The <strong>Basilei</strong> story began as two sons watched their father exhibit his<br />

meticulous craftsmanship in the kitchen. Their dad had committed<br />

himself to the skill of producing a variety of beautiful desserts and<br />

treats, whilst his two boys observed and tasted the fruit of his<br />

labour. There was always a careful attention to detail and a passion<br />

for innovation. Years later, pioneering brothers, Marcos and Istvan,<br />

decided to introduce the world to the same delicacies. Today, <strong>Basilei</strong><br />

Handcrafted Confectionery is committed to producing the finest sweet<br />

delicacies with style and creativity. Now, the <strong>Basilei</strong> Team is rapidly<br />

ushering in a new experience of sweet in South Africa and beyond.

The <strong>Basilei</strong> kitchen is where heritage marries creativity. Our mission<br />

is to craft every product with integrity to our family’s tradition, all<br />

whilst pushing the envelope of dessert creation. We believe that the<br />

timely process of manufacturing by hand is how all of our products<br />

are infused with excellence and marked with precision. <strong>Basilei</strong>’s team<br />

are the makers of their signature Luxury Fudges, Cream Cheese<br />

Dark Chocolate Brownies, Italian Inspired Nougat, Floral Flavoured<br />

Marshmallows and Macaroons.

Brought to a boil / Our products are all made in large copper pots.


<strong>Basilei</strong>’s luxury fudges are boiled in large copper pots until a precisely<br />

calculated temperature is reached. Thereafter, the hot mess is poured<br />

onto a cold marble slab. The ancient stone acts as a natural cooling agent,<br />

which contributes to the smooth texture of the finished product. Once<br />

the mixture has cooled enough, it is infused with oxygen by working it over<br />

by hand. When the time is right, the fudge is placed into a cast where it<br />

remains overnight. Our luxury fudges are cut and packaged by hand, each<br />

one carefully made for your enjoyment. Upon tasting the fudge, its texture<br />

is soft and melts away on the pallet.

Few are aware that there are many siblings to the French Nougat, spanning<br />

from Spain to Morocco, the Nougat Family is a taste sensation to be<br />

explored. The year was 2008, on a freezing morning we stumbled upon a<br />

small deli in Venice. There we first laid eyes on the delectable Italian Nougat<br />

cakes. The <strong>Basilei</strong> Kitchen has drawn inspiration from that initial encounter to<br />

produce our Italian Inspired Nougat. The egg-based product first impression<br />

is similar to a meringue, but quickly softens to a melting texture.

Delicate, tender and sweet, the <strong>Basilei</strong> macaron is formed of the perfect<br />

union of a feminine froth of white meringue gently folded into powdered<br />

sugar and fine almond meal, then barely scented with our signature flavours.<br />

Piped out into shiny mounds, to puff up in the warmth of the oven and<br />

transform into perfectly domed, nutty shells. Light as air, each ethereal shell<br />

is paired with another and sandwiched around a luxurious ganache, allowing<br />

for a burst of flavour and texture. Hold one tiny creation in the palm of your<br />

hand, admire the elegance, the shape and colour, anticipating the crack of<br />

first bite, swiftly followed by the tender, chewy centre. Such is the nature of<br />

the <strong>Basilei</strong> Macaron, perfect for weddings, gifting or enjoyed with the solace<br />

of your next cup of tea.

Salted pecan nuts, smothered in traditional melt-in-the-mouth caramel,<br />

poured onto a base layer of chocolate. Once enjoyed, the silk appearance<br />

of the caramel is well met with the nut crunch of the pecans. These bars<br />

are the unexpected gift that is always well received, the out-of-the-box<br />

gesture that leaves a lasting impression. The combination of flavours is tried<br />

and tested and yet enticing and curious, the perfect collaboration for candy<br />

purists and boundary-pushing food adventurers.
