this project was a group work and was completed in cooperation
with my colleagues georgianna katopodi and paola ontario
In this project, we were faced with
the task of creating an urban
cell-structure, that is flexible
enough to keep up with the changes
in demand for space and function of
the city. The plot was situated at
Vienna’s Westbahnhof train station,
where a reduction of the active
train tracks from 8 to 1 was planned.
The new urban structure was therefore
supposed to integrate the space
of the old tracks, as well as use the
space above the remaining train
tracks.
Vertical Flow is a 12-story cell
structure with a steel framework,
that is “levitating” over the train
station. It’s a structure, based on
the addition of cells into modules,
which are then interconnected
through wide paths, serving as open
public spaces. The development of
these paths from street level all
the way to the roofs of the different
modules creates what we
called a “vertical flow” and
invites urban space into the heart
of our structure.

This experimental project deals with the issue of public involvement
in urban development. The subject of my work revolved around communication
in the digital age as tool for spreading ideas and motivating
others to participate in the shaping of their environment.
The work itself was a form of social experiment and consisted of 3
parts:
1. The theoretical base, discussing the importance of communication
and the merkmale of communication in the digital age, in the form of
a manifest.
2. A performance piece, which took place in the area of Karlsplatz,
Vienna: The goal, was to use communication to engage the people of
Karlsplatz in helping to spread of the following message: Wir sind die
Menschen am Karlsplatz, die User am Platz. Das ist Unserplatz Dieser
Platz verbindet uns. Du gehörst zu uns. Du bist ein User vom Unserplatz.
Entscheide mit, was passiert. Melde dich zu Wort.” Which summed
up, is an appeal to people, to acknowledge the bond that public space
creates between them and the importance of the publics involvement
in city development decisions.
3. A platform on a popular social media outlet, where the theory
behind the experiment and the results of the performance piece were
published. The platform was also meant to serve as a public discussion
forum, regarding topics around Vienna city development.
