Maria is currently a cat 2 w/ winds of 110mph. Maria is 

expected to turn to the NNW Friday, w/ no impacts to 

west central and southwest FL. 

Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico early 

Wednesday as a powerful Category 4 storm with winds of 

155 mph, and it was expected to punish the island with 

life-threatening winds for 12 to 24 hours, forecasters 

said. 100% of the island is without power. The Category 

5 storm has obliterated parts of Dominica and battered 

Guadaloupe, and is hammering Puerto Rico. Families 

throughout the Caribbean are facing ferocious winds 

and widespread flooding. keep in mind thousands of 

children under the age of five die every day because they 

lack proper nutrition, safe drinking water, affordable vaccines 

and other basic necessities that most people in the 

U.S. take for granted. UNICEF’s lifesaving interventions 

and programs around the world have helped reduce the 

number of child deaths by more than 50% since 1990

KINETIC ART AND THE KINESTHESIA SHOW AT THE PALM 

SPRINGS ART MUSEUM 

“Kinetic” refers to movement. Pairing 

movement with art first came about in the 

late 1800’s when artists such as Monet, Degas, 

and Manet experimented with showing 

movement in figures or animals in their 

impressionist art. The concept of creating 

works of art that actually included movement 

in the work came about in the early 

1900’s. Nuam Gabo was one of the first artists 

to include motion in a work of art. His 

“Standing Wave”, A photo of this appears in 

this article. You may have had the opportunity 

to see the actual work or copy-cats and 

replicas of it. 

same time as the movement in Kinetic art 

began in France. It worked in conjunction 

with that movement but was also unique to 

these artists and their environment. Without 

giving a lengthy description of the art 

and the artists represented it would be an 

enjoyable and fulfilling experience to view 

these works personally. 

The show, KINESTHESIA: LATIN AMERI- 

CAN KINETIC ART, 1954-1969, is a visual 

treat. It will be available at the Palm Springs 

museum from now until January 15, 1918. 

It is worth seeing and appreciating.

As the last century progressed artists such 

as Auguste Rodin created sculptures of the 

human body that gave the illusion of movement 

almost as if the figures could come 

to life and complete the pose they were in. 

Albert Gleizes the French philosopher of 

this period indicated that rhythm was what 

created movement in art. Rodin’s figures 

contained this esthetic movement. 

The actual physical movement in art following 

Gabo’s “Standing Wave”, evolved 

with artists such as Tatlin, Rodchenko, and 

Calder. Calder is known for his “mobiles” 

The idea of mobiles has been copied and 

used in numerous commercial art applications 

including decorative accessories for 

homes and advertising schemes. 

A new show at the Palm Springs Art Museum 

examines the contribution of South 

American artists from the 1950’s and 60”s. 

The artists displayed at the Museum show 

include Jesus Rafael, Carlos Cuz-Diez, 

Gyula Kosice, and Julio Le Parc, along with 

several others which will be new to art

Let’s get one thing straight. I never heard

Shoes. 

There was this girl in my hometown Luella 

Hyner, she had actually gotten out. She was 

a Rockette. Well, the big day finally came 

and I get off the bus and my little white 

shoes, my little white dress, my little white 

tights, and my long blonde hair. I looked 

like a fucking nurse. 

Well, I got to Radio City and I would dance 

rings around the other girls and find myself 

in the alley with the other Rejects. This 

man asked if I could do fan kicks. I could 

do terrific fan kicks. The problem wasn’t 

the fan kicks, it was my looks. So I said 

fuck you Radio City and The Rockettes, 

I’m going to dance on Broadway. Broadway 

same story. 

I also stole my dance card one afternoon 

audition, and on a scale of 10, they gave me 

a 10 for Dance and 3 for looks. Well!

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis 

Made it back from Florida -just in time. 

Thoughts are with those who were not able to 

get out. More hurricanes on the way. Since 

there is no climate change I wish someone 

would tell us why these things are happening. 

The Prez keeps tweeting and calling names. 

Can’t seem to get over the fact that he won the 

election and beat HRC. What would he be 

like if he had lost the election!?!? 

All the media is hyping his deal with the 

Dem leadership over DACA and seems to be 

missing his Administration changed position 

on more LGBT issues that are going to the 

Supremes. In 9 months, he is unraveling so 

many protections that Obama gave us. I do 

hope those who just couldn’t vote for Hillary 

are happy. 

Next up is tax reform. We shall see how many 

of his corporate friends and golf buddies get a 

tax cut. Sure, won’t be me! The budget still 

must be approved this month, debt ceiling and 

national flood insurance. Hmmmm, let’s see 

how functional DC really is! What a joke! 

The League of California Cities just held their 

annual convention in Sacramento. Lots of 

valley cities represented including Cathedral 

City, Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Palm 

Desert, La Quinta, Indian Wells, Desert Hot 

Springs and Indio. Some excellent workshops 

and speakers and of course lots of networking. 

In a couple weeks, I will be headed 

to Charlotte, North Carolina for the annual 

conference for the National League of Cities. 

Also coming up is the fall meeting of the 

Democratic National Committee. Las Vegas 

for this trip! 

Cathedral City just celebrated their first Tejano 

festival with about 1000 people enjoying an 

evening of food, fun and music. It was great 

to see candidate for the State Senate, Joy Silver, 

out on the dance floor showing us how to do 

it! On the 29th is the 4th annual Glo-Run to 

benefit the PSUSD Foundation. It is an amazingly 

fun time. I have an idea for an event that 

will get everyone excited – but I need contact 

info for Greg Klein. Does anyone have it? 

If you haven’t seen it yet, the Cathedral City 

Museum and Art Gallery is showing several 

local Latino artists, professionals and some 

students. Stop on by. Some beautiful work.
