Angel Program Kickoff Celebration 

Fundraising Event Will Feature Performance by 

Ariana Savalas and will Benefit the Organization’s 

Nutritional Support Program 

PALM SPRINGS – AAP – Food Samaritans (AAP) will begin its 

2017-2018 season with the annual Jeannette Rockefeller Angel 

Program Kickoff Celebration on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 6 

p.m. at a private estate in Palm Springs (address provided upon 

RSVP). The event is the main fundraising drive for AAP and 

enables the organization to continue to provide monthly food 

vouchers for its low-income clients who are living with HIV/AIDS 

and other chronic illnesses. There is no admission fee to attend, 

but attendance to the event implies an intention to participate in 

the AAP - Food Samaritans Angel Program. An RSVP is required

At the event, sultry performer Ariana Savalas will delight the 

audience with a blend of Gatsby-esque decadence, swing era sophistication, 

burlesque bawdiness, and Sunset Strip grit. Savalas, 

daughter of famed actor Telly Savalas, is a singer, dancer, songwriter, 

multi-instrumentalist, and comedienne extraordinaire. Over 

the course of an evening, she seduces, surprises and touches her 

audience – sometimes literally. After Ms. Savalas concludes, there 

will be an announcement that will reveal the entertainment for 

AAP’s 25th Anniversary Evening Under the Stars gala, coming up 

May 5, 2018.

local business support, special events, and foundation grants. As 

a grass roots organization, it looks to the community for ongoing 

support. It receives no Federal or State funding. Since its inception, 

AAP has distributed more than $10 million in direct client service 

to more than 2,300 clients. AAP’s clients get by on an annual 

income of less than $18,090.

Now in its 26th year of service to the community, AAP – Food 

Samaritans of Palm Springs remains dedicated to providing nutritional 

support to improve the quality of the lives of people living 

with HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses. Initiated by a small 

group of concerned citizens led by the late Gloria Greene and 

Jeannette Rockefeller, AAP provides nutritional support to members

Named in honor of philanthropist and activist Jeannette Rockefeller 

who helped establish the organization, the Angel Program provides

range of benefits depending on the level of support. Top donors 

receive tickets to Evening Under the Stars, recognition at the 

event, and a special annual Appreciation Dinner just for Angels.

“Living with a chronic illness is not easy,” said Mark Anton, CEO/ 

Executive Director of AAP – Food Samaritans. “While there have 

been developments in treating these illnesses, AAP’s clients are 

faced with daily challenges. AAP is there to provide comfort and 

support, and improve the quality of life for those who need it the 

most. At the event we hope to make a special announcement 

regarding a matching gift to the program.” 

AAP- Food Samaritans was founded in 1991 (as AIDS Assistance 

Program) with the goal of helping the most at-risk members of the 

Greater Palm Springs community: low-income people compromised 

by HIV/AIDS. It recently expanded its services to include 

people suffering from cancer, MS, heart or liver disease, and other 

chronic illnesses. A very small staff and volunteer board of directors 

work diligently to assure that the largest percentage of every 

donated dollar goes directly to client services. AAP raises 100% of

Preview has now been expanded to four days and 

will take place October 19-22 at various locations in 

the Coachella Valley. Tickets for all events may be

The weekend’s events provide attendees with 

a sampling of the events and activities that will be 

offered during the annual 11-day festival in February 

2018. Highlights of the October Fall Preview include a 

wide range of tours in Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage,

Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus and Charles 

Phoenix-led bus tours, a new tour showcasing homes

plaque and it forms very quick after eating. 

The better hygiene a person has, the less 

they will have decay. It takes both sugar and 

plaque to decay a tooth. The more you brush 

and floss, the more plaque removed and the 

less risk of decay. 

Additionally, elderly patients also tend to have 

more decay. It is more obvious with elderly 

patients who are loosing their dexterity, and 

in general they tend to eat more sweets more 

often, and not brush as often. 

There is also another component that needs 

to be explained here. In the mouth there are 

several types of bacteria. Some are responsible 

for gum disease and some are responsible 

for decay. Some people may have the best 

hygiene and still have gum disease and some 

who have the worst hygiene may not suffer 

from gum disease at all. This is because they 

do not have the bacteria responsible for gum 

disease. Same thing for decay. Some people 

will be more susceptible to decay then others 

even if they eat just a little sugar and have 

decent dental hygiene. That is because they 

have that kind of bacteria in their mouth in a 

higher rate then another person. But that is 

not a reasonable excuse. More brushing 

and plaque control with a topical fluoride 

application daily, preferably with a special 

personal tray made at the dental office will 

help. 

Very rarely a person will suffer from gum 

disease and a high rate of decay. It is 

generally one or the other. If someone has 

a high rate of decay, in general they will 

not suffer from gum disease like bone loss, 

periodontal pockets and tooth mobility. 

It is a proven fact though, that the better 

the dental hygiene you have and the better 

your diet is in terms of limiting sugar intake, 

the healthier your gums and teeth will be. 

So, it is not true that decay affect only 

kids. As long as you have one tooth in your 

mouth you are subject to get decay if you 

leave dental plaque on it and eat sugar! 

The best way to prevent that is to have 

good dental hygiene at home and brushing 

after any sugar intake, and to visit your 

dentist 2 to 3 times a year.

Do you think that dental cavities are 

problems only for children? 

It is a general belief that cavities are for kids 

only. But in fact, cavities affect all ages! 

The reason why cavities are more prevalent 

in children is mainly the fact that they tend 

to eat more sugar and have poor hygiene 

habits. However, when looking at the cause 

of decay, which is basically plaque with the 

presence of sugar, it is easy to understand 

that cavities can happen at any age even if 

your mouth is full of crowns. 

Of course there are some people who have 

teeth that are softer then others and are 

easier to decay but that affects only 1% of 

the population. Basically any diet rich in 

sugar will increase your chance of decay. 

Soft drinks, candies and anything sweet 

will have a potency to create decay in the 

presence of dental plaque. Of course in 

order to create decay there has to be the 

bacteria that will transfer the sugar into

Film Screening October 12 Benefitting Desert AIDS Project 

PALM SPRINGS, CA- Local film producers 

Jim Burba and Bob Hayes are proudly 

presenting a screening of the new film 

‘Walking Out’ on October 12 to benefit 

Desert AIDS Project. The film premiered 

at Sundance and stars Matt Bomer, Josh 

Wiggins and Bill Pullman. 

Walking Out is based on the masterpiece 

American short story by David Quammen. 

The film is a searing portrait about a teen, 

David (Josh Wiggins) and his unwavering 

will to survive and save his estranged 

father, Cal (Matt Bomer) from the harsh 

Montana wilderness after an encounter 

with wildlife. David’s life is forever changed 

during the annual hunting trip that becomes 

an extraordinary quest for him to truly 

know his father. At the heart of this story 

is the unspoken, fragile bond between a 

father and a son. The film is set against the 

visually stunning, unforgiving landscape 

of the vast Montana wilderness. The wild 

and unruly landscape juxtaposed against 

the harmonious habitat of animals living 

freely, symbolically represents the complex 

relationship between David and his father. 

His father’s deep, but flawed, spiritual connection 

to the severe, yet peaceful terrain 

drives this poetic story forward. 

Walking Out offers a glimpse into the 

strained relationship between David and 

his father as they embark on a hunting 

trip for moose, deep into the remote 

wilderness that is gripped by a cold front 

and heavy snow. Divorced from David’s 

mother who “could not handle” the harsh 

and isolating life in Montana, Cal is also 

haunted by his past regrets. 

Losing his own mother at a young age, 

Cal was raised by his father, an avid 

hunter who graced the land with his reverenceto 

the natural world as if he and the 

mountain were one. 

The abyss of silence that frames their 

relationship is deepened further by Cal’s 

rumination about his complicated relationship 

with his own father. The last time 

Cal went hunting with his father he was 

close to David’s age. The events of that 

day changed their relationship forever and 

it weighs heavily on Cal’s conscious. His 

behavior impacts his tumultuous relationship 

with David, who he sees once a year 

since being divorced by his mother. Cal’s 

detached and bitter demeanor aggravates 

their fractured relationship. 

Their hunting trip, punctuated by tense 

interactions, is shattered when a wounded 

grizzly bear cub attacks David and mauls 

his hand. Cal saves his son from the 

ferociouscub and helps him up the tree to 

safety. Knowing the mother bear is likely 

nearby and will return for vengeance, Cal 

hurriedly hands his gun to David who is 

clinging to the tree branches with the use 

of only one hand. Throughout the chaos 

and confusion, David shoots his father by 

mistake. The bullet lacerates his knee, 

exiting the bottom of Cal’s foot. Unable to

walk and is bleeding profusely, Cal urges 

David to leave him and get help 

because he is unable to walk. Filled with 

despair and unfamiliar with the snowy 

terrain, David resists his father’s pleas to 

leave him. After futile attempts to hike out 

together, David resolves to carry his father 

on his back and walk through the snowfall 

and unyielding wilderness determined to 

save his father and heal his broken spirit. 

This adventure, drama, mystery stars,

Lefty Brown, Independence Day, While 

You Were Sleeping), and Josh Wiggins

Out exposes the tortured past of an avid 

hunter and his courageous son and their

About Executive Producers Jim Burba 

and Bob Hayes. The two received the 

Partners for Life Award at the 2017 Steve 

Chase Humanitarian Awards for their ongoing 

support of Desert AIDS Project. The 

Palm Springs home owners were married 

in 2014 on the stage of the Nokia Theatre 

(now Microsoft Theatre) in Los Angeles. As 

co-founders of the Burba Hotel Network 

(BHN), the enterprising couple develop 

and produce the world’s most prominent

There’s been a ghost in my family for 30 years now. He has been seen in 

over 100 countries and has been viewed by over 107 million readers. His 

name is Andrew Neiderman and he’s the ghostwriter for V.C. Andrews. 

My dad, Andrew Neiderman, is a successful writer under his own name 

with over 45 published books such as PIN, TENDER LOVING CARE, 

and THE DEVIL’S ADVOCATE. However, it was Anita Diamant, the 

agent for both my father and Virginia Andrews, who brought out the 

ghost. Virginia was in the last stages of her fatal illness when the need for 

someone to complete a V. C. Andrews novel was satisfied by my father’s 

success in writing with young people as his main characters.

When he began his “transformation” my dad was the chairman 

of the English department at Fallsburg High School in 

upstate New York. After creating a creative writing course 

for the seniors of Fallsburg High School, he decided to 

study Virginia Andrews’ work as if he were doing a graduate 

level paper on the author. Early on in his college career, 

he enjoyed writing like famous authors. But to his shock 

when he wrote his first paper in freshman composition in 

the style of William Faulkner, he received a D. Apparently, 

style and visual metaphor had no place in cold, workaday 

prose. 

But it sure had a place in writing V. C. Andrews. My dad 

quickly discovered V.C. Andrews had put her mark on her 

own phraseology, character development, setting description, 

and most important, plot development. He took 

copious notes and constantly referred back to earlier books. 

My dad did his homework diligently. 

In the beginning years, my dad used to write as V.C. 

Andrews on one computer and as Andrew Neiderman on 

another. Perhaps it was her spirit that engulfed the V. C. 

computer or maybe it is just the way my dad’s brain works, 

but this is what worked for him. 

My dad doesn’t just write the books, he is very much 

immersed in the promotion of his books. Over the years, 

he has traveled almost everywhere meeting with agents, 

salespeople, and publishers. At times these meetings have 

proven to be interesting. Once when he met with his South 

Korean publisher and editors, he noticed the female editor 

staring at him. When he asked the one editor who spoke 

English why she was staring at him, he replied, ‘Because she 

can’t believe you are a woman.” 

Now 30 years later, the books have sold over 107 million 

copies in over 100 countries, including recent acquisitions 

by Mainland China. The reception to the work remains 

strong with the newest series, Mirror Sisters, the filming of 

another Lifetime movie starting this Fall, and the development 

of the stage play of Flowers in the Attic, along with 

many more exciting announcements to come. 

My father continues to be grateful and honored to be 

among ghosts and hopes to keep this one alive for some 

time to come. It is a huge responsibility to carry this forward 

and I watch in awe as my father remains possessed to 

work hard to enforce the authenticity of V.C. Andrews as 

well as, keeping true to his own genre of writing.

I have attended fashion week events 

in NYC since waaaaayyyyy back in the 

day when I used to walk the runway 

myself at Bryant Park. Fashion Week in 

NYC has morphed into a very different 

experience in recent years and Style 

Fashion Week, under the genius mission 

and management of owners Lee and 

Veronica Kerzner, has absolutely been a 

catalyst for bringing all of the glamour, 

celebs, edginess and creativity back to 

the New York stage. This season, the 

shows were aboard the Intrepid Sea, 

Air & Space Museum...yes, you read 

correctly, fashion week aboard a huge 

aircraft carrier! WOW! It truly was an

Mama’s House, the only residential home in the 

Coachella Valley providing shelter for women in 

pregnancy crises, has expanded educational and 

counseling services for their residents and the 

community with the recent opening of the Hope 

Center at 44875 Deep Canyon, Suite 2,Palm Desert, CA 

92260. 

Mama’s House opened the doors to its first resident 

mother in July 2013. It offers a safe, supportive, loving 

residential environment for women who are facing an 

unplanned pregnancy, vulnerable with no place to live 

or means of support. 

It addresses the needs of women who are living in 

unhealthy situations and desire change. Resident 

mothers are educated about life’s healing choices, their 

developing unborn babies, parenting at all ages, as 

well as the devastation caused by addiction, prenatal 

substance abuse, post-partum depression, suicide, and 

abortion experiences. 

Mama’s House provides hope, shares the truth, and 

enables courage while serving others with compassion. 

Those who have been captive to drugs, alcohol, careless 

sex, domestic violence, homelessness, shame and more 

are given necessary tools to overcome, make changes 

and get on track for success and an abundant life. 

In the new Hope Center, Hope Center a full spectrum 

of education and counseling programs with special 

attention for women in pregnancy crises is facilitated 

by a suite of offices, meeting and classroom space. 

Hope Center is envisioned to be a place for the 

community to connect and benefit by providing 

services including adult education, Courage to Heal, 

support groups, parenting modules, adult and infant 

CPR, and more. 

The center currently offers Earn & Learn, a 100-hour 

parenting curriculum, GED classes as a Coachella 

Valley Adult School site to receive a GED or high school

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a 

new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), 

unearths a long-buried secret that has 

the potential to plunge what’s left of society into 

chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find 

Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD 

blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. 

We are loving working with 

Warner Bros. to bring you 

interviews and reports on films 

that are not yet released to 

the public. This time we got 

access to the link to the trailer 

of Blade Runner 2049. However, 

it is the official trailer for 

the film. The movie is set for 

an October 6 release date. 

The Official Trailer begins with 

brilliant colors all set in an Atari 

game...think MATRIX. 

A huge hologram of a beautiful 

modern woman points to the 

life size and even more beautiful 

Ryan Gosling. At this point I 

am all in this movie! 

I was a huge Blade Runner 

fan back in 1982. The whole 

futuristic storyline, and the 

coloring of the film attracted 

me to it. Then I fell into the 

movie with full fantasy. I read 

up on the director, Ridley Scott 

and became a fan of his films. 

Then in 2007 Blade Runner: 

The Final Cut came to the theatres. 

After watching this film 

I can remember how it sprung 

memories from the first film. 

How the story moved into other 

dimensions baffled me until I 

accepted that there are other 

realities and levels of life. This 

is something I always felt. 

Now I am being shown in a 

dreamlike ride through tangible 

and real life happenings in 

one awesome movie. Is it art 

imitates life kind of thing? 

Now in 2017 Ridley Scott 

brings us the most intriguing 

film in the 3 movie brand he 

has created. Blade Runner 

2049 reveals a dark side of the 

future where people are separated 

in two distinct societies 

held apart from one another. 

But why? 

Detective K played by Ryan 

Gosling dares to go there. The 

trailer does a good job. We get 

to see some plot without giving 

the story away. You want a 

trailer to get the attention of the 

viewer but leave them thirsting 

for more. 

The first scene is set in the 

massive world headquarters 

of the Tyrell Corporation. It is 

pyramid shape and dark. Ridley 

Scott's design director did 

an amazing job at the interior 

of the pyramid making it look 

almost exactly like it did in the 

1982 original movie. 

Soon into the trailer you see 

'Replicans', un-borned people 

in glass boxes lined up. Almost 

like a glass pipe that is getting 

dark. Then a person is 'born' as 

a young woman falling out of a 

clear plastic like womb maybe 

resembling a garbage bag to 

show you that humans are 

expendable. 

Ridley Scott leaves in the 

'Atara' game look keeping the 

film like the original. I have 

said many times that films that 

have sequels that they need 

to update things besides the 

storyline, but in this case Scott 

relives the imagery and it works 

to blend the sequels together. 

So just what is happening in 

2049? 

Blade Runner Agent K is 

there to keep ORDER. Set in 

a world where there are two 

distinct societies and if anyone 

asks why life is like this you are 

in serious trouble. You cannot 

even talk about why things 

are this way. One section of 

society lives very surreal and 

dreamlike while the others... 

well, they are on their on. The 

humans and the 'replicants' are 

at odds. Each wants to take 

the other out. Survival of the 

fittest comes in vogue. 

The mission of Agent K is to reveal 

that the replicants are too 

prevalent in society and they 

now are attempting to become 

the only ones. Agent K now 

meets Harrison Ford's character 

who was a Blade Runner 

back in his earlier days. But 

Agent K cannot be sure if Ford 

is a 'replicant' or not. 

It has gotten so bad that 

'Replicants' have infiltrated the 

LA Police and other high level 

command positions around the 

planet. 

Love and emotions enter the 

cast and things get more interesting. 

As one might say the 

plot thickens. 

Will the 'Replicants' take over 

societies and be ridden of 

humans once and for all? You 

will have to wait till October 6 

when the film is released to find 

out. So let's find out together 

in October!

Originally from San Jose, California, 

vocalist and songwriter Eric Michael 

Krop discovered his musical abilities 

at a young age. Hailing from a musical 

family, Eric gleaned much of his early 

inspiration from his grandparents. 

He would go on to hone his chops at 

AMDA in New York, thus introducing 

him to a city he would call home for the 

next ten years. 

Eric has since made a name for himself 

as one of the most preeminent young 

vocalists on the pop and musical theater 

scene, performing in Godspell on 

Broadway, headlining several cabaret 

performances at top NYC and L.A venues 

such as 54 Below and Rockwell, 

and appearing in Equity theater productions 

nationwide. 

In the past few years Eric has focused

quickly gained traction. Eric plans on 

releasing an album with Eric & Erica. 

When he is not touring, Eric spends 

his time in Whitefish, Montana and Los 

Angeles collaborating with local musicians 

and recording new material.

David Beckham, who owns a 

Major League Soccer franchise, 

is in talks to land his soccer 

team in the new proposed Las 

Vegas stadium. 

The Raiders will remain in Oakland for at least the 

2017 and 2018 seasons. The 2019 season is still up 

in the air, as the Raiders’ new stadium is expected to 

take three years to build. 

The state of Nevada approved $750 million for a new 

stadium. Raiders owner Mark Davis pledged $500 million 

toward the project, and a report from the Southern 

Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee estimates 

the total stadium cost to be $1.9 billion.

The renderings of the stadium, via Manica Architecture 

and the Las Vegas Review-Journal, do portray a 

flashy, eye-catching stadium.
