FEATURED PLANT
Pelorus Jack
A DOLPHIN WHO REACHED OUT A FIN TO HELP HIS FELLOW MAN
Two Black Sea bottlenose dolphins
were recently the subject of
a research study that alleges that
these two companions, named by
their researchers Yasha and Yana,
were observed to hold a conversation
between themselves that
consisted of “dolphinese” sentences
up to five words in length.
The researchers were unable to
interpret the conversation, so we
don’t know if they were discussing
matters of any great import. Still,
the researchers were struck with
how the interaction appeared to
consist of the two animals taking
turns listening and responding.
Dolphins have long been recognized
as having extraordinary
intelligence and a friendly attitude
towards humans. There have been
many stories of dolphins offering
life-saving aid to victims of shipwrecks.
Elian Gonzalez, the boy at
the center of the famous custody
battle between his Cuban father
and his Miami relatives, claimed to
have been saved from drowning
by dolphins in his harrowing trip
across the Florida Straits.
In the south pacific, there is a
dolphin with a legendary reputation
known as Pelorus Jack. He
was a Risso’s dolphin, which is not
a common species to find off the
coast of New Zealand where he
made his home.
According to Wikipedia,
“Pelorus Jack was first seen
around 1888 when it appeared
in front of the schooner Brindle
when the ship approached French
Pass, a channel located between
D’Urville Island and the South
Island. When the members of the
crew saw the dolphin bobbing
up and down in front of the ship,
they wanted to kill him, but the
captain’s wife talked them out of
it. To their amazement, the dolphin
then proceeded to guide the ship
through the narrow channel. And
for years thereafter, he safely guided
almost every ship that came by.
With rocks and strong currents, the
area is dangerous to ships, but no
shipwrecks occurred when Jack
was present.”
He was last seen in 1912.
You Gotta Move...
I am writing this from my new
desk at our new nursery facility on
Bedenbaugh Rd. in Lake City. After
months of planning, we’ve finally
made the big move.
This 40+ acre facility represents a
huge step in faith for our little mom
and pop operation. It’s a fabulous
opportunity to take a blank slate
and set it up exactly the way we
want it set up, which is quite a bit
different that the space we were
occupying up until now.
Our office is a brand new facility
with enough space for our whole
team to be productive, unlike the
compressed space we were struggling
with in the old location.
Along with the move comes an
unavoidable change in the way we
see our company as well as the
way our customers and vendors
see us. Growth is good, but it is
also a little scary.
I want you to know that as we expand
and upgrade, we are still the
same company at our core that we
always were. We still exist to help
our customers do their jobs better.
You can still count on us to be
attuned to
your needs.
Please tell your
friends and colleagues about us,
because we are just as dependent
on your good will and support as
we have ever been.
Speaking of friends and colleagues,
it was so fun to get
together with so many of you in
Orlando at the Landscape Show
again this year.
We had a great time and we really
treasure the chance to meet
friends old and new in a relaxed
setting.
Until next time,
GREY OWL JUNIPER
Juniperus Virginiana ‘Grey Owl’
Neither grey nor owlish, it’s not
at all clear how this wonderful
shrub got its name. The plant
has feathery foliage and
blue-green color that might
be said to lean a little to the
grey when viewed from the right
angle, so we have a rather flimsy
justification for the imaginative
name.
The distinctive color is one
of the plant’s greatest assets,
enhancing the brighter colors of
neighboring plants in contrast.
Each shrub sprawls to a mature
spread of 5-6 feet and stands
2-3 feet tall. It may be planted
in a mass or individually. It likes
full sun but will tolerate a variety
of soils and temperatures. Some
people like to keep them well
trimmed, but pruning is a matter of
personal preference. They bear dark
blue berries annually. Take advantage
of these prices while they last!
3 gal: $6.95 $5.00
Prices good through the end of December
JUDGE TO MONKEY:
‘YOU HAVE NO COPYRIGHT CLAIM’
U.S District Judge William Orrick
has denied the copyright claims
of Naruto, a 6-year-old macaque
monkey whose self portrait photo,
taken while the young primate
stumbled upon a camera in the
wilds of an Indonesian island, had
become widely publicised.
“While Congress and the president
can extend the protection of law to
animals as well as humans,” Orrick
wrote, “there is no indication that
they did so in the Copyright Act.”
Arguing the case on behalf of
Naruto was a People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals (PETA) legal
team, who had contended that
the animal, not the owner of the
camera, should
have the rights
to the photo,
and that any
income derived
from the
photo should
be devoted to
the benefit of
Mr. Naruto
Naruto and his
kin. The ruling
in the suit was perhaps impacted by
the inability of the plaintiff to be present
to testify on his own behalf.
