<br />
ones now being made by volunteers. One of the lead<br />
people in the project attended the evening to discuss<br />
the boxes with the Bat Expert.<br />
Bird boxes have also been installed in the woodland<br />
although a Great Tit insists on nesting in one of the<br />
water pipe containers meaning the tap cannot be used<br />
until the birds have flown The plot holders do not<br />
mind though.<br />

<strong>Norden</strong> Carnival<br />
MRCAS supports Rochdale<br />
Township in Bloom and have entered<br />
the In Your Neighborhood Category<br />
for the past 2 years obtaining a level<br />
5 Outstanding both times. They have<br />
entered again this year so fingers<br />
crossed.<br />

30 Year Lease Signed<br />
It was this year that a 30 year lease was signed by MRCAS with<br />
Rochdale Council. It had been discovered that the allotments<br />
were on a rolling 12 month lease which meant that the plot<br />
holders could be given 4 months notice to vacate the plots.<br />
Their position is much now more secure and it enables MRCAS<br />
to request funding for more expensive projects.<br />
MRCAS support the Countryside Rangers and their Green<br />
Volunteers team, working with them when needed in the Moss<br />
Row Woodland.<br />
Moss Row Community Allotments are now a hive of activity with<br />
all the plots let and a waiting list of at least 50 people. It is a<br />
haven for wildlife whereas before it was a derelict field.<br />

What a good do!<br />
The Rooley Moor Neighbourhood Forum community event took place in Catley Lane<br />
Head on Sunday 13th August <strong>2017</strong>. We started at noon and had four hours of fun<br />
with folk music, history readings & displays, clog dancing and much, much more.<br />
Many people put in loads of effort to make the day a success (I won’t go into detail because<br />
they all know who they are) and our thanks go to the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale,<br />
Mr Ian Duckworth and Mrs Christine Duckworth, our local MP, Mr Tony Lloyd, our Ward<br />
Councillors, Cecile and Surinder Biant and to Sue Devaney for their attendance and participation.<br />
Catley Lane Head is the gateway to Rooley Moor and the Cotton Famine Road, so this years<br />
event theme was the Cotton Famine, as we all have a responsibility to make sure the story is<br />
never forgotten and that the Cotton Famine Road remains for future generations to enjoy.<br />
Mayor Ian Duckworth said: “My grandmother worked in a mill and when my mother was 12 her<br />
name was put down to work there as well. I am proud to be a descendant of those mill workers<br />
and how they supported the slave workers in America, I have no doubt Rochdaledalians would<br />
do exactly the same today.”<br />
Tony Lloyd MP said:“It’s important to recognise the story of the Cotton Famine, I’m a Northerner<br />
and grew up with the Northern traditions, what really annoys me is that no one told me of these<br />
stories as a child, I had to wait until I was an adult to find out about the Cotton Famine.”<br />
Sue Devaney said: “This road [the Cotton Famine Road], this village [Catley Lane Head], this<br />
area and Rochdale has a very proud association with the abolition of slavery and this road is<br />
undoubtedly a monument to the courage and suffering of the cotton workers of Rochdale in<br />
those dark years.”<br />
Part of the event included the unveiling of a new village sign for Catley Lane Head, Rooley Moor<br />
Neighbourhood Forum is extremely grateful to Greater Manchester Police for funding the sign<br />
to promote careful driving, and to Rochdale Council for installing the sign and supporting<br />
this year’s event.<br />
At the event we also revealed the results of our community questionnaire, the results of which<br />
will be used to define a neighbourhood planning policy for our area for the next 20 years. We<br />
hope to present a draft plan for the council to consider by the end of this year.<br />

Ashworth Revisited<br />

Valley Heritage Trail<br />
Here the little stream from the hillside<br />
above Mill Croft flows into the larger<br />
Naden Brook in Ashworth Woods at<br />
a place known locally as Coal Bank,<br />
which is now a ‘landscaped’ area for<br />
walkers and picnickers alike, but which<br />
was once back in the industrial past a<br />
place of mills, chimneys, small coal pits,<br />
cotton-spinning, paperworks, dye and<br />
bleach works, all of which were reliant<br />
on the Naden Brook.<br />
The mill began life as a cotton-spinning<br />
mill (probably a fulling mill) but then in<br />
the 19th century the mill became a<br />
paper/printing works, although in a<br />
directory for 1891, Coal Bank Mill is<br />
described as a bleachers and dyers<br />
under the ownership of Richard Bell.<br />
Opposite the mill were two rows of<br />
cottages, built into the hillside, with the<br />
mill office at one end and a shop at the<br />
other. The children used to be bathed<br />
in tubs outside the cottages, one in,<br />
quick wash, out and the next one in.<br />
Water was carried from a spring in the<br />
lane up in Wolstenholme Fold.<br />
During the Great War the mill was<br />
processing gun cotton and caught fire.<br />
The motor driven Rochdale Fire<br />
Brigade arrived before the <strong>Norden</strong><br />
one, as this was horse drawn and the<br />
horses had to be caught in the field.<br />
Despite their efforts the mill was<br />
destroyed.<br />
After the fire in 1916 the mill closed<br />
down for good. Much of the mill was<br />
then pulled down and great quantities<br />
of the stonework taken away.<br />
Part of a wall still stands as do the<br />
foundations of several buildings at<br />
either side of the walkway, including<br />
what was the lodge.<br />
There is also a nicely built stone bridge.<br />
Here, old industrial ruins merge in with<br />
the flora and fauna – as if in some way<br />
time has stood still, even though the<br />

Mill have been almost obliterated<br />
from what is now a “very” tranquil and<br />
secluded place.<br />
The Coal Bank Mill chimney with its<br />
“open” square-shaped flue was<br />
demolished in 2006 and the site<br />
levelled and landscaped in order to<br />
make new pathways and modern<br />
wooden bridges.<br />
Since the initial publication in Streetwise<br />
Magazine, this wonderful walk has really<br />
taken off with glowing reviews.<br />

From The Archives<br />
THE ATHLETICS GROUNDS<br />
There had existed an ‘Old Athletics Grounds’<br />
off Milnrow Road from 1871, the earliest group<br />
occupying it being the Rochdale Rifle and<br />
Athletics Club. The Rochdale Athletics<br />
Company took over the Athletics Grounds in<br />
June of 1894, opening its use to a number of<br />
sporting bodies including Rochdale Hornets<br />
Rugby Football Club. The ground itself was<br />
situated alongside the Rochdale to Oldham<br />
railway line with access from Milnrow Road<br />
at Waithlands.<br />
Initially there were two racetracks in the stadium<br />
– one outer, banked, 502 yard cycling circuit, and<br />
an inner ¼ mile ash track. The Northern<br />
Counties Cross Country Championship was<br />
held there in 1896 beginning a 10 mile course at<br />
the ground and running 3 times around nearby<br />
countryside before finishing back in the stadium.<br />
In the same year, the Rochdale Borough Police<br />
Sports were held at the Athletics Grounds<br />
including a 2 mile track race with a 7 shilling<br />
prize for the winner!<br />
Having played some of their early matches<br />
at Oakenrod and at Dane St Cricket Ground,<br />
Rochdale Hornets rugby league team took to the<br />
Athletics Grounds in 1900/01 although the club<br />
had used it previously, for example in 1894<br />
playing their first game against Crompton when<br />
7000 turned up to watch them, some of the<br />
spectators surging onto the cycle track when a<br />
perimeter fence gave way.<br />
The original ‘ stand at the Athletics Grounds held<br />
2500 spectators but had to be replaced following<br />
the Glasgow Ibrox stadium disaster of 1902 at<br />
which 25 were killed under a stand collapse<br />
during a match between Scotland and England.<br />
Opposite the railway side stood a covered stand<br />
50 yards long seating 1,200 underneath which<br />
was a temperance bar and dressing rooms. In the<br />
1911–1912 rugby league season a new covered<br />
area on the enclosure side was built a year before<br />
the Hornets purchased the stadium as their<br />
home. Those attending games at the Athletics<br />
Grounds will well remember the un-terraced and<br />
uncovered mound of ashes at the town end on<br />
top of which the scoreboard stood which was<br />
sometimes called Hill 60 after the mound south<br />
of Ypres on the Western Front. The highest rugby<br />
league attendance at the Athletic Grounds was at<br />
the 1924 Challenge Cup Final between Oldham<br />
and Wigan, mounted policemen controlling<br />
41,831 spectators.<br />
In September 1935 fire destroyed the Athletics<br />
Ground’s main stand, dressing rooms and offices,<br />
leaving only concrete and brick foundations and<br />
the iron supports of the roof. It was re-built by<br />
Fletcher Bolton Ltd of Oldham Road at a cost<br />
of £4725 and opened in March 1936. A further<br />
tragedy occurred however in 1939 when 17<br />
spectators were hurt and 2 killed with the partial<br />
collapse of the railway stand under the weight<br />
of hundreds of people during a match between<br />
Salford and Wigan.<br />
Apart from athletics, the track around the rugby<br />
field was used for speedway with the Hornets<br />
holding races at the Athletic Grounds in August<br />
of 1928. At first it was a success with a crowd of<br />
7000 in attendance and the Rochdale Hornets<br />
team competed in the inaugural season of British<br />
Speedway in 1929. However, it was discontinued<br />
in July of 1930,”waning interest” being cited as<br />
the reason for its failure. There was a speedway<br />
revival in August of the same year under new<br />
management but this was short lived. In 1970,<br />
the team was reformed to promote the Belle Vue<br />
Aces and to give their junior riders a chance<br />
to progress, the most famous to do so from the<br />
Hornets being the 1976 World Champion<br />
Peter Collins.<br />
A greyhound racing syndicate brought dog racing<br />
to the Athletics Grounds in 1932 with the<br />
opening meeting held on the 18th of June. The<br />
track had a 450-yard circumference with racing<br />
kennels and paddock under the main<br />

grandstand with a further 120 resident kennels<br />
situated behind. Race distances at the Athletics<br />
Grounds were 319, 500 and 530 yards in<br />
addition to a 465 yard handicap. Although<br />
initially a success, it lost money for the<br />
sponsors over the years and was terminated in<br />
the 1960’s.<br />
Stock Cars racing was introduced to the<br />
Athletics Grounds in May of 1970. The circuit<br />
was a big fast shale track, 440 yards in length<br />
and although racing in Rochdale was quite<br />
popular, a persistent criticism was the height<br />
of the inner granite kerb stones which were<br />
there to protect the rugby pitch. Racing carried<br />
on until 1984 when it finally closed but not<br />
before it had produced two of the sport’s biggest<br />
stars, Stuart Smith and Doug Cronshaw.<br />
The Athletics Grounds had been the home of<br />
Rochdale Hornets Rugby League Football Club<br />
for over 90 years until 1988 and the stadium<br />
played host to many other memorable sporting<br />
moments. In the late 1980’s however, both the<br />
football and the rugby teams were experiencing<br />
financial difficulties and following a firm offer<br />
for the land, Hornets accepted Morrison’s £2.6m<br />
offer for the Athletic Grounds. With the sale,<br />
the rugby club bought a half share in Rochdale<br />
A.F.C.’s Spotland Stadium, thus saving both<br />
clubs for the town.<br />

TOMATO, ORANGE<br />
& SHERRY SOUP<br />
Ingredients<br />
600g tomatoes, chopped<br />
3 tablespoons oil<br />
2 red onions, peeled and finely chopped<br />
3 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced<br />
1 tablespoon tomato puree<br />
Zest of ½ orange and juice of 2 oranges<br />
2 teaspoons sugar<br />
1 tsp crushed coriander seeds<br />
2 tsps chopped basil<br />
1 tsp tabasco sauce<br />
2 tablespoons sherry<br />
750mls vegetable stock<br />
Salt and black pepper<br />
250mls single cream<br />
To serve - cream , fresh basil leaves and garlic croutons<br />
Method<br />
1. Heat the oil in a pan and gently fry the onions and<br />
garlic, until soft.<br />
2. Add the tomatoes, puree, orange zest and juice,<br />
sugar, coriander and basil. Add the stock and<br />
cook for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally until<br />
the tomatoes are soft.<br />
3. Add the tabasco sauce and seasoning to taste.<br />
4. Liquidise and strain through a sieve. Return to<br />
the pan and add the cream, reheat gently. Do not<br />
boil once cream has been added.<br />
5. Serve with a swirl of cream, fresh basil leaves and<br />
garlic croutons.<br />
Garlic Croutons - Cut the crusts off thickly sliced bread<br />
and cut into cubes. Crush two garlic cloves and mix<br />
with 3 tablespoons olive oil and salt and pepper. Mix<br />
in the bread cubes. Spread onto a baking tray and<br />
bake at 200°c / gas 6 for 10 minutes or until golden.<br />
This warming, tasty recipe is ideal for the autumn<br />
months when there is often a<br />
glut of tomatoes. It can be frozen<br />
before adding the cream. I usually<br />
serve it with a good crusty brown<br />
bread.<br />

in 2000. His talk attempts to put the Lancashire<br />
Witch incident into the context of a remote and<br />
politically disconnected North West as it was in early<br />
seventeenth century England. It was a very different<br />
world to the one we occupy today - divided, secretive,<br />
one in which myth and tradition were connections to<br />
a darker past.<br />

Crime Figures for the Past Month<br />
During the past month in <strong>Bamford</strong> and Oakenrod<br />
there have been seven domestic burglaries and<br />
these took place on Malvern Street, <strong>Norden</strong> Road,<br />
Bury and Rochdale Old Road, Holborn Square, Bury<br />
Road and two cases on Holborn Street.<br />
There have also been three cases of burglary other<br />
than to a dwelling on Roch Valley Way, Bury Road<br />
and Martlett Avenue.<br />
There have recently been eleven cases of vehicle<br />
crime. This also includes criminal damage to vehicles.<br />

<strong>Bamford</strong> Green Belt Action Group<br />
August saw the publication of the time frame for the development and publication of the<br />
second draft of the Greater Manchester Spatial framework. The document states that “the<br />
second draft will take into account concerns raised by some members of the public during<br />
the first consultation period, and will aim to make the most of Greater Manchester’s<br />
brownfield sites and reduce the impact on greenbelt”.<br />
This process will start in September, with the publication of the responses to the initial<br />
consultation. The second draft of the plan will be developed in the New Year, with a view to<br />
being published in June 2018. Following this publication there will be a twelve week public<br />
consultation period.<br />
Look out for the opportunity to read the document submitted by the Action Group<br />
earlier this year.<br />
In the meantime we will continue to keep the momentum going and to have fundraising<br />
activities, in case our concerns are not “taken into account” and we have to engage as<br />
barrister once again.<br />
During the summer, members of the Action Group have been busy identifying<br />
brownfield sites around the Borough, which could be used for housing development before<br />
any greenbelt sites are considered. This was in response to the “Call for Sites” by Rochdale<br />
Council, when members of the public were invited to suggest such sites. In early August,<br />
we submitted over 20 sites throughout the Borough. It was interesting to note that apart<br />
from partly disused riverside mills, only one was in <strong>Bamford</strong>, not because we were being<br />
“NIMBY” but because the area is already heavily built up and there is actually very little<br />
unused land, apart from greenbelt.<br />
So keep looking on our website, watch out for messages on the data base and in this<br />
magazine for details of events and updates on progress. The group usually meet every<br />
month or so, at <strong>Bamford</strong> Bowling Club. Thanks to them for their support in letting us use<br />
the room for our meetings, to our local councillors for their support and to Streetwise for<br />
giving us space each month to keep you informed.<br />

<strong>Norden</strong> Neighbourhood Plan<br />
Since the idea of a Neighbourhood Plan for our community<br />
was first mooted, a number of enthusiastic local residents<br />
have met regularly in an effort to move the project forward<br />
and their efforts are slowly bearing fruit. It would however be<br />
beneficial if more volunteers could join the project and it is<br />
perhaps helpful at this point to explain what a Neighbourhood<br />
Plan is and what advantages it confers on local area as well as<br />
what issues a Plan will address.<br />
A Neighbourhood Plan is a document compiled by the<br />
residents of an area which tells the local planning authority,<br />
as well as a number of statuary bodies, what the planning<br />
priorities of the residents of an area are. It is a crucial<br />
document against which planning officers can assess the<br />
appropriateness of any proposed development. It is not a<br />
“magic bullet” but is something which planning authorities<br />
have to take seriously. The Plan can address matters such as;<br />
Local Housing Need - is the mix appropriate to the needs of<br />
our community- is there sufficient affordable housing being<br />
proposed?<br />
Built Heritage Assets - are these being adequately protected?<br />
Key Infrastructure and Sustainability items - will there be<br />
enough shops,doctors and dentists for the needs of residents?<br />
Local Businesses<br />
Green Belt Policy - what level of protection should be applied<br />
to this key asset.<br />
In order to produce a meaningful Plan it is important that<br />
the whole local community is involved, and we need<br />
representatives of all age groups from young children<br />
through to senior citizens to join the process. We also need<br />
involvement from community groups, local businesses and<br />
local schools.<br />

Tudor Medical –<br />

Accessing high quality medical care when you need it is becoming more<br />
and more of a challenge, but all that might be about to change. In his first<br />
interview with Street Wise, Dr Gary Tudor explains the advantages of being<br />
able to offer greater choice to patients from his private GP clinic on Bank<br />
Street in Rawtenstall.<br />
During his 40 year career, Dr Tudor has worked as an NHS GP and has practised<br />
privately across the north west of England, offering a private service as accessible as<br />
the NHS equivalent.<br />
“I worked in the NHS and have the utmost respect for it,” he explains. “I won’t<br />
undermine the cornerstone of free medical care or the front line GPs. Tudor Medical<br />
is a complete supplementary service available to patients who want that option.<br />
“One of the things I have always enjoyed about being a GP is talking to patients.<br />
Doctors know that positive relationships and open, honest lines of communication play<br />
an important role in diagnosis and treatment. This approach underpins my philosophy.<br />
“Changes to the NHS model have made this difficult to sustain. Delivering this standard<br />
of care is probably the main reason I entered private practice. I’m not constrained by<br />
time and can offer different lengths of appointments. So much can be achieved with the<br />
luxury to explore symptoms, lifestyles and external factors.”<br />
Tudor Medical’s fast-track process for delivering test results means patients are<br />
emailed results as soon as they become available. In accordance with doctorpatient<br />
confidentiality, medical information will not be shared with patients’ regular GPs without<br />
permission. Similarly, Dr Tudor will not prescribe any medication unless clinically<br />
justifiable. He is also committed to limiting medical letters and exemptions to patients<br />
whose health problems warrant them.<br />
Aesthetic procedures can also be performed by Dr Tudor. As well as providing<br />
treatments to improve the appearance of skin, he also performs corrections for patients<br />
unhappy with the results of prior treatments. Although patients can access aesthetic<br />
treatments quickly, Dr Tudor still insists on a full consultation with a minimum ‘cooling-off’<br />
period of 24 hours.<br />
“The practice operates in accordance with all medical guidelines and to the standards<br />
required by organisations such as NICE and the CQC,” Dr Tudor explains. “I deliver<br />
quality care to patients which demands that I also deliver a service they can trust.”<br />
Patients do not require medical insurance and do not need to deregister from their<br />
regular practice.<br />
