Design 809, is a new 50m concept that has been created to re-define
what it means to be a high performance superyacht.
Farr Yacht Design and Design Unlimited have partnered together to
create this high performance racer cruiser that will establish a new
class in competitive sailing superyachts.
Breaking records, dominating the Superyacht Racing Circuit, and
comfortable Mediterranean and Caribbean cruising round out the
uncompromising design brief. Cutting days from trans-ocean records
and finishing hours ahead of the closet competition in superyacht day
races are all easily within the capabilities of this incredible yacht.
This 50m concept is pure power with a long, light hull of only 155 tons
displacement, and a rig that stands 68m above the waterline. 2500
square meters of sail, twin daggerboards and rudders and a telescoping/
canting keel allow this yacht to easily achieve speeds into the mid-20’s
in moderate winds and well above 30 knots in strong winds. Advanced
and proven sail handling systems provide the necessary flexibility and
safety needed to confidently achieve those high speeds.
Naval Architecture
Naval Architecture notes
Power and light weight come from full carbon construction including super
lightweight interiors.
The precise control of that awesome power is provided by a telescopic/canting keel,
twin daggerboards and twin rudders. This combination of design components, on a
vessel totaling a mere 155 tons, results in the world’s fastest superyacht.
The sleek hull owes its lineage to record breaking round-the-world racers. A reverse
stem and full-length chine enhance performance and complement the aggressive
style.
A yacht of this size requires unique appendage systems to reach the performance
goals and to function near shore and in fantastic cruising zones. A telescopic/canting
keel with a draft of 7 meters is one of the key design elements. This configuration was
chosen because it achieves a draft range (7 to 4.5m) with the best performance and
minimal intrusion into the interior spaces. The telescopic/canting keel is a marvel
of modern technology and hydraulic systems. Married with twin daggerboards and
twin rudders it is the optimum solution for achieving and maintaining amazing
speeds under absolute control.
Exterior Styling
Exterior Styling notes
The exterior styling of the concept work has targeted a distinctive look to match the performance of the world’s fastest superyacht.
Plain, simple surfaces let key features stand out, and are part of a styling solution that will stand the test of time. The primary
elements have been formed by lifting the very fabric of the hull and deck to reveal secondary elements that are purposeful, and
with a strong directional language. The hull itself rolls inboard to form wide bulwark features that accentuate the length of the
boat. The bulwark width has been chosen to envelop the daggerboard/deck penetrations, and to provide comfortable hiking
space for crew. The expansive teak decks have been locally lifted to reveal a cabin and window feature that gives the boat a soul.
The cabin sizing has been chosen as a fairly minimal one that is still complementary of the hull’s freeboard, and with enough
window to portray some aggression.
A central safe guest zone is immediately positioned behind the main companionway. This area has expansive space for lounging
and dining. The 3 winches, traveller/aft companionway, and helm station define a crew working zone. By extending this zone all
the way outboard to the bulwark feature we create a strong link to the full cockpit race boats that are defining ‘state of the art’.
Central zones are highlighted in a darker glass and wood colors that link use areas. The aft cockpit teak and dark central zone
continue between sunbathing areas and over the transom to create a strong link to the sea.
Interior Styling
Interior Styling notes
The interior arrangement and styling pairs superyacht luxury with lightweight materials, engineered to limit any noise and vibration. The result is an open and spacious interior with a
particularly ergonomic design. Dark, American Walnut adds a polished finished to a softer and more casual general décor and subtly integrated LED lighting is a practical yet aesthetic
addition.
The main saloon, with access direct from the cockpit, features a bar, lounge space and dining area all on one level. Moving below, there’s accommodation for six within comprising a
master stateroom and two guest cabins, all with en-suite facilities. The full-beam master stateroom also features a private lounge area, expansive dressing space and additional direct
access to the aft deck.
Forward, there’s crew accommodation for eight with a large galley opposite the cress mess, a walk-in fridge freezer and separate laundry room. The Captain and First Mate’s quarters
are positioned aft, along with a navigation station, and allow for quick access direct to the deck and dual helm positions.
