Men's Sheds - Building communities and fixing lives The Australian Men’s Shed Association has officially launched 2017 Men’s Shed Week in partnership with the Bipartisan Friendship Group of Men’s Sheds at Parliament House. “Men’s Sheds aren’t just about building toys and fixing furniture. Men’s Sheds are building communities and fixing lives,” Australian Men’s Shed Association Executive Officer David Helmers said at the launch. The second annual Men’s Shed Week, themed doing local good, will be celebrated from Monday, September 25, to Sunday, October 1, to showcase the work of Men’s Sheds in contributing to local communities. “The benefits of Men’s Sheds extend well beyond the shed. Activities at the shed support local people, groups and organisations and bring people together in ways that strengthen communities,” Mr Helmers said. At the shed, men have the opportunity to find friendship, a sense of purpose and a place to belong and contribute. Many men live fuller and happier lives through their involvement with their shed. But it doesn’t stop there. Shedders devote most of their time to worthwhile community endeavours - delivering great benefits for the wider community through major projects, donating arts and crafts, participating in community events, and actively promoting men’s health and wellbeing. “The Australian Men’s Shed Association has been at the forefront of Men’s Shed innovations for a decade, and in that time we have seen the Men’s Sheds flourish across the world,” Mr Helmers said. The strength of the Men’s Shed concept is in its simplicity and adaptability to members’ and community needs, Bipartisan Friendship Group of Men’s Sheds Chair the Hon Mark Coulton MP when he officially opened Men’s Shed Week. “When it comes down to it, Men’s Sheds have become a vital investment because every community benefits when there’s a Men’s Shed in town,” Mr Helmers said. A Men’s Shed plays an important role in the prevention of social isolation and the promotion of positive health and wellbeing amongst men, as well as enabling men to positively (re)connect with their community. The male entered an unlocked office room and removed car keys for a silver Honda Civic Queensland registration 641 WPZ. The suspect male then went to the main car park and began walking through the car park, pressing the key unlock button until he managed to locate the vehicle. The male then drove the vehicle from the car park out onto Vacy Street. Police are seeking the identification of the male pictured, who may be able to assist them with their inquiries. Police are also seeking information as to the location of the pictured vehicle. Farmers question market failures By MILES NOLLER Biosecurity workshops The QDO will hold biosecurity workshops to help dairy farmers comply with new Queensland biosecurity laws. Farmers will be helped to develop a farm biosecurity plan and will be offered a free Bovine Johnes Disease test. There will be nine QDO workshops around Queensland, including Toowoomba on October 4, Kingaroy on October 3, and Gatton on October 5. • Rugby League legend Shane Webcke, with Harrisville dairy farmers, David Roderick, left, and Duncan and Mary McInnes. Shane Webcke addressed the QDO forum about workplace safety and the effects of the death of his father in a workplace accident. Dairy farmers asked many questions at the annual meeting of the Queensland Dairyfarmers Organisation in Toowoomba. But few, if any, got answers they would consider satisfactory. Key people the farmers had come to hear were Mick Keogh, head of the ACCC Dairy Inquiry, and Senator Chris Ketter, the Chair of the Senate Economics Committee which has been inquiring into the dairy industry. But generally, they did not have the answers for the industry, with farmer statements saying the industry was losing farmers at a fast rate, that farmers were paid 59 cents a litre for their milk in 1999, and were now paid 57 cents a litre. In 1999 both sides of government decided to deregulate the industry, which allowed supermarkets some years ago to sell milk for $1 a litre, which continues to rile farmers. QDO Chairman Brian Tessmann thanked Senator Ketter for diligently taking some pointed questions from the meeting, and said he was encouraged to hear that Senator Ketter supported making the code of conduct mandatory. The Effects Test changes the onus of proof in proving market manipulation, from proving intent to showing the effects of an action.
