With rumours gathering pace that these
two clubs will be merging for next season,
there was plenty of interest in what could
be the last game between them.
Oxford were on a dreadful losing run but
had drawn their last match while the All
Golds had lost their last match after two
successive wins.
Tradition or a quirk of fate has it that the
sides share wins each season and with the
All Golds having won comfortably earlier in
the season, perhaps it was inevitable that
the dark blues would turn the tables and
the form book upside down.
In a dour match, Oxford took a slender 6-0
lead into the break but six minutes into the
second half, the All Golds were level through
Phil Cowburn.
Oxford hit back straight away and scored
back to back tries to take an 18-0 lead. Up
stepped Kieran Hyde to put the boot into
his former teammates.
Much as he had in the cup win at Workington
earlier in the season, Hyde’s kicking game
came to the fore and he pinned the All
Golds back.
Harry Kidd crashed over to halve the deficit
but with Hyde pushing them back, there
was little chance of them getting the leveller
and fate was satisfied.
