Women encouraged to get out and get active
Women and girls of all ages
are being encouraged to get out
and get active with Toowoomba
Regional Council’s new Thrive
project.
To coincide with Women’s
Health Week, more than 200
free and low-cost activities are
being made available from September
through to May 2018 for
women and girls living in the
Toowoomba Region.
Deputy Mayor Carol Taylor
said the initiative was about empowering
women to have a go
at a range of fitness and outdoor
recreation activities they may
not have tried before.
“Research tells us more than
40 per cent of adult women in
Queensland are not achieving
the recommended 30 minutes
of moderate physical activity on
most days of the week,” she said.
“TRC secured additional funding
from the State Government
to provide more than 200 free or
low-cost options for women and
girls of all ages to get active.
“Toowoomba Regional Council
worked with the Queensland
Government to secure more than
$35,000 from the Government’s
Get Out, Get Active grant to provide
various fitness and outdoor
recreation programs specifically
The value of a $300 dollar egg
A little while ago I decided that it would be
good for the kids and I if we had our own chooks.
Our first egg arrived and I have just calculated
the cost: One chook pen @ $148 plus freight
- $200, three chooks @ 1$6.50 each - $49.50, one
bag of mash - $18, one watering dish - $25. Total
cost $292.50
Result to date - one egg
It will take a long time to recoup the investment
made in our chooks. Most of my friends who have
chooks have said that keeping them is a lifestyle
not a financial decision.
For me investing in our chooks is about the long
term benefits. Three chooks at three eggs a day =
21 eggs a week. Optimistically. that’s a bit less
than $10 return a week and that’s assuming they
lay consistently each day. At that rate, it will take
me almost a year to repay my initial investment
and it is likely that it will take much longer.
for women and girls across the
Toowoomba region,” Deputy
Mayor Cr Taylor said.
The female-only classes
include yoga, hula hooping,
mindful walks, Zumba, Konga,
kickboxing and strength classes,
along with a range of outdoor
recreation opportunities including
bushwalking, mountain biking,
kayaking and archery tag.
TRC will be offering new
Women on Wheels workshops
to provide women with a comfortable
park environment where
they can build their knowledge,
skills, and confidence to ride
more,” Crr Taylor said.
Children will also be encouraged
to get active by chasing
kittens, dragons, fairies, dinosaurs
and aliens at Magical Park
digital fantasy lands across the
region during school holidays.
Minister for Sport Mick de
I know my investment in spending time with the
kids and them learning about how to care for animals
is priceless.
Although the initial financial cost may be high,
there will be ongoing rewards. I think $300 might
end up looking quite cheap.
There is a passage from James one of the NT
writers that reminds us of the power of something
small. But, our words can have an enormous influence
on people’s lives and if chosen wisely can
open up possibilities that we may never have expected.
- James 3:4,5 (J B Phillips)
Ships too, for all their size and the momentum
they have with a strong wind behind them,
are controlled by a very small rudder according
to the course chosen by the helmsman. The human
tongue is physically small, but what tremendous
effects it can boast. - Pastor Chris Gribble,
Church of Christ.
Brenni believes this initiative
will help break down
barriers preventing females
from becoming active.
“This funding is the largest
of its kind in Queensland
and will provide the strongest
launch pad for women
and girls to foster life-long
participation in sport and active
recreation,” Minister de
Brenni said.
