I chikawa hooks from Japan are lovely hooks. They 

are lightweight and sharp. The Ichikawa K.O.S.H 

are hooks made for lures and being lighweight is a 

great attribute and does not disrupt the balance of 

the lure too much.

Sharp Hooks 

Yes, hooks are sharp but to test how sharp we ran 

them on the surface of a plastic spoon. If they are 

really sharp they will grip onto the spoon’s surface. 

The K.O.S.H easily caught onto the surface of the 

spoon; testament to them being sharp.

Field Testing 

Next is to test the penetration capability and 

toughness of the hook. We went to the Natural 

Exotic Pond in Behrang with a few K.O.S.H size 

1/0 hooks to test them against the hard fighting 

fishes there. We cast out fish meat baits and waited 

for the fish to take the bait.

It did not take long before we were fighting fish 

after fish. We did not lose fish as the hook easily 

penetrated the fish’s lips easily. The Ichikawa 

K.O.S.H also held on to the fish well.

The Ichikawa K.O.S.H is certainly one tough hook 

and it did not open up and held on well even on 

high pressure. We fought many hard fighting fishes 

and we did not lose any. It did really well.

Summary

The Ichikawa K.O.S.H hooks are superb lure 

hooks. They are loght weight and they performed 

really well. They are sharp; easily penetrating the 

lips of fishes and they held on well without opening 

or bending.

Test Drives The Asian Angler

F or the brand conscious angler shopping at a budget, 

big brands the likes of Shimano does have a 

segment of rods placed in this category. The Shimano 

Cruzar falls into this category at a price that 

is hard for those at a budget to turn down. So how 

would such a rod fair when it comes to fishing?

Cosmetics 

The Cruzar looks decent coming in black and 

white with about two rounds of silver coloured 

thread on black at the thread windings. It comes 

with black EVA grip and a rubber end cap of 

which is great as they are easy to clean and 

helps the rod stand without slipping as easily as 

metal caps do.

No Frills 

When it comes to the components the Cruzar 

comes with zero frills. Normal China guides and 

reel seat, mid quality EVA handles. For a Shimano 

rod at this price range nothing more should be 

expected.

Blank 

The Cruzar come with a fibre glass blank of 

which helps make the price possible. Using such 

blanks however gives the rod a wobbly feel and 

usually brings the weight up but Shimano has 

done a good job in keeping the weight low with 

good balance.

Field Test 

Using relatively light soft baits that had to be cast 

a reasonable distance, we cast our baits out with 

relative ease but accuracy was an issue most 

likely due to the wobbly tip of the rod. However, 

we were still getting hits.

Playing To A “C“ 

The Cruzar comes with minimal backbone despite 

being rated 8-16lb of which lands it within 

medium action territory, but it suited the fishing 

here. The barramundis here bent the Cruzar 

into a “C” allowing for more fun sort of fishing. 

Needless to say we caught lots of fish with it 

and had fun.

Landed lots of fish and had lots of fun with the 

Cruzar.

Verdict 

^ A rubber end cap allows the rod to stand with less 

slipping and rubber does not soak up liquids and dirt. 

The Shimano Cruzar is budget no frills rod for 

anglers that want a branded rod but at a low 

price. Despite being a no frills rod and a rod 

with minimal backbone we still had lots of fun 

and landed a good amount of barramundis.

quite some time, circa 2008 if memory serves me 

well. It was first used on low profile reels and years 

later on spinning reels designed by the Japanese 

team.

The Tough... Revo X

Revo X Spinning reel, a dark reel 

in black. The Revo X is a tough 

looking and solid feeling reel that 

operates smoothly. It is well built 

with a rigid C6 (IM-C6) carbon 

body design that gives the angler 

a confident solid feel.

The Revo X comes with 6 HPCR stainless steel bearings 

+ 1 roller bearing giving it a smooth feeling when 

the handle is turned. HPCR stainless steel bearings also

is my reel.” I like all thing black but black alone 

is boring. I like mine sporty too and the invention 

of carbon fibre has been a blessing. Not 

only does carbon fibre look sporty and cool; it 

also is light weight. That is why I chose this reel, 

the Penn Conflict II.

Sporty In Black 

Just like all of Batman’s toys, the Penn Conflict II 

comes in black, with black carbon fibre strips on 

the rotor and the handle. It comes with a black EVA 

know that is contoured for a comfortable hold. The 

bail arm and wire is black and built thick.

Lightweight 

Since I carry lots of equipment with me whether 

fighting crime or fishing; my tools need to be light. 

The Penn Conflict II is pretty light comparing to 

other reels within the same range. I believe most 

of you will like it light too.

Tough And Strong 

Looks and being lightweight alone will not be good 

enough for the fishing I do. I want a reel that is 

tough and strong. If you’ve battled villains the like 

of the Joker and Penguin you’ll see that weak tools 

will not be of help. I do not underestimate the power 

and strength of the fishes I am targeting too. Amazon 

redtail cafishes are no softies and so are groupers; 

let’s not forget the mighty giant snakeheads.

Braid Ready 

My friend, Spidey or Spiderman uses webs to 

help get from one place to another fast. Strand for 

strand his web is said to be 10 times the strength 

of steel. Thus why I prefer braided lines and use 

them all the time. Diameter to diameter, they are 

about twice the strength of mono. Maybe more. 

Hence why I prefer to use braid ready spools and 

this reel has it.

Take It From Batman 

Well, if it’s good enough for me, it should be good 

enough for you too. Oh, there is one problem. The 

new Penn Conflict II is not in the market yet. It 

is targeted to be launch mid 2017. Guess you will 

have to be patient and wait for its launching. Meanwhile, 

happy fishing.

I f you’re planning a trip to New Zealand to fish 

for those elusive brown and rainbow trout, you’ll 

want to know a little about where you’re heading. 

Remember that the Down Under summer 

is the reverse of the northern hemisphere, with 

warm balmy days from October to April in the 

north of the country and November to March in 

the south. It’s also the main fly fishing season.

^ Fishing from Poronui. 

New Zealand is a beautiful country. Tucked 

away in the bottom left corner of the South Pacific, 

it’s a long way from anywhere except Australia. 

And even then, it’s a three hour plane ride 

across the Tasman Sea from Sydney to Auckland. 

With two main islands, imaginatively called 

the North and South Islands, the country spans 

1000 kilometres of latitude, with the resulting 

differences of climate and topography that arise 

from that.

The North Island is essentially volcanic, and the 

trout-bearing rivers and lakes generally run from 

the higher altitudes of the Central Plateau out towards 

the coast, or into one of the central lakes. 

Studded with three beautiful high mountains, Ruapehu, 

Ngaruahoe and Tongariro, and many deep 

lakes including Rotorua and Taupo, the Central 

North Island is steeped in Maori history and broken 

by fast-moving rivers. The Tongariro River is 

one of these, a rather challenging river that has 

drawn fly-fishermen since the introduction of trout 

over 120 years ago.

The South Island, on the other hand, has been 

wrenched from the earth by huge seismic upthrusts 

and earthquakes. Its landscape is spectacular, 

dropping from the high peaks of the Southern Alps 

to the wide coastal plains of the east coast and 

the wild ocean beaches of the west coast. You can 

stand on a wave-torn, rocky west coast beach and 

look inland to high snow-capped mountains, with 

several glaciers in between. Once again, clear 

rocky rivers tumble down through deep gorges 

and across stony valleys, providing countless opportunities 

for excellent wild trout fishing. 

Main international gateway cities from Asia are 

Auckland, in the North Island, and Christchurch in 

the South Island. International flights also arrive 

into Wellington from Australia, and Queenstown 

in the south, giving access to the fabulous fishing 

around Southland and inland Otago. This is also 

very handy in ski season. Major roads are good 

to drive, although drive times can be deceptively 

slow because of the rugged terrain, particularly 

in parts of the South Island. Driving is on the left 

side of the road.

^ Lake Taupo Lodge. 

The main trout fishing areas in the North Island 

are around Taupo and Rotorua, and further out 

towards the East Coast and Hawkes Bay. The 

greater Nelson region at the top of the South Island 

is a key brown trout fishing area, and there 

is also excellent fishing further south through 

Canterbury, the West Coast, Otago and Southland. 

All these places are well-served with top 

local fishing guides, and there are beautiful 

luxury lodges hidden in remote locations so you 

can stay and fish in quiet splendour. Three, four 

and five star options provide something for every 

budget.

The trout fishing season runs from October to 

April throughout most of New Zealand, but there 

are many areas in the North Island where an 

open season runs all year in the lower reaches 

of the rivers. This makes places like Taupo and 

Rotorua, in the central North Island, particularly 

good places to fish in winter.

Trout fishing is generally catch and release, and 

the clear waters of most New Zealand rivers 

make for some of the best sighted river fishing 

for brown and rainbow trout in the world. Other 

options include lake and spin fishing, raft fishing 

on the white water rivers, and heli-fishing in the 

remote back country and mountain areas.

When one mentions Kuala Selangor, the first 

thing that comes to most angler’s minds is sea fishing. 

Fishing have overshadowed the history of Melawati 

Hill, its monkeys, the fort, fireflies, etc. Probably 

because we always have fishing on our minds. 

There are a good number of hotels there to choose 

from and here is one of we recommend.

Firefly Themed Rooms 

One hotel that certainly stands out from the crowd of hotels 

there is the Sea Lion Hotel. The Sea Lion Hotel is a 

firefly themed boutique hotel that is tastefully decorated 

with art pieces, nice furnishing, and little lights on the 

ceiling of their rooms that mimic fireflies. 

>The ceiling of the rooms look like fireflies. The colours of the 

lights changes every few seconds.

The Sea Lion Hotel has 45 rooms of various configuration 

from the single rooms to family rooms. 

The rooms are tastefully furnished with a mixture of 

modern and artistically classic furniture. More important 

are the beds that they come with. These 

beds are comfortable offering a good night’s rest.

Unique Pool 

Yes, they have a pool that one can play in. Unlike the 

usual dugout swimming pools, this pool is built on the 

ground and doubles as a water feature. It has a tiled 

seats for one to sit on and just hangout. Children will 

certainly enjoy playing in the pool.

Facilities 

When it comes to facilities and amenities the Sea 

Lion Hotel comes with the general facilities offered 

by most hotels such as hot water shower, hair dryer, 

hot water dispenser (public), free wi-fi, etc. One 

thing that helps them standout is that they cater to 

the less-abled (wheelchair), something more hotels 

should have. 

>I love this chair. It is comfortable and it looks good.

Strategic Location 

There are a few must visit spots in Kuala Selangor such 

as the Melawati Hill where the Melawati fort, Altingsburg 

Lighthouse, silver leafed monkeys, museum, etc. 

are. About 5 minutes drive away from this area is one 

the jetties that takes visitors on eagle feeding trips during 

the day and firefly trips at night. All these areas are 

a mere five to ten minutes drive away from the Sea Lion 

Hotel.

The area around the hotel has food outlets and 

other shops. The famous seafood restaurants are 

about 10 minutes drive away. If you decide not to 

drive and do not want to walk much, just beside the 

hotel is a restaurant.

Personal Experience 

I recently visited Kuala Selangor with my family and our 

friends. We checked into the Sea Lion Hotel which was 

highly recommended by a friend, and the price suited 

our budget. Checking in was a breeze and they have 

lifts that took us to our floor.

My mistake was lying on the bed (was supposed to 

be for only 5 minutes) and ended up snoozing for 

an hour. The bed was really comfortable and the 

dim firefly effect helped with the shut eye.

While I didn’t go into the pool I saw kids enjoying themselves 

in it with one parent on the deckchair asleep. 

With the sound of waterfalls from water flowing off the 

sides into a catchment of which I believe sends it to a filtration 

system and back into the pool; resting there must 

be therapeutic.

All in all we certainly enjoyed ourselves and had 

a good rest. We didn’t have to rush to the sites as 

they were nearby. We had easy access to food and 

we love eating. Because of its location and facilities 

we had a really relaxing trip. We only wished that 

we had booked for a night or two longer.
