Message from
THE OFFICE
“If we had no winter, the
spring would not be so
pleasant.”

As suddenly as summer
arrived this year, so quickly
have we reached the end
of term three. I would like
to thank all our parents,
learners and teachers for
your commitment and hard
work over the past term.
We were truly blessed
with exceptional results
and achievements in all
areas of school life. I would
especially like to commend
the hours and hours of hard
work put in by our learners
on academics – I would
therefore like to congratulate
Chantal van Rooyen (grade
11) and Kiana Venter (grade
12) on their exceptional
academic results. Both of
them are amongst the Top
20 learners within the Curro
group. Well done! I would
also like to congratulate
Mr Dirk Steenkamp from
our high school, who was
recently appointed as the
Curro Subject specialist for
Tourism within the group. This
appointment pays testimony
to the caliber of teacher
we have at Roodeplaat.

Congratulations to Derik Heyl
and Chantal van Rooyen on
their election as new Head
boy and Head girl of the high
school respectively. We look
forward to your leadership in
the coming months.
The building of the new high
school is now in its final
stages. With the moving of
the front fence the sports
field and athletics track will
be completed. We are also
in negotiations regarding
our primary school’s sport
facilities. As a pilot school,
our rugby/soccer field will be
part of an experiment of a new
fertilizer project to activate
more growth. Our hockey
field is a great concern
and I am trying everything
in my power to have the
surface redone as soon
as possible. The feedback
from our parents regarding
fundraising and the spending
of funds indicated that the
cover for our pavilion should
be a priority. I am grateful to
each parent and learner that
participated in raising funds
through our soap box day.
I would also like to remind
all our parents about the
re-registration process
and contracts that need to
be handed in at school on
or before 20 September.
Thank you to everyone that
has already responded.
Management recently had a
very productive and fruitful
planning weekend a couple
of weeks ago. Exciting plans
were tabled and in months
to come I will give you a
glimpse of what to expect in
2018!
I wish all our families and
teachers well during the
coming holiday. May God
bless you and your loved
ones! Our grade 12 staff
and learners will do final
preparations during the
spring school in the holiday
– good luck, you will reap the
benefits in the final exams.

HAPPENINGS
Dear Parent,
It is the end of yet another
term. A sigh of relief, missed
opportunities or a pat on
the back... The category
you fall into will determine
the way forward for you.
The common denominator
in all these categories,
to quote Mr Niemand, is
‘#onwardsandupwards”.
We as Curro
Roodeplaat
have had great
successes in
a variety of
activities. We
were blessed with
performances at
the Curro Cuesta
showcase where
Joanice Stander won
numerous accolades
and Blessing Madhandara
received the prize for
the top art student. In a
few days’ time we will be
celebrating all the different
cultures at our school by
having our annual Culture
Gala evening. Most of our
learners that took part
in the Curro Cuesta will
be given an opportunity
to share in the spotlight
during this evening. As
part of the golden thread
interwoven throughout
the different phases we
have a guest appearance
from a grade one learner
that we are really excited
about. Come and share
this unforgettable evening
with us.
Cop, our outreach
programme, had a very
fruitful and life changing
weekend when they
had a chance to make a
difference at Makhulong
youth and child care
centre. Forty of our
students participated in this
initiative, and taking into
account all the students
that were involved in their
own outreach projects
for Life Orientation, this
clearly shows that we truly
care. We thank them all
in making a difference
in our community.
We are after all
a community
school.
Our cricket and
soccer boys are
still flying the
Roodies flag high.
Our first cricket
team recently beat
Akasia High School by
22 runs. During the Junior
City Counsel soccer
tournament our soccer
team lost in the final. A
number of our u/15 rugby
boys have been selected
after a rigorous set of trials
to participate in the Iqhawe
national tournament. We
will release the names of

the boys as soon as we
get confirmation.
Our grade 10 group has
just returned from a very
organised and successful
camp at Dullstroom. With
bumps and bruises, but
very much the wiser, the
grade 10 boys and girls
can now enter the rest of
their lives. Thank you very
much for the numerous
mails regarding the camp.
We love to hear when we
are successful as well.
The prelim exams ran
without a glitch. Due to
proper planning we are
nearing the end of the
exams and I would like to
thank every staff member
who invigilated during
this time, as well as still
performing their usual
tasks of teaching, marking
and coaching. I have set
up a meeting with the
Matric Parents regarding
the academic way forward
and how we as alliance
can assist one another
in the final stretch. The
Matric farewell is around
the corner and everybody
is looking forward to this
prestigious occasion, but
none like the Class of
2017. It is a very expensive
and special evening and I
would like you as a matric
parent to encourage your
child to enjoy the evening
until the end of the event.
I want to extend my
gratitude to all the role
players that contributed
to a very successful term.
Rest well and come back
safely and rejuvenated to
conclude the fruits of your
labour for 2017.
Lastly we also have to
say goodbye to one of
our own. Sadly Ms May
will be leaving us at the
end of this term. She has
played a crucial role at
Curro Roodeplaat
and it is safe to
say that she will be
sorely missed by
both the teachers
and students. We
wish her all the
best in her future
endeavours.

Both our u.15 and u.19 teams ended 3rd in our league. We are very proud of every
soccer player!
On 5 September Curro Roodeplaat also enrolled a team in the JCC sokkertoernooi
that was held by Menlyn. We can proudly say that our team ended 2nd after they lost
against an u.20 team in the final.
Rugby
Curro Roodeplaat participates yearly in the
Vuka tournament. During this tournament our
learners get the chance to be chosen for the
u.15 Iqhawe team and the Tshwane regional
team. Curro Roodeplaat can say with pride
that Sino Mabuza and Liam Whitehead were
chosen for the Iqhawe team which means that
they both receive Blue Bull provincial colours.
Jonty Liebenberg, Wessels Fourie and Leon
Greyling were chosen for the Tshwane regional
team that will participate in the OR Thambo
week where they stand a chance to be chosen
for the Gauteng team.

After much enthusiasm,
campaigning and another
successful online election,
the new Prefect Committee
for 2018 was elected.
Shortly thereafter they
embarked on a weekend
adventure during which
strength and character
(both physically and
mentally) were tested and
their unity was forged.

on 13 September 2017.

It is with gratefulness
that we stand at the end
of another successful
term. As a school we
have experienced and
accomplished so much in
this short, yet busy third
term.
I thank all the participants,
coaches and organisers
of the eisteddfods, Curro
Cuesta, culture week,
cross country, cricket,
hockey, tennis and
equestrian. You have
made this term a super
term! Without the support
of you, our parents, these
activities would have been
impossible. I am grateful
towards you all!
Our annual fundraising
project- the soapbox daywas
once again a highlight
on our calendar. Thank
you to every learner,
parent and educator who
also pulled their weight to
ensure the success of this
project. The total amount
raised will be revealed

September.

with the smell of suntan
lotion filling our noses,
