WELCOME TO
THE ALL GOLD
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
So here we are, the final game of what has been a
memorable season for the club.
4
Three wins against
North Wales Crusaders,
a stunning triumph at
Workington, a 46-22
hammering of Keighley,
a game on live television
in Toronto, four players
gaining international
honours at the Student
World Cup, another four
players on the brink of
selection for the Rugby
League World Cup in
Australia - what a fantastic
achievement for a club
still in its infancy.
This will be Lee
Greenwood’s last game
in charge of the club as
he says goodbye after
three years in charge.
Lee came to the club
promising to cultivate
a local player base and
he can be very proud of
what he’s achieved. His
decision not to go down
the dual-registration route
should be commended as
should his commitment
to showing faith in youth.
The average age of our
starting line-up last
weekend was 23 which
shows the game has a
very promising future in
these parts. On behalf of
everyone at the club I’d
like to thank Lee for his
dedication and wish him
all the best for the future.
Another person who
deserves great credit
is our general manager
Pat Evans. Pat works
incredibly hard to make
sure everything at the
club runs smoothly,
our trip to Toronto is
testament to his fantastic
organisational skills. We all
passed through customs -
twice - with consummate
ease and that was thanks
to the countless hours Pat
spent filling in enough
paperwork to sink a
battleship.
2017 has been our most
successful season to
date. Those incredible
wins against Keighley
and Workington will stay
with me for a long time
and I’m sure anyone that
was present for either of
the games will say the
same. League 1 is a tough
division, for a team as
young and inexperienced
as ours to compete for
a place inside the top
eight was nothing short
of magnificent. Well done
to every single player who
has worn the Golden Fern
this season, you’ve done
yourselves proud.
I’d like to finish by thanking
all of the wonderful people
who have helped the club
throughout the season.
There are far too many
to name, you know who
you are. Your dedication is
humbling, thank you.
Here’s to one more All
Golds win.
FIVE YEARS OF
THE GOLDEN FERN
WRITTEN BY GEORGE COWBURN
6
In the good old days of the USSR there was
a five year plan for just about everything. I’m
not sure what the All Golds’ five year plan
was but at the end of their fifth season in
senior rugby league I thought it appropriate
the look back at the first match for the
Golden Fern especially as it was against
today’s opponents Hemel Stags.
Back then to Sunday March 3rd 2013 and our
first match in the Northern Rail Cup against
the Stags before a crowd of 256 plus rugby
league luminaries such as Ralph Rimmer,
chief operations officer of the Rugby
League, Niel Wood, chief communications
director, and Dennis Betts ex Wigan and
Great Britain player and present Widnes
Vikings coach.
The All Golds team that day was:- Phil
Cowburn, James Gahan, Callum Mulkeen,
Tim Bergin, Maxime Claustres, James
Greene, Matt Bradley, Mike Stewart, Rory
Sharratt, James Walter, Joe Maclean,
Richard Jones, Jordan Rice and Subs Sam
Blaney, Marcus Brooker, Jamie Crowther
and Tyla Hepi (son of head coach Brad
Hepi).
Fourteen of those players graduated from
the successful 2012 student champions of
Great Britain All Golds squad and for them
it was a huge leap into competitive senior
rugby league.
Some fell by the wayside but happily four
of that team have played for the Golden
Fern this season (messrs Cowburn, Walter,
Maclean and Jones) with the first three
clocking up a full five years service for the
club and Phil Cowburn recently passing the
one hundred appearances mark.
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby

Callum Mulkeen has played
for North Wales Crusaders
this season (and Oxford
previously also) and
Tyla Hepi is starring for
Toulouse Olympique in the
Championship having also
played for Whitehaven.
Marcus Brooker - a Bristol
Sonics product - has been
a stalwart performer for
Oxford for the last four
seasons and Mike Stewart
had a spell with the Stags
after he left the All Golds.
Club record points scorer
Matt Bradley has also played
for London Skolars, Swinton
Lions and North Wales
Crusaders whilst popular
winger Maxime Claustres
is now back in France after
adding some Gallic flair to
the student and league 1 All
Golds sides.
Jordan Rice and Sam
Blainey both had a season
with Oxford before returning
north and Jamie Crowther
later had a loan spell with
the Stags before doing the
same. Rory Sharratt also
spent a season at Oxford
The actual match was
won by Hemel 36-18 with
the greater experience of
their side telling in the end
although the All Golds led
16-12 at half time.
Callum Mulkeen had the
honour of scoring the All
Golds’ first points - a try in
the corner after an excellent
Jordan Rice cut out pass.
The “Rice Pig” also got a
try after a thrilling 60 yard
move with Maxime Claustres
and Tim Bergin weighed in
with the other touchdown.
Matt Bradley added three
goals. Jimmy Gahan
unfortunately got the All
Golds first yellow card, from
referee Jamie Bloem, after
a scuffle with Aaron Small
who joined him in the bin.
Jordan Rice was adjudged
the best All Golds performer
having been involved in
all three tries and dualregistered
London Broncos
forward Chris Melling was
the Stags’ top man and
most influential player on
the day.
7
It was the first match in
a tough old season for
the Golden Fern who
finished bottom of the
league with just two wins
plus two victories in cup
competitions. However the
experience gained in that
season has stood the club
and those players in good
stead since with improved
league positions and some
memorable victories in cup
matches.
ALL GOLDS vs. HEMEL
MATCH PREVIEW
WRITTEN BY PATRICK BAINES
The All Golds play their last game of the
season on Sunday when they host Hemel
Stags at the Prince of Wales stadium.
It will be Lee Greenwood’s last game in
charge of the Golden Fern as he bows
out after three seasons in charge and the
head coach says he’s desperate to end his
tenure with a win. He said: “It will be sad to
say goodbye to so many great people I’ve
worked with with these last three years,
the players and staff have all played a
big part in our success. I’ve really enjoyed
my time here, we’ve had some great wins
against some big sides. This season has
been an enjoyable won, we’ve won more
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby

games than ever before and we want to
add to that tally on Sunday.
“It will be really nice for myself and the
players if we can get the win against
Hemel. It’s been a long season and we’ve
had some great performances along the
way, hopefully there’s one more coming on
Sunday. Hemel are much improved from
earlier in the season so we know what to
expect. They’ll be wanting to end their
season with a win as well so it’s important
we show the necessary enthusiasm and
attitude.
“I’m not too fussed on the performance
it’s just about getting that win. We had a
close game down in Hemel a few months
back, we’re aware of their strengths so it’s
important we work hard to nullify them.
Whatever happens on Sunday I’m proud
of what I’ve achieved here. We’ve got a
lot of players who are based in the area
and a young, hungry squad who want to
go places in the game. We’ll have a good
couple of training sessions before Sunday
and hopefully get the win to end what has
been a good season.”
Lewis Reece, Chris Worrall and James
Walter, who all missed out with injury last
weekend, will be hoping to return to the
squad for Sunday.
The Golden Fern began their 2017 season
with a game against Hemel. That 48-
12 win in the League 1 Cup set the tone
for some early season success with wins
against North Wales Crusaders, Keighley
and Workington giving the club a platform
to build on. A place inside the top eight
proved a step too far but the 2017 season
has been the most successful one to date
for the All Golds. The two teams last met
on a blisteringly hot day in June when the
All Golds showed great heart to come
back from 16-8 down to win 32-20.
After a poor 2016 season Hemel made the
radical step of basing themselves up in
Yorkshire. Unfortunately for the Stags this
decision didn’t improve their fortunes and
they’ve spent the 2017 season battling it
out with South Wales and Coventry at the
bottom of League 1. Their performances
have improved as the season has gone
on though, so the home side know they’ll
need to be at their best on Sunday.
TODAY’S OPPONENTS
HEMEL STAGS
WRITTEN BY JACK CONLON
12
FORM
After a horrendous start to the season, Hemel
have upped their game significantly as they
look to avoid the wooden spoon in 2017. They
currently sit in 7th, just one point above lastplaced
South Wales thanks to superb wins
over Oxford and the Ironmen. Despite their
resurgence, the Stags are without a win in
their last three, most recently going down
60-16 to League 1 Shield finalists Hunslet.
Just like us, however, Troy Perkins’ side will be
looking to end the season on a high and so
will undoubtedly come to the Prince of Wales
in a determined mood.
BACKS
A big positive for Hemel is that their squad
has developed massively from the one that
we faced back in February. They’ve retained
a few players, but have seen a huge reshuffle
over the course of 2017, particularly in the
backs. Former All Gold Mark Barlow is one
that has seen the whole season through, but
now has competition from Lewis Fairhurst,
who came in from Dewsbury, and Hull
youngster Jack Wray. Likewise, fullback
Mitch Vincent will compete with former
Doncaster threequarter Matty Welham for
the no.1 berth.
The Stags have been bolstered outwide by
Keighley loan duo Josh Casey and Danny
Lawton, with the latter bringing in a wealth
of experience having played over 100 games
for his parent club. That experience will be
valuable for the likes of Connor Bower, also
on loan from Hull, and Alex Williams, who is
in his forst season as a professional player.
The Stags’ backline is completed by winger
Darren Forde and former Leeds and Hunslet
utility Marcus Elliott.
www.allgoldsrugby.com
FORWARDS
There aren’t as many big names in the
Stags’ forward pack, but that doesn’t
mean they aren’t just as formidable.
Former Keighley prop Dan Hawksworth
has led from the front all year, with Wayne
Jowett, Danny Samuels and Jamaica
international Reece Williams backing him
up. Former All Golds Corey Hanson came
in mid-season and has been a revelation,
adding further strength and experience.
Hemel’s second row is youthful, but full
of flare. Bradford Bulls academy graduate
James Thornton has impressed all year
and has now been joined by Manashe
Fumandha, who is a real handful with ball
in-hand. Also keep an eye out for Italian
international and former Sheffield Eagle
Santino Decaro, who will come off the
bench. Hooker Jono Burns has a great
running game out of dummy half and
rotates well with Scott Lee.
STAR MAN
ONE TO WATCH
When we faced Hemel back in February,
one thing they lacked was a dominant
halfback. The signing of Lewis Fairhurst,
therefore, has completely transformed
their attack. The former St Helens and
Salford academy graduate was a major
coup for the Stags when he linked up after
impressing at Championship level with
partner club Dewsbury.
His organisational skills are his biggest
asset, as he takes pressure off his fellow
playmakers and allows them to chime
into the attack whenever they feel. At just
21 years-of-age, Fairhurst is still quite a
raw talent, but his potential has certainly
shone through at the Stags this season.
As everyone knows, a team can’t run without
it’s halves, which is why Fairhurst’s halfback
partner is my one to watch this week. Jack
Wray has had a strong but frustrating
start to his professional career, but his stint
with the Stags is sure to do him a world
of good. The 19-year-old started his career
with Leeds Rhinos, coming through the
academy system and playing alongside the
likes of Jordan Lilley and Ashton Golding. He
signed then signed a three-year deal with
Hull at the start of this season but has found
opportunities hard to come by this year,
with the club recently announcing he will be
released at the end of 2017.
Before joining
Hemel, Wray
was a standout
performer for FC’s
reserve side. His
vision and natural
handing ability
assisted many
a try, while he
doesn’t shy away
from his defensive
responsibilities
either. The end
of the reserves
season allowed Wray to join the Stags,
giving him the opportunity to play against
men and further his development. He’s
struck up a great partnership with Fairhurst
and continues to torment defences with his
dynamic attack.
OXFORD TURN
THE TABLES
ALL GOLDS 12 – 18 OXFORD
SUNDAY 03 SEPTEMBER 2017
PRINCE OF WALES STADIUM
With rumours gathering pace that these
two clubs will be merging for next season,
there was plenty of interest in what could
be the last game between them.
Oxford were on a dreadful losing run but
had drawn their last match while the All
Golds had lost their last match after two
successive wins.
Tradition or a quirk of fate has it that the
sides share wins each season and with the
All Golds having won comfortably earlier in
the season, perhaps it was inevitable that
the dark blues would turn the tables and
the form book upside down.
In a dour match, Oxford took a slender 6-0
lead into the break but six minutes into the
second half, the All Golds were level through
Phil Cowburn.
Oxford hit back straight away and scored
back to back tries to take an 18-0 lead. Up
stepped Kieran Hyde to put the boot into
his former teammates.
Much as he had in the cup win at Workington
earlier in the season, Hyde’s kicking game
came to the fore and he pinned the All
Golds back.
Harry Kidd crashed over to halve the deficit
but with Hyde pushing them back, there
was little chance of them getting the leveller
and fate was satisfied.
SKOLARS TOUGH
OUT A WIN
SKOLARS 16 – 06 ALL GOLDS
SATURDAY 09 SEPTEMBER 2017
NEW RIVER STADIUM
While the bounceback from the defeat against
Oxford did not result in a win, the all Golds put
in a gutsy performance that could have brought
at least a draw had they shown a little more
composure in attack and had a little more good
fortune.
Their defensive resolve was not in question,
however.
The Skolars had the better of the first half but
only had a Mike Bishay try to show for their
efforts as the All Golds prevented Ben Pointer
from touching down when over the tryline three
times.
When Smokie Junor went over in the corner
after some good handling created the chance, it
seemed inevitable that the Skolars would stroll
to victory.
However, the All Golds stuck to it and the Skolars
were forced into kicking penalties to extend their
lead to 16-0.
Ben Stead’s glorious pass to send Brad
Kislingbury cantering over under the posts with
ten minutes left sent hope through the All Golds
WEST TO FACE EAST
IN MUST-WIN HARRY
JEPSON TROPHY MATCH
WRITTEN BY MATT ANNISS
16
A place in the 2017 Harry Jepson Trophy
clash could be up for grabs when the West
of England travel to faced the East of
England at Pennine Way, Hemel Hempstead
last Saturday (kick-off 14:00).
Having lost to a strong London & The
South East side in Oxford last Saturday, the
West side had to win to be in with a chance
of making it to the final of the historic
amateur Rugby League competition, which
this year features regional sides for the
very first time.
www.allgoldsrugby.com
The West of England team performed
admirably in their first Harry Jepson Trophy
outing of the season last weekend, but was
ultimately outgunned 30-8 by a London &
South East side packed with experienced
Rugby League players.
Head Coach Ben Whincup, who steered
Swindon St George to their first West of
England League title this summer, said:
“We did a lot of things right last weekend
and for most of the game defended really
strongly. We tired towards the end as our
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby

and Bristol Sonics pair
Matt Blacker and Jonny
Mawer.
If the West of England pulls
off a win, they will have to
wait to hear the result of
the London & South East
v East of England clash
on September 16 to see
whether they’ve qualified
for the Harry Jepson
Trophy Final on September
24. A victory for the East
will see them take on
London & The South East
in the final, regardless of
the following week’s result.
completion rate in attack
was poor and we gave
them too much of the ball.
If we look after the ball well
and sharpen up in attack,
I’ve every confidence that
we can get a win against
the East on Saturday.”
The teams have met
once before in a friendly
encounter in the autumn
of 2016. On that day, the
West of England coaching
team, led by Director of
Rugby Glenn Tyreman,
used the opportunity to
try out a number of new
combinations and fringe
players. The East ended up
running out comfortable
winners, but Tyreman
thinks it will be a closer
game this time round.
He said: “The squad we
have put together for
Saturday’s game is very
strong – much stronger
than the team that played
the East last year. I don’t
think that result has much
bearing on what may
happen this weekend. We’ll
be stronger for last week’s
hit out and because this
is their first game of the
competition, they may be a
bit rusty. We’ll have to play
well to win but I believe
that we have the personnel
to do that.”
Tyreman, Whincup and
assistant coach Will
Brewer have shuffled
the starting line-up and
interchange bench for
Saturday’s must-win
encounter. Gloucestershire
Warriors’ Ashley Lewis
and Oxford Cavaliers’
Dan Spencer form a
new partnership in the
halves, with the Warriors’
Sean Roberts replacing
Bath’s Tom Plance at
hooker. Elsewhere, there
are first appearances
of the competition
for Portsmouth Navy
Seahawks’ Aaron Beesley
West of England squad
to face the East of
CREIGHTON AT THE
DOUBLE IN HARRY
JEPSON TROPHY OPENER
WRITTEN BY MATT ANNISS
WEST OF ENGLAND 08 – 30
LONDON & THE SOUTH EAST
18
Two tries in six second-half
minutes from man-of-thematch
Byron Creighton
helped London & The
South East overcome the
West of England in an
entertaining Harry Jepson
Trophy encounter at North
Hinksey Park, Oxford.
The Hammersmith Hill
Hoists hooker was in
the thick of the action
throughout, with his
quickfire double all but
wrapping the game up for
the visitors with just over
20 minutes remaining.
The opening game of
the new-look Harry
Jepson Trophy, which
now features regional
representative sides rather
than community clubs, was
a physical and hard-fought
from the first minute to the
last.
The West of England could
barely get out of their own
half in the first ten minutes
and were unlucky not to
go behind when Wests
Warriors full back Josh
Hutchison was adjudged to
www.allgoldsrugby.com
@AllGolds facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby

have knocked on over the
line. Three minutes later
the West had a try ruled
out for the same reason
in what was their first
meaningful attack of the
game.
In the end, it was the
home side that opened
the scoring. Bristol Sonics’
stand-off Dan Brooker
scored a superb solo try
following a barn-storming
50 metre run down the
left channel. Sadly, his
attempted conversion
drifted wide.
The visitors weren’t
behind for long, however.
On 22 minutes London
carved open the West
with a flowing move, only
to be halted by some
superb last-gasp defence.
On the next play, Sam
Broomhall trotted through
unopposed to the left of
the posts. Dan O’Brien
added the first of five
successful conversions.
On the half hour mark
London extended their
lead with the try of the
game, a thrilling 50-metre
team effort involving
brilliant support play. The
move was started by a
break from Hutchison – a
constant threat throughout
– and finished by winger
Brad Aird.
On the stroke of half time,
London’s Jamie Diggle
went to the sin-bin for
persistent foul play. While
the home side didn’t have
time to take advantage
of their extra man before
the break, they reduced
the arrears on 45 minutes
following a towering crossfield
kick by Brooker. The
London defence failed
to deal with it, allowing
Oxford Cavaliers’ winger
Ross Lewis an opportunity
to scoop up the bouncing
ball and touch down. Again,
Brooker’s attempted
conversion drifted wide.
The game remained in the
balance until Creighton
produced two pieces of
magic in less than five
minutes. The first followed
a penalty awarded
following the sin-binning of
West’s George Lenton-Hall,
while the second included
MATCH FACTS
some superb footwork
in the build up as well as
the hooker’s usual closerange
power. With scrumhalf
O’Brien converting
both tries, London were
effectively home and dry
at 24-8 with 20 minutes
remaining.
As the West tired in the
closing stages, it looked as
if the visitors would pile on
the points. In the end, the
home side did well to limit
them to one additional
score: a powerful closerange
score from Diggle
with nine minutes
remaining.
LAKELAND JOY
WORKINGTON TOWN 22 – 30 ALL GOLDS
Saturday 1 April – Derwent Park
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
20
THE GAME THAT STANDS OUT FOR ME IS THE LEAGUE
1 CUP WIN AT WORKINGTON. IT WAS APRIL FOOLS DAY
AND THE ALL GOLDS HAD THE LAST LAUGH, TURNING
THE TABLES ON THEIR HOSTS TO COME AWAY WITH A
MEMORABLE VICTORY.
Just six days after being beaten comfortably
by Workington in the league, the All Golds
travelled back to the glorious Lake District
to face Town again, this time in the League 1
Cup Quarter Final.
The weather was vastly different with
leaden skies bringing drizzle and heavier
showers replacing the bright sunshine
of the previous week. The All Golds side
was different too with Alex Gaskell and
Bead Kislingbury absent through injury
and Graham O’Keeffe making his first
appearance in the squad for almost a year.
The result, too, was different. The All Golds
played the perfect game on a boggy pitch
that had to be cleared of water before the
start as they defended hard
and kicked well to keep their
opponents out.
They also made fewer
mistakes than Town and
took advantage of the
chances that came their
way to lead 18-6 at the break
through Phil Cowburn, Harry
Kidd and Steve Parry.
Ten minutes into the second
half and a resurgent Town
had wiped out their deficit
with two converted tries
and were looking to take the
lead. Phil Lister’s try crucially
went unconverted as Carl
Forber missed for the first
time in 13 attempts over the
two games between the
sides.
This meant that Kieran
Hyde had to convert Chris
Barlow’s touchdown to
restore the All Golds’ lead.
The score going into the final
fifteen minutes was eerily
similar to that at the same
point six days previously but
the All Golds this time were
ahead.
The league game had seen
Town turn on the power and
the All Golds touched the
ball just twice as Town ran in
five converted tries in those
fifteen minutes.
This time, things were
different. The final 15
minutes were tense as Town
battered the line but the
All Golds kept them out,
went through their sets in
possession and kept Town
at long range with Hyde’s
boot turning Town around
and forcing them to move
the ball 80 or 90 metres to
get into a position to strike.
Finally, Town made one
mistake too many and Phil
Cowburn snapped up a
loose ball to race 60 metres
through the mud and
though he looked as if he
was treading water for the
final few metres he reached
the line to score and confirm
a semi final place for the
second year running.
Again, the game showed
what the All Golds were
capable of. They took
chances and defended
heroically. They executed a
strong game plan and kept
the intensity and belief to
the last minute.
Reflecting in the hotel that
night, there was a sense of
satisfaction, a sense that the
team had proved that they
were capable of overcoming
the Northern teams and the
only disappointing thing is
that such wins are all too
rare.
