IT WAS APRIL FOOLS DAY AND THE ALL GOLDS HAD THE LAST LAUGH, TURNING THE TABLES ON THEIR HOSTS TO COME AWAY WITH A MEMORABLE VICTORY. Just six days after being beaten comfortably by Workington in the league, the All Golds travelled back to the glorious Lake District to face Town again, this time in the League 1 Cup Quarter Final. The weather was vastly different with leaden skies bringing drizzle and heavier showers replacing the bright sunshine of the previous week. The All Golds side was different too with Alex Gaskell and Bead Kislingbury absent through injury and Graham O’Keeffe making his first appearance in the squad for almost a year. They also made fewer mistakes than Town and took advantage of the chances that came their way to lead 18-6 at the break through Phil Cowburn, Harry Kidd and Steve Parry. Ten minutes into the second half and a resurgent Town had wiped out their deficit with two converted tries and were looking to take the lead. Phil Lister’s try crucially went unconverted as Carl Forber missed for the first time in 13 attempts over the two games between the sides. This meant that Kieran Hyde had to convert Chris Barlow’s touchdown to restore the All Golds’ lead. The score going into the final fifteen minutes was eerily similar to that at the same point six days previously but the All Golds this time were ahead. The league game had seen Town turn on the power and the All Golds touched the ball just twice as Town ran in five converted tries in those fifteen minutes. This time, things were different. The final 15 minutes were tense as Town battered the line but the All Golds kept them out, went through their sets in possession and kept Town at long range with Hyde’s boot turning Town around and forcing them to move the ball 80 or 90 metres to get into a position to strike. Finally, Town made one mistake too many and Phil Cowburn snapped up a loose ball to race 60 metres through the mud and though he looked as if he was treading water for the final few metres he reached the line to score and confirm a semi final place for the second year running. Again, the game showed what the All Golds were capable of. They took chances and defended heroically. They executed a strong game plan and kept the intensity and belief to the last minute. Reflecting in the hotel that night, there was a sense of satisfaction, a sense that the team had proved that they were capable of overcoming the Northern teams and the only disappointing thing is that such wins are all too rare. 21 Subscribe to our website mailing list to get exclusive All Golds news first.
