From Cape Town, the inland,
scenic Route 62 links the
Mother City with the Garden
Route via the arid Klein Karoo
(Little Karoo) region, passing
through fertile wine-growing
valleys and historic communities.
The Route 62 Wine Route spans 70 wine
farms in the northern Cape Winelands. Wine
towns to visit include 330-year-old Paarl,
(45 minutes from Cape Town), its 12km-long
Main Street lined with restaurants and coffee
shops; Wellington (45 minutes from Cape
Town) noted for its Cape Dutch homesteads,
gardens and wine farms; the neoclassical
architecture and wide, tree-lined streets of
Worcester (80 minutes from Cape Town); and
Robertson, western gateway to the heart of
Route 62. Things to see and do include:
Mandela’s long walk: The ‘Long Walk to
Freedom’ statue of Nelson Mandela
outside the gates of Drakenstein Correctional
Centre, near Paarl, marks where he spent his last 15
months in prison before being released in 1990.
River rafting: Raft on the Breede River near
Worcester from a base camp in a private
game reserve with Breakwater Adventures.
