Merle Schilf celebrates her 90th birthday
An open house was held at Trinity
Lutheran Church Hall on August 27
to celebrate the 90th birthday of Merle
Schilf who is a resident of Salem
Lutheran Aged Care Facility.
Merle was joined by her five children,
their spouses, several of her
grandchildren and great grandchildren
for the occasion along with her
only brother Desmond, her sister-inlaw
Myrna and many of her nieces
and nephews, cousins and family
friends.
Merle was born at the family home
‘Cattle Gully’ Quinalow on August
16, 1927, fourth child to Christi and
Rhoda Kanowski.
She attended the local school at
Quinalow until grade seven and then
helped out on the family farm.
She married Kevin Schilf who was
employed at the Maclagan Butchery
in Aril 1948.
After many moves around
Queensland operating various butcheries,
the family once again settled
in Maclagan in 1972 and re-opened
the Maclagan Butchery which is still
being operated by members of the
Schilf family today.
Merle looks forward to having
visitors at Salem and has been a resident
there for almost five years after
spending several years in a unit in
Toowoomba.
LADIES DAY
Please join us
Friday, October 13th, 2017
for a wonderiul day of food, fashion, inspirational
speakers and friendship at the beautiful
Walking among Granite Belt wild flowers
For those of us who grew up
in South-East Queensland with
extended families living on the
Downs, as well as the Sunshine
Coast, gathering wildflowers in
the August school holidays was
always a vacation pastime.
Fields of small flowers including
boronias, wattles, heaths,
pea flowers of various colours,
hops bushes and hibbertias were
examined in detail as we walked
through the local bush.
Over the years many of the
boronias, ground orchids and
tea trees disappeared nearer the
coast due to increased population
and urban development.
Some of these I have seen
in the local area around Crows
Nest during better weather conditions.
Volunteers of the Stanthorpe
Wild Flower Consortium, a wonder
group, show and promote
awareness of the importance of
improving and maintaining wild
GARDEN CLUB
flower eco systems in their own
area. It was a delight to join them
and see so many of the flowers
not seen for many years growing
in the granite boulders.
In small pockets of bushland
around the Crows Nest area
unique wild flowers and trees
GRANITE BORONIA
Preserving eco systems
can still be found but need to be
identified and promoted more,
hopefully bringing more visitors
to enjoy our own local areas like
the Valley of Diamonds, Crows
Nest falls and Applegum walk. -
Nest Garden Club.
