BOTTLEBRUSH

It’s LANDSCAPE SHOW Time Again!
Make your reservations for the 2015
Landscape Show scheduled to take
place September 24-26 in Orlando.
G&S never misses the opportunity
to exhibit at
this show. We
consider it an
essential opportunity
to rub elbows
with others in the
industry and get a
feel for trends and
developments in
the industtry. We also love seeing
old friends and making new ones in
a relaxed setting.
This year’s show has a new feature
called the Fresh From Florida Yardto-Table
Chefs!
Each day of the show,
a chef will
There are also many other features as there
always are at the show
including classes on
business and horticultural
practices. So be sure and
stop by our booth when
you are there. Maybe we’ll
get a chance to share
some “yard-to-table”
goodies together!
SUMMER HEAT
Greetings friends!
Is it just me or does it seem like we’ve had more hot weather this
month than usual? We’ve been stuck in this pattern of intense tropical
heat followed by almost daily thunderstorms. I feel sympathy for all you
folks that have to work outside all day long. Let’s hope it moderates
very soon!
We have a lot going on
here in Lake City. My
5-year-old daughter
Sarah has enrolled in
gymnastics class this
summer. She’ll be starting
kindergarten in a few
weeks. I’m hoping the
gymnastics will channel
her boundless energy so she can sit quietly in
class!
Swingin’ Sarah
You may remember
last summer Charlie got married.
Now he and his bride are expecting a
baby in August. They know the baby is
going to be a boy and his name will be
Santiago. It brings back a lot of memories
watching him go through the stages
of expectant fatherhood. It’s a special
time of life that deserves to be savored.
Last but not least, I am fulfilling my
dream of building a house. Construction
is underway for future Kirsch Manor.
I don’t mean to say that I am building
it myself, but I will be helping out on a few things to provide a little
“sweat equity.” I can hardly wait to move in!
Once upon a time a little boy was buying
peppermints at the local candy store.
He turned to the store owner and asked
“Mr. Matthews, may I please use your
phone?” Mr. Matthews smiled at the
little boy, who was one of his regulars
and handed him his phone. The little
boy quickly punched in the phone
number and had the following conversation:
“Mrs. Donavan, you don’t know me,
but I pass your house each day on
my way to school. I mow many of the
lawns in the neighborhood and was
wondering if I could mow yours as
well?” Mrs. Donavan politely replied,
“Oh, thank you anyway,
but we are quite happy with the
service we are getting now.”
Somewhat disappointed, Johnny
than when you first made the call.
Keep up that attitude and you will be
a great success someday.” The little
simply calling to see how I
Featured Plant
Bottle Brush
Callistemon spp.
When Joseph
Banks, the royal
botanist, accompanied
Captain
Cook on one of his
voyages to explore
worlds unknown
across the Pacific
Ocean, one of the
plants he saw amongst all the
other strange flora and fauna
when they reached Australia was
the bottle brush. It wasn’t long
before cuttings of this plant was
brought back to England and
became a highly prized exotic
shrub in fashionable hothouses
in the kingdom.
This distinctive shrub has leaves
somewhat reminiscent of the
wax myrtle, but the real beauty in
this plant is the bushy red flower
that gives the plant its name. A
magnet for hummingbirds, the
distinctive inflorescence can add
a punch of color to brighten any
sunny garden in the region.
Bottle brush will occasionally
suffer cold damage in this zone if
temperatures drop too low and if
planted in a spot unprotected from arctic
of up to 15 feet. Even when grown as a
shrub, the growth habit is mostly columnar.
Tales from the Road
Battery Recharge
By Billy Clements
The gentle breezes of
spring have once again
blown away, leaving
the warm sunshine
of summertime. For
my wife and I, this
means only one
thing... it is time to
shed the shackles
of work and head
for the coastline!
This family ritual has been a part
of our marital routine for the last
twenty-one years and this year was
to prove no different. We begin to
notice the gleam in each other’s
eyes months before we leave and
count the days one by one until the
time finally rolls around. Then, we
focus all of our procedures leading
up to the big day.
Of course, first on the list is... the
packing. We are looking forward to
seven whole days so the packing
must be enough to last but not too
much to transport. For this tactical
challenge, my wife possesses skills
that very few could equal. She packs
a various supply of shirts, pants, sun
dresses, undergarments, shoes, hats,
sunglasses, swimsuits, toiletries, and
any other staples needed to sustain our
vital signs while we attempt to survive
in paradise. As for me, I pack whatever
T-shirt is already on my back, whatever
shorts that are already on my “bum”
and, whatever shoes are already on my
feet. Done and done.
Naturally, no trip to the “fun in the sun”
is complete without sunscreen protection...
GALLONS OF IT!!! Every day we
apply the skin grease from head to toe in
preparation for the rays we plan to soak
up. Covering me from top to bottom
is quite a process; almost like painting
a house! Still, we push on to the end
whereupon victory can be achieved. The
moment we enter the clear waters of the
Gulf of Mexico and float away to complete
nirvana. Aaahhh, this is livin’.
The rolling waves have a way of
un-rolling all the miles I drive to
get here...
