Merle Schilf celebrates her 90th birthday<br />

An open house was held at Trinity<br />

Lutheran Church Hall on August 27<br />

to celebrate the 90th birthday of Merle<br />

Schilf who is a resident of Salem<br />

Lutheran Aged Care Facility.<br />

Merle was joined by her five children,<br />

their spouses, several of her<br />

grandchildren and great grandchildren<br />

for the occasion along with her<br />

only brother Desmond, her sister-inlaw<br />

Myrna and many of her nieces<br />

and nephews, cousins and family<br />

friends.<br />

Merle was born at the family home<br />

‘Cattle Gully’ Quinalow on August<br />

16, 1927, fourth child to Christi and<br />

Rhoda Kanowski.<br />

She attended the local school at<br />

Quinalow until grade seven and then<br />

helped out on the family farm.<br />

She married Kevin Schilf who was<br />

employed at the Maclagan Butchery<br />

in Aril 1948.<br />

After many moves around<br />

Queensland operating various butcheries,<br />

the family once again settled<br />

in Maclagan in 1972 and re-opened<br />

the Maclagan Butchery which is still<br />

being operated by members of the<br />

Schilf family today.<br />

Merle looks forward to having<br />

visitors at Salem and has been a resident<br />

there for almost five years after<br />

spending several years in a unit in<br />

Toowoomba.<br />

Walking among Granite Belt wild flowers<br />

For those of us who grew up<br />

in South-East Queensland with<br />

extended families living on the<br />

Downs, as well as the Sunshine<br />

Coast, gathering wildflowers in<br />

the August school holidays was<br />

always a vacation pastime.<br />

Fields of small flowers including<br />

boronias, wattles, heaths,<br />

pea flowers of various colours,<br />

hops bushes and hibbertias were<br />

examined in detail as we walked<br />

through the local bush.<br />

Over the years many of the<br />

boronias, ground orchids and<br />

tea trees disappeared nearer the<br />

coast due to increased population<br />

and urban development.<br />

Some of these I have seen<br />

in the local area around Crows<br />

Nest during better weather conditions.<br />

Volunteers of the Stanthorpe<br />

Wild Flower Consortium, a wonder<br />

group, show and promote<br />

awareness of the importance of<br />

improving and maintaining wild<br />

GARDEN CLUB<br />

flower eco systems in their own<br />

area. It was a delight to join them<br />

and see so many of the flowers<br />

not seen for many years growing<br />

in the granite boulders.<br />

around the Crows Nest area<br />

unique wild flowers and trees<br />

Preserving eco systems<br />

can still be found but need to be<br />

identified and promoted more,<br />

hopefully bringing more visitors<br />

to enjoy our own local areas like<br />

the Valley of Diamonds, Crows<br />

Nest falls and Applegum walk. -<br />

Oakey floral<br />

luncheon<br />

The Oakey Uniting Church<br />

annual floral luncheon is on<br />

again at 16 John Street on Tuesday,<br />

October 3. Competition<br />

flowers need to be registered before<br />

10 am for judging.<br />

Cake and plant stalls will be<br />

operating. Guest speaker’s topic<br />

will be his work at the Oakey<br />

Historical Museum and tourism<br />

as it applies to our local area.<br />

Cold salad lunch will be<br />

served after the musical items.<br />
